Good evening. | 0:01:14 | 0:01:15
Tonight questions have been raised
about whether Sussex police | 0:01:15 | 0:01:17
could have stopped a violent drunk
from murdering a man | 0:01:17 | 0:01:20
in a row over £40. | 0:01:20 | 0:01:23
The force is reviewing its handling
of the case after Duncan Hearsey | 0:01:23 | 0:01:26
was jailed for a minimum of 21 years
for beating Alan Creasey to death | 0:01:26 | 0:01:30
in Lancing last year. | 0:01:30 | 0:01:32
But it has emerged that not only had | 0:01:32 | 0:01:34
Mr Creasey called 999
worried for his safety, | 0:01:34 | 0:01:38
but a pub and a kebab shop
in the town had also called | 0:01:38 | 0:01:41
999 the same evening,
because of Hearsey's aggressive | 0:01:41 | 0:01:43
behaviour. | 0:01:43 | 0:01:44
Sussex Police said it is
"tragically unfortunate" | 0:01:44 | 0:01:46
they failed to catch him. | 0:01:46 | 0:01:47
Piers Hopkirk reports. | 0:01:47 | 0:01:57
Holding his teens, spattered in the
blood from the brutal assault on his | 0:01:57 | 0:02:01
victim, CCTV footage shows a dog
Keirsey walking around his | 0:02:01 | 0:02:04
neighbourhood, at one point stopping
to shadow-box in the street. Just | 0:02:04 | 0:02:09
minutes before he had attacked Alan
Creasey, kicking him to death after | 0:02:09 | 0:02:15
apparently demanding £40 for a
gardening job. It has emerged that | 0:02:15 | 0:02:19
police received a series of calls
that evening from two pubs and | 0:02:19 | 0:02:21
kebabs shop reporting his hostility.
On the night of the fatal attack on | 0:02:21 | 0:02:28
Alan Creasey police were called on
the three separate occasions by | 0:02:28 | 0:02:31
people concerned over Duncan
hearsay's behaviour. Then Creasey | 0:02:31 | 0:02:36
and self called the police. Police
attended but left at 8:30pm to | 0:02:36 | 0:02:44
pursue leads, advising Mr Creasey to
lock the doors. They returned to Mr | 0:02:44 | 0:02:49
Creasey's home at 9:10pm to find him
seriously injured. CCTV shows the | 0:02:49 | 0:02:58
police -- shows how Mr he 's attempt
to carry out his attack. Sussex | 0:02:58 | 0:03:04
Police are holding an investigation
into what happened to examine | 0:03:04 | 0:03:07
whether lessons can be learned. We
need to investigate to see whether | 0:03:07 | 0:03:11
the police have merit in anyway and
as you mention it is a local | 0:03:11 | 0:03:16
investigation and they will be
looking to see if we have done | 0:03:16 | 0:03:20
everything we could and everything
reasonable at the time. Mr Creasey's | 0:03:20 | 0:03:26
neighbours -- Mr Hearsey's
neighbours described him as a | 0:03:26 | 0:03:36
troubled man. He was a man looking
for a fight all the time. The police | 0:03:36 | 0:03:42
were trying to do their job and they
were looking for Duncan. It is sad. | 0:03:42 | 0:03:52
David Simons as a councillor in
short and retired policeman. The | 0:03:52 | 0:03:57
nature of the call and gravity of
the call, if that was seen as a high | 0:03:57 | 0:04:01
priority and it clearly was then
they would look at the time it took | 0:04:01 | 0:04:04
the police to respond and whether
the police could have done anything | 0:04:04 | 0:04:08
more effectively to try and prevent
this in the first place. Hearsey was | 0:04:08 | 0:04:13
based for 21 years for murder,
detectives described it as | 0:04:13 | 0:04:17
tragically unfortunate that he was
not arrested sooner. The force's | 0:04:17 | 0:04:21
professional standards department
will make its own judgment. Peers | 0:04:21 | 0:04:25
joins me in the studio. Why are
Sussex Police carrying out their own | 0:04:25 | 0:04:32
investigation?
