Hello and welcome to South Today. In the programme - a hospital | :00:07. | :00:12.
consultant is suspended as hundreds of cases of childhood epilepsy are | :00:12. | :00:16.
examined. Her I am concerned because we do not know if it is | :00:16. | :00:24.
medication that has been wrongly prescribed. -- I am concerned. | :00:24. | :00:29.
Campsite warning - was vague death caused by a campsite barbiturate | :00:29. | :00:35.
used to keep warm? Housebound, but taking action. The campaign for | :00:35. | :00:40.
more research into ME. You have to say goodbye to your of light and | :00:40. | :00:46.
embrace your new one, which is tough. And revealing the hidden | :00:46. | :00:51.
secret of Tudor times. We have uncovered graffiti that has been | :00:51. | :01:01.
:01:01. | :01:05. | ||
The case notes of more than 550 children with epilepsy are being | :01:06. | :01:08.
reviewed after a paediatric consultant at a Surrey hospital was | :01:08. | :01:13.
suspended. Dr Nic Driver was taken out of his post in February | :01:13. | :01:16.
following concerns over the diagnosis and treatment of patients. | :01:16. | :01:19.
Parents have been written to and advised not to stop any medication | :01:19. | :01:29.
:01:29. | :01:32. | ||
their children are on before receiving medical advice. | :01:32. | :01:36.
569 very sick children have passed through these corridors, all with | :01:36. | :01:40.
two things in common - they had epilepsy and for patients of Dr Nic | :01:40. | :01:48.
Driver, an expert in the field. number of concerns have been raised | :01:48. | :01:52.
with regards to the diagnosis and treatment of specific patients who | :01:52. | :01:58.
were under the care of Dr Nic Driver. So we are talking about | :01:58. | :02:02.
diagnosis and then the prescription of drugs? That is correct. | :02:02. | :02:07.
trust have written to parents and told them not to stop our Alter any | :02:08. | :02:17.
medication their child may be taking. This mother has a different | :02:17. | :02:22.
opinion of Dr Nic Driver. He saved Alex's life twice and you cannot | :02:22. | :02:30.
forget that. It is a very odd situation on a Bank Holiday weekend | :02:30. | :02:36.
and have him have a life threatening seizure and his | :02:36. | :02:44.
consultant is called out and say Symes. Another consultant raised | :02:44. | :02:52.
concerns in February, but it has taken until now to tell parents. | :02:52. | :02:57.
needed to get the advice of independent expert in the field to | :02:57. | :03:01.
assess whether it there were concerns that needed to be | :03:01. | :03:08.
investigated. Now a team of experts will check every child's record. | :03:08. | :03:13.
The hospital is standing by its man. They say there is no question of | :03:13. | :03:20.
malice in any of that allegations. No question of abuse either. | :03:20. | :03:23.
Colleagues describe Dr Nic Driver as hard-working, diligent and | :03:23. | :03:28.
caring. The air are no absolute boundaries or criteria for making a | :03:28. | :03:38.
diagnosis. If I make and -- a diagnosis of an ulcer it is because | :03:38. | :03:42.
I can see it. It is much more difficult to diagnose something | :03:42. | :03:48.
like epilepsy. We contacted Dr Nic Driver, he said he could not | :03:48. | :03:53.
comment because investigations were ongoing. It is a worrying time for | :03:53. | :03:57.
all involved. A man died after the 4x4 he was | :03:57. | :04:00.
driving crashed into a highways vehicle parked on the hard shoulder | :04:00. | :04:03.
of the M27 in Hampshire. The accident happened at about a | :04:03. | :04:06.
quarter to 11 on the eastbound carriageway of the motorway in Ower, | :04:06. | :04:08.
causing severe traffic delays. A team of maintenance workers, who | :04:08. | :04:18.
:04:18. | :04:24. | ||
were cutting a grass verge at the time of the crash, were uninjured. | :04:24. | :04:27.
Safety experts have issued a warning to campers after a man died | :04:27. | :04:30.
in the New Forest from what's thought to be carbon monoxide | :04:30. | :04:32.
poisoning. Vincent Clare from Milton Keynes was found dead last | :04:32. | :04:35.
Friday at the Red Shoot Camping Site. His wife was taken to | :04:35. | :04:38.
hospital. It's believed they took their gas barbecue inside their | :04:38. | :04:45.
tent to keep warm. It was meant to be a celebration. | :04:45. | :04:50.
