Now it's time for the news where you are. | :00:00. | :00:09.
Dozens of flights have been cancelled at Gatwick | :00:10. | :00:15.
airport due to heavy fog across the South East and Europe. | :00:16. | :00:18.
Air traffic control have imposed restrictions causing delays | :00:19. | :00:20.
to inward and outbound flights and some cancellations. | :00:21. | :00:23.
Well, we can join our reporter Amanda Akass overlooking | :00:24. | :00:25.
And, Amanda, what are the conditions like there? | :00:26. | :00:38.
It is more a case of what you cannot see behind me. Italy is covered in | :00:39. | :00:45.
thick fog and flights began been cancelled earlier this afternoon we | :00:46. | :00:50.
understand from easyJet, they are the ground 56 flights. -- the runway | :00:51. | :00:57.
is covered in thick fog. Many other flights to Europe have been | :00:58. | :01:01.
cancelled as well. We have just heard one fight at was heading from | :01:02. | :01:07.
Turkey has had to be diverted to Birmingham. We know from social | :01:08. | :01:10.
media there are many people waiting at the airport for their flights and | :01:11. | :01:14.
had been told by staff they should go home for the evening and any | :01:15. | :01:18.
state and Gatwick Airport told us the restrictions have been brought | :01:19. | :01:21.
in by air traffic control and anyone who wants to travel should check | :01:22. | :01:26.
with the ailing before setting out. -- in a statement. To we know how | :01:27. | :01:33.
long this will go on for? The Met office issued EU weather warning for | :01:34. | :01:37.
freezing conditions across the south-east in place until 10am | :01:38. | :01:43.
tomorrow morning so this should be expected to carry on well until the | :01:44. | :01:47.
middle of the morning tomorrow for people setting off a New Year's you. | :01:48. | :01:53.
Gatwick via -- say they're working hard to keep people living and have | :01:54. | :01:55.
brought in additional staff at the airport. | :01:56. | :02:01.
Within the last hour we've also heard that the Brighton's home game | :02:02. | :02:06.
against Cardiff has been postponed due to the fog. | :02:07. | :02:08.
But the Gillingham game at Millwall is due to go ahead. | :02:09. | :02:11.
Southern Rail is warning of severe disruption | :02:12. | :02:16.
on its network once again, as train conductors stage | :02:17. | :02:18.
The company says some routes will have no service | :02:19. | :02:22.
at all tomorrow, New Year's Day and Monday the 2nd, | :02:23. | :02:24.
while the majority of others will have a very limited service. | :02:25. | :02:27.
It's the traditional way to see in the new year, | :02:28. | :02:32.
but could the London fireworks fall flat for south-east partygoers? | :02:33. | :02:34.
Another train strike means services home | :02:35. | :02:36.
It is a bit of a disgrace that it has gone on for as long as it has. | :02:37. | :02:42.
You would have thought something would have been sorted by now. | :02:43. | :02:44.
They have a right to go on strike, even though it will inconvenience | :02:45. | :02:47.
other people, but in a way I am kind of with them. | :02:48. | :02:50.
It is not great because it is New Year's Eve. | :02:51. | :02:54.
I mean, I fully appreciate everything going on with | :02:55. | :02:56.
This is Britain's worst train strike in 20 years. | :02:57. | :03:01.
It is over Southern's plans to make drivers solely | :03:02. | :03:03.
responsible for train safety, using CCTV cameras to monitor doors. | :03:04. | :03:09.
The proposals we made were entirely reasonable and we think the union's | :03:10. | :03:12.
reaction has been unreasonable and disproportionate and we think | :03:13. | :03:15.
strikes are absolutely unnecessary and I call upon the trade unions | :03:16. | :03:18.
to consider calling off the strikes, even at this late moment. | :03:19. | :03:22.
But the unions say they have the public on their side. | :03:23. | :03:25.
We did cancel the strikes on Christmas Eve and the day | :03:26. | :03:28.
We have done everything we can to recognise that the public have | :03:29. | :03:35.
been wonderful supporting our position on maintaining | :03:36. | :03:38.
the safety and critical role of the guard on the train. | :03:39. | :03:43.
This strike will start tomorrow for three days, | :03:44. | :03:46.
with another planned for January the 9th. | :03:47. | :03:48.
Many will be hoping for a New Year's resolution to the ongoing crisis. | :03:49. | :03:55.