This was originally referred to the | 0:04:32 | 0:04:34
Independent Police Complaints
Commission carried it an assessment | 0:04:34 | 0:04:36
of what happened and has determined
does not warrant a full-blown | 0:04:36 | 0:04:40
investigation by them so it is sent
to Sussex Police, you need in | 0:04:40 | 0:04:44
essence to investigate yourselves so
this will be carried out by Sussex's | 0:04:44 | 0:04:50
police and professional standards
department, they will look at what | 0:04:50 | 0:04:52
happened here and determine whether
there are any lessons to be learned. | 0:04:52 | 0:04:56
The pregnant partner
of a mechanic crushed to death | 0:04:56 | 0:04:58
by a car in Kent says she's
heartbroken that she'll have | 0:04:58 | 0:05:00
to raise their unborn
child without him. | 0:05:00 | 0:05:03
22 year old Ashley King died
as he was working at a garage | 0:05:03 | 0:05:06
in Folkestone last week,
both Kent Police and the Health and | 0:05:06 | 0:05:09
Safety Executive are investigating. | 0:05:09 | 0:05:11
Speaking in her first
television interview, | 0:05:11 | 0:05:14
Haley Hancock, who is 5 months
pregnant, says its "been a living | 0:05:14 | 0:05:17
nightmare" since she was told Ashley
had died, a week ago today, | 0:05:17 | 0:05:20
but she has taken some
comfort from fund raising | 0:05:20 | 0:05:22
efforts in his memory. | 0:05:22 | 0:05:23
Leanne Rinne has this
exclusive report. | 0:05:23 | 0:05:30
In just a few months' time Ashley
King would have been celebrating the | 0:05:30 | 0:05:35
birth of his second daughter.
Instead his family say they are | 0:05:35 | 0:05:40
struggling to come to terms with the
fact that he is never coming home. | 0:05:40 | 0:05:45
The whole street was just so dull,
there was no life in it, and you | 0:05:45 | 0:05:49
could tell there had been such a
tragedy for everything to feel so | 0:05:49 | 0:05:54
glum because it dipped, there was no
hash any more and there are now | 0:05:54 | 0:06:01
cheeky messages. -- there is no
Ashley any more. When his daughter | 0:06:01 | 0:06:08
asks about him I can't wait to tell
her that her dad loved her so much, | 0:06:08 | 0:06:14
that he did do as much as he could
and he died trying. Ashley was | 0:06:14 | 0:06:19
working for the DVD automotive
company in the Park farm industrial | 0:06:19 | 0:06:25
estate in Folkestone when the
accident happened last Thursday. | 0:06:25 | 0:06:27
Kent Police say there is currently
no criminal investigation, officers | 0:06:27 | 0:06:32
are preparing a report for the
coroner which will then be passed on | 0:06:32 | 0:06:35
to the Health and Safety Executive
who are also investigating. I have | 0:06:35 | 0:06:40
never been one to do the blame game
or anything like that, it is just | 0:06:40 | 0:06:44
sad that it has happened and we need
to take whatever we can from his | 0:06:44 | 0:06:47
inspiration, just to carry on. He
really tried to get somewhere in | 0:06:47 | 0:06:53
life. He would always brush himself
off carry on. It seems like such a | 0:06:53 | 0:07:01
waste. He went to work that day
thinking he was going to finish and | 0:07:01 | 0:07:04
see his family and he was going to
do all of the normal things. He | 0:07:04 | 0:07:09
wanted to provide for you. Is hard
because I have lost... Was them | 0:07:09 | 0:07:16
doing... Sorry. Tonight one week
after Ashley's death his friends and | 0:07:16 | 0:07:24
family came together at his local
park to let off balloons in his | 0:07:24 | 0:07:29
memory. They say they are determined
to celebrate his life, even though | 0:07:29 | 0:07:33
it was cut to short. | 0:07:33 | 0:07:41
