Today's main headlines in the south-east: | :00:00. | :00:00.
An MP calls for a change in the law, after we reveal how vulnerable | :00:00. | :00:08.
young people are taking rent-free accomodation in return for sex. | :00:09. | :00:13.
I was under quite a bit of pressure to keep him happy. | :00:14. | :00:18.
Because if they are not happy with you, then | :00:19. | :00:20.
The danger on our beaches - why campaigners say | :00:21. | :00:26.
washed-up rubbish is becoming more serious than ever. | :00:27. | :00:29.
And it's been another dry, bright day with sunshine, | :00:30. | :00:32.
There's been a call tonight from one of our MPs for a change in the law, | :00:33. | :00:52.
after we revealed how vulnerable young people in the south-east | :00:53. | :00:54.
are putting themselves at risk by taking rent-free accomodation | :00:55. | :00:58.
Landlords are placing adverts on websites like Craigslist | :00:59. | :01:02.
They don't break the law, because no money changes hands. | :01:03. | :01:08.
Our reporter Lauren Moss spoke to a student in Brighton | :01:09. | :01:10.
who was fleeing an abusive home life, and says she felt she had | :01:11. | :01:13.
no choice but to accept an offer of sex for rent. | :01:14. | :01:20.
I had no idea what I was getting into. | :01:21. | :01:24.
He took me into to his living room, got me drinks, and then after that, | :01:25. | :01:29.
it was straight upstairs and go for it. | :01:30. | :01:32.
Vulnerable and desperate for a roof over her head, | :01:33. | :01:36.
Gemma answered a sex-for-rent online advert. | :01:37. | :01:42.
He would do what he wanted to do, forcefully. | :01:43. | :01:47.
And I just sort of, yeah, went along with it. | :01:48. | :01:52.
I started feeling physically unwell. | :01:53. | :01:57.
These are some of the offers we found openly placed | :01:58. | :01:59.
Free accommodation, but with strings attached. | :02:00. | :02:06.
I was thinking once a week, something like that, | :02:07. | :02:08.
but I'm happy as long as there is sex involved. | :02:09. | :02:12.
I spoke with six men posting adverts in the south-east. | :02:13. | :02:15.
All wanted photos of me before they would talk on the phone. | :02:16. | :02:19.
All were clear how the arrangement would work. | :02:20. | :02:22.
These are real conversations, voiced by actors. | :02:23. | :02:25.
Well, you know, you agree sort of like, a couple times a week? | :02:26. | :02:30.
But as far as the apartment's concerned, | :02:31. | :02:34.
it's like completely as if we are flatmates. | :02:35. | :02:36.
There's a girl staying here now who has done the same. | :02:37. | :02:42.
Two or three times a week, basically. | :02:43. | :02:43.
But some say those agreeing to these deals | :02:44. | :02:48.
could be getting into a very dangerous situation. | :02:49. | :02:52.
Where people are in really desperate, vulnerable | :02:53. | :02:55.
situations in terms of housing and financial need, it could lead | :02:56. | :02:59.
to someone feeling trapped and being a prisoner somewhere | :03:00. | :03:02.
In just one day, I counted well over 100 adverts on | :03:03. | :03:09.
Craigslist offering free accommodation in exchange for | :03:10. | :03:12.
In Maidstone, one man was asking for a | :03:13. | :03:16.
woman to move in with him and pretend to be his girlfriend. | :03:17. | :03:19.
Another, in Rochester, a double room in exchange | :03:20. | :03:22.
In Brighton, one advert was specifically aimed at young men. | :03:23. | :03:30.
And, disturbingly, this is perfectly legal. | :03:31. | :03:33.
I think these adverts go as close to the edge of the law | :03:34. | :03:36.
as they possibly can without breaking the law. | :03:37. | :03:39.
They would argue that they have chosen, | :03:40. | :03:41.
voluntarily, to enter that situation. | :03:42. | :03:43.
The trouble is, when you have a vulnerable person, that can | :03:44. | :03:48.
then becomes exploited, the concept of choice soon disappears. | :03:49. | :03:54.
