Hello, I am Sally Taylor. Welcome to South Today. Tonight: At the

:00:07.:00:10.

warnings after a devoted family man is accidentally gassed to death in

:00:10.:00:14.

a tent. We have used generators for such a

:00:14.:00:18.

long time, so if we can get the message out about how to use them

:00:18.:00:22.

and where to base them, that is something we needed to do.

:00:22.:00:27.

The sailors back home but facing up to life in a smaller Navy.

:00:27.:00:32.

Trying to protect a piece of D-Day history and the bottom of the sea.

:00:32.:00:37.

And sporting greats, celebrities... And then there is Gordon. The

:00:37.:00:42.

online campaign to put this man in the Olympic torch spotlight. I am

:00:42.:00:46.

overwhelmed by the number of people who have got behind Gordon and said

:00:46.:00:56.
:00:56.:01:00.

Good evening. An inquest has heard that a cruel combination of events

:01:00.:01:04.

led to the death of a young father who was poisoned by exhaust fumes

:01:04.:01:09.

as he slept in a tent. Richard Phillips from Worthing died while

:01:09.:01:13.

in Somerset last September. His widow said she hopes his tragic

:01:13.:01:20.

death will serve as a warning to others.

:01:20.:01:27.

Richard Phillips had two great loves in his life - his family...

:01:27.:01:32.

And a riding off-road motorcycles. This is him, filmed by his son,

:01:32.:01:36.

practising near their home in Worthing. His widowed travelled

:01:36.:01:44.

from West Sussex to Somerset for her husband's inquest. He was

:01:44.:01:49.

everybody's hero, I think. Since he was six, it was his life. He loved

:01:50.:01:55.

every single minute of it. He has passed that on to my boys, so we

:01:55.:01:59.

are continuing to race even though he is not here. He was a fantastic

:01:59.:02:03.

man and would do anything for anybody. In September, he was

:02:03.:02:08.

camping with friends ahead of riding his bike in a competition.

:02:08.:02:11.

This photograph shows the petrol generator outside the tent where he

:02:11.:02:16.

slept, powering an electric heater inside. The inquest heard it should

:02:16.:02:22.

have been a metre away but was half that distance. The winds that night

:02:22.:02:26.

were too light to blow the carbon monoxide fumes away but strong

:02:26.:02:30.

enough to blow the poisonous gas into the tent. His friends had gone

:02:30.:02:36.

to bed later, and the generator was switched off. Richard was exposed

:02:36.:02:42.

for the longest time and died. He was just 38. Recording a verdict of

:02:42.:02:46.

accidental death, the coroner said it was the combination of those

:02:46.:02:50.

factors that caused Richard Phillips's death. Were any one of

:02:50.:02:55.

them to have been any different, he may well have survived. If we can

:02:55.:03:00.

stop it happening to anybody else, that is our main goal. It was such

:03:00.:03:06.

a tragedy. Something that we never would have expected. We have used

:03:06.:03:10.

generators for such a long time, so if we can get the message out about

:03:10.:03:14.

how to use them, where to place them, then that is something we

:03:14.:03:20.

need to do. On her way home to Worthing, she would lay flowers at

:03:20.:03:24.

the site where her husband died, hoping lessons would be learned and

:03:24.:03:31.

that others would not suffer as she has.

:03:31.:03:34.

A second man has been charged with the murder of Andrew Rickwood from

:03:34.:03:38.

Aldershot. Mr Rickwood was found in Basing Drive with serious injuries

:03:38.:03:43.

and later pronounced dead at Frimley Park Hospital in Surrey.

:03:43.:03:46.

24-year-old William Aaron Stewart appeared at Aldershot magistrates'

:03:46.:03:49.

court this morning and was remanded in custody.

:03:49.:03:54.

A coroner has ruined that three soldiers shot at their base in

:03:54.:03:58.

Helmand Province by a road Afghan colleague were unlawfully killed. -

:03:58.:04:06.

- has ruled. The three soldiers were all from the first Battalion

:04:06.:04:08.

Royal Gurkha Rifles and were killed in the attack on their base last

:04:09.:04:14.

year. Nearly 500 sailors arrived back in

:04:14.:04:18.

Portsmouth today aboard two warships after six months at sea.

:04:18.:04:22.

HMS Richmond has been involved in anti-piracy operations, while HMS

:04:23.:04:27.

