use got to find those plans, Sherlock. I'd like to see you try. | :00:00. | :00:00.
Sherlock writer Mark Gatiss comes to Sussex starring in the acclaimed | :00:00. | :00:00.
There are calls tonight for the Government to step tp border | :00:00. | :00:19.
security in the South East after footage emerged of suspected | :00:20. | :00:22.
illegal migrants getting out of the back of a lorry | :00:23. | :00:24.
Maria Caulfield, the MP for Lewes and Newhaven, wants to see | :00:25. | :00:33.
The member of the public who filmed the footage on his mobile | :00:34. | :00:37.
phone says he was in complete and utter shock as he | :00:38. | :00:39.
And in a separate incident yesterday, four suspected | :00:40. | :00:43.
migrants were found in Bridge near Canterbury. | :00:44. | :00:44.
Climbing out of a truck onto a busy motorway, | :00:45. | :00:48.
show four or five people, believed to be suspected migrants, | :00:49. | :00:51.
getting out of it the back door of this lorry | :00:52. | :00:53.
The man who filmed it taught me what he saw. | :00:54. | :01:03.
The driver of the lorry in front of us come out of his cab, | :01:04. | :01:09.
went to the rear, undone security locks on the rear of his | :01:10. | :01:12.
vehicle and started ushering out some people. | :01:13. | :01:14.
I mean, you certainly hear `bout it on the news and you see | :01:15. | :01:18.
it in the newspapers, but it came as a surprise | :01:19. | :01:20.
Incidents like these are becoming a familiar tald. | :01:21. | :01:25.
Last year, in Rochester, a viewer filmed these | :01:26. | :01:27.
extraordinary pictures of what appears to be a group of illegal | :01:28. | :01:30.
immigrants being smuggled into Kent inside cars on the back of ` | :01:31. | :01:33.
Earlier this month, 24 people were found in the | :01:34. | :01:36.
Only last week, I reported on the story of a suspected migrant | :01:37. | :01:47.
who was found dead in a lorry near Folkestone. | :01:48. | :01:52.
Now one south-east MP said she is calling on the Government | :01:53. | :01:55.
I'm very shocked to see those pictures and it | :01:56. | :02:00.
corroborates with what some of my residents have been tdlling me | :02:01. | :02:02.
I have the Port of New Haven in my constituency and I have had | :02:03. | :02:12.
reports of residents saying they are seeing people | :02:13. | :02:14.
I'm taking it very seriously because we've | :02:15. | :02:17.
got immigration rules in this country that | :02:18. | :02:18.
need to be followed for | :02:19. | :02:19.
everyone's sake, not just rdsidents of the country, but also thd | :02:20. | :02:22.
migrants because they are often at the hands of people trafficking | :02:23. | :02:25.
It's not known if this latest incident has anything to | :02:26. | :02:28.
do with the ongoing dismantling of the migrant camp in Calahs, | :02:29. | :02:31.
police believe there are still around 100 | :02:32. | :02:34.
Their plight was raised in the Commons today | :02:35. | :02:38.
Meanwhile, the company which operates the lorry said its driver | :02:39. | :02:45.
passed all controls and scanners, and believes the people may have got | :02:46. | :02:47.
Kent Police said no trace of the suspected migrants w`s found. | :02:48. | :02:51.
The Home Office said it has launched an investigation. | :02:52. | :02:57.
Brighton's i360, the world's first vertical cable car, | :02:58. | :03:00.
has been officially opened by His Royal Highness | :03:01. | :03:03.
The attraction has experienced a number of technical probldms | :03:04. | :03:10.
since it started taking payhng customers in August. | :03:11. | :03:13.
But to the relief of organisers, today's event | :03:14. | :03:15.
Our reporter, John Young, was there and joins us now, | :03:16. | :03:31.
John, this Royal seal of approval was important | :03:32. | :03:33.
Delighted. I think they couldn't have had a better guess as well | :03:34. | :03:42.
such a senior member of the Royal family. And one who has a rdal | :03:43. | :03:47.
interest in architecture hilself. Today, there was plenty to catch his | :03:48. | :03:51.
eye architecturally. My report contains some flash or geography. | :03:52. | :03:55.
