Hello, I'm Anjana Gadgil with the news here in the South. | :00:10. | :00:11.
17 people were taken to hospital this morning | :00:12. | :00:13.
on a motorway slip road in Oxfordshire. | :00:14. | :00:20.
It happened on the northbound exit at Junction 7 of the M40, | :00:21. | :00:23.
Thick fog made access to the scene more difficult, | :00:24. | :00:26.
and the slip road itself was closed for several hours. | :00:27. | :00:29.
Passengers escaped in such a hurry they left their belongings behind. | :00:30. | :00:34.
16 adults plus the coach driver were taken | :00:35. | :00:38.
to the John Radcliffe Hospital after last night's crash. | :00:39. | :00:41.
We had to stabilise the coach to prevent it sliding down the bank | :00:42. | :00:43.
any further and from rocking from side to side, | :00:44. | :00:46.
to make sure that the rescue operation was safe. | :00:47. | :00:49.
Then we had to search the immediate area for anybody that may have been | :00:50. | :00:53.
ejected from the vehicle, so we used thermal imaging cameras, | :00:54. | :00:57.
we used some of our remote cameras we have there, | :00:58. | :01:00.
we had a period of using audible detection, | :01:01. | :01:02.
so we needed a certain amount of silence. | :01:03. | :01:05.
when the Heathrow Express bus came off the M40 here at junction seven. | :01:06. | :01:13.
It went crashing through the barriers and flipped. | :01:14. | :01:16.
Certainly it would have been a chaotic scene. | :01:17. | :01:19.
You've got people inside who are probably wanting to get out | :01:20. | :01:21.
Also their medical welfare needs to be taken into account, | :01:22. | :01:25.
and sometimes getting them out quickly | :01:26. | :01:26.
isn't necessarily the best thing for them. | :01:27. | :01:28.
Two things that we are looking into, obviously keeping an open mind, | :01:29. | :01:34.
but the two main things are very foggy at the time and the driving | :01:35. | :01:37.
conditions and the fact that the bus wouldn't normally be leaving | :01:38. | :01:40.
It's not the first time a coach has veered off | :01:41. | :01:44.
This on-board footage from 2010 shows the moment | :01:45. | :01:51.
when an Oxford Tube bus crashed at the very same slip road. | :01:52. | :01:54.
The slip road was closed while barriers were prepared here today. | :01:55. | :02:07.
The Oxford Bus Company has been contacting passengers this afternoon | :02:08. | :02:10.
and as foggy conditions remain, investigations are continuing | :02:11. | :02:12.
to try to work out how this crash happened. | :02:13. | :02:23.
The fog has caused trouble problems across the region. Full visibility | :02:24. | :02:29.
on the coast affected ferry crossings. This view from Poole Bay | :02:30. | :02:38.
was typical. There have been delays and cancellations on flights at | :02:39. | :02:43.
Gatwick -- Gatwick, Heathrow and Southampton airports. | :02:44. | :02:46.
Meanwhile, Southern Rail is warning of severe disruption | :02:47. | :02:48.
as conductors stage another three-day strike. | :02:49. | :02:51.
The company says some routes will have no service | :02:52. | :02:54.
at all tomorrow, New Year's Day and Monday the 2nd - | :02:55. | :02:57.
while the majority of others will have a very limited service. | :02:58. | :03:00.
It is the biggest night out of the year but many people | :03:01. | :03:03.
are going to struggle to get home afterwards, | :03:04. | :03:05.
as the Southern strikes roll on into their 28th day. | :03:06. | :03:08.
The RMT insist they are not trying to disrupt | :03:09. | :03:10.
We did cancel the strikes on Christmas Eve | :03:11. | :03:15.
and the day before, you'll recollect. | :03:16. | :03:17.
We've done everything we can to recognise that the public have | :03:18. | :03:20.
been wonderful in supporting our position on maintaining | :03:21. | :03:22.
the safety-critical role of the guard on the train. | :03:23. | :03:27.