In a moment: how the latest
technology is being made user | 0:07:41 | 0:07:44

Gatwick. | 0:07:46 | 0:07:47
Hundreds of lectures have been
cancelled at the University | 0:07:54 | 0:07:56
of Brighton after hundreds of staff
walked out on strike. | 0:07:56 | 0:07:58
It's part of a dispute over
compulsory redundancies and concerns | 0:07:58 | 0:08:01
about the closure of other campuses
in East Sussex. | 0:08:01 | 0:08:05
Last year the University decided
to close its Hastings campus | 0:08:05 | 0:08:07
at the end of the 2018
to 19 academic year. | 0:08:07 | 0:08:11
Union
officials fear the Eastbourne | 0:08:11 | 0:08:12
campus could also close, | 0:08:12 | 0:08:14
but the university denies this. | 0:08:14 | 0:08:15
Meanwhile 90 staff left
the university in September as part | 0:08:15 | 0:08:18
of an effort to cut the wage bill. | 0:08:18 | 0:08:20
Our Eduction Correspondent
Lauren Moss reports. | 0:08:20 | 0:08:30
Staff before buildings, no
redundancies! Striking to save jobs, | 0:08:31 | 0:08:36
like killers picked up their
placards and joined the picket line, | 0:08:36 | 0:08:39
angry at the risk of two compulsory
redundancies. To compulsory | 0:08:39 | 0:08:44
redundancies is to too many rethink,
university management seems to be | 0:08:44 | 0:08:52
wanting to slim the workforce and we
expect that there might be many more | 0:08:52 | 0:08:55
occasions where we might have to
fight to defend peoples jobs. This | 0:08:55 | 0:09:00
is the latest protest over the
running of the university, last year | 0:09:00 | 0:09:04
there were rockets over the 2019
closure of the Hastings campus. | 0:09:04 | 0:09:09
Since September 90 staff have left
voluntarily and lecturer told me | 0:09:09 | 0:09:12
their workload has increased. They
say if these redundancies go ahead | 0:09:12 | 0:09:16
they fear there could be more
knock-on effect. The rationalisation | 0:09:16 | 0:09:21
of the spread out nature of the site
of the University of Brighton could | 0:09:21 | 0:09:24
mean a serious threat to some of the
outlying areas such as Eastbourne. | 0:09:24 | 0:09:29
85% of the union voted in favour of
strike action which is affecting | 0:09:29 | 0:09:33
students across the University of
Brighton campuses, there were no | 0:09:33 | 0:09:36
lectures this afternoon and there
will be none tomorrow either when a | 0:09:36 | 0:09:39
similar walk-outs takes place. The
university says the strike is not | 0:09:39 | 0:09:43
justified or in the interest of
students. It insists it is working | 0:09:43 | 0:09:47
hard to resolve the situation with
two members of staff. Students were | 0:09:47 | 0:09:51
divided on whether they feel the
action is necessary. I don't think | 0:09:51 | 0:09:55
the strikes should get in the way of
or affect our education. What they | 0:09:55 | 0:10:00
are protesting has nothing to do
with us. It is sad that the | 0:10:00 | 0:10:03
University is not listening, and
students as well, we are here | 0:10:03 | 0:10:08
standing with them in the hope that
the university starts to listen. If | 0:10:08 | 0:10:13
there is not a small inconvenience
now there will be a lot of long-term | 0:10:13 | 0:10:17
inconvenience so it is worthwhile.
With no one backing down the | 0:10:17 | 0:10:20
deadlock is likely to cause more
disruption in the weeks to come. | 0:10:20 | 0:10:23
Lauren is at the University
in Brighton now. | 0:10:23 | 0:10:24
Lauren,
more strike action is planned. | 0:10:24 | 0:10:26
What's the impact going
to be on students? | 0:10:26 | 0:10:34
Another walk-out will take place
here tomorrow, that will affect | 0:10:35 | 0:10:38
hundreds of classes once again and