The sun came out and so did the crowds. The 95-year-old Dukd may | :03:56. | :04:01.
himself had been behind schddule but no one seemed to mind. Abovd all, | :04:02. | :04:05.
his journey, his flight went smoothly. They relate to yotr | :04:06. | :04:08.
organisers, all too aware that three times in five days last month, | :04:09. | :04:12.
people became trapped in reports when oversensitive safety sdnsors | :04:13. | :04:22.
what then in the doors. Thankfully, today went smoothly. It went fine. | :04:23. | :04:27.
Some minor issues with old very quickly in the early days btt it | :04:28. | :04:32.
will be fine today. How unddrmining were those issues? I don't think | :04:33. | :04:36.
they really affected sales very much at all in the end, we did 100,0 0 | :04:37. | :04:41.
visitors in the first 25 daxs. We are up at around 190,000 so far We | :04:42. | :04:47.
are on target. It has taken a long time to reach this point. B`ck in | :04:48. | :04:51.
the early 1960s, these thred Brighton residents came up with | :04:52. | :04:55.
something very similar. Now, after much heated debate and several | :04:56. | :05:01.
decades later, work got unddrway. Those surprise that the man sent to | :05:02. | :05:05.
represent decals added a's light and reception was the head of economic | :05:06. | :05:09.
development. We are confident. It is something that there were | :05:10. | :05:15.
conflicting discussions as to whether we should enter into this or | :05:16. | :05:20.
not, but now it's here and we've got to push it and make sure it works. | :05:21. | :05:23.
We got to make sure there is investment that works for the city | :05:24. | :05:28.
and for the region, and everybody. Hopefully, it'll be here for a long | :05:29. | :05:33.
time yet. For the crowd who turned out today to see the cute, the | :05:34. | :05:41.
economic reason was hardly ` priority, they just wanted to see | :05:42. | :05:45.
royalty. -- Duke. It's just because it is the Duke. I was just | :05:46. | :05:53.
interested to see. I just w`nted to see Prince Philip. And posshbly hear | :05:54. | :05:56.
one of the inappropriate thhngs he said sometimes. And he had some less | :05:57. | :06:08.
than controversial things to say today, just the way everybody wanted | :06:09. | :06:20.
it. If you soon the journey from London, the 90 minute on his feet on | :06:21. | :06:25.
the journey back up were not enough for a 95-year-old man, we wdre also | :06:26. | :06:30.
told the Duke was on his wax to Portsmouth for another event later. | :06:31. | :06:35.
Still very much doing what he sees as his job and the people of | :06:36. | :06:38.
Brighton and Hove Hill are delighted that he was. Thank you. | :06:39. | :06:45.
In a moment, the Kent MP who suffered burns in a bonfire and | :06:46. | :06:50.
thanks the paramedics to second An independent review into patient | :06:51. | :06:56.
safety at the scandal hit South East Coast Ambulance Service | :06:57. | :06:58.
has found there was no eviddnce of patient harm as a result | :06:59. | :07:01.
of a response-time pilot. The service came under | :07:02. | :07:03.
fire for introducing the controversial plan - | :07:04. | :07:12.
now abandoned - to take up to ten extra minutes to reassess what type | :07:13. | :07:15.
of advice or treatment some patients needed, and whether an ambulance | :07:16. | :07:18.
was really necessary. The report found some peopld | :07:19. | :07:20.
waited eight minutes longer after phoning 111 - | :07:21. | :07:22.
rather than 999 - for an ambulance for the sale level | :07:23. | :07:24.
of high priority call. The scheme was introduced | :07:25. | :07:27.
without proper governance and decision making | :07:28. | :07:28.
within the Trust. pockets of good frontline practice, | :07:29. | :07:30.
in three quarters of cases, the project didn't comply | :07:31. | :07:35.
with nationally agreed oper`ting We are very pleased patients were | :07:36. | :07:52.
not put into risk, but therd are different questions. Many things | :07:53. | :07:55.
need to be looked at and ex`mined because the utility and aren't any | :07:56. | :07:58.
such sort of these processes is really important and it helps to | :07:59. | :08:02.
look after the patient but importantly to make sure evdryone is | :08:03. | :08:11.
protected. This report was commissioned after the annu`l | :08:12. | :08:17.
service was put under speci`l meant, measures in September. It w`s rated | :08:18. | :08:21.
inadequate in its damning inspection which showed a shortage of staff and | :08:22. | :08:25.
claimed there was a culture of harassment and bullying. After | :08:26. | :08:30.
which, there was called for the resignation of the whole bo`rd. | :08:31. | :08:36.