Iron Duke's deployment included frontline action of Libya. Both

:04:27.:04:31.

crews are expected to be very busy over the coming years as the number

:04:31.:04:35.

of sailors and chips is reduced as part of the Government's defence

:04:35.:04:39.

review. Steve Humphrey is in Portsmouth. Then maybe is certainly

:04:40.:04:43.

under pressure. Yes, if you add the Navy's

:04:43.:04:46.

commitments around the world together and factor in operations

:04:46.:04:51.

of the Libyan coast, you realise why the fleet is so busy. These

:04:51.:04:55.

ships have both been away for over six months. HMS Richmond has been

:04:55.:05:00.

carrying out anti-piracy patrols of the Horn of Africa and has been as

:05:00.:05:05.

far as Singapore, Brunei and the Seychelles. HMS Iron Duke has been

:05:05.:05:09.

carrying out patrols in the Gulf and, on the way home, got involved

:05:09.:05:14.

in operations of the Libyan coast. Little wonder that the sailors were

:05:14.:05:18.

so delighted to get back to Portsmouth this morning!

:05:18.:05:22.

Cheering crowds welcomed HMS Richmond and HMS Iron Duke back to

:05:22.:05:27.

Portsmouth. In the wake of the Government's defence review, these

:05:27.:05:30.

two warships represent a 10th of the UK's entire fleet of frigates

:05:30.:05:35.

and destroyers. Everyone on board, and their families and friends,

:05:35.:05:39.

knows that the Navy is facing a busy future. If there are less

:05:39.:05:43.

people and ships but still the same amount of work to do. We are going

:05:43.:05:52.

to be busier. It has gone quicker. What has it been like for you while

:05:52.:05:57.

he has been a way? Tough, but you try to get into routine so you do

:05:57.:06:00.

not notice it as much. Senior officers say that with fewer ships

:06:00.:06:06.

and sailors, the Navy is becoming more efficient than ever before.

:06:06.:06:12.

Through a well trained, resilient crew, there is no doubt that the

:06:12.:06:18.

Navy is working hard. The conflict in Libya has added to the Navy's

:06:18.:06:22.

commitments. HMS Iron Duke was called into action on her way home

:06:23.:06:29.

to destroy a pro Gaddafi short battery. They had a very intense,

:06:30.:06:33.

excited feel about it. They were inside the range of certain weapons

:06:33.:06:38.

but the key thing was to balance the risk of getting ashore without

:06:38.:06:42.

putting the ship in undue danger. In the midst of the welcome home

:06:42.:06:46.

there was a touch of romance. One sailor's long deployment ended with

:06:46.:06:56.
:06:56.:06:58.

a marriage proposal. Did you know? I didn't. What did she say? Yes.

:06:58.:07:02.

All these sailors will now get some well-earned shore leave, but many

:07:02.:07:06.

will soon be back at sea. You mentioned that the Navy is

:07:06.:07:09.

getting smaller - have you got any figures?

:07:09.:07:14.

The yes, I will give you some context. In 1982, before the

:07:14.:07:19.

Falklands war, their country had a total of 56 frigates and destroyers.

:07:19.:07:23.

That number will now come down to 19 frontline frigates and

:07:23.:07:28.

destroyers. NAD is also taking a big man power hit. By 2015, the

:07:28.:07:34.

size of the Navy will come down from 35,000 people to 30,000 people.

:07:34.:07:37.

The job of matching commitments to resources is going to become very

:07:37.:07:43.

tough. Fire crews in Portsmouth have been

:07:43.:07:47.

tackling high rise flat buyers today. It has been designed to beat

:07:47.:07:54.

as lifelike as possible. It follows the death of two firefighters 18

:07:54.:08:03.

months ago. -- have been practising tackling. This is an exercise to

:08:03.:08:07.

help train firefighters to tackle blazes that break out in a tower

:08:07.:08:12.

blocks. 35 firefighters were involved in today's exercise at an

:08:12.:08:16.

empty flat on the top of a high- rise block, which was filled with

:08:16.:08:20.

smoke to simulate a real-life fire. They had to rescue four people

:08:20.:08:25.

trapped inside before making the area safe. They are very difficult

:08:25.:08:29.

to train for. We need the buildings to be able to practise. That is

:08:29.:08:34.

what you have seen here today. fire safety is very high on our

:08:34.:08:40.

agenda at the moment, and our approach to fire safety in our high

:08:40.:08:44.

Rise Properties is very good. approach to fires in high-rise

:08:44.:08:50.

blocks has changed after two firefighters died at a fire in his

:08:50.:08:55.

tower block in Southampton last year. Now the focus is on keeping

:08:55.:09:00.

firefighters safe. So instead of three engines responding, five are

:09:00.:09:04.

sent to any fire in a high-rise block. And firefighters will no

:09:04.:09:08.

longer enter the flat that is on fire until all crews are there and

:09:08.:09:14.

back up is in place on stairwells and floors below. The incident last

:09:14.:09:22.

year raised some of the dangers of two firefighters -- the dangers to

:09:22.:09:26.

firefighters. They need to see the layout of them, see the water

:09:26.:09:31.

supplies, sea access. They need to familiarise themselves for how they

:09:32.:09:37.

would put the procedure in place in a specific building. A although

:09:37.:09:42.

today's was fake, fires like this are all too real, so crews want to

:09:42.:09:46.

make sure they are ready when they happen.

