Welcome to a special edition of BBC South East Today from the Sussex | :00:05. | :00:14.
County Cricket Ground. Can 1,000 people are here as they excitedly | :00:14. | :00:19.
await the arrival of the Olympic flame -- 10,000. It has troubled 94 | :00:19. | :00:24.
miles from Portsmouth to get there, passing through the hands of 131 | :00:24. | :00:31.
torch-bearer, each with their own unique story to tell. | :00:31. | :00:33.
Also in tonight's programme: Speeding charges against the | :00:34. | :00:37.
comedian Steve Coogan are dropped as he's found not guilty at a court | :00:37. | :00:39.
in Sussex. A woman is in hospital with serious | :00:39. | :00:42.
head injuries - police appeal for witnesses to a hit and run. | :00:42. | :00:45.
And parents' anger as a Kent school plans to close so that they can | :00:46. | :00:55.
:00:56. | :01:01. | ||
take their children to see the Welcome to a very special edition | :01:01. | :01:07.
of BBC South East Today. Why are we here? We are at the County Ground | :01:07. | :01:12.
in Hove with 10,000 people, who are at the moment enjoying Brighton's | :01:12. | :01:16.
and Rizzle Kicks, doing their own unique brand of entertainment. But | :01:16. | :01:20.
that is not why we are here, on the front of the stage is a large | :01:20. | :01:24.
golden goblet and later on this evening, the Olympic flame itself | :01:24. | :01:27.
will be arriving here to be kept burning through the night, whatever | :01:27. | :01:31.
the weather. It hasn't been a lovely afternoon but people all | :01:31. | :01:35.
along the route have been enjoying themselves. 8,000 miles from Greece | :01:35. | :01:40.
to London. Today, the section started off in Portsmouth and a | :01:40. | :01:47.
long the road, the flame will have travelled 94.7 miles, 131 people | :01:47. | :01:52.
have earned be titled torchbearer, as it passed through different | :01:52. | :01:55.
divinities and towns to make its way here. Some of the people | :01:55. | :01:58.
carrying the claim, you will have heard of. From Brighton, Sally | :01:58. | :02:05.
Gunnell, who won 400 metres gold in 1992. Robin Cousins, he won a gold | :02:05. | :02:10.
medal at Lake placid in 1980. An awful lot of other people have | :02:10. | :02:13.
carried it today and you will be hearing from them in a few moments | :02:13. | :02:18.
time. It is day 59 of the actual journey of the Olympic torch today. | :02:18. | :02:22.
The Games are less than a fortnight away. The convoy carrying the | :02:22. | :02:27.
Olympic flame reached Shoreham about an hour ago, and it has | :02:27. | :02:30.
travelled through West Blatchington, and from there carried on to Hove | :02:31. | :02:36.
Park and then it will be coming through central place mark and it | :02:36. | :02:40.
is -- central Hove and it is due to be here just before 7 o'clock and | :02:40. | :02:44.
we are hoping to see the flame lit live here at Sussex County Cricket | :02:44. | :02:53.
Club. But the point of the torch relay is not just about famous | :02:53. | :02:57.
people under Lindens, it is about ordinary people who have done | :02:57. | :03:01.
extraordinary things -- and Olympians. Chrissie Reidy has been | :03:01. | :03:06.
meeting some of them. Torch fever has officially arrived | :03:06. | :03:09.
in the south-east. Hundreds lined the streets to welcome the Olympic | :03:09. | :03:15.
flame as it was driven in convoy from sure home in West Sussex. | :03:15. | :03:18.
Kevin was one of the first to carry the torch. He has raised thousands | :03:18. | :03:27.
of pounds for charity, he had been running a marathon on his stag do. | :03:27. | :03:34.
Torchbearers ran alongside Olympic hurdler Sally Gunnell. Allen is the | :03:34. | :03:37.
south-east's Unsung Sporting Hero. Since the 1970s, he has given up | :03:37. | :03:41.
his evenings and weekends to help people play cricket. He admitted he | :03:42. | :03:46.
couldn't wait to get into his Olympic tracksuit. I had to try it | :03:46. | :03:49.
on straight away to make sure it fitted and slightly embarrassing, I | :03:49. | :03:54.
thought it might be quite amusing for my wife if I got the feather | :03:54. | :03:57.
duster out and all my slippers and pranced around the house in it, | :03:57. | :04:02.
which she managed to catch on film and put onto Facebook at the | :04:02. | :04:08.
amusement of all. They got my face. Amanda was nominated by her son. | :04:08. | :04:11.
