When his daughter asked | 0:00:00 | 0:00:08
about him, he would have loved her
so much. And going to be becoming | 0:00:09 | 0:00:13
colder for the weekend. | 0:00:13 | 0:00:19
Good evening. | 0:00:19 | 0:00:20
Questions have been raised
about whether Sussex Police | 0:00:20 | 0:00:22
could have stopped a violent drunk
from murdering a man | 0:00:22 | 0:00:24
in a row over £40. | 0:00:25 | 0:00:27
The force is reviewing its handling
of the case after Duncan Hearsey | 0:00:27 | 0:00:30
from Shoreham was jailed
for a minimum of 21 years | 0:00:30 | 0:00:40
Holding his jeans, with blood from
the victim, CCTV footage shows | 0:00:50 | 0:00:54
Duncan Hearsey walking around, at
one point stopping to shadow-box. | 0:00:54 | 0:01:01
Just minutes before, he had attacked
Alan Creasey. Kicking him to death. | 0:01:01 | 0:01:07
That was after apparently demanding
£40 for gardening. Police had | 0:01:07 | 0:01:11
received a series of telephone calls
from two pubs and Aqaba job, | 0:01:11 | 0:01:18
reporting his facility. Police
initially called on three separate | 0:01:18 | 0:01:21
occasions, by people concerned over
Duncan Hearsey. Then, Alan Creasey | 0:01:21 | 0:01:29
called police. Police attended, but
left, advising Alan Creasey to what | 0:01:29 | 0:01:37
his doors. They returned, to find
Alan Creasey seriously injured. CCTV | 0:01:37 | 0:01:45
shows Homer Griffey had returned to
his home after the police had left, | 0:01:45 | 0:01:51
carrying out the attack. Sussex
Police holding an internal | 0:01:51 | 0:01:56
investigation into what happened and
if lessons can be learned. We need | 0:01:56 | 0:02:00
to investigate, to see if the police
have heard in any way... It as a | 0:02:00 | 0:02:07
local investigation and they will be
investigating to see if we did | 0:02:07 | 0:02:10
everything that we could. And
everything reasonable. Alan | 0:02:10 | 0:02:16
Creasey's neighbours described him
as troubling. He has been a nuisance | 0:02:16 | 0:02:22
to the neighbourhood. He always
created chaos. He was our man | 0:02:22 | 0:02:28
looking for a fight. I cannot see
how the police have got any blame. | 0:02:28 | 0:02:33
They were looking for Duncan
Hearsey, telling him to lock doors. | 0:02:33 | 0:02:42
Duncan Hearsey was jailed for 21
years. Detectives described it as | 0:02:42 | 0:02:47
tragically unfortunately was not
arrested sooner. The professional | 0:02:47 | 0:02:51
standards department are going to
make their own judgment. | 0:02:51 | 0:02:56
Well, our reporter Claudia Sermbezis
joins me in the studio. | 0:02:56 | 0:02:58
Claudia, why are Sussex
Police carrying out | 0:02:58 | 0:03:00
their own investigation? | 0:03:00 | 0:03:03
They have basically been told by the
Independent Police Complaints | 0:03:03 | 0:03:07
Commission. They have decided not to
do a thorough investigation. Sussex | 0:03:07 | 0:03:13
Police have their own investigations
department. That is going to look | 0:03:13 | 0:03:21
closely at that, looking to see if
they should have done things | 0:03:21 | 0:03:27
differently, and we'll see if any
lessons can be learned. | 0:03:27 | 0:03:29
The pregnant partner of a mechanic
crushed to death by a car in Kent | 0:03:29 | 0:03:32
says she's heartbroken that she'll
have to raise their unborn | 0:03:32 | 0:03:35
child without him. | 0:03:35 | 0:03:43
22-year-old Ashley King died
as he was working at a garage | 0:03:43 | 0:03:45
in Folkestone last Thursday. | 0:03:45 | 0:03:50
Both Kent Police and the Health and
Safety Executive are investigating. | 0:03:50 | 0:03:53
Haley Hancock, who is five months
pregnant, says its "been a living | 0:03:53 | 0:03:56
nightmare" since she was told
Ashley had died. | 0:03:56 | 0:03:58
Leanne Rinne has this
exclusive report. | 0:03:58 | 0:03:59
In just a few months, Ashley King
would have been celebrating the | 0:03:59 | 0:04:05
birth of his daughter. Instead, his
family struggling to come to terms | 0:04:05 | 0:04:09
with the fact he is never coming
home. The Hall Street, just no life. | 0:04:09 | 0:04:20
And it was such a tragedy, no Ash. I
was looking at my messages, and I | 0:04:20 | 0:04:33
have had nothing after that. When
his daughter asked about him, her | 0:04:33 | 0:04:44
dad loved her so much, he died
trying. Ashley King was working for | 0:04:44 | 0:04:48
an automotive company, in Folkestone
when the accident happened last | 0:04:48 | 0:04:53
Thursday. Kent Police said no
criminal investigation currently, | 0:04:53 | 0:04:59
office is preparing a report for the
Coroner which will be in the past to | 0:04:59 | 0:05:03
the Health and Safety Executive,
also investigating. I have never | 0:05:03 | 0:05:07
been one to do the blame game, it is
just sad that this has happened. We | 0:05:07 | 0:05:12
need to take whatever we can from
his inspiration just to carry on. | 0:05:12 | 0:05:20
Ashley really tried to get on, brush
himself down. He went to work that | 0:05:20 | 0:05:31
day, thinking he was going to see
his family. Do all the normal | 0:05:31 | 0:05:35
