The first time I'm doing is putting far this year.

:00:00.:00:15.

The first time I'm doing is putting on now polish.

:00:16.:00:18.

A "disaster" and "car crash television" `

:00:19.:00:20.

harsh criticism for Kent's Police and Crime Commissioner after her

:00:21.:00:23.

It is police... Sorry. It was an ale advised adventure.

:00:24.:00:38.

The young Kent tennis player given High Court permission to sue

:00:39.:00:41.

the Lawn Tennis Association on the grounds of racial discrimination.

:00:42.:00:44.

Demonstrators gather at Manston to protest against any

:00:45.:00:47.

We'll be hearing from those taking part.

:00:48.:00:53.

Labour's leading lady ` the Sussex campaign to remember the

:00:54.:00:55.

And it's the gory details that have made them horribly successful.

:00:56.:01:04.

We meet the history team loved by children ` and parents.

:01:05.:01:19.

A fly`on`the`wall TV documentary about the Kent Police and

:01:20.:01:24.

Crime Commissioner Ann Barnes has been described as "a disaster"

:01:25.:01:27.

by the organisation that represents the county's police officers.

:01:28.:01:32.

Kent Police Federation says last night's programme has damaged

:01:33.:01:35.

the force's reputation and made it a laughing stock.

:01:36.:01:38.

Mrs Barnes, who earns ?85,000 a year, says she was frustrated by the

:01:39.:01:42.

Meet The Commissioner was certainly an entertaining look at the work

:01:43.:01:50.

If I could wave a magic wand and say, "I can provide this in policing

:01:51.:01:57.

But the body representing police officers

:01:58.:02:00.

in Kent says the fly`on`the`wall documentary was a disaster.

:02:01.:02:04.

There is a feeling that this has damaged the

:02:05.:02:07.

reputation of the force, and that it was an ill`advised adventure.

:02:08.:02:10.

As I said, a train crash of a program.

:02:11.:02:12.

They feel by association their reputation has been damaged.

:02:13.:02:18.

The program showed the Kent Police and Crime Commissioner fighting to

:02:19.:02:21.

save jobs from cuts, challenging the outgoing chief constable

:02:22.:02:25.

on crime figures, and listening to the concerns of residents.

:02:26.:02:29.

But the more memorable footage was less than flattering.

:02:30.:02:34.

Of course there was the now infamous onion chart

:02:35.:02:39.

of police priorities that even Mrs Barnes couldn't easily explain.

:02:40.:02:42.

What would be an example of crime on the outside rim?

:02:43.:02:45.

I wasn't thinking I was going to talk about the onion, as we call it.

:02:46.:02:52.

And there was an excruciating speech at a chief

:02:53.:02:55.

It is very difficult for the newly retired.

:02:56.:02:59.

A former adviser says Ms Barnes is unhappy with

:03:00.:03:07.

I was disappointed in the way she was conveyed.

:03:08.:03:13.

Ann Barnes is a very good police and crime commissioner, and the work she

:03:14.:03:17.

Unfortunately, that didn't come across last night, and I think there

:03:18.:03:21.

It was mischievousness, in my opinion, by Channel 4.

:03:22.:03:29.

One known critic of Mrs Barnes says he hopes

:03:30.:03:31.

the work of other police and crime commissioners in the country is not

:03:32.:03:35.

marred by what he describes as her "error of judgement".

:03:36.:03:38.

For the first time, what are the public going to say?

:03:39.:03:41.

Ann Barnes was doing a similar role when she was chairman

:03:42.:03:44.

The public couldn't do anything about it.

:03:45.:03:47.

Now they've seen what she is doing as the Police and

:03:48.:03:50.

Crime Commissioner, she's elected, and if they don't like it,

:03:51.:03:53.

Ann Barnes issued a statement today on her website

:03:54.:03:57.

saying the only reason she agreed to do the documentary was to help

:03:58.:04:00.

people to better understand the job of a Police and Crime Commissioner.

:04:01.:04:04.

She says, "I'm disappointed there is too much emphasis on me

:04:05.:04:07.

as an individual, and not enough on the work of the office".

:04:08.:04:10.