She has spent her life trying to make a difference to the lives of | :04:11. | :04:14.
young people. She says her inspiration was the boxing legend | :04:15. | :04:19.
Muhammad Ali. I watched this young man and I thought, if you can do | :04:19. | :04:28.
something so amazing, then anybody can do it. Through my life, he is | :04:28. | :04:32.
one of my peers, but the fact that he was a fighter and he refused to | :04:32. | :04:36.
fight, the fact that he stood up for what he believed in, his | :04:36. | :04:41.
integrity, he has just been part of my faith the journey and he is an | :04:41. | :04:45.
inspiring person. The Olympic flame will be transferred to the cauldron | :04:45. | :04:48.
at Hove Cricket Ground, where it will spend the night before heading | :04:48. | :04:58.
:04:58. | :04:58. | ||
off from Brighton Pavilion early the rain is holding off, and we | :04:58. | :05:03.
will be having a full weather report later on to let us know what | :05:03. | :05:07.
we can expect for the rest of the torch relay, but Chrissie Reidy is | :05:07. | :05:11.
now in the middle of that marvellous melee where Rizzle Kicks | :05:11. | :05:15.
are performing and if she can hear us, let alone anyone else, we can | :05:15. | :05:20.
hear what some of the excitement and the crowd is like. Chrissie? | :05:20. | :05:25.
You can see Olympic fever has well and truly arrived in Brighton. | :05:25. | :05:30.
Check out this sea of faces or having a good time. And over here, | :05:30. | :05:34.
we have Rizzle Kicks, really getting the party going. Everyone | :05:34. | :05:39.
has got their dancing shoes on. What you make up the atmosphere on? | :05:39. | :05:46.
It is really good. What has been the best bit? Rizzle Kicks! | :05:46. | :05:53.
about you, why was it important for you to be here? The like Rizzle | :05:53. | :06:01.
Kicks? Yes! -- do like. Let me come to these two ladies, it is very | :06:01. | :06:08.
important for you to be here, why is that? Absolutely once-in-a- | :06:08. | :06:14.
lifetime, fantastic, really excited. What you make up the atmosphere? | :06:14. | :06:19.
Lots of people undeterred by the wind and rain? Absolut do, they are | :06:19. | :06:25.
all having a great time. -- absolutely. Let's come further down | :06:25. | :06:29.
the line. I have been waiting all of my life for the Olympics to be | :06:29. | :06:34.
in Britain. By you looking forward to the torch bearing? I have got | :06:34. | :06:40.
tickets. A what have you enjoyed about today? Rizzle Kicks. We have | :06:40. | :06:44.
all of these Rizzle Kicks fans, what is it about them? I just love | :06:44. | :06:50.
them. What do you like about them? Everything. By you looking forward | :06:50. | :06:56.
to the torch coming? Yes. The -- are you looking forward. I was a | :06:56. | :07:01.
throwback to you, Rob. It is a fantastic atmosphere, with | :07:01. | :07:05.
Rizzle Kicks going through their paces. I am sure the groundsman is | :07:05. | :07:09.
happy that the rain is holding up, 10,000 people walking on the | :07:10. | :07:13.
outfield. It is extraordinary feat of organisation to get this many | :07:13. | :07:18.
people here and all along the route. We will speak to somebody from | :07:18. | :07:28.
:07:28. | :07:29. | ||
LOCOG, this is all your fault? this is my fault, I am absolutely | :07:29. | :07:35.
willing to accepted! This is tremendous. -- accept it. We have | :07:35. | :07:38.
had the torch in the region for just over four days and we have had | :07:38. | :07:43.
one million people, out and see it, which is extraordinary. So I say, | :07:44. | :07:48.