And just a reminder that BBC South East Today is hosting | :03:56. | :03:58.
a special Question Time-style debate about the ongoing crisis | :03:59. | :04:00.
on Southern rail services on Sunday the 8th of January. | :04:01. | :04:02.
If you live or work in the south-east and want to be | :04:03. | :04:05.
in the audience, send an email to [email protected] | :04:06. | :04:07.
with your details and how you've been affected. | :04:08. | :04:15.
Hospital emergency departments in the south-east say | :04:16. | :04:18.
they're experiencing extremely high demand with the A department | :04:19. | :04:23.
at the Medway Maritime Hospital saying it has more patients coming | :04:24. | :04:27.
Patients in East Kent have had to wait up to four | :04:28. | :04:31.
In Sussex, hospitals say they are under | :04:32. | :04:36.
Our health Correspondent Mark Norman is outside the Medway Maritime | :04:37. | :04:39.
in Gillingham - Mark, was this expected? | :04:40. | :04:49.
No, this is traditionally a quiet week. It began with the Ambulance | :04:50. | :04:56.
Service over Christmas who five found an emergency call and said | :04:57. | :04:58.
they were struggling to reach some emergency calls -- 5000 emergency | :04:59. | :05:05.
calls. In East Kent there were more than four hour waiting times at both | :05:06. | :05:12.
of the major A's. Brighton are seen large numbers of acutely unwell | :05:13. | :05:18.
patients and the same situation in Surrey and other places and fewer in | :05:19. | :05:22.
Medway, as you say, the worrying situation of more patients coming in | :05:23. | :05:27.
at the door than they have beds available. We have been speaking to | :05:28. | :05:30.
the matron in charge of A here today. | :05:31. | :05:31.
For the past few weeks we have seen a really high numbers of patients | :05:32. | :05:35.
attending the emergency department of Medway. | :05:36. | :05:36.
We're usually very busy in the run-up to Christmas | :05:37. | :05:38.
but we usually see a lull over the few days of Christmas | :05:39. | :05:41.
and we just have not seen that this year, | :05:42. | :05:44.
so the department has been under constant pressure | :05:45. | :05:45.
What is the advice from hospital? The problem is this weekend will be | :05:46. | :05:56.
one of the busiest of the year at the advice is, have you called NHS | :05:57. | :06:05.
111 and checked for out of hours GP service or minor injuries unit? But | :06:06. | :06:09.
if you turn up at A you will be seen and treated but if it is not an | :06:10. | :06:14.
emergency you will have wait. Now let's get the weather. That fog | :06:15. | :06:20.
has been a real problem today but the difference has been it has not | :06:21. | :06:26.
moved so for most of us we have had seemed like this for much of the | :06:27. | :06:31.
day. However, one of our weather Watchers got above the fog and we | :06:32. | :06:35.
had this beautiful picture. There was some clear skies somewhere | :06:36. | :06:39.
across the south-east today but that Met Office warning stays through | :06:40. | :06:44.
tonight and into tomorrow so we are expecting some further disruption | :06:45. | :06:48.
with poor visibility. You can see hot it thickens through the early | :06:49. | :06:52.
hours, combined with temperatures at around freezing we will see freezing | :06:53. | :06:57.
fog patches and it will be a chilly start. Much of that mist and fog | :06:58. | :07:05.
should lift into low cloud but it will take its time and into the | :07:06. | :07:08.
afternoon where we might see some brightness but predominantly cloudy | :07:09. | :07:12.
and temperatures around six Celsius throughout the afternoon. Through | :07:13. | :07:16.
the evening it stays dry, quite cloudy skies but at least it will be | :07:17. | :07:21.
dry as we head towards New Year and those temperatures through the | :07:22. | :07:26.
evening will not change a great deal from daytime temperatures soar still | :07:27. | :07:31.
we are looking at temperatures of six Celsius. For anyone heading out | :07:32. | :07:35.
around midnight. He will change by Sunday because a weather front is | :07:36. | :07:38.
moving down and it will be cloudy with outbreaks of rain, some of | :07:39. | :07:48.
which will be heavy in the afternoon. Even in the evening still | :07:49. | :07:50.
cloudy and damp with temperatures around seven Celsius. Once that | :07:51. | :07:53.
clears, Monday and Tuesday were dry and bright with some sunshine but | :07:54. | :07:58.
timing Calder once again. We are back at 10:50pm tonight. Have | :07:59. | :08:01.
a good evening. Good night. Good evening, fog has been a problem | :08:02. | :08:13.
in recent days, slow | :08:14. | :08:14. |
