Welcome to South East Today, I'm Rob Smith.

:00:00.:00:00.

The revenge porn offender who posted photos on X-rated websites is banned

:00:00.:00:08.

Leaving his victims suffering fear, discussed and extreme humiliation.

:00:09.:00:21.

There's photos of one of the girls's weddings that he's in and stuff

:00:22.:00:24.

and it's marred all of our memories of certain times in our lives.

:00:25.:00:27.

A memorial match in honour of murdered policeman Keith Palmer.

Charlton Athletic donate half tonight's gate

:00:31.:00:31.

We'll be live at The Valley with the details.

:00:32.:00:34.

between staff and management on Southern Rail -

:00:35.:00:38.

Is a legal loophole forcing drivers to spend hundreds of pounds

:00:39.:00:42.

And the nuclear option - how Britain planned to blow up

:00:43.:00:49.

the Channel Tunnel to keep the Russians out,

:00:50.:00:52.

A man who posted images of women he knew onto a so-called

:00:53.:01:14.

revenge-porn website, inviting others to leave graphic

:01:15.:01:15.

Oliver Whiting from Eastbourne stole photos from the social media pages

:01:16.:01:19.

of two women he knew, adding what the judge called "vile,

:01:20.:01:24.

One of his victims was left in tears outside court,

:01:25.:01:35.

and angry, distressed that he won't be going to jail and told us

:01:36.:01:38.

she believed Sussex Police should have done more

:01:39.:01:40.

Our special correspondent Colin Campbell reports

:01:41.:01:43.

Mr Whiting, have you got anything to say to your victims?

:01:44.:01:46.

Spared jail, Oliver Whiting caused his victims

:01:47.:01:48.

fear, disgust and extreme humiliation.

:01:49.:01:50.

What you did has caused a great deal of upset and distress

:01:51.:01:53.

He uploaded innocent pictures of them to a US porn site.

:01:54.:02:01.

Your victims think that you should be in prison.

:02:02.:02:03.

Adding repulsive and extremely aggressive and violent

:02:04.:02:05.

So do you have anything to say to your victims?

:02:06.:02:08.

You are hiding your face now when you put all of their faces

:02:09.:02:12.

He encouraged others to use the images

:02:13.:02:15.

One of the images he posted was of a 16-year-old

:02:16.:02:25.

schoolgirl, another of Nikki Elliott and her young child.

:02:26.:02:27.

They were changed into being explicit photos

:02:28.:02:31.

so they were just normal ones and we were all

:02:32.:02:33.

saying earlier there is photos

:02:34.:02:34.

of one of the girl's weddings that he is in and stuff and it has

:02:35.:02:38.

just marred all of our memories as certain times in our lives

:02:39.:02:41.

because we look at photos and we see that

:02:42.:02:43.

they are photos that have been put on the website.

:02:44.:02:45.

Sentencing him to a six-month suspended jail term,

:02:46.:02:47.

District Judge Teresa Szagun told Whiting "what you used those

:02:48.:02:52.

The accompanying comments were vile, aggressive

:02:53.:02:58.

The impact to the victims has been far reaching."

:02:59.:03:05.

We think that our stuff is safe online, what we put online is only

:03:06.:03:08.

to our friends and family and we just need to make sure that when we

:03:09.:03:12.

upload photos that we're saying they are private between those

:03:13.:03:14.

people but whatever you put online stays online

:03:15.:03:16.

Whiting initially received just a caution for similar offences

:03:17.:03:20.

against four other women last year, prompting anger from victims who

:03:21.:03:24.

They mislaid all of our stuff so we put in a statement

:03:25.:03:32.

and they mislaid it and so that is why it has been reopened.

:03:33.:03:36.

I didn't know criminals were given police escorts!

:03:37.:03:39.

Witnessing Oliver Whiting being guarded by police in and out

:03:40.:03:47.

of court, victims have been left in further distress,

:03:48.:03:49.

knowing their violated personal images remain on the internet.

:03:50.:03:56.