East Sussex, Kent and Surrey, it is going to be amazing. Give us a | :07:48. | :07:53.
better the flavour of what we can expect over the next week. -- a bit | :07:53. | :07:57.
of a flavour. It is here in Brighton for tonight and then | :07:57. | :08:03.
tomorrow, it goes just down the road to Hastings, thank you very | :08:03. | :08:10.
much. Hastings will be very good, it will be fantastic. Then it goes | :08:10. | :08:17.
to Dover. We have all sorts of things happening, tall ships, | :08:17. | :08:21.
fireworks. We have got a special programme on Wednesday, we are | :08:22. | :08:26.
looking forward to that. In terms of organisation, how many people | :08:26. | :08:31.
have you used to get all of this together? Over the country, it is | :08:31. | :08:35.
hundreds of people organising this. It all happens right down to the | :08:35. | :08:38.
second, when that the torch-bearer comes down the street and people | :08:38. | :08:43.
turn and look at it and shout. we hope it will be here for the end | :08:43. | :08:49.
of the programme, just before 7 o'clock. It will be here. Then you | :08:49. | :08:54.
ever so much. We will be coming back here as the torch near the | :08:54. | :09:04.
:09:04. | :09:08. | ||
County Ground in Sussex. There over to poly. | :09:08. | :09:11.
The comedian Steve Coogan has been cleared of speeding today, after a | :09:11. | :09:13.
court hearing in Sussex. He told magistrates in Brighton that he | :09:13. | :09:16.
often loaned his Range Rover to family and friends and that someone | :09:16. | :09:20.
else was driving the vehicle when it broke the speed limit in Hove | :09:20. | :09:21.
last October. Juliette Parkin has the details. | :09:21. | :09:26.
Just to reassure you, the Queen is not dead. It is a humorous intro to | :09:26. | :09:32.
a song... He is perhaps best known for his alter ego, the socially | :09:32. | :09:36.
awkward Alan Partridge, whose catchphrases have made him | :09:36. | :09:39.
virtually a household name. But today it was that after winning | :09:39. | :09:45.
comedian in front of the cameras as himself, awaiting trial of the two | :09:45. | :09:50.
driving offences. In October last year, Steve Coogan's Range Rover | :09:50. | :09:55.
was caught speeding in Hove. He told the court he was not driving | :09:55. | :09:59.
the car at the time but magistrates heard it Turkey in the Rand five | :09:59. | :10:05.
months, rather than the required 28 days -- it to kick around five | :10:05. | :10:09.
months, rather than the required 28 days, to reveal his friend had been | :10:09. | :10:15.
driving. He said it was used as a poor car and the initial inquiries | :10:15. | :10:17.
between friends and family had drawn a blank. | :10:17. | :10:21.
When I asked him if it could have been dealt any quicker, he replied | :10:21. | :10:25.
that if he had taken a more forensic approach, he may have | :10:25. | :10:29.
established hit the driver was. It is possible he could have done but | :10:29. | :10:33.
he was looking in the wrong place. In November last year, he appeared | :10:33. | :10:36.
before the Leveson Inquiry to give evidence that the phone hacking | :10:36. | :10:40.
scandal. The court heard he was busy preparing for this at the time | :10:40. | :10:43.
of the offence as well as renovating his home. The | :10:43. | :10:47.
magistrates accepted that he did everything he could to find out who | :10:48. | :10:52.
was driving. A car enthusiast, the comedian is well love -- well known | :10:52. | :10:56.
for his love of the faster versions, but he proved to the court that he | :10:56. | :10:59.
was not driving that day. With both charges dropped, his relief was | :10:59. | :11:05.
clear. A Mr Coogan what is your reaction? | :11:05. | :11:08.
I am relieved, it is the right decision. Now the comedian and | :11:08. | :11:13.
actor can get on with doing what he loves best. | :11:13. | :11:16.
A woman who died after falling from a cliff near Beachy Head while | :11:16. | :11:19.
walking her dog with her husband has been named as 49-year-old | :11:19. | :11:23.
Laraine Goodwin, from Sundridge, near Sevenoaks. She fell 300 feet | :11:23. | :11:29.
onto the beach at Birling Gap on Saturday afternoon. A post mortem | :11:29. | :11:33.
examination will be held later this week. | :11:33. | :11:36.