for -- from Monday staff will | 0:10:38 | 0:10:42
operate a strict works to contract
policy, meaning no more time on | 0:10:42 | 0:10:47
voluntary activities. The union also
claims that student what is called a | 0:10:47 | 0:10:51
slimming down, 5000 word -- a £5,000
research grant has been lost in the | 0:10:51 | 0:10:57
Department for foreign-language as
has also closed but the university | 0:10:57 | 0:11:00
has hit back strongly against some
of the union's claims, accusing them | 0:11:00 | 0:11:05
of deliberately misinforming. No one
from the University was available | 0:11:05 | 0:11:08
for interview but in a statement
they say that despite the union | 0:11:08 | 0:11:11
concerns that are absolutely no
plans in place to close the camp in | 0:11:11 | 0:11:14
Eastbourne. | 0:11:14 | 0:11:15
The Sevenoaks MP
Sir Michael Fallon has spoken | 0:11:15 | 0:11:17
in parliament for the first time
since he resigned from | 0:11:17 | 0:11:20
the Cabinet. | 0:11:20 | 0:11:21
Earlier this month he stood down
as Defence Secretary | 0:11:21 | 0:11:23
over sexual harassment claims,
admitting that his previous | 0:11:23 | 0:11:25
conduct towards women fell
below "acceptable standards". | 0:11:25 | 0:11:29
Speaking during a Commons
debate on the Budget, | 0:11:29 | 0:11:31
he urged fellow his MPs to be more
positive about the UK's | 0:11:31 | 0:11:34
prospects after Brexit. | 0:11:34 | 0:11:41
Brexit Britain demands a bigger
vision. What confident, outward | 0:11:41 | 0:11:49
looking, self watering. Let us build
on this a successful sensible budget | 0:11:49 | 0:11:56
to enable Britain to be older still. | 0:11:56 | 0:11:59
BBC South East has discovered
more than two thousand illegal | 0:11:59 | 0:12:01
immigrants have been arrested
during raids in the region | 0:12:01 | 0:12:04
since 2013. | 0:12:04 | 0:12:05
Teams from Sussex and Kent
have targeted commercial | 0:12:05 | 0:12:07
properties including restaurants,
building sites and hotels | 0:12:07 | 0:12:08
where illegal workers had
been given jobs. | 0:12:08 | 0:12:11
Companies can be fined up
to £20,000 for each person | 0:12:11 | 0:12:14
they illegally employ. | 0:12:14 | 0:12:19
Police have launched
a murder investigation | 0:12:19 | 0:12:20
after the death of a pub
landlord in Folkestone. | 0:12:20 | 0:12:24
58 year-old Joe Daniels was found
with gunshot wounds in the Red Cow | 0:12:24 | 0:12:27
pub in Foord Road yesterday morning. | 0:12:27 | 0:12:31
Well let's
cross to Folkestone, | 0:12:31 | 0:12:32
and speak to our reporter
Brihony Williams who is at | 0:12:32 | 0:12:37
the Red Cow, Brihony,
a gun was found at the property - | 0:12:37 | 0:12:40
and police say they can't yet rule
out any third party involvement, | 0:12:40 | 0:12:43
what's the latest? | 0:12:43 | 0:12:49
There is still a heavy police
presence here and forensics teams | 0:12:49 | 0:12:52
happened working throughout the day
inside the pub and officers are | 0:12:52 | 0:12:56
appealing to any motorist in the
area between 830 at 1130 yesterday | 0:12:56 | 0:13:02
who bite have a dash cam footage,
they say however mundane it might | 0:13:02 | 0:13:06
look, there could be some vital
information, if you have seen | 0:13:06 | 0:13:11
anything that might have went on
here yesterday morning. Behind the | 0:13:11 | 0:13:14
court under a lots of floral
tributes to Joe Daniels. A great man | 0:13:14 | 0:13:20
and horse, we will miss you. I am
heartbroken, I don't know what I'm | 0:13:20 | 0:13:24
going to do without you. And those
that are very much echoed by a | 0:13:24 | 0:13:28
friend, Paul Ives, who I spoke to.