The Vincent Clare was camping on this site with his wife to | :04:50. | :04:54.
celebrate his 50th birthday. But the trip ended in tragedy with the | :04:55. | :04:59.
discovery of his body. It is thought beat couple used a gas | :04:59. | :05:03.
barbecue like this one in an attempt to warm up. They took it | :05:04. | :05:09.
inside their tent to heat it, but unknown to them, it was emitting | :05:09. | :05:14.
but deadly gas carbon monoxide. The next morning Vincent Clare was | :05:14. | :05:23.
found dead in his sleeping bag. When I got here the ambulance were | :05:23. | :05:29.
already here. Obviously the family were very shocked and so were we. | :05:29. | :05:33.
We are saddened by the whole incident. These campers say many | :05:33. | :05:39.
people do not know the dangers. cook everything outside. People do | :05:39. | :05:45.
not realise that it can store happened in enclosed places. At the | :05:45. | :05:50.
some holidays begin, safety experts want to make sure of all campers | :05:50. | :05:58.
are warned of. -- as the summer holidays begin. Do not take | :05:58. | :06:04.
anything like a stove or barbecue into the tent as it might be giving | :06:04. | :06:09.
off carbon monoxide. A teenage mother and a 27-year-old | :06:09. | :06:12.
man have been jailed for taking part in an horrific attack in | :06:12. | :06:14.
Southampton that left a cyclist with severe head injuries and brain | :06:14. | :06:17.
damage. David Baker was savagely beaten and will never fully recover | :06:17. | :06:20.
from his injuries. The judge described the attack as cowardly | :06:20. | :06:24.
and unprovoked. The sentences were handed down in the past hour and | :06:24. | :06:27.
Steve Humphrey joins us from the newsroom. Steve when did this | :06:27. | :06:37.
:06:37. | :06:38. | ||
attack take place? This vicious attack took place on at Southampton | :06:38. | :06:46.
central bridge last year. That gang involved -- the gang involved had | :06:46. | :06:50.
been drinking and one of them was higher on crack cocaine. There was | :06:50. | :06:59.
building works and pedestrians were funnelled into this walkway. David | :06:59. | :07:08.
Baker was attacked, beaten about he's head -- beaten about his head | :07:08. | :07:13.
severely. He suffered traumatic head injuries which work life | :07:13. | :07:16.
threatening. He was treated in intensive care, but suffered brain | :07:16. | :07:22.
damage. He can no longer cycle and needs help with everyday tasks. He | :07:22. | :07:27.
can only walk outside with a crutch. And who were the people sentenced | :07:27. | :07:34.
today? Two people were sentenced today at Southampton Crown Court. | :07:34. | :07:38.
Stephanie Hill was sentenced to four years and will be on licence | :07:38. | :07:44.
for seven years. She kicked David Baker in the head. The other | :07:44. | :07:50.
accused, John Smith, was the main aggressor. He was given an | :07:50. | :07:54.
indeterminate sentence for public protection and told he would not be | :07:54. | :08:00.
considered for release until he had served at least four years in jail. | :08:00. | :08:07.
He had David Baker's blood on him. Hampshire police get this reaction. | :08:07. | :08:13.
The quality of his life a will be reduced as the damage is permanent. | :08:13. | :08:18.
It has impacted on him and his family. Going back to the attack. | :08:18. | :08:23.
It took place on the central bridge in June. David was cycling home | :08:23. | :08:26.
when he came across this group of people and they were high on drink | :08:26. | :08:36.
:08:36. | :08:37. | ||
and drugs. That is correct. prosecution say a total of four | :08:37. | :08:42.
people were involved. They say two of them were not prosecuted because | :08:42. | :08:48.
of lack of evidence. Thank you. | :08:48. | :08:52.
A driver has been jailed for more than six years over the death of | :08:52. | :08:55.
his passenger in a car crash in Brighton. Jonathan Wenham, who's 40, | :08:55. | :08:57.
pleaded guilty today to causing death by dangerous driving and | :08:57. | :09:00.
making a false statement to obtain insurance. Nicholas Messenger, who | :09:00. | :09:03.
was 28 and from London, was killed in the crash. Wenham's BMW hit a | :09:03. | :09:11.
tree in Grand Parade in January. He was over the drink drive limit. | :09:11. | :09:15.
This is Gabi Lewis. She's been housebound for two-and-a-half years | :09:15. | :09:18.
due to ME. You might know it as Chronic Fatigue Syndrome, or one of | :09:18. | :09:21.
the many other names the illness has been called over the years. | :09:21. | :09:24.
