Prison staff were forced to retreat to safety when inmates

went on the rampage at an East Sussex jail.

Cells and offices were damaged in the disorder at Lewes Prhson

The disturbance was brought to an end by a national response unit.

The Ministry of Justice says the prison is secure,

but the Prison Officers Association plan to take action nationally

later this week to highlight concerns about safety in prhsons.

Just after 7am, prison officers gathered outside the Lewes Prison

while specialist officers entered the jail.

They were there to restore order after what was described as a

serious disturbance, which apparently began

when staff tried to put prisoners back into their cdlls
