Hello I'm Sally Taylor. Welcome to South Today. In tonight's | :00:01. | :00:03.
programme: Bus companies and campaigners warn | :00:03. | :00:13.
:00:13. | :00:13. | ||
of fewer services as Hampshire prepares to save on subsidies. | :00:13. | :00:18.
rural services and urban services are in the evenings and Sunday will | :00:18. | :00:21.
suffer some severe cutbacks. The Spinnaker Tower calls time on | :00:21. | :00:24.
its external lift as the company that runs it calls for a bigger | :00:24. | :00:28.
slice of profits. Israel defends its decision to hold | :00:28. | :00:32.
a 77-year-old woman in prison for four days. | :00:32. | :00:36.
And the sweet taste of success. The young apprentices who have grand | :00:36. | :00:46.
:00:46. | :00:46. | ||
designs for their product. We will create some more global things and | :00:46. | :00:56.
:00:56. | :01:00. | ||
More people use buses than any other form of public transport but | :01:01. | :01:05.
tonight there are warnings that yet more will be cut. Hampshire County | :01:05. | :01:08.
Council is expected to detail later this week which services will be | :01:08. | :01:12.
affected by a 2 million cut in the money it has, to subsidise bus | :01:12. | :01:18.
services. The cuts will come into force in October. | :01:18. | :01:21.
The Authority will follow West Sussex which has also cut the same | :01:21. | :01:27.
amount, and Surrey which cut 1.7m. Today the bus operator Stagecoach | :01:27. | :01:30.
predicted the cuts would mean some rural areas could lose their buses | :01:30. | :01:33.
entirely and urban areas would see services cut in the evenings and | :01:33. | :01:40.
weekends. Hampshire County Council said it had to live within its | :01:40. | :01:50.
:01:50. | :01:51. | ||
means after a cut in central Government funding. | :01:51. | :01:56.
At Andover bus station, half the services of rely on Council subsidy | :01:56. | :02:02.
because they are not commercially viable. The number 87 bus runs | :02:02. | :02:06.
every two hours. Today it is quite busy but often there are only a | :02:06. | :02:10.
couple of passengers. Rural services like this will face the | :02:10. | :02:16.
biggest cuts. People living in rural areas really do have to rely | :02:16. | :02:22.
on public transport, particularly those who are disabled and elderly. | :02:22. | :02:28.
It is very important. They will miss it. The government has cut the | :02:28. | :02:34.
rural bus subsidy by a third. In Hampshire that means around 2 | :02:34. | :02:37.
million less to support bus services like this one. It will | :02:37. | :02:42.
affect us. We will not go out as much. I will be driving soon so I | :02:42. | :02:46.
do not care. I would not be able to get to college aware that have to | :02:46. | :02:52.
learn to drive or get someone to drive me. Bus services in Hampshire | :02:52. | :02:59.
are often paid for by the council. They pay for 700800 passengers | :02:59. | :03:04.
every day. When people realise the scale of the cuts, there will be a | :03:04. | :03:09.
lot of political lobbying. It depends so much on where you live. | :03:09. | :03:13.
If you live in a small village you will potentially have a robust | :03:13. | :03:19.
facing at the -- bus service at all. On a smaller state it might just | :03:19. | :03:24.
mean you cannot go out on Sunday evening. Stagecoach will also need | :03:24. | :03:30.
the work of drivers. Rural services and urban services on the evening | :03:30. | :03:35.
sun Sunday will suffer some really severe cutbacks. I am afraid many | :03:35. | :03:39.
people will find this to be less convenient than before. I am very | :03:39. | :03:43.
sorry that people in rural areas will suffer this iPod in | :03:43. | :03:53.
:03:53. | :03:54. | ||
convenience. Type of in convenience. Hampshire County Council cannot say | :03:54. | :03:58.
yet which routes will be cut. Hardest hit will be those who have | :03:58. | :04:02.
no alternative but the bus. Marks and Spencer has been found | :04:02. | :04:05.
guilty of failing to protect staff and customers from being exposed to | :04:05. | :04:07.
asbestos during a major refurbishment at stores in Reading | :04:08. | :04:10.
and Bournemouth. The trial at Winchester Crown Court heard | :04:10. | :04:11.
construction workers removed ceiling tiles containing asbestos, | :04:12. | :04:14.
but M&S broke health and safety rules because contractors weren't | :04:14. | :04:22.
given enough time or space for safe removal. The company will be | :04:22. | :04:25.
sentenced in September. Union officials have called another | :04:25. | :04:28.
strike in Southampton. They have told the city council that workers | :04:28. | :04:32.
will go out next week. Toll collectors, parking officers and | :04:32. | :04:35.
street cleaners, will go on strike next Monday, if this week's talks | :04:35. | :04:45.
:04:45. | :04:46. | ||
don't reach a settlement. Union officials and City Council are | :04:46. | :04:50.
talking again tomorrow and if a decision is reached the strike will | :04:50. | :04:53.