Whatever name it goes by, ME has often attracted controversy over | :09:24. | :09:28.
whether it's a medical or a psychological condition. Gabi is in | :09:28. | :09:31.
no doubts she suffers from a medical problem and is launching a | :09:31. | :09:41.
:09:41. | :09:46. | ||
charity to raise funds to conduct more research into the illness. | :09:46. | :09:50.
Gabi Lewis cannot do the things that most of us take for granted. | :09:50. | :09:55.
In it takes me about an hour were to get out of bed. When I wake up, | :09:55. | :10:01.
my body is rigid. The pain is burning and ripping it right | :10:01. | :10:08.
through my body. It is hard because the slightest movement sets of my | :10:08. | :10:18.
:10:18. | :10:18. | ||
blood pressure problems. Life has not always been like this. She used | :10:18. | :10:23.
to have a successful job in London and a busy social life. It has been | :10:23. | :10:28.
a nightmare. The hardest thing I have had to do is say goodbye to my | :10:28. | :10:32.
friends because I cannot interact with them like this. You have to | :10:32. | :10:36.
say goodbye to your of life and embrace your new one, which is | :10:36. | :10:46.
really, really tough. The main symptom of ME is disabling | :10:46. | :10:51.
tightness. It can affect any age group, but is more common in people | :10:51. | :10:58.
in their forties and fifties. Women are more likely to develop the | :10:58. | :11:03.
condition. Other sentence up memory problems, headaches, joint problems | :11:03. | :11:11.
and sensitivity to noise and law. It is not a psychological condition, | :11:11. | :11:18.
but it can be triggered by a virus. If you are sick for a long period | :11:18. | :11:23.
of time and you are unwell, it is understandable that some people get | :11:23. | :11:28.
anxious or fed-up. But it is not primarily a psychological decision. | :11:28. | :11:33.
Gabi Lewis is hoping that by launching her charity, more people | :11:33. | :11:38.
will understand her condition and the cure will hopefully be found. | :11:38. | :11:45.
Still to come on the programme - yet another honour for one of the | :11:45. | :11:53.
well's gates -- world's great guitarists. | :11:53. | :11:56.
It's cost more than 4 million and now one of Southampton's most | :11:56. | :11:59.
important historic buildings is about to re-open to the public | :11:59. | :12:01.
after extensive renovations. The 15th century Tudor House has been | :12:01. | :12:04.
closed for nearly ten years and it's restoration has uncovered some | :12:04. | :12:13.
previously hidden secrets. Fancy seeing some historic grafitti? | :12:13. | :12:19.
It is one of the mess familiar buildings in the City - | :12:19. | :12:23.
Southampton's Tudor House, known by generations. 500 years ago when | :12:23. | :12:29.
this house was being built, the first ships were reaching America. | :12:29. | :12:32.
Shakespeare was a light and the first books were being printed. It | :12:32. | :12:38.
was the time of invention and exploration and great activity, not | :12:38. | :12:47.
least here than Southampton. The staff -- here in Southampton. The | :12:47. | :12:51.
building deteriorated and had to be closed down. In the last decade a | :12:51. | :12:56.
lot has been done to put it bright and in the process some hidden | :12:56. | :13:04.
treasures had been discovered. have discovered graffiti on this | :13:04. | :13:08.
war which shows interesting caricatures of people, animals, | :13:08. | :13:18.
ships. The man who built all this, John Dawtry, also provided the | :13:18. | :13:22.
timber for the Mary Rose. In it is interesting that some of the timber | :13:22. | :13:28.
here is the same as those used to build the Mary Rose. We wonder if | :13:28. | :13:35.
he had some extra ones which fell off the back of a cart! Now the | :13:35. | :13:40.
garden has been restored as well. It is an iconic feature of | :13:40. | :13:44.
Southampton and it has been sad whilst it has been closed because a | :13:44. | :13:48.
whole generation of schoolchildren have not been able to visit it. But | :13:48. | :13:53.
we hope that now we are going to reopen, it will be a magnet for | :13:53. | :13:57.
local people and visitors to the city. The building will be open to | :13:57. | :14:03.
the public again a week tomorrow. With a career spanning almost 50 | :14:03. | :14:06.
years, and collaborations with the likes of Mick Jagger, Kate Bush and | :14:06. | :14:09.