Once again Southern say they will have to cancel | :03:28. | :03:29.
around 50% of trains due to the strike. | :03:30. | :03:31.
Crucially, though, they are warning anyone who is planning | :03:32. | :03:37.
to use the trains to get home after a New Year's night out that | :03:38. | :03:40.
many later services, in particular, will be completely cancelled. | :03:41. | :03:43.
The conductors are striking over plans to give drivers responsibility | :03:44. | :03:45.
changing the conductors' roles to that of an on-board supervisor. | :03:46. | :03:51.
Southern said 220 conductors have signed up to the new contract | :03:52. | :03:56.
and many will begin their new roles from the 1st of January. | :03:57. | :03:59.
The proposals we have made are entirely reasonable. | :04:00. | :04:01.
We think the union's reaction has been unreasonable | :04:02. | :04:04.
We think these strikes are absolutely unnecessary | :04:05. | :04:07.
and I would call upon the trade unions to call off these strikes | :04:08. | :04:10.
A six-day drivers' strike is planned from January the 9th | :04:11. | :04:15.
and the unions say they can't rule out further action | :04:16. | :04:17.
for 2017 if an agreement isn't reached. | :04:18. | :04:32.
In the championship, the game between Brighton and Reading was | :04:33. | :04:42.
called off due to foggy conditions. In League 1, MK Dons twice held off | :04:43. | :04:48.
a Swindon town comeback to win 3-2 and in League 2, Portsmouth played | :04:49. | :04:54.
out a goalless draw in the fog at Yeovil. Christmas lights display and | :04:55. | :04:57.
a Buckinghamshire village has helped raise money for a girl with a rare | :04:58. | :05:02.
disorder. Frankie Ross has a syndrome which affects one in every | :05:03. | :05:06.
10,000 girls. More than ?1300 is going towards health care for her. | :05:07. | :05:14.
Now here is your regional weather forecast from Dan Downs. | :05:15. | :05:16.
It's generally cloudy to end the year, but for most | :05:17. | :05:20.
of us, it should be dry for the New Year's festivities. | :05:21. | :05:22.
As we can see, there's a cold front pushing down across the country | :05:23. | :05:25.
through New Year's Eve into New Year's Day but I think, | :05:26. | :05:28.
for most of us, it will stay dry until at least the small hours | :05:29. | :05:31.
Behind it, high pressure becomes more dominant again, | :05:32. | :05:34.
keeping things dry and settled but rather cold. | :05:35. | :05:38.
Tonight, we've still got some issues with fog and there is | :05:39. | :05:41.
a yellow weather warning in force from the Met Office | :05:42. | :05:43.
right through until ten o'clock tomorrow morning. | :05:44. | :05:45.
More cloud around tonight than last night, but temperatures not always | :05:46. | :05:48.
But we will see a touch of frost in places along with that fog | :05:49. | :05:55.
More some breaks in it, though, at times, and foremost, it stay dry. | :05:56. | :06:01.
Temperatures just about creeping into double figures for some. | :06:02. | :06:05.
Into the evening, staying cloudy but, I suspect, dry for most. | :06:06. | :06:09.
That rain comes through earlier on New Year's Day and when it | :06:10. | :06:18.
That's all from us for this evening. Have a happy New Year. Goodbye. | :06:19. | :06:34.
Good evening. Looking ahead to 2017 it looks like we will start off on a | :06:35. | :06:41.
cold note. This weather front will move south in the next day or so | :06:42. | :06:46.
bringing rain with it, but also much colder air following a lull behind. | :06:47. | :06:50.
It will sweep the fog away. It's grey for some places this afternoon. | :06:51. | :06:56.
You could hardly see across the river in the Greater London area. | :06:57. | :07:02.
Met Office warnings are in force. Stay tuned to BBC | :07:03. | :07:03. |