be called off. The Ministry of Defence has | :04:53. | :04:56.
confirmed it still intends to move out of the town of Bordon, paving | :04:56. | :04:59.
the way for an eco town. If the Army does go, around 2,000 civilian | :04:59. | :05:03.
jobs will be lost in the area. The developers say that will be | :05:03. | :05:06.
mitigated by the 7,000 jobs they hope to create during the eco- | :05:06. | :05:08.
town's construction. But those opposed to the plan claim 5,500 new | :05:09. | :05:11.
homes will destroy the natural environment and increase traffic | :05:11. | :05:21.
:05:21. | :05:24. | ||
and noise. This is where the army trains many | :05:25. | :05:30.
of its engineers. You may be able to make out some tanks in the yard | :05:30. | :05:35.
fair. In a format years, this place, along with Arborfield, will close. | :05:35. | :05:41.
It is a big bloke to Bordon. There is not a beating heart to its | :05:41. | :05:46.
community but everybody needs more facilities here. Under the eco-town | :05:46. | :05:50.
plan, that is what is promised but that is not until the army moved | :05:50. | :05:55.
out in some years. Everyone should be concentrating their efforts to | :05:55. | :05:58.
date and trying to better the facilities we have, not some time | :05:58. | :06:03.
in the future with an eco-town. like the idea of the eco-town but | :06:03. | :06:06.
they seem to be changing their minds about what they are actually | :06:06. | :06:13.
going to do. Bordon his army. It is like Aldershot. If you get rid of | :06:13. | :06:17.
the army, you will lose a bit of Bordon. I do not think putting eco | :06:18. | :06:24.
in will make a lot of difference. The Government says it backs eco- | :06:24. | :06:28.
towns where there is genuine local support for them but residents are | :06:28. | :06:31.
not aware of the scale of the developments planned. There will be | :06:31. | :06:36.
building on green field as well as brownfield site and they claim | :06:36. | :06:41.
there is not enough public support. There is absolutely no documentary | :06:41. | :06:46.
evidence to support it. It is a town built on a life. Eight will be | :06:46. | :06:54.
live. There is no other way of putting it. The county council | :06:54. | :07:00.
disputes that and says they have had millions of pounds to kick- | :07:01. | :07:04.
start the process. They have spent strong green grants for home owners | :07:04. | :07:09.
and converted the fire engine into -- fire station into a show home. | :07:09. | :07:13.
It is all feeding into a master plan which the council says we | :07:13. | :07:17.
address everyone's concerns. A It is unfortunate that so little has | :07:17. | :07:21.
happened in Bordon over the years and it is our prime concern. This | :07:21. | :07:26.
is why the master plan is so important. It means we can ensure | :07:26. | :07:31.
that infrastructure comes up alongside housing. It is needed now, | :07:31. | :07:36.
as jobs are needed now. I can understand people's concerns but we | :07:36. | :07:42.
are working hard on it. More public consultation and the master plan in | :07:42. | :07:47.
the spring that a very sad day for Bordon. After 100 years, the Army | :07:47. | :07:50.
are to leave. It was the finishing touch for | :07:50. | :07:53.
Portsmouth's Spinnaker Tower - a glass lift offering stunning views | :07:53. | :07:56.
over the Solent. But it's never worked properly, and today leading | :07:56. | :07:59.
councillors have decided to give up on it for good. At the same time | :07:59. | :08:02.
confidential papers, seen by BBC South, show falling visitor numbers | :08:02. | :08:10.
could mean a cut in council profits from the iconic tower. Alex, why | :08:10. | :08:18.
quit on the lift now? They lift does work but the problem | :08:18. | :08:22.
is the reliability. The council has spent six years trying to improve | :08:22. | :08:27.
it, ever since the tower open. Today the councillor said they had | :08:27. | :08:30.
spent enough money on trying to get into work and it is likely that | :08:30. | :08:35.
decision will be approved tomorrow. That leaves them with two choices, | :08:35. | :08:39.
they can either remove the lift all together or leave it merited but | :08:39. | :08:43.
not working. It is now unlikely that it will ever do what it was | :08:44. | :08:49.
designed for. It does not go up straight. It goes up at an angle | :08:49. | :08:54.
outside, held on by just one side. It is very, very technically | :08:54. | :08:58.
difficult and it just has not worked. We have got to be realistic | :08:58. | :09:02.
about that. Inevitably I am disappointed by that. What does | :09:02. | :09:07.
this mean for the tower? Now the initial excitement has died | :09:07. | :09:12.
down, visitor numbers are falling. That is a concern. The operators | :09:12. | :09:16.
had hoped that get in the lift working would give the tower and | :09:16. | :09:19.
boost and encourage people to come back. Now that will not happen, | :09:19. | :09:24.
they need something new so they are looking at potential improvements | :09:24. | :09:26.