Stevie Wonder, Jeff Beck's life story reads like a Who's Who of | :14:09. | :14:13.
music superstardom. He's been inducted into the Rock and Roll | :14:13. | :14:17.
Hall of Fame twice and has received six Grammy Awards. And, as Claudia | :14:17. | :14:20.
Sermbezis reports, he can add to that list an honorary degree from | :14:20. | :14:30.
:14:30. | :14:42. | ||
He has been described as one of the greatest guitarists of all time. | :14:42. | :14:49.
Geoff Beck uses his fingers when he is playing to create depth and soul. | :14:49. | :14:59.
:14:59. | :15:02. | ||
I used to keep dropping the plectrum and I got so embarrassed. | :15:02. | :15:08.
I can use my nails instead. It is a more personal style. | :15:08. | :15:16.
performances have won him six Grammy us, including for his own | :15:16. | :15:23.
interpretation of a famous Beatles track. I am totally blown away. It | :15:23. | :15:30.
is so bizarre. You get all that recognition in Los Angeles and all | :15:30. | :15:35.
over the world and not in my home town. It is nice to have that, | :15:35. | :15:40.
especially coming from Sussex, which is where I live. Geoff Beck | :15:40. | :15:50.
:15:50. | :15:51. | ||
was nominated by it Bruce Dickinson from the Institute of modern music. | :15:51. | :15:56.
We had this amazing opportunity to get him into the college. He spoke | :15:56. | :16:03.
to the students about his 40 year career, but the magic thing was he | :16:03. | :16:07.
played his guitar and some of the students got up and everyone had a | :16:07. | :16:15.
jam. He was incredible. One student described it as having got in the | :16:15. | :16:20.
room. For the Sussex students it was a once-in-a-lifetime | :16:20. | :16:30.
:16:30. | :16:32. | ||
opportunity to jam with the man known as the guitarists guitarist. | :16:32. | :16:36.
I am not sure what you are planning to do this weekend, but thousands | :16:36. | :16:41.
of people will be making their way to Blenheim Palace because of this | :16:41. | :16:45.
weekend the Game Fair is taking place. It is a huge Countryside | :16:45. | :16:50.
event. We have sent out will report to bear to look around. I have to | :16:50. | :17:00.
say, that is a wonderful backdrop. Isn't it? It is so beautiful, it is | :17:00. | :17:06.
associated with tranquillity, but it has been buzzing with excitement | :17:07. | :17:12.
because of the game fair. Over three days, 140,000 people will be | :17:13. | :17:19.
attending it and having a taste of country life and. I had been having | :17:19. | :17:24.
a go at different things, but you think someone like me would suit | :17:24. | :17:33.
country life? Let us have a look at how I got on today. We are teaching | :17:33. | :17:42.
people to fly cast. We are not using hooks. Before we go on with | :17:42. | :17:50.
the casting, I am going to ask you to wear a hat and a pair of glasses. | :17:50. | :17:56.
It is not that easy. Your back cast was really good. I went back a | :17:56. | :18:04.
little bit too much there. When it is done well, it looks graceful and | :18:04. | :18:10.
you get to spend time in beautiful environments, like here. We are | :18:10. | :18:15.
doing something that is slow and meditative. I just had a lesson for | :18:15. | :18:22.
the fun of it and so I could get better. Did you learn anything new? | :18:22. | :18:32.
:18:32. | :18:41. | ||
Yes. I learnt about the three. Grip. -- 3 point grip. A in and shoot at. | :18:41. | :18:51.
That was a good shot. -- Ama and Shute Shelve. I brought my Doc with | :18:51. | :19:01.
:19:01. | :19:03. | ||
me and he is a bit uncontrollable. -- dog. There is some want back and | :19:03. | :19:13.
help me with his behaviour. You are looking for the basics. We are | :19:13. | :19:23.
:19:23. | :19:26. | ||
going to lose him. Maximus, come back here! This is the issue. Sit. | :19:26. | :19:32.
Sit. As you can see, I finally got | :19:33. | :19:37.
Maximus to sit, but I do not know for how long. I will be back with | :19:37. | :19:47.
:19:47. | :19:55. | ||
the weather later in the programme. Thank you. Over to the sport. | :19:55. | :19:57.
Southampton have beaten off competition from a host of other | :19:57. | :20:00.
European clubs to sign Belgian winger Steve De Ridder. The 24- | :20:00. | :20:03.
year-old has been playing in the top division of Dutch football. | :20:03. | :20:05.