She adds, "It was never my intention to draw adverse publicity to

:04:11.:04:13.

the excellent work being carried out by officers and staff in often very

:04:14.:04:17.

At lunchtime today, a banner paid for by critics was flown over police

:04:18.:04:23.

headquarters carrying a blunt message for the commissioner.

:04:24.:04:27.

Her supporters, though, believe she will come back fighting.

:04:28.:04:34.

This isn't the first controversy Ann Barnes has faced

:04:35.:04:36.

since she was appointed as the county's first police and

:04:37.:04:39.

In April last year, her newly`appointed Kent youth

:04:40.:04:43.

commissioner, 17`year`old Paris Brown,

:04:44.:04:46.

had to resign after she was found to have posted inappropriate tweets.

:04:47.:04:50.

In June, a damning report found that Kent Police was failing to record

:04:51.:04:53.

Then in August, Mrs Barnes was criticised

:04:54.:04:58.

for considering abandoning her own target of reducing crime in Kent

:04:59.:05:02.

We ask to speak to Ann Barnes, but she declined to comment.

:05:03.:05:22.

If you watched the programme, we'd like to know what you think.

:05:23.:05:25.

Has Ann Barnes made Kent Police a "laughing stock"?

:05:26.:05:29.

Malcolm Dyer says she is pioneering part of a national programme,

:05:30.:05:35.

without anything like the true resources such a daunting challenge

:05:36.:05:38.

He seems to be very much in the minority.

:05:39.:05:44.

More typical is Bryan Welbourn, who says she is "a laughing stock,

:05:45.:05:47.

She should resign now and divert her office costs to real

:05:48.:05:51.

Hundreds of protestors have gathered at the site of Manston Airport to

:05:52.:06:01.

demonstrate against any possibility of building houses there.

:06:02.:06:03.

The Kent airbase was shut two weeks ago by owner Ann Gloag, who claims

:06:04.:06:07.

Three formal offers were made to buy it, but the owner said

:06:08.:06:11.

Well, our business correspondent, Mark Norman, is there.

:06:12.:06:24.

Around 300 people were here this evening at six o'clock. They have

:06:25.:06:32.

been playing the Manston song, protesters determined to keep the

:06:33.:06:37.

fight going to resurrect the airport and stop houses being built. I have

:06:38.:06:43.

one of the campaign is with me. Surely the fight is over. By a

:06:44.:06:50.

usually? We are still fighting. We are protesting and are in

:06:51.:06:56.

agreement. We are stepping up the fight. We're making sure people know

:06:57.:07:02.

that we're still here. Has there any `` been any communication with the

:07:03.:07:11.

owner? No, absolutely nothing. We are here protesting and making sure

:07:12.:07:14.

that people know we are here making noise. The longer this goes on, the

:07:15.:07:22.

less chance there is, surely? We are positive. That is why we are here

:07:23.:07:28.

and fighting for it. There is a good chance it could still reopen. Thank

:07:29.:07:34.

you. Clearly everyone here believes the same thing. It will be difficult

:07:35.:07:37.

if they are not communicating with the owners. To say there is a two

:07:38.:07:42.

minute to spirit would be an understatement. There is a strong

:07:43.:07:45.

feeling that they would like to keep this airport open. Thank you.

:07:46.:07:49.

They're famously long`legged AND lesser spotted `

:07:50.:07:51.

A young mixed`race tennis player from Kent has been given the right

:07:52.:08:01.

to sue the sport's governing body, claiming his career is being damaged

:08:02.:08:05.

18`year`old Isaac Stoute says white players with lower rankings are

:08:06.:08:11.

being favoured over him by the Lawn Tennis Association.

:08:12.:08:15.

He says as a result, he's missed out on funding, training opportunities,

:08:16.:08:18.

After a long legal battle, the High Court has said

:08:19.:08:23.

the LTA does have a case to answer, as Piers Hopkirk reports.

:08:24.:08:34.