Our reporter Briohny Willials is outside SECAMB's | :08:37. | :08:38.
Briohny, what is the Trust saying about this latest report | :08:39. | :08:41.
The acting Chief Executive of the trust | :08:42. | :08:58.
Geraint Davies says although it does identify problems, it says no | :08:59. | :09:00.
evidence was found that any patient has come to harm, | :09:01. | :09:03.
Having said that, the Trust wrote to MPs all of the 44 constituencies | :09:04. | :09:07.
it serves across Kent, Surrey and Sussex asking thdm | :09:08. | :09:09.
to draw to its attention anx concerns raised by constitudnts - | :09:10. | :09:13.
and none of the MPs came forward with any examples. | :09:14. | :09:17.
Of course, there have been ` string of problems hair and this is just a | :09:18. | :09:23.
very small piece of a very big picture. | :09:24. | :09:27.
The CQC is constantly monitoring South East Ambulance Servicd | :09:28. | :09:29.

A senior Labour activist in Brighton and Hove is to be | :10:20. | :10:24.
investigated by the party over claims of intimidation. | :10:25. | :10:28.
Greg Hadfield, who briefly held the post of Secretary | :10:29. | :10:30.
of the Brighton and Hove br`nch earlier this year, has | :10:31. | :10:33.
been suspended while a report is prepared. | :10:34. | :10:34.
Mr Hadfield claims he is thd victim of a 'witchhunt' against supporters | :10:35. | :10:37.
Our political editor Helen Catt is here. | :10:38. | :10:49.
Helen, this is the latest twist in a long-running internal feud | :10:50. | :10:57.
Absolutely. It all kicked off in July following a controvershal | :10:58. | :11:03.
meeting where Greg Hadfield and other socialist candidates were | :11:04. | :11:06.
elected to the committee whhch runs the Brighton and Hove distrhct | :11:07. | :11:09.
Labour Party. There was a complaint about that meeting and the dlection | :11:10. | :11:12.
was overturned. Since then, relations in the city have | :11:13. | :11:17.
deteriorated. On social medha, on two major television documentaries | :11:18. | :11:21.
last month. Now, Greg Hadfidld has been told he has been suspended and | :11:22. | :11:25.
he has been accused of a pattern of behaviour which includes | :11:26. | :11:28.
intimidation of individuals. He denies this. The Labour Party is not | :11:29. | :11:33.
coming thing on his suspenshon but I understand the allegations lade | :11:34. | :11:36.
relate to things that were connected to that controversial meeting. Thank | :11:37. | :11:37.
you. When MP Gordon Henderson was badly | :11:38. | :11:42.
burnt lighting a bonfire, his wife doused him with water | :11:43. | :11:47.
from a hose for ten minutes while waiting | :11:48. | :11:49.
for the emergency services. His injuries were so severe, | :11:50. | :11:55.
the air ambulance was called out to rush him from to the tratma | :11:56. | :11:58.
unit in Pembury Hospital. Today, Mr Henderson | :11:59. | :12:03.
thanked the ambulance crew So, this is where I was acttally | :12:04. | :12:06.
lying, but I was actually shtting Last time, he was | :12:07. | :12:13.
inside looking out. This is the first time | :12:14. | :12:17.
since Gordon Henderson's accident that he has | :12:18. | :12:19.
met the paramedics he If it hadn't been for that `ir | :12:20. | :12:21.
ambulance, I might not That's not being overdramathc, | :12:22. | :12:26.
that's the truth. We did recognise each other, which | :12:27. | :12:28.
was nice. It is a real pleasure to be | :12:29. | :12:39.
able to meet patients. Gordon was left with severe burns | :12:40. | :12:42.
on his face, back from petrol he had used | :12:43. | :12:44.
to light a bonfire exploded. The air ambulance got him | :12:45. | :12:51.
from the Isle of Sheppey to a trauma unit in Tunbridge Wells | :12:52. | :12:54.
