Today's main headlines in the south-east: We learn of plans | :00:07. | :00:08.
for a huge expansion of the Port of Ramsgate - | :00:09. | :00:11.
tonight residents have reacted with shock. | :00:12. | :00:14.
We're live in the town where the secret proposals | :00:15. | :00:16.
A Sussex teenager's fears for his future after his | :00:17. | :00:21.
"life altering operation" was cancelled at the last mhnute. | :00:22. | :00:31.
It is another foggy starts tomorrow but brightening up and stayhng dry. | :00:32. | :00:42.
BBC South East has learned of multi-million pound development | :00:43. | :00:48.
plans to dramatically transform the Port of Ramsgate, | :00:49. | :00:50.
with a bid for ?4 million of Government of money | :00:51. | :00:59.
to be coupled with ?2 million from Thanet District council. | :01:00. | :01:01.
The development would potentially double the number of lorries able | :01:02. | :01:04.
It has provoked an angry re`ction from some. It is quite | :01:05. | :01:17.
extraordinary. We have a colmunity who wants to develop the totrist | :01:18. | :01:22.
-based economy and now we h`ve the Council wanting to industri`lise its | :01:23. | :01:29.
and allow up to 1 million HGV vehicles to be here. The two cannot | :01:30. | :01:36.
work together. That was filmed at a meeting in | :01:37. | :01:40.
Ramsgate tonight. Hundreds of local residents heard of the plans for the | :01:41. | :01:42.
first time. Our reporter Leanne Rine | :01:43. | :01:44.
was at the meeting and joins me now. And this has caused some shock, | :01:45. | :01:46.
Leanne. That's right. The meeting fhnished | :01:47. | :01:55.
around 40 minutes ago and initially hundreds of residents gathered to | :01:56. | :01:59.
raise concerns about plans to increase concrete production at the | :02:00. | :02:04.
port and then they heard about plans to potentially increased frdight | :02:05. | :02:06.
operations and also build a new operations and also build a new | :02:07. | :02:10.
logistics hub at the airport. There were gasps from people and lany | :02:11. | :02:14.
raise concerns about the environmental impact this whll have | :02:15. | :02:20.
on the area. We are shocked that our very tiny port might be overwhelmed | :02:21. | :02:24.
with huge numbers of lorries going through a small town steeped in | :02:25. | :02:33.
history and tradition. Terrhfying, to be honest. That Ramsgate will | :02:34. | :02:38.
change in such a horrible w`y. We understand Thanet District | :02:39. | :02:41.
Council applied for Governmdnt funding at the start of the year | :02:42. | :02:45.
which was unsuccessful and we believe they will apply agahn next | :02:46. | :02:50.
year. We have heard from residents they are very angry about this and | :02:51. | :02:55.
also heard from local MP Cr`ig Mackinlay who told me she whll fight | :02:56. | :03:00.
these plans and does not want to see Ramsgate industrialised. | :03:01. | :03:02.
More than 2700 lorries have been caught parking in unsafe or illegal | :03:03. | :03:06.
locations in Kent over the past year. | :03:07. | :03:08.
The HGVs were all either moved on, fined or immobilised. | :03:09. | :03:13.
Kent Police and Highways England have been working together to target | :03:14. | :03:16.
lorries parked on lay-bys, hard shoulders and | :03:17. | :03:21.
A Labour activist from Kent, who was suspended from the party | :03:22. | :03:33.
after comments she made about anti-semitism | :03:34. | :03:35.
and Holocaust Memorial Day, is calling for public help to raise | :03:36. | :03:37.
money for legal action against Labour's general secretary. | :03:38. | :03:39.
Jackie Walker's trying to r`ise ten thousand pounds | :03:40. | :03:41.
Plans for a multi-million pound scheme to improve the A27 | :03:42. | :03:48.
between Lewes and Polegate are to be revealed. | :03:49. | :03:50.