The chairman of the Kent County Show says he's expecting losses of | :11:36. | :11:41.
over 300,000 because of problems caused by the wet weather. | :11:41. | :11:44.
Thousands of people travelling to the showground at Detling had to be | :11:44. | :11:47.
turned away, after heavy rain made parking areas unsafe. 50,000 people | :11:48. | :11:53.
attended this year's show, down from 67,000 last year. | :11:53. | :11:56.
Detectives are hunting a hit-and- run driver who sped off after | :11:56. | :12:00.
leaving a woman with life- threatening injuries. The 29-year- | :12:00. | :12:03.
old has serious head and leg injuries after the collision on | :12:03. | :12:08.
Brighton seafront yesterday. Our News Correspondent Paul Siegert | :12:08. | :12:14.
joins us live from Brighton. Sussex Police are appealing for | :12:14. | :12:19.
information, Paul? Yes, detectives say they need the | :12:19. | :12:24.
public to help on this one because they have so little to go on. The | :12:24. | :12:27.
condition of the 20 Nigel Forman from Hove is improving. The | :12:27. | :12:31.
hospital says her injuries are still serious but no longer night | :12:31. | :12:38.
threatening -- the condition of the 29-year-old woman is improving. She | :12:38. | :12:43.
was transferred to a specialist unit in Haywards Heath. As for the | :12:43. | :12:47.
accident itself, it happened at the junction of Kings Road and West | :12:47. | :12:52.
Street. The 29-year-old was out for the group of friends when she was | :12:53. | :12:56.
hit early in the morning. All detected know is that it was a dark | :12:56. | :13:04.
car, they don't now it it was a man or woman -- all detectives know. | :13:04. | :13:08.
He drowned attempting to save the life of a five-year-old girl in | :13:08. | :13:12.
difficulty in the sea of West Sussex. Now the family of a | :13:12. | :13:17.
Bulgarian and are working with the RNLI to make sure children are | :13:17. | :13:27.
:13:27. | :13:28. | ||
aware of the dangers of the seaside. For this lady, he was the perfect | :13:28. | :13:33.
son. Always thinking of others before himself. He died, she says, | :13:33. | :13:40.
just as he had lived. He was a very fine, a very loving, a very much a | :13:41. | :13:46.
gentle man. He had moved to Sutton from Bulgaria 10 years ago. He had | :13:46. | :13:50.
gone to West Wittering beach in West Sussex Fire dead with his | :13:50. | :13:54.
girlfriend when he heard cries for help. A five-year-old girl playing | :13:54. | :13:58.
on an inflatable ring was being swept out to sea. He reached her, | :13:58. | :14:03.
but was himself trapped under by strong currents. His family, moved | :14:03. | :14:08.
by the many messages of support by strangers, have set up a fund- | :14:08. | :14:13.
raising campaign with the RNLI. This man is a hero and a credit to | :14:13. | :14:17.
his family and both of our countries. The money raised will go | :14:17. | :14:22.
towards projects like this. Teaching inner-city children lest | :14:22. | :14:26.
familiar with the coast about the dangers -- less familiar, and what | :14:26. | :14:30.
to do if you find yourself in trouble in the water. The water can | :14:30. | :14:35.
be very dangerous and people must be very, very careful when they go | :14:35. | :14:44.
there to enjoy themselves. We can see how it can happen in seconds. | :14:44. | :14:48.
The man's bravery is also being recognised by the Bulgarian | :14:48. | :14:54.
government, due to award him the honorary St George, at the highest | :14:54. | :14:58.
civilian distinction. In my life, I have not heard of anyone doing this. | :14:58. | :15:04.
The reaction was really both of grief and pride. And his mother is | :15:04. | :15:07.
also proud of her son, but hopes the campaign will help prevent | :15:07. | :15:12.
future tragedies. I know that he did whatever he did with a very | :15:12. | :15:18.
good heart. She says he would simply have wanted, as always, to | :15:18. | :15:28.
:15:28. | :15:31. | ||
A retired Church of England priest from East Sussex has appeared in | :15:31. | :15:35.
court charged with 38 sexual offences against children. Canon | :15:35. | :15:39.
Gordon Rideout from Polegate is accused of carrying at the abuse in | :15:39. | :15:45.
the 1960s and 1970s. He will appear next at Lewes Crown Court on | :15:45. | :15:50.