Things like this don't happen in | 0:13:28 | 0:13:33
Folkestone. To happen on your
doorstep to someone who is such a | 0:13:33 | 0:13:36
loved character around the town,
everyone loves them, a lot of people | 0:13:36 | 0:13:39
drink in the pub. And it is just
such a shame, absolutely gutted. | 0:13:39 | 0:13:47
Went back Mr Ives also told me that
Joe Daniels originates from | 0:13:47 | 0:13:51
Liverpool, where he still has a mum
and sister, and they will now be | 0:13:51 | 0:13:56
very anxious to learn the outcome of
the police investigation. | 0:13:56 | 0:14:01
This is our top story tonight: | 0:14:01 | 0:14:06
Sussex Police are to review their
handling of the murder of Alan | 0:14:06 | 0:14:09
Creasey, it emerged that they had
received three separate 989 calls on | 0:14:09 | 0:14:14
the day of the killing morning of
drunken and violent behaviour by his | 0:14:14 | 0:14:18
attacker. The force says it is
tragically unfortunate they failed | 0:14:18 | 0:14:22
to catch on. | 0:14:22 | 0:14:24
Also in tonight's programme: let
the booing and the hissing begin. | 0:14:24 | 0:14:27
The exhibition which celebrates
the enduring popularity | 0:14:27 | 0:14:28
of pantomime. | 0:14:28 | 0:14:37
And after last night strong winds I
have a much quieter but cold coming | 0:14:37 | 0:14:41
up. | 0:14:41 | 0:14:46 | |
Now, if you're visually
impaired new technology can be both | 0:14:46 | 0:14:48
a blessing and a curse. | 0:14:48 | 0:14:50
Many smart phones and tablets
have audio accessibility | 0:14:50 | 0:14:51
features as standard, | 0:14:51 | 0:14:52
but without it, touch screens can
be impossible to use. | 0:14:52 | 0:14:56
Now, many airlines are updating
their in-flight entertainment | 0:14:56 | 0:14:58
to make it available to those
with sight problems. | 0:14:58 | 0:15:00
Today, at their Crawley HQ,
Virgin Atlantic unveiled | 0:15:00 | 0:15:02
a new system they've developed
with the help of the | 0:15:02 | 0:15:04
Guide Dogs Association,
as Sara Smith reports. | 0:15:04 | 0:15:07
Like many airlines, Virgin Atlantic
pride themselves on the in-flight | 0:15:17 | 0:15:19
entertainment. | 0:15:19 | 0:15:21
But when the introduced
touchscreens there was | 0:15:21 | 0:15:23
one group that had
been forgotten about. | 0:15:23 | 0:15:31
Paul Smith from Maidstone can't see
the screen choose options | 0:15:31 | 0:15:33
available and other visual impaired
passengers let the airline now you | 0:15:33 | 0:15:36
weren't happy. | 0:15:36 | 0:15:37
They couldn't even do something
as simple as press the | 0:15:37 | 0:15:40
call button because that is
on the touch-screen, | 0:15:40 | 0:15:44
so we have to go back to basics. | 0:15:45 | 0:15:46
And then we are not experts in this
field so that is why | 0:15:46 | 0:15:52
we worked with Guide
Dogs for the Blind, | 0:15:52 | 0:15:54
because they knew we had
to | 0:15:54 | 0:15:56 | |
engage with people who need to use
it, so we felt what do you want? | 0:15:56 | 0:15:59
Tell us. | 0:15:59 | 0:16:00
Paul was among those who did tell
them and help with the | 0:16:00 | 0:16:03
testing. | 0:16:03 | 0:16:04
The result, a tablet which gives
audio instructions as to how | 0:16:04 | 0:16:07
to navigate the in-flight
entertainment system and plenty of | 0:16:07 | 0:16:09
films with audio descriptions. | 0:16:09 | 0:16:10
They come and put it on your lap,
it will be switched | 0:16:10 | 0:16:13
on and you can listen
to | 0:16:13 | 0:16:14 | |
whatever is on that. | 0:16:14 | 0:16:15
It is that simple and
you just swipe left and | 0:16:15 | 0:16:18
right. | 0:16:18 | 0:16:19
All your life you rely on other
people, but if you can do it | 0:16:19 | 0:16:22
on your own is a great feeling. | 0:16:22 | 0:16:29
tap the screen twice
with one finger to | 0:16:29 | 0:16:31
open this menu. | 0:16:31 | 0:16:32
For the company developing
the technology the aim | 0:16:32 | 0:16:34
was clear,... | 0:16:34 | 0:16:35
Alien covenant. | 0:16:35 | 0:16:38
The real aim was to
get the system that | 0:16:38 | 0:16:40
a passenger who is visually impaired
can come onto the fight, be given | 0:16:40 | 0:16:43
this and be completely
self-sufficient. | 0:16:43 | 0:16:44