Highways England has earmarked ?75 million to upgrade | :03:51. | :03:53.
It's seeking the public's vhews during a series of meetings starting | :03:54. | :03:58.
Bulldozers have today been flattening what remains | :03:59. | :04:08.
of the migrant camp in Calahs, known as the jungle. | :04:09. | :04:11.
Charities say dozens of people, including children, remain | :04:12. | :04:13.
at the site where they're reportedly facing a night | :04:14. | :04:18.
This despite the authorities declaring the closure a success | :04:19. | :04:23.
BBC South East Today's Peter Whittlesea has spent the wedk | :04:24. | :04:30.
This is his report on the operation to clear | :04:31. | :04:34.
the jungle, which has long been a staging post for migrants | :04:35. | :04:37.
With the Jungle largely destroyed migrants woke up on the pavdment | :04:38. | :04:42.
outside the camp prompting charities to question the French authority's | :04:43. | :04:45.
claims that everyone, including children, had | :04:46. | :04:52.
From last night there were 000 children unaccounted | :04:53. | :04:55.
for and with nowhere to sleep and they were not | :04:56. | :04:57.
being allowed into the | :04:58. | :04:58.
warehouse where the registration was happening. | :04:59. | :05:00.
30 of them accounted for and this is the biggest problem. | :05:01. | :05:04.
70 of them are in the wind, we do not know where | :05:05. | :05:07.
This morning migrants had rdturned to the camp despite the French | :05:08. | :05:10.
authorities claiming everyone had been processed and the oper`tion | :05:11. | :05:14.
We do not want the registration process we had here to | :05:15. | :05:19.
Our mission to offer shelter to all the migrants in the camp has | :05:20. | :05:24.
Yesterday it was only possible to clear the majority of | :05:25. | :05:30.
Cameraman Andrew Marshall and I were in the camp | :05:31. | :05:36.
There was no choice but to leave, and quickly. | :05:37. | :05:41.
Reduced to ashes in little lore than an hour, the only placd | :05:42. | :05:44.
You can see how quickly the fire has spread. | :05:45. | :05:50.
Cutting through the roar of the fire, | :05:51. | :06:02.
As the flames spread only the possesions | :06:03. | :06:14.
I witnessed migrants setting shelters on fire, an act of defiance | :06:15. | :06:18.
after the camp's closure became inevitable. | :06:19. | :06:21.
Over here there are about 20 fires | :06:22. | :06:23.
This one is smouldering and it is smoking heavily. | :06:24. | :06:28.
More fires over there and the French Fire | :06:29. | :06:34.
Brigade are trying to put a fire out, you can see | :06:35. | :06:36.
This is in the heart of the jungle, the Fire Brigade are | :06:37. | :06:45.
trying to put those fires ott and tell us to go out. | :06:46. | :06:48.
Over here the caravans are on fire and down this | :06:49. | :06:52.
street here there are many buildings also burned down. | :06:53. | :06:54.
Migrants were helpless to intervene but thankful | :06:55. | :06:56.
A teenager from Sussex who had a "life altering operation" | :06:57. | :07:08.
cancelled by the NHS at the last minute has been told he has just | :07:09. | :07:12.
four weeks to have the procddure or face giving up his fledghng | :07:13. | :07:17.
17-year-old Jamie Kaye was due to have an operation to help | :07:18. | :07:21.
But new NHS guidance means it now can't go ahead. | :07:22. | :07:26.
His family who live in East Grinstead say it's ` race | :07:27. | :07:29.
against time to find someond to perform the operation. | :07:30. | :07:32.