October 19th. The Independent Alnwick District | :15:50. | :15:53.
Councillor Ian Treiber has launched his campaign to become Kent's | :15:53. | :15:57.
police commissioner by calling for the legalisation of drugs. He says | :15:57. | :16:00.
the war drugs has been a disaster and believes relaxing the law would | :16:00. | :16:05.
free up resources to crackdown on other crimes like vandalism, | :16:05. | :16:09.
domestic violence and sexual assault. | :16:09. | :16:12.
Plans for a 20 million renewable power station at Shoreham Harbour | :16:12. | :16:15.
had been handed to Adur District Council. It could be built in two | :16:15. | :16:19.
years' time if approved. The company behind the scheme says it | :16:19. | :16:23.
would convert vegetable oil and animal fat into enough electricity | :16:23. | :16:26.
for 18,000 homes. There has been an angry reaction | :16:26. | :16:30.
from some parents after a market primary-school abandoned its plans | :16:30. | :16:35.
to take pupils to see the Olympic torch because of safety concerns. - | :16:36. | :16:39.
- Margate. Drapers Mill Primary School will instead close before | :16:39. | :16:42.
lunchtime and is asking parents to take the children to the really | :16:42. | :16:46.
themselves. Terry is just one of hundreds of | :16:46. | :16:49.
parents who has been told the school can no longer risk taking | :16:49. | :16:53.
their children to them really. was quite last minute, the only | :16:53. | :16:58.
told us on Friday. -- it was. We spoke to the head teacher and said | :16:58. | :17:04.
it would close at two o'clock. But it is quite an inconvenience to | :17:04. | :17:10.
most parents at Work. It does not seem to be much point in children, | :17:10. | :17:17.
to school for two-and-a-half hours. Having six of them and taking them | :17:17. | :17:22.
all down, it is a bit of a problem. The school says it only found out | :17:22. | :17:27.
recently that the area it had been allocated to see the torch had also | :17:27. | :17:32.
been given to another school, meaning there would be a total of | :17:32. | :17:37.
800 pupils and staff from the two schools, safety, they felt, could | :17:37. | :17:42.
be compromised. I appreciate there was only a week's notice, but we | :17:42. | :17:46.
felt for the safety of the children it was paramount and we needed to | :17:46. | :17:51.
keep them safe. There will be members of staff on site if the | :17:51. | :17:56.
children cannot be collected through work pressure. Her the | :17:56. | :18:00.
final briefings for the security teams and marshals. In terms of | :18:00. | :18:03.
risk assessment, each school has to make their own choice. We are | :18:03. | :18:07.
disappointed that some of the children will not be there. Can you | :18:07. | :18:13.
guarantee safety? We are there to manage the crowd, not the safety of | :18:13. | :18:17.
individual children. That is the school's responsibility. We can | :18:17. | :18:21.
make sure the torch day itself is a safe as possible. The school says | :18:21. | :18:25.
it is not the only one to decide not to go or mass and asked parents | :18:25. | :18:32.
to take on responsibility. Safety, I would much prefer to take myself. | :18:32. | :18:36.
I understand their reasons, 800 children in one place is a bit much. | :18:36. | :18:40.
The Olympic torch is coming round Moorgate. Are you looking forward | :18:40. | :18:45.
to it? Yes, if I can. The council says it hopes everyone gets the | :18:45. | :18:52.
chance to celebrate. We are going to go back now to the | :18:52. | :18:57.
County Ground in Hove, where Rob Smith and around 10,000 people are | :18:57. | :19:01.
expecting the Olympic torch derive any minute. | :19:01. | :19:06.
We absolutely are, the excitement has kicked up a halt couple of | :19:06. | :19:11.
matches. In the corner of the ground, a few moments from a, we | :19:11. | :19:14.
expect to see a to right. Another reason why there has been more | :19:14. | :19:18.
excitement is that man other than a Olympian and ice dance specialist | :19:18. | :19:26.
Robin Cousins is here. -- none other. And you are a torch-bearer. | :19:26. | :19:30.