in just 15 minutes. initial injury, they develop | :12:55. | :12:56.
and they can progress and gdt worse. Airway injuries that you suffer | :12:57. | :13:00.
from breathing in hot gases or flames can develop | :13:01. | :13:03.
through a period of time. The sooner we can get these | :13:04. | :13:05.
patients to specialists, they would have to their injuries, | :13:06. | :13:07.
the better their recovery and The speed at which they | :13:08. | :13:10.
got me from Sheppey to Pembury Hospital would have taken | :13:11. | :13:16.
a couple of hours on the ro`ds. It did highlight to me how | :13:17. | :13:21.
important our Kent air ambulance is. It costs around ?7 million per year | :13:22. | :13:29.
to keep the helicopter in the air. Most of that comes from | :13:30. | :13:32.
voluntary donations. As an MP, Gordon has previotsly | :13:33. | :13:35.
lobbied the Chancellor to Today, he made a personal | :13:36. | :13:39.
donation, too, after his accident showed hhm just | :13:40. | :13:52.
how vital the air ambulance can be. It's quarter to seven, | :13:53. | :14:00.
this is our top story tonight: Coarsely Government to step up | :14:01. | :14:10.
security in the south east `fter footage of suspected migrants | :14:11. | :14:13.
getting out of a lorry on a motorway in Kent. MPs want to see an increase | :14:14. | :14:23.
in border staff. Also, how local dances are joining the profdssionals | :14:24. | :14:26.
in a unique production markhng the end of the mining strike. And it's | :14:27. | :14:31.
staying dry, bright and mild as we head towards the weekend. I'll have | :14:32. | :14:34.
all the details in the forecast later in the programme. | :14:35. | :14:51.
In its heyday, the board gale "Escape from Colditz" was more | :14:52. | :14:53.
It was launched following the success of the 1970s BBC | :14:54. | :14:57.
television series Colditz - co-written by one of the orhginal | :14:58. | :14:59.
escapees, the late Major Pat Reid - and Broadstairs-based screenwriter | :15:00. | :15:01.
Colditz was a high-security Nazi prison for captured allied soldiers | :15:02. | :15:05.
who'd tried to escape from other camps. | :15:06. | :15:12.
The board game was launched in 1973. | :15:13. | :15:15.
It sold hundreds of thousands of copies and the original sells | :15:16. | :15:18.
Now a new edition of the game's being released. | :15:19. | :15:21.
Claudia Sermbezis has been to meet its creator to find out why | :15:22. | :15:24.
he has been motivated to recreate it for | :15:25. | :15:26.
television series after meeting Major Pat Reid. | :15:27. | :15:32.
Together, they spoke to his fellow prisoners and chronicled | :15:33. | :15:34.
You like to remember what you want to remember | :15:35. | :15:39.
and forget those things that you want to forget. | :15:40. | :15:46.
I had to probe into things that they | :15:47. | :15:47.
So we can establish who was the senior officer `mong us, | :15:48. | :15:52.
He's a general called General Colin Purdon, and hd's 4. | :15:53. | :16:00.
Unconquerable until the curse of Hitler is lifted from thd | :16:01. | :16:13.
Brian Degas thought Colditz would make a great board gale. | :16:14. | :16:18.
You had to escape from ropes, jump, and he spoke to Major Pat Rdid, and | :16:19. | :16:22.
The mathematics alone of the rolling dice. | :16:23. | :16:32.
Because the rolling of dice is about luck. | :16:33. | :16:34.
"Let's get my old mates" and he brought in for old prisoner of | :16:35. | :16:43.
The man who took over from him when he escaped. | :16:44. | :16:47.
Brian Degas was a writer and on many classic movies `nd | :16:48. | :17:02.
television shows, including the Saint, Specials and Barbarella. | :17:03. | :17:03.
His board games endured the longest, selling | :17:04. | :17:05.
Now, a new updated version will be released. | :17:06. | :17:10.
The board to play is three-dimensional. | :17:11. | :17:15.
You actually are looking down and you can see the walls. | :17:16. | :17:17.
Next year will be the 75th anniversary of the escape of | :17:18. | :17:23.
He died in 1990, but his memories live on | :17:24. | :17:30.
through Brian Degas, the keeper of the story of Colditz. | :17:31. | :17:41.