Jamie Kaye had been preparing for his opposition to helpless curvature | :07:33. | :07:51.
of the spying for months. The rib cage sticks out a bit. You can see | :07:52. | :07:57.
my rib cage pokes out. To ptt education on hold and made sure he | :07:58. | :08:01.
was doing all the right exercises only to be told a few weeks | :08:02. | :08:06.
beforehand it was not going ahead. Disbelieve is the only thing I could | :08:07. | :08:10.
think of when I found out it had been cancelled, I did not bdlieve | :08:11. | :08:15.
it. The NHS saves was cancelled because they do not fund th`t | :08:16. | :08:18.
particular procedure any more but because of his age doctors say if he | :08:19. | :08:26.
wanted privately it must be done within weeks, before he stopped | :08:27. | :08:29.
growing. He was put in to h`ve a procedure where screws are `ttached | :08:30. | :08:33.
and a flexible cord joins the screws and it can then the tension to help | :08:34. | :08:38.
straighten the spine and allows for continued growth and increased | :08:39. | :08:43.
mobility. What Jamie was put instead or spinal fusion were screws are up | :08:44. | :08:48.
at the metal rods and a bond graft is permanently joining the vertebrae | :08:49. | :08:52.
so there is no movement between them. His parents what to do is over | :08:53. | :08:59.
?100,000 to take to New York to have the operation he needs to c`rry on | :09:00. | :09:07.
doing the things he loves lhke gymnastics and dance. He has been so | :09:08. | :09:09.
focused since seven years old outperforming us what he wants to do | :09:10. | :09:16.
and we cannot fail. Devastated the NHS told us the only option in the | :09:17. | :09:21.
UK is a spinal rods and of course Jimmy is a dancer and Acrob`t and | :09:22. | :09:25.
that would cause him to losd a flexibility sought it is not a | :09:26. | :09:34.
suitable option for him. With exercise something you can | :09:35. | :09:39.
strengthen the spine but in Jimmy's case he already has a severd curve. | :09:40. | :09:45.
He is getting quite a bit of pain. In pain and desperate to rahse | :09:46. | :09:50.
enough money. If I wait unthl the NHS fund it it will be too late For | :09:51. | :09:57.
Jamie and his family the clock is ticking. | :09:58. | :09:58.
That's it from me, we'll have the national weather | :09:59. | :10:00.
in a moment, but first here's the forecast | :10:01. | :10:02.
It was a foggy start to datd but it brightens up the afternoon `nd | :10:03. | :10:18.
giving my older. But filling my older. Much the same tomorrow, a | :10:19. | :10:23.
misty and foggy stuff and brightening up in the afternoon | :10:24. | :10:28.
Tonight, clearer skies, somd low cloud and where we see clear skies | :10:29. | :10:33.
and light winds and mist and fog starting tomorrow. Overnight | :10:34. | :10:38.
temperatures of 10 Celsius. A cool start tomorrow and this are` of high | :10:39. | :10:42.
pressure stays with us throtgh tomorrow and the weekend and beyond. | :10:43. | :10:49.
Tomorrow, initially misty and murky and by the afternoon brightdns up a | :10:50. | :10:54.
bit light winds and south-wdsterly direction of top temperaturds by the | :10:55. | :11:00.
afternoon of 16 Celsius. More of the same to the weekend. | :11:01. | :11:01.
fine and dry and on the mild side. My colleague Helen Willetts has with | :11:02. | :11:04.
the national picture. Good evening. The dry October | :11:05. | :11:13.
weather is set to continue into the weekend. It's been kind if you've | :11:14. | :11:17.
been on half term. Not that I'm promising this sort of weather for | :11:18. | :11:22.
all. Isn't it lovely, taken on the Isle of Wight. Our top temperature | :11:23. | :11:26.
was 17 Celsius, not too far away. What a lovely and to the date here | :11:27. | :11:31.
at Mansfield Woodhouse. We have had some sunshine and warmth. It is set | :11:32. | :11:36.
to continue, but the fly in the ointment is a weakening weather | :11:37. | :11:40.
friend. It's edging southwards. To the south we are seeing patchy mist | :11:41. | :11:46.
and dense fog, around potentially for the morning. Not | :11:47. | :11:47. |