I am an Olympic torch bearer and a very programme. Which it did you | :19:30. | :19:35.
do? I came down the drive, and you are just part of a very long but | :19:35. | :19:39.
exciting journey the flame is taking. It is about to come into | :19:39. | :19:44.
Hove cricket ground. Sally Gunnell is on stage, she ran earlier. This | :19:44. | :19:49.
is something we never did when I was competing as an athlete. A | :19:49. | :19:53.
winter two Olympic Games as a competitive. One of them I got the | :19:53. | :19:56.
gold medal. This was part of the Olympic that was never part of a | :19:56. | :20:02.
lives as athletes. Were you aware of it at all? Very little. You are | :20:02. | :20:06.
so focused on building up to what you need to do on that date in your | :20:06. | :20:11.
chosen sport, to represent your country. The fact it is here on | :20:11. | :20:16.
home soil is amazing. I have done quite a few winter games, as a | :20:16. | :20:19.
competitor or a commentator. This is my first involvement in the | :20:19. | :20:24.
summer games and I could not be proud of. These explain the | :20:24. | :20:28.
presence of these two beautiful young ladies. This should have been | :20:28. | :20:31.
my opening night in Chicago in London. Of course, this had to take | :20:31. | :20:35.
precedence. The two ladies here will make sure I get back to London | :20:35. | :20:40.
as soon as we have finished talking. Fantastic. There is a big crowd | :20:40. | :20:44.
here, some 10,000 people. The weather has not been as kind as it | :20:44. | :20:48.
could have done. What was the atmosphere like on the road? | :20:48. | :20:52.
Amazing, people were screaming and cheering. I think the sun has shone | :20:52. | :20:56.
through the people supporting distort run over the past few weeks, | :20:56. | :21:00.
no matter what comes from up there. I was fortunate to run in dry | :21:00. | :21:04.
weather this afternoon. But it would never have dampened any one's | :21:04. | :21:08.
spirits. To show you are a proper Olympian, you have a special torch, | :21:08. | :21:12.
because this has not been decommissioned. I have literally | :21:12. | :21:16.
come straight from the relay run. It will be taken out of my hands, | :21:16. | :21:20.
the innards will be taken out. What a great way to light the barbecue | :21:20. | :21:25.
on a Sunday afternoon! But sadly, no, it will take pride of place at | :21:25. | :21:30.
the Garrick Theatre in London. Then it will take pride of place next to | :21:30. | :21:38.
my Olympic medal. Can I have ago? Yes, you can. It is not very heavy, | :21:38. | :21:43.
it is very easy to carry. 8,000 holes in this to represent the | :21:43. | :21:48.
8,000 people that are running. And it is a triangle, the third | :21:48. | :21:56.
Olympics the Great Britain. And the three Olympic creeds. I am just | :21:56. | :22:00.
hearing in my year, I think we should be seeing that the torch is | :22:01. | :22:05.
going to be coming into the ground and a few moments. It is being | :22:05. | :22:10.
carried on its last legs by lady called Karen West, from work in. | :22:10. | :22:18.
She is a cancer nurse at Goring Hall Hospital. -- from working. It | :22:18. | :22:22.
is starting to come into the ground. There are rows of people who are | :22:22. | :22:27.
lining up along the edge of the walkway. Local schoolchildren, or | :22:27. | :22:35.
in a variety of different teacher colours. Flame coloured T-shirts to | :22:35. | :22:43.
represent the Olympic flame. Now, why is Karen West the person who is | :22:43. | :22:48.
carrying the torch? I can tell you, she was actually nominated for her | :22:48. | :22:52.
work, for her outstanding work as a nursing sister at Goring Hall | :22:52. | :22:57.
Hospital. They described her as a patient's Guardian. She is helping | :22:57. | :23:02.
people get to the last days with cancer. Some of the Commons of the | :23:02. | :23:08.
people who actually nominated her for carrying the torch -- comments, | :23:08. | :23:11.
beset their journey would be far harder without that phone number | :23:11. | :23:15.
they can always ring, she is a true inspiration to all her patients. | :23:15. | :23:20.