Mark Gatiss has become one of the most influential TV writers | :17:42. | :17:43.
and actors of his generation - responsible for helping cre`te | :17:44. | :17:46.
the modern Sherlock, and for shaping the direction | :17:47. | :17:48.
Now he's coming to Sussex to star in a new production | :17:49. | :17:55.
of the renowned gay play Boys in the Band, | :17:56. | :17:57.
which broke new ground when it was first shown | :17:58. | :18:00.
Jane Witherspoon has been to meet him ahead of it comhng | :18:01. | :18:03.
From the League of Gentlemen to Sherlock... | :18:04. | :18:11.
Well, you don't need to know about that, do you? | :18:12. | :18:14.
..writer and actor Mark Gattis is both a star of the screen | :18:15. | :18:17.
And he's back treading the boards in The Boys In The Band. | :18:18. | :18:21.
Described as the first gay play, it was a smash hit | :18:22. | :18:24.
In a sense, it's a period phece because things have changed | :18:25. | :18:33.
We were all struck, every nhght by talking to people | :18:34. | :18:39.
afterwards about how much they say, well, | :18:40. | :18:40.
To me, it's very important not to imagine everything has | :18:41. | :18:44.
Equal age of consent and gax marriage and everything, but | :18:45. | :18:49.
there are some parts of the world where it is actively lethal to be | :18:50. | :18:53.
Ladies and gentlemen, I am Richard Lazarus, | :18:54. | :19:02.
Mark's just finished writing his tenth episode of Doctor | :19:03. | :19:11.

I remember the very first time I actually wrote | :19:15. | :19:17.
"Interior Tardis" and either just like... | :19:18. | :19:24.
Despite working on some of our biggest | :19:25. | :19:29.
shows, he said TV in the digital age can be a challenge. | :19:30. | :19:32.
The notion of people sitting down in front of the | :19:33. | :19:38.
television, except for something like Bake-off. | :19:39. | :19:40.
People usually talk about those as the big two. | :19:41. | :19:44.
I mean, kids just watch TV on their phones or the tabldts. | :19:45. | :19:52.
The idea of having to wait for something has kind | :19:53. | :19:54.
It's exciting but frightening for those of us from an | :19:55. | :19:59.

Brighton from the 8th to the 12th of November. | :20:04. | :20:19.
And he was battling a cold to do that so we are very grateful for him | :20:20. | :20:22.
joining us. Football and all of our league teams | :20:23. | :20:24.
are in action tomorrow. Charlton Athletic host Chesterfield | :20:25. | :20:26.

The miners strike was one of the most controversial areas evdr seen | :21:35. | :21:35.
in the country. own Strictly Come Dancing moment | :21:36. | :21:40.
tonight when they join contemporary dancers on stage | :21:41. | :21:45.
at The Gulbenkian in Canterbury They've gone from complete novices | :21:46. | :21:47.
to stage performers - trained by professionals for a one | :21:48. | :21:49.
off sell out show. Their qualifications includdd | :21:50. | :21:51.
personal links to coal mining - the touring production is c`lled | :21:52. | :21:53.
Coal and, as the name suggests, it explores the world of mining | :21:54. | :21:56.
and the miners' strike of the 1 80s. It's an exciting | :21:57. | :21:59.
and moving performance, Its use contemporary | :22:00. | :22:01.
dance to tell stories of mining communities | :22:02. | :22:04.
will no doubt raise a few As it did with four East Kent | :22:05. | :22:07.
women who have joined the c`st. I couldn't understand how | :22:08. | :22:11.
you could demonstrate dirty job, a strong, | :22:12. | :22:12.
male-dominated thing through dance. Dance is usually a fluffy, | :22:13. | :22:16.
very middle-class type thing. Dance is also used to revisht | :22:17. | :22:18.
the troubled era of mining It was a conflict which set | :22:19. | :22:35.
whole communities at odds It's brought many former | :22:36. | :22:42.
miners to see the production as it has | :22:43. | :22:49.
toured the country. We have had people walk out, | :22:50. | :23:01.
people stand up in protest, The East Kent performers | :23:02. | :23:03.
are seen as miners' wives They learn dance from scratch but, | :23:04. | :23:10.
in their real lives, coal and My great grandad and my uncle | :23:11. | :23:17.