Colin is in Hastings now where the curse was heard today. The US

:03:57.:04:02.

website which he used where the pictures were put up, they have

:04:03.:04:08.

refused to take it down? Yes, we understand that many of

:04:09.:04:11.

these images of young women remain on that unique base pornographic

:04:12.:04:16.

website and despite requests from the victims themselves and from the

:04:17.:04:20.

police, the American company has so far declined to remove the

:04:21.:04:23.

photographs. In court today we heard that Oliver Whiting may be able to

:04:24.:04:27.

get the images removed himself but only after he pays the company a

:04:28.:04:32.

cash payment. Sussex Police say that they provided Oliver Whiting with an

:04:33.:04:36.

escort in and out of court today because they feared there may be a

:04:37.:04:39.

breach of the peace. Sussex Police say that they accept that their

:04:40.:04:43.

offices require better and more training when it comes to dealing

:04:44.:04:47.

with this type of new cybercrime and say that as a process which is

:04:48.:04:49.

already underway. Thank you.

:04:50.:04:52.

Keith Palmer is the policeman who lost his life in Khalid Masood's

:04:53.:04:55.

terror attack on the Houses of Parliament last month.

:04:56.:04:57.

Tonight Charlton Athletic Football Club will donating half of ticket

:04:58.:05:00.

sales from their match to support his widow Michelle,

:05:01.:05:02.

PC Palmer was a regular at The Valley for many years

:05:03.:05:09.

and his usual seat has been draped in a Charlton flag in tribute.

:05:10.:05:13.

22 of his fellow officers will follow the players out

:05:14.:05:15.

of the tunnel before kick-off and then join them

:05:16.:05:17.

Let's cross to The Valley now, and speak to our

:05:18.:05:21.

Tonight's match against the Milton Keynes Dons Football club's home

:05:22.:05:35.

match at the Valley since the Westminster terror attack. This is

:05:36.:05:37.

the first opportunity for the club and the fans to come together and to

:05:38.:05:41.

express their collective grief at the loss of a member of their

:05:42.:05:44.

football family. Murdered in the line of duty, PC

:05:45.:05:46.

Keith Palmer has been hailed a hero who gave his life for others

:05:47.:05:49.

in the Westminster terror attack. To fellow fans of his beloved

:05:50.:05:53.

Charlton, he was family. It is why tonight's game

:05:54.:05:57.

at The Valley will be When something like

:05:58.:05:59.

this happens, you You feel like you owe someone

:06:00.:06:04.

like Keith a fitting tribute and I hope we will give him

:06:05.:06:09.

that tribute tonight. Well, this is the home dressing room

:06:10.:06:19.

at The Valley and this is the special shirt that

:06:20.:06:22.

the players will be wearing tonight, dedicated in memory

:06:23.:06:24.

of PC Keith Palmer. On the back, the hashtag

:06:25.:06:27.

"we stand together". The players are also

:06:28.:06:34.

donating their appearance fees while half the gate receipts will go

:06:35.:06:36.

to PC Palmer's family. In the stands, a solitary

:06:37.:06:41.

white seat will remain empty tonight, a reminder

:06:42.:06:44.

of where Keith Palmer sat Charlton's always been

:06:45.:06:47.

a family club, hasn't it? They've always been

:06:48.:06:52.

for the kids and for any club to lose anyone

:06:53.:06:57.

like that is a big thing. When you walk up the road,

:06:58.:07:00.

you see all the flowers up there It will be a very sad night but,

:07:01.:07:06.

you know, Charlton obviously But this is a tragedy that has

:07:07.:07:11.

united fans of every colour. Chelsea supporter Diana Jupp

:07:12.:07:16.

has made the journey to Unfortunately he lost his life

:07:17.:07:18.

but he was the same as us, We all love football

:07:19.:07:27.

so regardless of what team we support, when a tragedy happens,

:07:28.:07:40.

we all come together. United in sadness, tonight

:07:41.:07:43.

fans will pay tribute We are just over an hour or so away

:07:44.:07:58.

from kick-off but before that happens, PC par's stepbrother will

:07:59.:08:01.

lead at Teamster Knight to the tunnel and then into the centre

:08:02.:08:07.

circle. -- Palmer. They will be joined by 22 former police officers

:08:08.:08:13.

colleagues of PC Clive Palmer to join in a minute's silence. --

:08:14.:08:17.

Keith. It is certainly to be an emotional night here at the Valley.