It is easy, it means
they have the same, exactly | 0:16:44 | 0:16:47
the same content as everybody else,
so they are treated fairly. | 0:16:47 | 0:16:54
Other airlines are also working
on improving accessibility | 0:16:54 | 0:16:56
for visually impaired passengers. | 0:16:56 | 0:16:57
And in the next year or two
regulation is expected | 0:16:57 | 0:17:00
to ensure all or most on-board can
enjoy the same entertainment. | 0:17:00 | 0:17:09
You may remember
a couple of weeks ago, | 0:17:15 | 0:17:17
we told you about 12 year
old Ryan Brown from Seaford, | 0:17:17 | 0:17:19
who was going off to Bulgaria
to compete in his first | 0:17:19 | 0:17:22
World Trampolining Championships. | 0:17:22 | 0:17:24
Well, now he's back,
and is a double world champion. | 0:17:24 | 0:17:29
He took gold in both the Singles
and Synchronised categories. | 0:17:29 | 0:17:31
In a moment we'll have a chat
with Ryan, and his mum, Alka, | 0:17:31 | 0:17:34
but first let's take a look
at Ryan in bouncing action. | 0:17:34 | 0:17:43
He is with us now. How does it feel
to be 00 champion. It feels good | 0:18:30 | 0:18:37
knowing the hard work all paid off
now and I look forward to next | 0:18:37 | 0:18:41
season. You got back from Bulgaria
on Monday I think, went to school on | 0:18:41 | 0:18:47
Tuesday? I went to school and to
stay. Had he been shouting about it | 0:18:47 | 0:18:52
in school? I told some people in the
future is not voted it and they said | 0:18:52 | 0:18:55
well done. It feels good that they
were supportive. Fantastic. Had you | 0:18:55 | 0:19:00
get involved in travelling in the
first place? I decided during a | 0:19:00 | 0:19:03
session at the leisure centre and I
had a goal and from then I just | 0:19:03 | 0:19:08
loved it and carried on with it. Did
you ever imagine you would be a | 0:19:08 | 0:19:12
double world champion? Now, I was
just doing it for fun. Then I went | 0:19:12 | 0:19:20
into it quite seriously. It is quite
serious! Holger medals up. You are | 0:19:20 | 0:19:26
in Bulgaria to Wendy's medals.
Wattel area like? It is all right | 0:19:26 | 0:19:31
there. We did not really look around
because we were in the arena most of | 0:19:31 | 0:19:36
the time with everyone else. You had
a serious job to do, conquering the | 0:19:36 | 0:19:41
world and troubling cams! And I know
Alka your mum was with you. How did | 0:19:41 | 0:19:48
you feel? It was very emotional when
he was competing at when he had one | 0:19:48 | 0:19:52
we've ever floods of tears. We were
overjoyed at what he has achieved. | 0:19:52 | 0:19:56
Extraordinary. When did you know he
had something a bit special? | 0:19:56 | 0:20:03
Probably about three or four years
ago when he started winning national | 0:20:03 | 0:20:07
competitions and was getting better
and better and the moves are getting | 0:20:07 | 0:20:10
better and I thought this is
something special he is doing and he | 0:20:10 | 0:20:13
could go far. We saw in going down
the front, and in the light fittings | 0:20:13 | 0:20:17
have lost in the years? Fortunately
none! You must have broken something | 0:20:17 | 0:20:23
bouncing around the house? I brought
a plant pot thing. Quite did she | 0:20:23 | 0:20:30
tell you offer say it's OK your
world champion? Element she told me. | 0:20:30 | 0:20:35
What happens next? The Olympics in
Tokyo where in 2020 and you will be | 0:20:35 | 0:20:41
15 then? Tom Daley went to Beijing
when he was 13. What do you reckon? | 0:20:41 | 0:20:47
I am hoping for LA or the Palace
one. 2020 2028. You have Olympic | 0:20:47 | 0:20:56
ambitions. Will you talk to us when
you are in the next question mark | 0:20:56 | 0:21:01
yes. | 0:21:01 | 0:21:03 | |
Sussex cricketer James Vince
top scored for England on day one | 0:21:03 | 0:21:05
of the first Ashes Test in Brisbane. | 0:21:05 | 0:21:07
The 26 year old, | 0:21:07 | 0:21:14
who was born in Cuckfield,
made 83 before being run out | 0:21:14 | 0:21:16
by Nathan Lyon's superb direct hit. | 0:21:16 | 0:21:18
England, the Ashes holders,
closed a rain affected | 0:21:18 | 0:21:20
day one on 196 for 4. | 0:21:20 | 0:21:24