I sat on the practice court with his father. The 18`year`old is serving

:08:35.:08:42.

legal papers. The tennis hopeful is suing the Lawn Tennis Association

:08:43.:08:46.

for discrimination. After three Appeal Court judges ruled his case

:08:47.:08:49.

should go forward to a full trial. For me, it is about the other kids

:08:50.:08:55.

who also get racially discriminated against, and don't stand up and say

:08:56.:09:00.

anything. I know with many players who have had similar issues and

:09:01.:09:04.

nothing happens with them the past. I thought it was my place to do

:09:05.:09:09.

something. As it is the top`rated underrating player in Kent, but he

:09:10.:09:14.

and his family are claiming that the governing body has stifled his

:09:15.:09:17.

career and promoting other ranked white players ahead of him. If you

:09:18.:09:22.

have the talent, you should get through the sport a matter what. You

:09:23.:09:26.

shouldn't be hindered by the organisation or a lack of funding

:09:27.:09:31.

and bigoted views. It should be down to simply talent. They should not

:09:32.:09:39.

find you until you achieve something. If you are a white

:09:40.:09:42.

person, they will find you until you achieve something. The Association

:09:43.:09:46.

says: Both Heather Watson and another

:09:47.:10:03.

mixed race player who has achieved success in tennis players ``

tennis, but as I could do leaves the should be more. Is that of the

:10:11.:10:13.

success has centred here on the tennis courts. Now his focus must

:10:14.:10:16.

switch to the law courts. Kent's Lydd Airport starts operating

:11:22.:11:26.

migrants so far this year have died in similar circumstances. As you

Kent Police Federation says last night's programme has damaged

fine and dry. Also for some surprising facts about the spring.

:12:30.:12:35.

She's been described as one of the most important figures

:12:36.:12:38.

in women's political history, but some 90 years on from being one

:12:39.:12:41.

of the first women to be elected to parliament, few people these days

:12:42.:12:45.

She was one of five women to be elected in 1923.

:12:46.:12:49.

It was the first general election that allowed women to vote,

:12:50.:12:52.

Six years later, she became Britain's first female

:12:53.:12:57.

Now there is a growing campaign in Brighton and Hove to have

:12:58.:13:03.

a commemorative blue plaque erected at Margaret Bondfield's former home

:13:04.:13:05.

Ellie Price has tonight's special report.

:13:06.:13:15.

She was applying any air in a man's world. One of Britain's first female

:13:16.:13:24.

MPs in 1923, she made history against six years later becoming the

:13:25.:13:28.

first woman cabinet minister. But her political life had modest

:13:29.:13:32.

beginnings. At age 14, she became an apprentice here on church road in

:13:33.:13:37.

Hove. It was her she would formulate the ideas that became so important

:13:38.:13:41.

in her career, and the ideas that became so important in the women's

:13:42.:13:46.

rights movement. It is an unassuming building that everybody goes into

:13:47.:13:49.

daily. It is part of their routine. People have no idea until we

:13:50.:13:54.

uncovered this fact is that this building is actually really

:13:55.:13:56.

historically significant, because here, a 14`year`old girl came and

:13:57.:14:01.

was politicised, and she ended up becoming the first woman cabinet

:14:02.:14:04.

minister for the UK. I hope people go in there and buy a pint of milk

:14:05.:14:08.

or bread and the paper and look around and think, this happened

:14:09.:14:13.

here. When Margaret Bondfield was born in 1873, women had no electoral

:14:14.:14:16.

rights whatsoever. After spending seven years in Hove, she moved to

:14:17.:14:22.

London at a time that saw the suffragette movement strengthened

:14:23.:14:25.

until at last in 1918, the women over the age of 30 were given the

:14:26.:14:29.

vote. Margaret Bondfield was first elected as an MP five years before

:14:30.:14:33.

women got the vote on the same terms as men. I think it undoubtably was a

:14:34.:14:38.

difficult time and took some quite strong character, but Margaret

:14:39.:14:44.