:08:18.:08:18.

And Q. How a row over tax for locum doctors

:08:19.:08:20.

could lead to a Kent hospital having to cut back on its accident

:08:21.:08:25.

and emergency cover. One of the top negotiators

:08:26.:08:35.

with the train drivers union Aslef says he's "not surprised" a deal

:08:36.:08:37.

brokered between the union and Southern Rail was

:08:38.:08:40.

rejected by his members because their relationship

:08:41.:08:44.

is "utterly toxic". In an exclusive interview

:08:45.:08:45.

with BBC South East Today, Simon Weller said that drivers have

:08:46.:08:47.

trust issues with Southern The dispute is over the introduction

:08:48.:08:50.

of driver only operation on trains. The deal was rejected yesterday

:08:51.:09:01.

despite the company agreeing that on-board CCTV systems would be

:09:02.:09:03.

upgraded and that on board supervisors would receive

:09:04.:09:06.

extra safety training. In a moment I'll be talking live

:09:07.:09:09.

with a senior member of management from Southern,

:09:10.:09:12.

first Amanda Akass has The defined memory of decades of

:09:13.:09:23.

past industrial accident greet everyone who walks through the door

:09:24.:09:27.

of Aslef's headquarters in London. It leaders had been hoping the

:09:28.:09:30.

latest dispute would soon be consigned to history as well. There

:09:31.:09:34.

is a complete class a drug of Southern and members don't believe

:09:35.:09:38.

Southern will keep to their side of the bargain. The relationship

:09:39.:09:44.

between Southern and their staff, it is just utterly toxic. The way they

:09:45.:09:48.

have been treating people, passengers as well in the run-up to

:09:49.:09:51.

these disputes and during these dispute has broken any trust. The

:09:52.:09:56.

two rejected deal set up a list of exceptional circumstances when

:09:57.:09:58.

Southern would be allowed to run trains without a second member of

:09:59.:10:02.

staff on board. The conductance union the RMT argued that should

:10:03.:10:07.

never happen. While the RMT began their industrial action a year ago,

:10:08.:10:12.

the first of six Aslef strike this was in December bringing Southern

:10:13.:10:15.

services to a complete standstill. But at the start of fabric, Aslef

:10:16.:10:19.

when Southern announced they had come to a deal. It was rejected

:10:20.:10:23.

later that month. The second deal was struck on March the 15th after

:10:24.:10:28.

another three weeks of negotiations. It is almost unprecedented over the

:10:29.:10:31.

history of industrial relations in the UK, we have seen disputes,

:10:32.:10:35.

hostile disputes, bitter disputes that ultimately there is a

:10:36.:10:41.

resolution. We look at the dispute here, it does not seem to be any

:10:42.:10:44.

positive way forward. Commuters are fed up. It is ridiculous that they

:10:45.:10:49.

have not come to more of an agreement. It seems to have got

:10:50.:10:54.

worse. They both have to have their heads banged together. There has to

:10:55.:10:58.

be light at the end of the tunnel, it cannot go on like this forever.

:10:59.:11:02.

It is really annoying. Aslef leaders insist they have the confidence of

:11:03.:11:06.

their members and they are committed to resuming negotiations. But if a

:11:07.:11:09.

better deal is not reach, they say that the strikes are not off the

:11:10.:11:11.

table. I'm joined by Angie Doll,

:11:12.:11:12.

from Southern Rail. Thank you for being with us this

:11:13.:11:21.

evening. Rail users will be massively disappointed that this

:11:22.:11:25.

deal, the second time round was not accepted by members. The problem

:11:26.:11:28.

seems to be that just not enough drivers trust you.

:11:29.:11:33.