things. He wanted to provide for
you. Obviously, I have lost him | 0:05:35 | 0:05:43
doing this. Tonight, a week after
his death, friends and family came | 0:05:43 | 0:05:52
together at the local park to let
off balloons. They said they are | 0:05:52 | 0:05:58
determined to celebrate his life
even though it has been cut short. | 0:05:58 | 0:06:04
Police have launched a murder
investigation after the death | 0:06:04 | 0:06:06
of a pub landlord in Folkestone. | 0:06:06 | 0:06:07
58-year-old Joe Daniels
was found with gunshot | 0:06:07 | 0:06:09
wounds in the Red Cow Pub
in Foord Road yesterday morning. | 0:06:09 | 0:06:12
Police are appealing for motorists
with dashboard cameras | 0:06:12 | 0:06:14
who were around Red Cow between 8:30
and 11:30 to come forward. | 0:06:14 | 0:06:23
The Sevenoaks MP Sir Michael Fallon
has spoken in Parliament | 0:06:23 | 0:06:25
for the first time since he resigned
from the Cabinet. | 0:06:25 | 0:06:28
Earlier this month he stood down
as Defence Secretary over | 0:06:28 | 0:06:30
sexual harassment claims,
admitting that his previous conduct | 0:06:30 | 0:06:32
towards women fell below
"acceptable standards". | 0:06:32 | 0:06:33
Speaking during a Commons
debate on the Budget, | 0:06:33 | 0:06:41
he urged fellow his MPs to be more
positive about the UK's | 0:06:41 | 0:06:44
prospects after Brexit. | 0:06:44 | 0:06:46
Hundreds of lectures were cancelled
today at the University of Brighton | 0:06:46 | 0:06:49
after teaching staff walked
out on strike. | 0:06:49 | 0:06:50
It's part of a dispute over
compulsory redundancies and comes | 0:06:50 | 0:06:54
after 90 staff left voluntarily
in September to cut costs. | 0:06:54 | 0:07:00
As our eduction Ccorrespondent
Lauren Moss reports, | 0:07:00 | 0:07:02
there are also concerns about more
campus closures in East Sussex. | 0:07:02 | 0:07:12
Striking to see jobs, lecturers
picking up placards. To compulsory | 0:07:17 | 0:07:24
redundancies, it is two too many.
University management seems to be | 0:07:24 | 0:07:28
indicating it wants to slim down the
University, we expect it could be | 0:07:28 | 0:07:35
many more occasions when we have to
defend people's jobs. This is the | 0:07:35 | 0:07:40
latest protest over the running of
the University. Last year, walk-outs | 0:07:40 | 0:07:46
about the 2019 closure of the
Hastings campus. Since then, 90 | 0:07:46 | 0:07:52
staff have left voluntarily.
Lecturers said the workload has | 0:07:52 | 0:07:55
increased. If these redundancies
go-ahead it could be more knock-on | 0:07:55 | 0:07:57
effects. The rationalisation of the
spread out nature of the site, that | 0:07:57 | 0:08:04
could mean a serious threat to some
of the outliying areas. 85% of the | 0:08:04 | 0:08:10
union voted in favour of the
striking. Now lecturers in south | 0:08:10 | 0:08:18
Dublin and none tomorrow either when
a similar walk-out takes place. The | 0:08:18 | 0:08:21
university said the strike is not
justified or an entry as students. | 0:08:21 | 0:08:26
It insists it is working hard to
resolve the situation with members | 0:08:26 | 0:08:30
of staff. Students divided on the
action being necessary. I do not | 0:08:30 | 0:08:37
think strikes should affect their
education. What they are protesting | 0:08:37 | 0:08:40
has nothing to do with us. It is sad
that the university is not | 0:08:40 | 0:08:45
listening. Students, we are standing
with them. We hope the university | 0:08:45 | 0:08:50
starts to listen. If it is a small
inconvenience just now, it is good | 0:08:50 | 0:08:56
to be long-term inconvenience.
Nobody backing down, the deadlock | 0:08:56 | 0:09:00
likely to cause more disruption. | 0:09:00 | 0:09:04
Now to the weather,
and after a windy 24 hours it's | 0:09:04 | 0:09:07
turning much colder... | 0:09:07 | 0:09:07
turning much colder... | 0:09:07 | 0:09:08
Nina Ridge has our forecast. | 0:09:08 | 0:09:12
No strong winds tonight. Expecting
some heavy rain. It should clear way | 0:09:12 | 0:09:21
as those temperatures start to drop.
It is going to be much colder this | 0:09:21 | 0:09:26
evening. The rain heaviest along the
south coast, further inland patchy | 0:09:26 | 0:09:31
and light. Temperatures beginning
the day at about five, six degrees. | 0:09:31 | 0:09:38
Cloud clears. Then we're going to
see some bright skies. The small | 0:09:38 | 0:09:44
chance of a scattering of showers.
The temperatures reaching eight, | 0:09:44 | 0:09:48
nine. As we go to the weekend,
Saturday starting chilly. Touch of | 0:09:48 | 0:09:55
frost. Temperatures beginning at
about freezing. We are expecting a | 0:09:55 | 0:10:00
weekend with some sunshine. The wind
coming down from the bringing the | 0:10:00 | 0:10:09
struggling temperatures, five, six.
Remember that for much of this week | 0:10:09 | 0:10:14
we have had night-time temperatures
at about 11, 12. As we move the | 0:10:14 | 0:10:20
forecast, we're going to stick with
that chilly theme. And the return of | 0:10:20 | 0:10:26
some night time frost. Before that,
some | 0:10:26 | 0:10:29 |