I felt reasonably calm considering
the occasion and it was my first | 0:21:24 | 0:21:28
night in Test cricket for a little
while so like I said I try to enjoy | 0:21:28 | 0:21:32
it as much as anything and maintain
focus out there, try and enjoy the | 0:21:32 | 0:21:36
occasion of playing in a national
Test match, without letting it get | 0:21:36 | 0:21:40
on top of me. I thought I got the
balance right today. | 0:21:40 | 0:21:45
England's women's hockey team,
featuring six players | 0:21:45 | 0:21:46
from Kent and Sussex,
are through to the semi-finals | 0:21:46 | 0:21:48
of the Hockey World
League in New Zealand. | 0:21:48 | 0:21:50
Two goals
from former East Grinstead forward | 0:21:50 | 0:21:52
Sophie Bray sealed a 2-1 victory | 0:21:52 | 0:21:53
over the United States
in this morning's quarterfinal. | 0:21:53 | 0:21:55
The team will face hosts New Zealand
in tomorrow morning's semi. | 0:21:55 | 0:22:04
Christmas isn't too far away now, | 0:22:04 | 0:22:05
and that means our theatres
will soon all be filled | 0:22:05 | 0:22:08
with pantomime. | 0:22:08 | 0:22:09
Will know they won't! Or yes the
world. | 0:22:09 | 0:22:11
With its regular ingredients
of a Dame played by a man, | 0:22:11 | 0:22:14
and a principal boy played
by a woman, and plenty | 0:22:14 | 0:22:16
of slapstick comedy,
it is a quintessentially British | 0:22:16 | 0:22:18
theatrical form, except, actually,
its not, it grew out | 0:22:18 | 0:22:20
of Italian Street Theatre known
as "comedia dell arte" | 0:22:20 | 0:22:22
in the 16th Century. | 0:22:22 | 0:22:23
It IS hugely popular though,last
year almost 3 million people | 0:22:23 | 0:22:26
went to see a pantomime. | 0:22:26 | 0:22:27
and they generated
£60 million for box | 0:22:27 | 0:22:29
offices around the country. | 0:22:29 | 0:22:30
This weekend an exhibition
celebrating all things panto | 0:22:30 | 0:22:32
opens in Canterbury,
our reporter Charlotte Wright joins | 0:22:32 | 0:22:33
us from a panto dress rehearsal. | 0:22:33 | 0:22:35
They're behind you, Charlotte! | 0:22:35 | 0:22:45
That's right, they most certainly
are. That is the cast and crew of | 0:22:48 | 0:22:53
Peter Pan, Bisley rehearsing ahead
of their opening night tomorrow. It | 0:22:53 | 0:22:55
just goes to show we really are in
the festive season. This production | 0:22:55 | 0:23:00
is just one of those that have taken
part in the exhibition just down the | 0:23:00 | 0:23:03
road. | 0:23:03 | 0:23:11 | |
It is a staple of the festive
season. Enjoyed by audiences for | 0:23:11 | 0:23:17
decades. Now a new exhibition opens
in Canterbury, celebrating the long | 0:23:17 | 0:23:22
history of the pantomime. We have a
wonderful range of posters going | 0:23:22 | 0:23:27
back to the origins of panto as we
know it and they have a 19th | 0:23:27 | 0:23:30
century. The one that stands out is
Augustus Harris, the father of panto | 0:23:30 | 0:23:36
as we know it. It is one of the
largest collections of pantomime | 0:23:36 | 0:23:39
related material in the UK. We have
wonderful costumes from a recent | 0:23:39 | 0:23:45
production of Aladdin and behind
that on the washing line you have | 0:23:45 | 0:23:47
some wonderful designs for a late
Victorian production of Aladdin, and | 0:23:47 | 0:23:54
what strikes me about these is
actually how similar they are and if | 0:23:54 | 0:23:57
you think of panto the design, the
look of panto is very much rooted in | 0:23:57 | 0:24:01
its history, in that wonderful
contexts. The exhibition has been | 0:24:01 | 0:24:07
developed in partnership with the
University of Kent special | 0:24:07 | 0:24:09
collections and archives department.
They have a fantastic collection in | 0:24:09 | 0:24:14
their special collections and
archives of pantomime material but | 0:24:14 | 0:24:17
there will also be a very family
friendly elements are there are lots | 0:24:17 | 0:24:21
of activities for Children and
Families Bill do together. This | 0:24:21 | 0:24:25
exhibition is packed with costumes
props and posters across the decades | 0:24:25 | 0:24:29
and across the country and a little
closer to home. | 0:24:29 | 0:24:33
It can't be over? I poisoned you!