I am out on the network every day speaking to our drivers and our

:11:34.:11:36.

staff and I do not think this is about an issue of trust. I see there

:11:37.:11:40.

is a good relationships and trust with our managers on the ground. It

:11:41.:11:45.

is very disappointing that this ballot was rejected by such a narrow

:11:46.:11:49.

margin. But it was rejected and it comes down to the fact that they do

:11:50.:11:52.

believe, a lot of drivers do believe that you should have a second safety

:11:53.:11:57.

critical person on all trains. We will be going back to talks next

:11:58.:12:02.

week with Aslef again. Aslef's executive did endorse this agreement

:12:03.:12:05.

and pitted out to their members to recommend that they except the

:12:06.:12:09.

ballot. We will be going back to speak to Aslef next week to explore

:12:10.:12:13.

a little bit more and understand the reasons why... Unless you have a

:12:14.:12:17.

safety critical person on all trains, they are going to say no

:12:18.:12:20.

again and again. That is what Bsaid right from the beginning, that is

:12:21.:12:24.

what Aslef have said and if you will not concede that point, it is not

:12:25.:12:29.

going to end. The dispute with Aslef is different to the dispute with

:12:30.:12:32.

RMT. We have a good relationship with Aslef, we have been in talks

:12:33.:12:36.

with them. Both parties are committed to finding a resolution.

:12:37.:12:39.

We know what the resolution is, to have this second safety critical

:12:40.:12:44.

person on the train. We offered a good deal and we need to explore now

:12:45.:12:49.

with Aslef negotiating team and talking to our members to understand

:12:50.:12:52.

whatever we need to do differently to get this over the line. It was

:12:53.:12:56.

very close, just margin will be the number of people that voted against

:12:57.:13:00.

it there are a lot of drivers out there who will support this deal. We

:13:01.:13:04.

are absolutely knitted to getting this across the line. Why is

:13:05.:13:09.

Southern so committed to not making that final commitment to not having

:13:10.:13:14.

a second safety critical person on every train? We have said that we

:13:15.:13:18.

have a second person on the train where we have had a conductor. We

:13:19.:13:21.

had moved to this method of operation and we've made the changes

:13:22.:13:25.

back in January. All the staff are now working as the on-board

:13:26.:13:28.

supervisors and adapting to the road really well. We are looking for some

:13:29.:13:34.

exceptional circumstances but as I said, we are committed to meeting

:13:35.:13:38.

with Aslef next week and exploring more, what further concessions need

:13:39.:13:41.

to be made to get this agreement over the line. You think Aslef can

:13:42.:13:47.

deliver deal? I think we can. Both parties here are committed to

:13:48.:13:51.

finding and enter this, not only for the passengers sick but also our

:13:52.:13:55.

staff's sake. Angie Doll, thank you for being with us.

:13:56.:13:58.

Six Iranian migrants have been rescued from a sinking boat

:13:59.:14:01.

as they attempted to cross the English Channel from Calais

:14:02.:14:03.

French authorities received a distress call from the small

:14:04.:14:07.

fishing vessel just after midnight and found the group one mile

:14:08.:14:09.

It comes after a dozen incidents off Kent and Sussex last year.

:14:10.:14:16.

Customs officers are searching for a lorry driver who's gone

:14:17.:14:19.

on the run after being caught smuggling more than

:14:20.:14:22.

5.7 million cigarettes into the UK through Dover.

:14:23.:14:24.

Richard David Curtis, from South Yorkshire,

:14:25.:14:25.

hid them beneath boxes of frozen chips.

:14:26.:14:27.

He failed to turn up to his trial at Maidstone Crown Court

:14:28.:14:29.

and was found guilty of evading more than ?1.3 million in excise duty.

:14:30.:14:36.

This programme can exclusively reveal that the future

:14:37.:14:38.

of the Kent Surrey and Sussex Air Ambulance is secure.

:14:39.:14:41.

Fears were raised when it was announced that development

:14:42.:14:45.

at Redhill Aerodrome could mean it would have to move but today it's

:14:46.:14:48.

been announced that a new 25-year lease has been signed

:14:49.:14:54.

for the operation to remain at the aerodrome.

:14:55.:15:06.

A Kent Hospital is making contingency plans to cope if age

:15:07.:15:11.

doctors refuse to work later this week in a row over changes to their

:15:12.:15:14.

tax that could see their take-home pay cut by 20%. This programme has

:15:15.:15:25.

been a document drawn up by medical staff at the Queen Elizabeth, the

:15:26.:15:28.

Queen Mother Hospital in Margate which could see major changes.

:15:29.:15:34.

From Thursday, it is feared many are set to stay at home in a row over

:15:35.:15:40.

tax rules. BBC understands that at least one Kent hospital, the Queen

:15:41.:15:44.