He's signed a three-year contract after being signed for what's | :20:05. | :20:08.
described as a significant undisclosed fee. But Saints boss | :20:08. | :20:10.
Nigel Adkins denied he's been brought in to replace 10 million | :20:10. | :20:13.
rated Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain. He's been repeatedly linked with Arsenal | :20:13. | :20:16.
and incurred his manager's wrath this week after being quoted saying | :20:16. | :20:25.
he'd like to leave in a tabloid newspaper. Everyone said before we | :20:25. | :20:29.
even preceded training that it had been a done deal. But he is still | :20:29. | :20:35.
here, he has trained hard and he is being respectful of his team-mate. | :20:35. | :20:44.
He had a smile on his face today. We have to look after him. | :20:44. | :20:50.
cricket, the pitch inspectors have been back to the Rose Bowl on day | :20:50. | :21:00.
:21:00. | :21:06. | ||
two of the County Championship matches. Here are the result so far. | :21:06. | :21:16.

One of the ways cricket tries to attract young players while they're | :21:34. | :21:38.
still at school is through Kwik Cricket and the Year 6 girls at The | :21:38. | :21:41.
Vale First and Middle school at Findon in West Sussex have just | :21:41. | :21:44.
been crowned National Kwik Cricket Champions. They came out on top of | :21:44. | :21:46.
the 130,000 other pupils who entered the competition. But | :21:46. | :21:49.
commiserations to the team they beat in the final at Derby - they | :21:49. | :21:52.
were from Oakley Junior School, near Basingstoke. | :21:52. | :21:55.
Last month, she was damaged and left stricken on the Solent after | :21:55. | :21:58.
being hit by another vessel in the Round the Island Race. But after | :21:58. | :22:01.
all the years she lay forgotten and rotting,it was never likely to be | :22:01. | :22:04.
more than a minor setback for Gipsy Moth IV. Today, plans to preserve | :22:04. | :22:07.
Sir Francis Chichester's iconic yacht as a working national | :22:07. | :22:09.
maritime monument were announced. And as Richard Westcott reports, | :22:09. | :22:19.
she's already helping disadvantaged youngsters. | :22:19. | :22:23.
For decades she sat on display and rotting in Greenwich. Now Gipsy | :22:23. | :22:31.
Moth IV is back where she belongs. She is not breaking records any | :22:31. | :22:37.
more, but she is inspiring young people. It has really improve my | :22:37. | :22:44.
confidence. Before I wouldn't do anything on a boat. Now I am | :22:44. | :22:51.
steering it and telling everyone what to do. BBC programmes will be | :22:51. | :22:56.
giving coverage of the return of Sir Francis Chichester of... It is | :22:56. | :23:02.
a story of eccentric British behaviour. Aged 65, Sir Francis | :23:02. | :23:06.
Chichester became the fastest sailor to circle the globe in a | :23:06. | :23:15.
small boat. Gipsy Moth IV combines state of the art design and a green | :23:16. | :23:21.
he took to keep them warm. It is amazing how many young people know | :23:22. | :23:25.
about the boat. It helps to inspire them to think about what it is | :23:25. | :23:35.
:23:35. | :23:36. | ||
possible for one person to do and also it will inspire them to push | :23:36. | :23:41.
themselves forward. It has helped me with my future. I will be | :23:41. | :23:46.
working here next year. You might have noticed it's got a master | :23:46. | :23:52.
missing, thanks to a racing accident. It will soon be prepared. | :23:52. | :23:59.
An old icon given a new lease of life. | :23:59. | :24:06.

raining. Yes, but it has been a lovely day. | :24:15. | :24:19.
This is not the only thing happening across our region. Let us | :24:19. | :24:29.

There have been a few showers throughout the day and there will | :25:36. | :25:42.
be more this evening. The cloud is because towards the West. Overnight, | :25:42. | :25:52.

but because of the showers shifts to the north and east of the region. | :25:56. | :26:00.
Towards the end of the night, temperatures 10 or 11 Celsius. A | :26:00. | :26:08.
bright start tomorrow morning. That sunshine should be with us for much | :26:08. | :26:13.
of Saturday. Diary a few showers throughout the day. Feeling a | :26:13. | :26:23.
:26:23. | :26:30. | ||
little bit warmer as well. As we head into the evening, a touch | :26:30. | :26:38.
fresher as the crowd melts away from the west of a wet region. A | :26:38. | :26:42.
sunny start to Sunday and Sunday will be a lovely end to a what | :26:42. | :26:46.