One third of young homeless people in the south-east say they have | :03:55. | :03:57.
spent the night with a stranger just to get off the streets. | :03:58. | :04:02.
It really is very troubling to hear that people | :04:03. | :04:04.
are out there preying on these vulnerable young people. | :04:05. | :04:09.
Do you think there should be a law brought in | :04:10. | :04:12.
If maybe we start with the advertisers to say, | :04:13. | :04:15.
is there a voluntary code you could abide by, to take | :04:16. | :04:18.
Maybe if they aren't willing to do this, then maybe MPs | :04:19. | :04:22.
will want to look into the issue in the House of Commons. | :04:23. | :04:30.
There are particularly young people who are being exploited because they | :04:31. | :04:34.
are vulnerable. There is an added bonus on the platforms of to reach | :04:35. | :04:41.
this out and deal with it. I'm being explicit because if they don't deal | :04:42. | :04:44.
with this and accept the responsible to come I will push legislation to | :04:45. | :04:45.
do it for them. I contacted Craigslist | :04:46. | :04:48.
for comment, but they More adverts are | :04:49. | :04:49.
appearing every day. They could basically just | :04:50. | :04:58.
come over to you and and you really don't have much | :04:59. | :05:00.
of a choice, because you know it is their home and you want | :05:01. | :05:04.
to just keep that place. With an increasing number of young, | :05:05. | :05:07.
homeless people, it is feared that these adverts will only | :05:08. | :05:10.
continue to exploit Well, I'm joined now | :05:11. | :05:11.
in the studio by Lauren, Throughout the day, the Home Office | :05:12. | :05:24.
answers please happened responding? Yes, the Home Office responded | :05:25. | :05:28.
tonight. They say, nobody should feel obliged to have sex with anyone | :05:29. | :05:30.
other than by choice. Sussex Police other than by choice. Sussex Police | :05:31. | :05:34.
are also getting. They are urging anyone who thinks they might have | :05:35. | :05:37.
been a victim of sexual exploitation to contact them. Charities are | :05:38. | :05:41.
warning that agreeing to these sorts of arrangements can have serious, | :05:42. | :05:44.
damaging effect on mental health. Postmaster stress disorder and | :05:45. | :05:49.
depression. This focuses on the issue of consent and choice, and the | :05:50. | :05:52.
power imbalance between a mumbled and the fear of losing your home if | :05:53. | :05:57.
you don't keep your end of the bargain. -- power imbalance between | :05:58. | :05:58.
a landlord Andy Tennant. The problem of plastic | :05:59. | :06:05.
waste on our beaches is becoming worse than ever, | :06:06. | :06:07.
according to campaigners. Cuckmere Haven in East Sussex has | :06:08. | :06:09.
been particulary badly hit, as our Environment Correspondent, | :06:10. | :06:11.
Yvette Austin, discovered From bags and bottles to tiny | :06:12. | :06:13.
broken pieces, littering one of the region's most famous | :06:14. | :06:18.
beauty spots, Cuckmere Haven. A high tide has dumped | :06:19. | :06:21.
an enormous amount of small, Really quite nasty things, that | :06:22. | :06:23.
if they get into animals and fish, It constantly goes | :06:24. | :06:30.
through my mind, Or, the other thing I think is that | :06:31. | :06:36.
everything I pick up is a piece that isn't going | :06:37. | :06:44.
to get inside a creature. Plastic waste is a global problem, | :06:45. | :06:48.
and when it does get into creatures, | :06:49. | :06:51.
very few can be saved. This albatross chick | :06:52. | :06:55.
in the Pacific was lucky. All this plastic rubbish | :06:56. | :06:59.
was picked up here by half a dozen people in about | :07:00. | :07:01.
half an hour. It's thought 8 million | :07:02. | :07:04.
tonnes of plastic enters with an estimated 46,000 pieces | :07:05. | :07:07.
of plastic litter per square mile. And a single plastic | :07:08. | :07:15.
bottle can take more It's particularly bad | :07:16. | :07:16.
here because of the way it's trapped in this | :07:17. | :07:22.