Elizabeth, the Queen Mother in Margate has already rearranged its

:15:45.:15:47.

rotors in anticipation. I think anything that takes pay away

:15:48.:15:51.

from locums at the moment is bad. We need to support all of them at the

:15:52.:15:55.

moment because otherwise serve are going to be on safer patient and we

:15:56.:15:59.

cannot have that. Government route changes mean locums will have to pay

:16:00.:16:04.

more money in tax and seeing their take-home pay full overnight. We

:16:05.:16:07.

understand that some are asking hospitals to up their rates to make

:16:08.:16:12.

the difference which many can't do. South Thanet MP and chartered

:16:13.:16:16.

accountant believes any stay at home will be short lived. There is no

:16:17.:16:20.

other provider our bird that will be buying their services. I think we

:16:21.:16:23.

have got to live in the real world. It is not going to happen and I will

:16:24.:16:26.

be fighting against any thing that is going to upset services at the

:16:27.:16:32.

hospital. BBC understands that the hospital has rejected some of the

:16:33.:16:35.

measures drawn up by staff to deal with the shortage of ligands. In a

:16:36.:16:39.

statement, the trust said we had not considered and not introducing any

:16:40.:16:43.

partial closers, temporary or otherwise to the accident and

:16:44.:16:46.

emergency department of the hospital. All the closure of

:16:47.:16:50.

Buckland Hospital. As paying more money, a new rate of ?75 per has

:16:51.:16:56.

been rated four locums, Negri 's of more than 10%. The deputy executive

:16:57.:17:02.

has told us they are considering the look rate but has not agreed one as

:17:03.:17:04.

of yet. Our reporter Sara Smith

:17:05.:17:07.

is in Margate now. A lot of people are going to be

:17:08.:17:18.

worried about the situation. They are, east Kent hospitals trust,

:17:19.:17:24.

which this is a part, they have long had to rely on locums. Freelance

:17:25.:17:29.

doctors if you like because they have problems recruiting staff. It

:17:30.:17:32.

is a national problem but they say they have a particular problem here

:17:33.:17:35.

because of what they describe as their relatively isolated location.

:17:36.:17:42.

Staff are tempted to the big teaching hospitals in London. Two

:17:43.:17:46.

weeks ago, we reported Abbey Kent and Canterbury Hospital which is

:17:47.:17:51.

another hospital this trust, they were having to ship out that junior

:17:52.:17:55.

doctors here to the hospital in Ashford because they did not have

:17:56.:17:59.

the consultants to oversee their training. 88 times they have

:18:00.:18:03.

advertised for consultants over the past few months. What they say here

:18:04.:18:07.

is that whatever happens, there will not be any temporary partial

:18:08.:18:11.

closures of accident and emergency. Thank you.

:18:12.:18:14.

Motoring organisations say it's scandalous that hundreds of pothole

:18:15.:18:16.

compensation claims from drivers in Kent have been rejected -

:18:17.:18:19.

on the grounds the council was planning to repair the roads

:18:20.:18:21.

A little known law permits authorities to dismiss claims made

:18:22.:18:25.

by motorists whose cars have been damaged by defective roads,

:18:26.:18:27.

if they can demonstrate the road in question was scheduled for repair

:18:28.:18:31.

Recent analysis showed the overall road repair bill for councils

:18:32.:18:37.

nationally could reach ?14 billion within two years.

:18:38.:18:40.

Causing misery for motorists and often costing them money too.

:18:41.:18:47.

Repairs to pothole damage at this garage in Tunbridge Wells are

:18:48.:18:51.

increasingly common, particularly to the car springs.

:18:52.:18:56.

One bit flies off into the road normally, it can go in

:18:57.:18:59.

to a tyre, it can go into a brake hose and the other bit stays in, it

:19:00.:19:03.

Kent County Council won't pay compensation if they

:19:04.:19:11.

But even if they did, they give themselves up

:19:12.:19:15.

So if a car is damaged in that time, they won't offer compensation.

:19:16.:19:19.

Between 2015-2016, 395 claims were rejected

:19:20.:19:20.

on the basis that there was a plan in

place to repair the defect within a reasonable time.

:19:24.:19:25.