The lodge coincides with the opening | 0:24:33 | 0:24:42
of Peter Pan at the mile of theatre
down the road. It is like being in a | 0:24:42 | 0:24:47
club that British audiences know the
pantomime, we all now, we have been | 0:24:47 | 0:24:51
going since children and we know
what to do when we come here. And | 0:24:51 | 0:24:55
that makes us feel good, like it is
her own. This production is one of | 0:24:55 | 0:25:00
many to contribute to the
exhibition, carefully curated to | 0:25:00 | 0:25:04
give a snapshot of what is an
institutional British culture. | 0:25:04 | 0:25:11
It does not look like the appeal of
pantomime will wane any time soon, | 0:25:11 | 0:25:15
this production is expected to sell
100,000 tickets. That is one quarter | 0:25:15 | 0:25:20
of the annual ticket sales. It
shouldn't be too difficult to get a | 0:25:20 | 0:25:24
hold of a ticket either because
they're made to the performances in | 0:25:24 | 0:25:27
this run. Send exhausting.
And a dozen people that is amazing. | 0:25:27 | 0:25:33
Let's find out what the weather will
be like for the past few days. | 0:25:33 | 0:25:36
Let's find out what the weather will
be like for the past few days. It is | 0:25:36 | 0:25:41
going to be getting colder. It was
pretty noisy last night with our | 0:25:41 | 0:25:45
strong winds but through the
day-to-day they fell in the -- and | 0:25:45 | 0:25:52
bottom sunshine. The seat up in
stormy on the coastline and no | 0:25:52 | 0:25:57
surprises, Julie, because the night
we went costing close to 60 miles an | 0:25:57 | 0:26:01
hour crossed over, even inland we
were at 45 miles an hour. As we work | 0:26:01 | 0:26:07
through to tomorrow's whether we are
not going to have any problems with | 0:26:07 | 0:26:09
the win but it will be cold with
temperatures struggling. A little | 0:26:09 | 0:26:13
bit of rain to content with and we
start to see the rain arriving in | 0:26:13 | 0:26:17
the LA hours, turning pretty wet.
The heaviest of the rain moving | 0:26:17 | 0:26:21
along the coast. It will start to
ease in the early hours at | 0:26:21 | 0:26:24
temperature starting the day at
around 5-60 days. Much cooler than | 0:26:24 | 0:26:28
it has been over recent days but the
early rain clears away. The bitter | 0:26:28 | 0:26:33
brightness for the time but then a
bit of cloud will increase to the | 0:26:33 | 0:26:35
afternoon and we are looking at a
scattering of showers, temperatures | 0:26:35 | 0:26:39
than struggling just seven or eight
so well down on recent days. We're | 0:26:39 | 0:26:44
looking at a frosty start on
Saturday, with temperatures hovering | 0:26:44 | 0:26:47
around freezing. Despite it being
cold beer and expecting plenty of | 0:26:47 | 0:26:53
sunshine. Things brightening up
nicely through the day on Saturday, | 0:26:53 | 0:26:57
we have fairly light winds as well.
Throughout much of this week we have | 0:26:57 | 0:27:01
been having those daytime
temperatures at 13 or 14 degrees. | 0:27:01 | 0:27:05
Saturday might come as a shock
because I have highs for year of | 0:27:05 | 0:27:09
just five or six. Sunday will be a
very similar theme that will start | 0:27:09 | 0:27:12
off with an LA frost, but it will be
mainly dry and bright with some | 0:27:12 | 0:27:17
sunshine and in the afternoon
temperatures still at around five or | 0:27:17 | 0:27:20
6 degrees. We have rain to come
through the night, things being | 0:27:20 | 0:27:26
cloudy or Friday with the odd shower
or two. We can sunshine but we will | 0:27:26 | 0:27:30
need to wrap up warm the visit will
feel pretty chilly. | 0:27:30 | 0:27:34
I suppose it is getting towards
winter, we can't argue! At least it | 0:27:34 | 0:27:39
will be sunny. I am back at eight
and after the national news. | 0:27:39 | 0:27:43
Goodbye. | 0:27:43 | 0:27:45 |