to the structure around the entrance. There are some questions | :09:26. | :09:30.
about who will pay for that. considerable amount of money has | :09:30. | :09:35.
been spent on the tower and we are still paying for it. We need to be | :09:35. | :09:38.
careful if we are to spend more money on it going forward to make | :09:38. | :09:43.
sure that we get a payback from the investment in a set period of time | :09:43. | :09:47.
and it is clearly and robustly demonstrated. The operators have | :09:47. | :09:51.
asked the council to take a cut in net profits from the tower because | :09:51. | :09:55.
the income has fallen. It is unlikely that the council will do | :09:55. | :09:58.
that. Despite the tower being a huge success, everyone agrees that | :09:59. | :10:03.
something is needed to keep its successful. We now know that is | :10:03. | :10:08.
highly unlikely to be the left. A woman from West Sussex claims she | :10:08. | :10:13.
was treated inhumanely by the Israeli authorities. Audrey Gray | :10:13. | :10:16.
says she was held against her will for four days in Israel last week | :10:16. | :10:20.
after she tried to get to the West Bank to show her support for the | :10:20. | :10:23.
Palestinians. The Israeli Embassy told BBC South they were doubtful | :10:23. | :10:25.
about her claims but she was welcome to make an official | :10:25. | :10:27.
complaint. Audrey Gray is back home after | :10:27. | :10:31.
being detained by the Israelis. She said she was travelling to the West | :10:31. | :10:36.
Bank at the invitation of families there. The campaign group said it | :10:36. | :10:41.
was for a week of peace for activities. Audrey Gray and other | :10:41. | :10:45.
campaigners were held at the airport in Tel Aviv last Friday and | :10:45. | :10:49.
she said that the inside the van as she was transferred to prison was | :10:49. | :10:53.
the most awful experience of our life. It was horrible. We were | :10:54. | :10:59.
locked in, slammed in, no air. The temperature was high. There were | :10:59. | :11:06.
little tiny strips up the top. I am seats. Eventually the other women | :11:07. | :11:12.
came. One French women came in their shackled. The Israelis had | :11:12. | :11:17.
this to say about the complaint about her treatment. I will doubt | :11:17. | :11:20.
that. I will check the case and I do nothing there was such a case. | :11:21. | :11:25.
If there was a case then it seems to be much easier to complain in | :11:25. | :11:29.
the media rather than to send in any official complaint through the | :11:29. | :11:34.
British Embassy. I am not aware of such a complaint. Audrey Gray said | :11:34. | :11:38.
the conditions in the place she was eventually held were reasonable. | :11:38. | :11:42.
She insists she was held against her will and was not given a reason | :11:42. | :11:48.
why. She was sent back to the UK after four days inside. The Israeli | :11:48. | :11:53.
embassy says she was held in a facility, not a prison. Audrey Gray | :11:53. | :11:57.
says her experience has not deterred her from supporting the | :11:57. | :12:00.
Palestinians but she would clarify her status with Israel before | :12:00. | :12:10.
:12:10. | :12:11. | ||
considering any return. 80 years ago it drew an audience of | :12:12. | :12:15.
half a million to watch - how the story of the Schneider Trophy Air | :12:15. | :12:20.
Race is being brought to a new generation. | :12:20. | :12:23.
Sundeep was 22 when she was terribly scarred, after acid was | :12:23. | :12:26.
thrown in her face in an apparently random attack. It was feared she | :12:26. | :12:30.
would lose her right eye after the incident near her home in Kenya. | :12:30. | :12:34.
But her Uncle, who lives in Britain, put her in touch with the | :12:34. | :12:36.
pioneering McIndoe Surgical Centre in Sussex and over the last six | :12:36. | :12:43.
years they have rebuilt her face and helped rebuild her life. | :12:43. | :12:49.
Some of you may find the images in this report disturbing. | :12:49. | :12:53.
Sunday bores in the car with her father when somebody threw acid at | :12:53. | :12:56.
her. That person has never been identified and she has never found | :12:56. | :13:03.
out why she was attacked. This was the impact. Her eyelids, and much | :13:03. | :13:08.
of her face burned away. She was terribly scarred. The first time I | :13:08. | :13:17.
saw it, it was a shock. It was really upsetting. It felt like the | :13:17. | :13:23.
world was coming to an end. There was no hope that I would get better. | :13:23. | :13:28.
Everything fell like it was born in one second. Had she stayed in Kenya, | :13:28. | :13:34.
she would have lost their sight permanently. Her case was taken on | :13:34. | :13:39.
by surgeons at a specialist burns centre in East Grinstead. More than | :13:39. | :13:44.
30 operations later and the results are clear. She needed to have skin | :13:44. | :13:48.
graft to her upper and lower eyelids. She needed to have surgery | :13:48. | :13:56.