Over those two years, pay-outs were made

:19:26.:19:35.

in 208 cases, totalling over ?45,000.

:19:36.:19:37.

That is according to a freedom of information request by

:19:38.:19:40.

I think that's quite unfair and I've known

:19:41.:19:44.

potholes to be around a lot longer than a month so, yeah.

:19:45.:19:47.

Because you can't avoid it sometimes.

:19:48.:19:48.

Almost but I swerved and then almost hit another

:19:49.:19:52.

Not good enough, absolutely, it should be repaired as soon

:19:53.:19:58.

Otherwise anyone could have an accident or even injure

:19:59.:20:02.

Motoring organisations want more clarity.

:20:03.:20:17.

I think the legislation isn't actually

:20:18.:20:18.

strong enough and what we need is central government to actually help

:20:19.:20:21.

out in this scenario and help determine what a reasonable

:20:22.:20:24.

KCC say the repairs are prioritised based on

:20:25.:20:26.

As long as we have met that criteria and

:20:27.:20:30.

fixed it in the time we have said we are going to fix it,

:20:31.:20:33.

It can seem quite harsh but we have got to

:20:34.:20:39.

make a judgment about the safety of the rule dues and healthy for

:20:40.:20:42.

dangerous that pothole is going to be.

:20:43.:20:43.

They say they are spending an extra ?2.5 million on blitzing

:20:44.:20:46.

Simon Jones is in Aylesford for us now.

:20:47.:20:53.

Simon, how many potholes are actually being repaired?

:20:54.:21:03.

Each week, Kent gets reports of 300 potholes that need repairing and one

:21:04.:21:11.

week last month, that figure doubled to 600. This road is just round the

:21:12.:21:14.

corner from the depot where the pothole villas are based but rather

:21:15.:21:17.

embarrassing, down there you can see a big pothole in the raid and then

:21:18.:21:21.

right next to it, and even bigger pot hole. The big question is if you

:21:22.:21:25.

cannot get an sensation if the council does not know about the

:21:26.:21:29.

potholes, if you cannot get compensation if they do know about

:21:30.:21:32.

the potholes that they are planning to repair them in a certain time

:21:33.:21:36.

frame, when can you should get any money? It is if they miss themselves

:21:37.:21:41.

imposed deadline and your car gets damaged, you might get compensation.

:21:42.:21:45.

The council points that this money comes from the public purse and if

:21:46.:21:48.

they pay out compensation, it is taking money away from fixing more

:21:49.:21:50.

potholes. Oliver Whiting from Eastbourne

:21:51.:21:52.

posted stolen images of women he knew to a so called revenge-porn

website along with "vile, Sussex Police should have done more

to protect her and other women. And after a damp start,

:22:10.:22:15.

the afternoon brightened up with more sunshine on the

:22:16.:22:17.

way for tomorrow. I will have the details

:22:18.:22:19.

for you in the forecast a little If you have a story you think

we should be covering on South East Today,

we'd like to hear from you. You can call us on 0345 300 37 47,

tweet us @bbcsoutheast. In the 1950s, at the height

:22:33.:22:41.

of the Cold War, Britain was working on secret plans to defend

:22:42.:22:44.

the country in the event of a Russian invasion,

:22:45.:22:47.

including plans to blow up the Channel Tunnel

:22:48.:22:49.

with an atomic bomb, even though it hadn't

:22:50.:22:52.

been built yet. Newly released files reveal that

:22:53.:22:54.

in 1959 the Ministry of Defence advised any physical link

:22:55.:23:03.

with the continent could be vulnerable and should

:23:04.:23:04.

be "totally destroyed for defensive purposes

:23:05.:23:06.

if necessary". But conventional explosives wouldn't

:23:07.:23:07.

be destructive enough. Only an atomic bomb would

:23:08.:23:09.

be "100% effective". Fortunately the suggestion

:23:10.:23:12.

was later abandoned as it was realised there would be

:23:13.:23:15.

a certain amount of This is something more than the

:23:16.:23:33.

first atomic bomb. It is a shocking revelation. Can it really be true

:23:34.:23:37.

that an atomic bomb was ever considered as a way of sabotaging

:23:38.:23:41.

the Channel Tunnel in the event of a national emergency by defence

:23:42.:23:46.

experts advising the government? A silly idea. Crazy. It would do more

:23:47.:23:56.

damage than anything else. They contingency plans that may, properly

:23:57.:24:00.

won't need that. Properly floodlit. Can you imagine what would happen?