Bondfield certainly had developed that from her early youth. From 14,

:14:45.:14:49.

she was training to be a shop assistant here in Brighton. But she

:14:50.:14:54.

became involved with unionism. She had a lot of experience under her

:14:55.:14:57.

belt by the time she was elected to Parliament. I am very glad in the

:14:58.:15:03.

women `` in the name of the women of England how proud we are... As a

:15:04.:15:07.

cabinet minister, she used a role to promote women's achievements, but it

:15:08.:15:11.

is the achievements from humble beginnings but campaigners say are

:15:12.:15:13.

worth remembering. Horrible Histories is the BBC

:15:14.:15:22.

children's programme that's as popular with parents

:15:23.:15:25.

as their children. We've already enjoyed the books

:15:26.:15:27.

and the subsequent TV series, but there's also

:15:28.:15:30.

a touring theatre production. The first Horrible Histories book,

:15:31.:15:33.

The Terrible Tudors, was written by There are now 60 Horrible Histories

:15:44.:15:52.

on the books were created for CBBC. Peter Whittlesea is at the

:15:53.:15:58.

Assembly Halls in Tunbridge Wells where Horrible Histories will be

:15:59.:16:01.

opening in a few minutes' time. This show is a whirlwind through

:16:02.:16:16.

many years of history in 107 minutes with a short break to catch your

:16:17.:16:20.

breath and buy an ice cream. Judging by the audience participation in all

:16:21.:16:22.

of those songs, you don't have to have a beard and tweed jacket to

:16:23.:16:34.

enjoy this history lesson. It is a hit TV series famed for bringing

:16:35.:16:37.

history to life. Loved by children and parents because the horrible

:16:38.:16:49.

bits are highlighted. It has moved from the small screen to a stage

:16:50.:16:53.

show as an action packed romp through the annals of British

:16:54.:16:59.

history. We play each of the 20 characters, which is pretty mental.

:17:00.:17:04.

Backstage, it is quite crazy. It is like a choreography itself.

:17:05.:17:09.

Everybody is grabbing hat is, and everything is made out of Velcro

:17:49.:17:54.

has somebody why to bottom. Is that truth it? Yes. That is a bit harsh.

:17:55.:18:04.

Whether it is a battle of action or the vile Victorians, it is the true

:18:19.:18:24.

disappoint. Song Mac you can take that flight back home for free. The

:18:25.:18:30.

show continues until Sunday. The cast play more than 80 characters in

:18:31.:18:34.

total, and they rehearse for four weeks to ensure they are

:18:35.:18:39.

WordPerfect. They also need to get those facts and dates totally

:18:40.:18:43.

correct. Thank you very much. I think we said the right man for the

:18:44.:18:45.

job. The Hockey World Cup starts this

:18:46.:18:49.

weekend in The Hague, and the South East is providing most of the

:18:50.:18:52.

England women's and men's teams. There are 14 players from Kent and

this has to be right up there. I would put it second to

the Olympics, and as a hockey event in itself,

:19:21.:19:22.

it is probably the biggest one. The Red Arrows,

of spring. I have some surprising facts for you. This spring has been

one of the warmest on record, only beaten by 2007 and 2011. It wasn't

all good news. It was not only warm, but wet for a good deal of the time.

We have been plagued by cloud to date, although it has been easing

have the weekend. We would escape back to our top story, and a lot of

you have been contacting us regarding Ann Barnes's appearance on

a documentary last night. She came in for a storm of criticism and

:25:54.:25:57.

calls for her resignation after the programme, which was branded a

:25:58.:26:01.

disaster by the Police Federation. Not all of you are great, though.

:26:02.:26:05.

Norman said she came across as someone very normal and probably

:26:06.:26:09.

very good at engaging with the public. Peter contacted us on

:26:10.:26:13.

Facebook and said either too was unprofessional, but had out

:26:14.:26:16.

interests at heart. However, they are in the minority. One woman said

:26:17.:26:29.

Ann Barnes can't be elected. She needs to resign. Having seen the

:26:30.:26:36.

programme, I'm horrified about her attitude, ineptitude and a total

:26:37.:26:39.

waste of money to keep her in what seems to be a pointless post. Maggie

does say that the clips of the Police Commissioner it is putting,

her. She goes on to say that perhaps it is a politically motivated

hatchet job. Thank you very to for your comments. You can read more of

them on our Facebook page. Join in that debate. That is it from us.

Have a good weekend.