to her neck and subsequently to her upper lip and to her hair to try | :13:56. | :14:00.
and expanded because she had a large bald patch. They have done a | :14:00. | :14:05.
really good job and I am really lucky that I got them to treat me | :14:05. | :14:13.
and help me to reach this far. It makes me feel like I still can live | :14:13. | :14:20.
like a normal person. She has done just that, going back to work and | :14:20. | :14:23.
marrying her fiance. She admits that in hospital, she was convinced | :14:23. | :14:29.
he would tell her it was all over. The good times were together and in | :14:29. | :14:33.
the bad times, why can't we be together? It never came across my | :14:33. | :14:36.
mind that I would say something like that. Because she is the same | :14:36. | :14:42.
person? Yes. While medical staff gave their time for free, the rest | :14:42. | :14:47.
of the costs were found by its fund raising. Now they are trying to | :14:47. | :14:57.
:14:57. | :14:57. | ||
raise more money to continue her It has been 12 years in the making | :14:57. | :15:01.
and is the largest development project in the South West. Now the | :15:01. | :15:05.
construction of Poole's Twin Sails Bridge is one step closer to | :15:05. | :15:08.
linking Poole and ham were they. A massive project designed to | :15:08. | :15:15.
regenerate the area -- how unworthy. This still leaves have been moved | :15:15. | :15:20.
into position today. -- but still leads. | :15:21. | :15:24.
A major technical challenge achieved by precision engineering. | :15:24. | :15:33.
A key stage in Poole's regeneration project. The steel needs to move | :15:33. | :15:37.
from dry land to the backwater Channel. | :15:37. | :15:43.
Certainly with the concept of it, it is a very unique design. | :15:43. | :15:47.
total the regeneration project is costing 37 million. 2000 new homes | :15:48. | :15:55.
will also be put on the 26 Hector side. The plan is that within 15 | :15:55. | :15:58.
years 100 million will go back into the local economy and | :15:58. | :16:02.
thousands of new jobs will be created. We know we have an elderly, | :16:02. | :16:07.
ageing population but we need to be able to balance that with jobs for | :16:07. | :16:14.
young people, homes, and that has always been our ambition and the | :16:14. | :16:22.
bridge and business opportunities Television broadcasts in the south | :16:22. | :16:26.
will make the switch to digital next year and a new campaign was | :16:26. | :16:30.
launched today in an effort to make sure nobody is left out. Starting | :16:30. | :16:35.
with a tea party in Southampton. Anybody not registered will ease | :16:35. | :16:39.
their signal after the switch-over. Staff are on hand to help locals | :16:39. | :16:42.
get to grips with the new system which will be rolled out at the | :16:42. | :16:46.
start of 2012. This is a gentle reminder that if | :16:46. | :16:50.
you have got any television in the house they get the signal through | :16:50. | :16:54.
an area or you need to do something next year when this whichever comes. | :16:54. | :16:58.
If you have Freeview television retune your equipment. If you are | :16:58. | :17:01.
still watching analogue by an external Freeview box, you will be | :17:01. | :17:09.
ready for switch-over. They were the elite of the day, the | :17:10. | :17:13.
pilots to chase the world speed record. Their constant attempts to | :17:13. | :17:22.
win this Naidu Trophy and will the nation. -- of Snider. -- Schneider. | :17:22. | :17:31.
The museum in the south has won the right to tell the story. | :17:31. | :17:36.
He began in 1911 as a competition to encourage technical innovation. | :17:36. | :17:39.
He became a matter of national pride with the British pitched | :17:39. | :17:44.
against the Italians, the French and the Americans. This love affair | :17:44. | :17:47.
with speed took this Schneider Trophy to all the glamourous places, | :17:47. | :17:54.
Monaco, Naples, Venice and hear in place. Planes flew at inconceivable | :17:54. | :18:00.
speeds and the men who flew them work front page news. Supermarine | :18:00. | :18:05.
S6 was built by a RJ Mitchell, here it is in the Solent Sky Museum in | :18:05. | :18:09.
Southampton. 80 years ago it was roaring over the skies of the solid, | :18:09. | :18:13.
watched by hundreds of thousands of people who had flocked to the coast | :18:13. | :18:18.
including when Russell and Norman Coward, both in their nineties now. | :18:18. | :18:22.
-- Len Russell. The roar was tremendous. Nobody had | :18:22. | :18:27.
ever heard a noise like that before. People instinctively at this point | :18:27. | :18:33.
docked. For a young lad it was like a bullet going through. Then there | :18:33. | :18:40.
was an exclamation went up from the crowd. Some were even clapping. | :18:40. | :18:47.
The British team won it five times. Of course RJ Mitchell's aircraft | :18:47. | :18:51.
design did not stop there. They were developing the technology | :18:51. | :18:55.
and that was so important because as we went into the Second World | :18:55. | :19:02.