Willie were both miners. I've got my uncle Willie's liner's | :23:18. | :23:23.
lamp and I was going to bring it but it was | :23:24. | :23:25.
a bit heavy for the bus. Now that I am here, I want to be | :23:26. | :23:28.
more than one I want a bigger theatre, | :23:29. | :23:31.
I want everybody to be seeing it because I'm just loving | :23:32. | :23:35.
the whole experience. It's a story for people | :23:36. | :23:37.
to be reminded of. A part in a sell-out, | :23:38. | :23:41.
one-off show, a performance that I'm sure they will. It's tile to | :23:42. | :23:56.
check on the weather now. R`chel, the lovely autumn weather continues. | :23:57. | :24:01.
Yes, it does and it will continue over the weekend ended to H`lloween | :24:02. | :24:07.

Firmly in control of things. There has been some brightness around as | :24:14. | :24:17.

we head towards the weekend as well. It will be a mostly dry pitch with | :24:32. | :24:37.
some mist and fork. Probablx more cloud around for Saturday and a | :24:38. | :24:41.
brighter picture this Sundax. You also get an extra al in bed for | :24:42. | :24:45.
Sunday as the clocks go back. As they go through tonight, cldarer | :24:46. | :24:50.
skies and lighter winds, with a bit of mist and fog. Some cloud cover, | :24:51. | :24:56.
too. Not as chilly as it has been promoted the week and, for the most | :24:57. | :25:00.
part, we'll be staying in double figures with lows around 12 Celsius. | :25:01. | :25:03.
We have this area of high pressure that will be staying with us as we | :25:04. | :25:07.
head to the weekend and into the new week as well. First thing, there | :25:08. | :25:11.
will be some mist and fog, some more cloud cover generally. First out | :25:12. | :25:18.
about -- for Saturday, a cldar, lovely, autumnal day. Temperatures | :25:19. | :25:22.
reaching highs around 15 Celsius. Again, with lighter winds. Saturday | :25:23. | :25:27.
into Sunday, more of the sale. An extra hour in bed. Overnight | :25:28. | :25:34.
captures dropping to around 10- 1dC. Many places seeing slobbering mist | :25:35. | :25:38.
and fog. A murky start to the day on Sunday with some temperaturds | :25:39. | :25:45.
dropping to around 13 Celsits. We will see it then shopped around 16 | :25:46. | :25:50.
Celsius again the later we get. Good news for kids who will be going out | :25:51. | :25:54.
trick or treating. Temperattres will be around 15-16 Celsius and it will | :25:55. | :26:02.
be drive. But by the time wd get to Wednesday next week, more cloud | :26:03. | :26:05.
cover and temperature is cooling down with another area I prdssure | :26:06. | :26:08.
building back in again. Lots of dry, autumnal weather on the way as he | :26:09. | :26:14.
heads through the weekend, lore cloud for Saturday, brighter by | :26:15. | :26:16.
Sunday afternoon. The clocks go back. Settled for Halloween and | :26:17. | :26:22.
Tuesday as well, eventually turning wet on Wednesday with lots of | :26:23. | :26:25.
lovely, autumnal weather ovdr the weekend. | :26:26. | :26:29.
Those trees would beautiful as well, don't they? Yes, and I think | :26:30. | :26:33.
everyone has been reminded dnough that the clocks go back. Yes, a lie | :26:34. | :26:39.
in for you on Sunday. Yes, they go back. That's all from us. Sde you | :26:40. | :26:41.
later. Goodbye. It took us once to get through | :26:42. | :26:54.
the novel Anna Karenina. It was used to help my friend | :26:55. | :27:00.
with depression, and finishing as we went | :27:01. | :27:03.
to sleep at night. tapping each letter through the wall | :27:04. | :27:08.
that divided our cells as we served life sentences | :27:09. | :27:13.
in solitary confinement. We promise to encourage | :27:14. | :27:17.
others to dream big Why do you want to go to | :27:18. | :27:26.
Great Britain? Because it is Great Britain, | :27:27. | :27:29.
you see? Great. Come home straight after | :27:30. | :27:31.
computer club. I will! | :27:32. | :27:39. |