:24:01.:24:04.

It would be like a double barrel shotgun going off in both directions

:24:05.:24:08.

and operas well. The story has emerged from Department letter was

:24:09.:24:14.

kept in the National Archives. They revealed that as far back as the

:24:15.:24:19.

1950s, the idea of a nuclear blast to destroy the tunnel was under

:24:20.:24:23.

discussion. None of this with here then. The Channel tunnel system that

:24:24.:24:28.

we take for granted today was just a dream. The idea of destroying

:24:29.:24:32.

something which had not even been built, I guess that was a bit of

:24:33.:24:37.

blue sky or grey sky thinking in a world stock in Cold War made. For

:24:38.:24:44.

the second test, this was the plan. A propaganda film from 1940s

:24:45.:24:53.

illustrate the concept dramatically. The sound of the debtor nation

:24:54.:24:58.

reaches us. And if the technology existed, the arms race between the

:24:59.:25:02.

Western powers and the Soviet Union provided the motivation. Nuclear war

:25:03.:25:08.

seemed very real prospect. Duck and cover underneath the table desk. It

:25:09.:25:14.

was finally considered too expensive and too costly in terms of the

:25:15.:25:16.

desert station that would have ripped through Kent. -- devastation.

:25:17.:25:22.

So ticking nuclear time bomb never happen.

:25:23.:25:26.

Let's take a look at the weather. No nuclear fallout clouds to worry

:25:27.:25:34.

about. Plenty of blue skies on the way?

:25:35.:25:38.

Lots of cloud around, it does not seem so long ago that we were widely

:25:39.:25:46.

seen highs of 22 Celsius. Looking at the stats generally, so much, for

:25:47.:25:50.

the south-east, that made it the joint milder is on record. An

:25:51.:25:55.

average amount of rain. This morning, how brave the rain, not

:25:56.:25:58.

particularly heavy but cloudy, damp start to the day. A bit more

:25:59.:26:04.

brightness the afternoon. 13 Celsius. As we had to tonight, still

:26:05.:26:09.

some cloud, some patchily rain but the most part it is going to be

:26:10.:26:13.

easing. Pressure builds. We have got clearer skies, later winds and some

:26:14.:26:19.

mist and fog patches around. Overnight, six or seven Celsius in

:26:20.:26:23.

towns and cities, dropping to three or four in more rural slots. A

:26:24.:26:27.

chilly start to the day tomorrow. It will be bright. Through the

:26:28.:26:30.

afternoon, a bit more cloud cover around. The wind still relatively

:26:31.:26:35.

white, they are coming from a chilly north westerly direction. Why the

:26:36.:26:39.

temperatures tomorrow afternoon once again around average, 11 or 12

:26:40.:26:44.

Celsius. More cloud around during the afternoon. Eventually as you

:26:45.:26:47.

head through the first part of Wednesday evening, the chance you

:26:48.:26:50.

could catch one or two isolated showers. Towards the early hours of

:26:51.:26:55.

Thursday morning, they ease, clearer skies develop once more. Campus is

:26:56.:26:59.

milder but still widely in single figures, dropping to around six or

:27:00.:27:03.

seven buses and more rural spots. Quite chilly as we start the day for

:27:04.:27:07.

Thursday. Very similar whether through Thursday and Friday. This

:27:08.:27:10.

area of high pressure in control of things. The wind eased off, cloud

:27:11.:27:14.

cover, decent spells of sunshine as we look towards the weekend. Chilly

:27:15.:27:20.

nights but during the afternoon, both Saturday and Sunday, expected

:27:21.:27:25.

to reach 15 or 16 Celsius. Today was cloudy, disappointing with the

:27:26.:27:28.

sunshine but it should be back towards the end of the week and the

:27:29.:27:32.

weekend. It is not looking too bad at all. I

:27:33.:27:37.

will be back at 8pm and 1020 5p with the updates. Have a very good

:27:38.:27:43.

evening. -- 10:25pm. Goodbye.