:09:46.:09:50.

Campaigners demonstrated outside an NHS meeting, demanding to know why

:09:50.:09:55.

a promise has not been kept for a new hospital in Littlehampton. They

:09:55.:09:57.

lobbied a meeting of the Sussex Cluster Primary Care Trust in

:09:57.:10:01.

Crawley. In response, NHS Sussex said it would talk with campaigners

:10:01.:10:07.

next week. Still to come this evening: A Roger

:10:08.:10:12.

has been enjoying Ed day out at the races.

:10:12.:10:18.

A glorious day at Goodwood, and we will focus on the racing.

:10:18.:10:23.

Particularly a special celebrity race. We have had a hot weather and

:10:23.:10:31.

the sunshine. But what about the weather in the next few days?

:10:31.:10:35.

Social workers in Southampton will extend their strike action for a

:10:35.:10:41.

further six days in August. Workers from adoption, fostering and the

:10:41.:10:43.

adolescent Ridett -- Resource Centre will walk out over pay cuts

:10:43.:10:48.

and the council's decision to pay only a limited number of workers a

:10:48.:10:52.

yearly supplement. It comes after its staff in child and adult

:10:52.:10:56.

safeguarding announced a one-day strike. The council says it will

:10:57.:11:01.

put children's welfare and whisk. The parking wardens in Reading are

:11:01.:11:06.

told to be more lenient with delivery drivers after shopkeepers

:11:06.:11:09.

complained it is hurting their business. They say lorries have

:11:09.:11:14.

been ticketed as they drop off or pick up goods. Shop owners say that

:11:14.:11:18.

changes to the town's traffic flow means they are suffering. The

:11:18.:11:25.

council says changes are part of a six-month trial. They will be there

:11:26.:11:31.

telling them off, booking them, and they have got quite funny with us,

:11:31.:11:35.

with the shop, as if it is our fault and it is not. We have had to

:11:35.:11:41.

talk them round, promising them that things will be sorted out.

:11:41.:11:45.

There is less than a year to go before the Olympic Games open in

:11:45.:11:49.

Britain and much of the talk in the build-up has been about the legacy

:11:49.:11:53.

the Games world leave. Will places like Weymouth and Portsmouth, homes

:11:53.:11:58.

of the sailing events, benefit in the long term? Seven years ago,

:11:59.:12:03.

Greece hosted the Olympics. Have they seen a lasting legacy? Simon

:12:03.:12:06.

Denison has been to Athens to find out.

:12:06.:12:12.

Olympic Athens then there, and the sailing centre now. Dorset is next

:12:12.:12:16.

to host events on the water, but Greece already knows what life can

:12:16.:12:21.

hold after the party moves on. Organisers admit the future of some

:12:21.:12:24.

venues was not properly thought through. The international

:12:24.:12:29.

spotlight is not enough to convince the mayor of the waterfront where

:12:29.:12:31.

the sailing took place. He questions whether the bid should

:12:31.:12:36.

have ever been put forward. TRANSLATION: We expressed our

:12:36.:12:41.

objections and were against hosting the Olympic Games in Athens in 2004,

:12:41.:12:46.

but now we feel the legacy has justified our argument. The things

:12:46.:12:50.

are really difficult and in my opinion, hosting the Olympic Games

:12:50.:12:54.

in 2004 did not benefit our country as much as it should have done.

:12:54.:12:59.

Organisers say the Syd T has the games to thank for a new airport. -

:12:59.:13:03.

- the city. Tens of millions of pounds have already been sent on --

:13:03.:13:08.

spent on doors at's transport network, but Athens is now

:13:08.:13:12.

discovering whether the Olympics is the gift that keeps on giving. The

:13:12.:13:18.

area close to the sailing centre saw an opportunity to grow its to

:13:18.:13:21.

foreign business year on year, as Dorset does now. -- tourism

:13:21.:13:31.
:13:31.:13:36.

The atmosphere was terrific before the Games. You believed that after

:13:36.:13:41.

the Olympics it would be good fantastic. But things went be

:13:41.:13:47.

downwards. People should not expect that the Olympic Games will it

:13:47.:13:51.

change their lives. I and afterwards? Some people will not

:13:51.:13:57.

benefit at all, some will have it as a very nice memory. Some other

:13:57.:14:01.

people who have managed to develop the business will be grateful to

:14:01.:14:11.

the Olympics. It there are -- there are bigger issues in Greece than

:14:11.:14:17.

whether the legacy of their Olympic Games is positive. But there are

:14:17.:14:24.

lessons for our part of the world as the Olympics fast approaches.

