Good evening. UKIP is in with a good a chance of

winning the Thanet South seat at next year's General Election,

according to a major poll by a senior Conservative politician. The

current Tory MP Laura Sandys is standing down and UKIP's leader

Nigel Farage is believed to be considering standing for election

there. Today Lord Ashcroft published the results of a poll he

commissioned into voting intentions which suggested that the

Conservatives, Labour and UKIP are within four points of each other.

A woman from Kent who underwent "sun therapy" as a child is warning

others who received the treatment to be vigilant after she developed skin

cancer. Born prematurely and prone to infections, Joan East from

Bearsted near Maidstone was regularly exposed to UV lamps in the

1940s. A home in rural Kent and a love of

the great outdoors, but Joan East is extra careful these days about

exposing her skin to the sun. Last year she was diagnosed with skin

cancer. I had a strange spot appear on my forehead, when the top came

off, it started to bleed. This happened several times and it left a

little hollow crater each time. Pre`antibiotics, sun therapy was

very popular in the early 1900s, especially for young children to

treat a variety of conditions. They were placed in front of ultraviolet

lamps for increasing durations and the treatment could go on for

several years. We were given goggles to wear, which I remember were green

glass and bathed everything in this green light and we walked around

this centre island so that all sides of our body of the skin where

exposed. Although there is no proven link between sun therapy and cancer,

it is well established that ultraviolet light from sunbeds and

the sun can lead to the disease. They usually like whether that is

from the sun or the sunbeds can damage the structure of our skin

which can lead to skin cancer and that damage can build up over time.

After an operation, Joan East has been given the all clear. She is

warning others however to check for any changes to the skin after such

intense UV exposure as a child. Chagos Islanders who settled in West

Sussex have met in Crawley this afternoon to discuss a government

feasibility report set up to look at the issue of allowing them to return

home. They have been fighting a legal battle for years, after the UK

Government evicted them to make way for a military base in the 1960s.

The report is expected to be published next year. Today we are

return it as a gesture of goodwill. Thousands of motor sport fans have

been at Kent racing circuit Lydden Hill today for the first ever round

of the World Rallycross Championship to be staged in the UK. The sport

began at Lydden back in the 1960s, but is enjoying a surge of

popularity and is now attracting some of the world's top drivers. I

have been coming here from the age of ten. It is a magnificent day out.

We have been coming to rallycross for years and it is getting better I

gain. The races are short and it is good racing. Time for the weather.

After a wet day to day, we have a better one tomorrow. We are not out

of the woods yet, however, some more rain to come this evening. Tomorrow

morning it will be much drier but temperatures around nine or 10

Celsius. Some clouds to begin with but a lot more sunshine. Just the

odd shower here and there. For many of us it will be a dry day. Top

temperatures of 16 Celsius. Some lucky areas may get up to 18

degrees. For Monday, a bit of the next bag. Some sunny intervals and

bands of showers, if you get caught underneath one you will know about!