They say she is more than a nurse and she is always on the end of the | :23:20. | :23:24.
phone, if they need a shoulder to cry on. She is coming into the | :23:24. | :23:29.
stadium. We can just see it as it comes through into the edge of the | :23:29. | :23:33.
ground. It is likely hidden behind the trees at the moment. You can | :23:33. | :23:40.
see everybody in the ground. They have been watching me and Robin. | :23:40. | :23:44.
have just spent a couple of hours on the torch relay past with these | :23:44. | :23:47.
wonderful volunteers, and these people who have been nominated. I | :23:47. | :23:51.
am here as an Olympian, these people who have been nominated it | :23:51. | :23:55.
changed people's lives and affected people in such a way that they are | :23:55. | :23:59.
one of the 1,000 that have been nominated to be here. It is an | :23:59. | :24:02.
incredible honour and I felt very honoured to be sitting next to some | :24:02. | :24:05.
of them. Their stories are so matter-of-fact to them, but they | :24:05. | :24:09.
have such passion for what they do, it is a great moment for them. | :24:10. | :24:18.
the handover of the torch itself, the... The Kiss. The torture is | :24:18. | :24:21.
meat and someone makes sure that you are turned off as the other one | :24:21. | :24:26.
is lit. They make sure the torches kissed. That is a thrilling moment. | :24:27. | :24:31.
It is like shaking someone's hand that you always wanted to make. | :24:31. | :24:37.
reality of the flame is that it was actually let using the power up the | :24:37. | :24:42.
sun, on Mount Olympus in Greece. It is the same flame. And it keeps | :24:42. | :24:46.
going, the flame in those days was meant as something that no matter | :24:46. | :24:49.
what was going on in the world, this was the flame of peace and it | :24:50. | :24:53.
brought everyone together. It is the one symbol of the games that | :24:53. | :24:57.
still exists, very much today. you were at the Winter Games, the | :24:57. | :25:02.
flame was there as well. When you are competing as an athlete, you | :25:02. | :25:07.
looked up for the first time at that, what did that mean to you? | :25:07. | :25:09.
stand there in your gear at the Stadium as the thing was brought in | :25:09. | :25:15.
at the cauldron was lit, you are in your country's colours, | :25:15. | :25:19.
representing your squad. Ways and her lawyers representing your | :25:19. | :25:23.
country. To be an Olympian as part of a giant squad representing your | :25:23. | :25:28.
country, there is something unique about being after you -- Olympic | :25:28. | :25:32.
event and representing in that way. It does not matter how many events | :25:32. | :25:37.
you do, the Olympic family is what you want to be a part of, with your | :25:37. | :25:43.
chosen sport. I can tell you that the flame tomorrow as it continues | :25:43. | :25:48.
on its route going around, it is going to be travelling from | :25:48. | :25:58.
Brighton to Hastings,. On Wednesday, travelling round from Hastings | :25:58. | :26:02.
through to Dover, Dover Castle is one of the places it will be | :26:02. | :26:05.
pitching up at. It will be travelling on a tall ship as well. | :26:06. | :26:13.
The flame is getting closer and closer to last. On Thursday, going | :26:13. | :26:19.
from deal to Leeds Castle. Tracey airmen will be opening their. At | :26:19. | :26:29.
:26:29. | :26:30. | ||
Maidstone to Guildford. The flame is now here in the stadium. If we | :26:30. | :26:34.
looked across to the other side of the cricket pitch, the plane is now | :26:34. | :26:41.
making its way along the outskirts. -- the flame. We can see it quite | :26:42. | :26:45.
brightly through the gloom of the evening. As it makes its way on the | :26:45. | :26:51.
final few yards to the stage to be lit. I will lead you to soak up the | :26:51. | :26:58.
atmosphere for a moment. The Olympic flame, brought by Karen | :26:58. | :27:04.
West, comes up onto the stage, delight the Crucible here. -- to | :27:04. | :27:14.
:27:14. | :27:39. | ||
Karen, if you would like to wave. If you would like to join us here. | :27:39. | :27:49.
:27:49. | :28:23. | ||
Well done, Karen. Join us in the centre of the stage. Please welcome | :28:23. | :28:29.
Chrissie Reidy. The Olympic flame has been lit here. At the Sussex | :28:29. | :28:32.
County Cricket Ground in Hove. It looks beautiful. It has been a | :28:32. | :28:37. |