You don't realise, it does pilots, they were like the David Beckhams | :19:23. | :19:27.

country. An annual fixture in the so-called season. A place to see | :21:00. | :21:06.
and be seen. One person will have a fair claim on the most glamourous | :21:06. | :21:14.

Just the chance to ride a proper racehorse in SME proper race, quite | :21:27. | :21:34.
scared, excited, I haven't really thought about it properly yet. And | :21:34. | :21:40.

she is pushing up as gills under the expert eye it of George Baker, | :21:48. | :21:54.
at his stables near Fordingbridge. I have a rather cliched impression | :21:54. | :21:58.
of what a supermodel would turn up and expect, France on to the place | :21:58. | :22:03.
with a big pat and look at the weather and probably go home. She | :22:03. | :22:07.
was fantastic, got on the horse, clearly a competent rider and good | :22:07. | :22:11.
fun, good fun for us to have her around and hopefully she is | :22:11. | :22:15.
enjoying it. This is Edie in her day job, she | :22:15. | :22:18.
has been a model for five years and has quickly become one of the most | :22:18. | :22:23.
sought-after places in fashion. She will be riding a rising star at | :22:23. | :22:27.
Goodwood as well. Her horse, named after his trainer George Baker was | :22:28. | :22:31.
ridden to victory at Newmarket on Friday night by Frankie Dettori. | :22:31. | :22:37.
I think everybody is fairly competitive. And super competitive, | :22:37. | :22:42.
I really want to win. I will take- no-prisoners! | :22:42. | :22:46.
What Prix manner was handed Desert Orchid, racing's brightest star | :22:46. | :22:52.

in the spotlight again. Keep an eye out next Thursday | :22:55. | :22:57.
afternoon. You need courage. | :22:57. | :23:01.
At Lord Sugar may have found his next apprentice last night, did you | :23:01. | :23:04.

I think we have a good chance of If we are successful it will go | :23:36. | :23:41.

Monopoly quite a lot. You are fired. These children are not out to | :23:49. | :23:53.
impress Lord Sugar, but they are hoping to taste sweet success -- | :23:53. | :23:57.
success with their chocolate. They have declined -- designed three | :23:57. | :24:02.
bars, one with banana and toffee, one aimed at mothers, and a local | :24:02. | :24:06.
bar for local people. A local chef from a cookery school came and did | :24:07. | :24:10.
some work and we have got some parents that run a marketing firm | :24:10. | :24:14.
and they have put a massive amount of time in taking the children's | :24:14. | :24:20.

through our head office to see where we go. Some great Commons, | :24:55. | :24:59.
really pleased. Remember the first ball of cells, | :24:59. | :25:02.
don't take no for an answer. They still managed to get them on the | :25:02. | :25:10.
supermarket shelves. Other chocolate bars are available. | :25:10. | :25:13.
Well done, fantastic. Going global. | :25:13. | :25:17.

Some areas have been lovely sunny conditions. The wind tomorrow | :26:18. | :26:20.
afternoon will change direction, coming from the north, feeling | :26:20. | :26:27.
colder. Clear skies in some places tomorrow night. The cloud of rides | :26:27. | :26:36.