sort of river mouth. But it doesn't go anywhere, | :07:23. | :07:26.
it just gets smaller, and It's a very important spawning | :07:27. | :07:29.
and nursery ground for a lot of fish, lobsters, and rare species | :07:30. | :07:33.
like blue mussels and So lots of plastic | :07:34. | :07:35.
litter will obviously be having an impact on those delicate | :07:36. | :07:40.
and rare, It's a global threat that | :07:41. | :07:42.
will last for generations. On the eve of Good Friday, | :07:43. | :07:51.
the Archbishop of Canterbury, Justin Welby, has said | :07:52. | :07:53.
that we musn't let terrorists chain us with, as he put it, | :07:54. | :07:56.
"a desire for revenge". The Archbishop also addressed | :07:57. | :08:00.
whether it were possible to forgive Khalid Masood, | :08:01. | :08:03.
who grew up in Kent and Sussex, and went on to kill five people | :08:04. | :08:06.
in the terrorist attack The terrorists succeed | :08:07. | :08:08.
when they chain us with fear, with hatred and with | :08:09. | :08:14.
a desire for revenge. But pastorally, you don't go up | :08:15. | :08:18.
to someone who has just lost someone they loved or has been | :08:19. | :08:25.
terribly injured, and say, "No, you're going to do | :08:26. | :08:29.
the forgiveness stuff." You stand alongside | :08:30. | :08:31.
them, you share their grief, Our reporter Briohny Williams | :08:32. | :08:35.
is at Canterbury Cathedral now. Briohny, the Archbishop spoke | :08:36. | :08:44.
about the way that different faiths Yes, John. He said just a couple of | :08:45. | :09:01.
days afterwards he met with leaders of different faiths to stand against | :09:02. | :09:04.
extremism and safety people that they really need to be the glue that | :09:05. | :09:09.
holds society together. He also took the opportunity to reiterate the | :09:10. | :09:12.
church's stance to abuse allegations. | :09:13. | :09:14.
But I do know that we are profoundly aware of the danger now, | :09:15. | :09:17.
and we are very, very tough with anyone | :09:18. | :09:20.
who steps over the line and will go on being so. | :09:21. | :09:22.
And we are stepping up our approach continually. | :09:23. | :09:30.
Most of his message was about help and unity this Easter. -- hope and | :09:31. | :09:41.
unity. There is a good going on, just one of many services that will | :09:42. | :09:42.
take place this weekend. We'll have the national weather | :09:43. | :09:47.
forecast in a moment, but first, let's get | :09:48. | :09:50.
the weather here. And a lovely morning today, | :09:51. | :09:52.
and a treat for steam train fans? Yes, we were lucky enough to have | :09:53. | :10:03.
the Flying Scotsman. Temperatures around 13 degrees at Sheffield Park. | :10:04. | :10:08.
Blue skies and it remained dry, editors there for another six days. | :10:09. | :10:12.
So lovely weather to catch this stunning site. Going to tonight, | :10:13. | :10:17.
looking pretty cloudy at times, temperatures will drop to six or 7 | :10:18. | :10:22.
degrees. But we will see some clear spells to give some brighter spells. | :10:23. | :10:27.
But there is a weak front looking around and it may introduce some | :10:28. | :10:30.
more clout throughout the afternoon. But I am still hopeful we'll keep | :10:31. | :10:34.
some breaks in the cloud. A bit more clear skies, and it should lead to | :10:35. | :10:41.
13 or 14 degrees. A little cooler where it is cloudy, at 11 or 12. | :10:42. | :10:49.
Patchy rain to Friday night and Saturday morning, but it should | :10:50. | :10:54.
clearly, so by Saturday afternoon, a called north-westerly breeze but | :10:55. | :10:56.
much drier and brighter and temperatures around 11 to 12 | :10:57. | :10:57.
degrees. We will keep you updated. Now with | :10:58. | :11:04.
the National Outlook, Tomasz Schafernaker. | :11:05. | :11:09.
Good evening. It's not exactly cracking whether | :11:10. | :11:10. |