:14:24.:14:30.

Now, there has been some great horse racing today. Glorious

:14:30.:14:35.

Goodwood has continued and the weather is glorious. In all the

:14:36.:14:41.

this is that you were doing, did you manage to have a flutter today?

:14:42.:14:50.

As you are about to find out, I regretted the fact that I did not.

:14:50.:14:56.

I did not have the courage of my convictions. The evening's

:14:56.:15:02.

entertainment is under way. Plenty of punters still here. The feature

:15:02.:15:10.

race of the day was won by Frankie Dettori on the opinion poll. The

:15:10.:15:19.

sunshine today has been glorious. The first race was a celebrity race.

:15:19.:15:29.

:15:59.:16:05.

Good. I am not sure what resources are meant to feel like. It is a

:16:05.:16:15.
:16:15.:16:17.

nice horse. A you feeling good about it? Yes, but mostly noxious.

:16:17.:16:27.
:16:27.:16:36.

-- nauseous. By the end of the line, Delight for her trainer, who was

:16:36.:16:41.

watching on the big screen. She has done this properly. There was no

:16:41.:16:51.
:16:51.:16:56.

flouncing around him super -- around in super model load. I could

:16:56.:17:00.

not see what was going on, but it was good I think. This was a moment

:17:00.:17:08.

to remember. A grey day's racing. And they all did really well. Just

:17:08.:17:12.

like a couple of guys who have raised a lot of money for charity.

:17:39.:17:46.

we set out to achieve what we wanted it to achieve. A seven-mile

swimming, 60 miles running. Good news for Mark Ramprakash.

:17:55.:18:05.
:18:05.:18:15.

Tomorrow, we are going to Brighton. It is the eve of a huge favour

:18:15.:18:20.

Brighton and Hove Albion fans. Debbie everything they would see a

:18:20.:18:26.

view like this? They knew Amex's stadium will open on Saturday. We

:18:26.:18:31.

will be with one supporter who remembers the day of the Goldstone

:18:31.:18:35.

Ground and all the anguish when that went. Finally, he will see his

:18:35.:18:44.

beloved clop back home. People just cannot wait for this to arrive. Now

:18:44.:18:51.

that it has, and with what happened last season getting promoted, it is

:18:51.:19:01.
:19:01.:19:01.

a perfect, perfect launch for this stadium. A bright future for some,

for Brighton and Hove Albion. It is the 4th day of glorious Goodwood

:19:07.:19:17.
:19:17.:19:17.

tomorrow. We would get the weather forecast in just a moment. It looks

:19:17.:19:24.

fabulous! The discovery of sunken tanks off

:19:24.:19:27.

the south coast of England is posing a problem for the law

:19:27.:19:29.

surrounding shipwrecks. Archaeologists examining the debris

:19:29.:19:32.

from a D-Day landing craft for English Heritage say it needs

:19:32.:19:34.

better protection. The tank set off on June 5th 1944

:19:34.:19:37.

from Stokes Bay, but it sank along with the landing craft south of

:19:37.:19:42.

Selsey. It had been enroute to Juno Beach in Normandy for the D Day

:19:42.:19:45.

landings. The problem now is that because

:19:45.:19:48.

these are sunken tanks rather than a shipwreck, they are not covered

:19:48.:19:58.

by the law. Peter Henley explains. It is a snapshot of D-Day. Lying on

bring them to the surface. It is now like an artificial reef with

:21:39.:21:44.

lots of Madine life on it. It belongs there now. To protect the

:21:44.:21:49.

site, the trust now hopes to present a case study for using the

:21:49.:21:53.

same archaeological law that applies on land. It is not a war

a better day for Ladies' Day at Goodwood. Let's have a look at the

Plenty of sunshine around, but not so much as today. It will feel

:23:42.:23:51.

slightly cooler as well. The breeze in land will be slightly lighter

:23:51.:23:58.

and they may encourage for the showers. An odd isolated shower for

:23:58.:24:05.

the south. A fresh and light to come with lows of seven or eight

:24:05.:24:14.

Celsius. As we head into the weekend, Saturday looks promising.

:24:15.:24:20.

Initially cloudy, it will brighten up. Lots of sunshine to be had.

:24:20.:24:24.

Sunday is the warmer day of the two, but more cloud around. It is

:24:24.:24:30.

looking promising for Saturday as well offer of a Sunday -- as well

:24:30.:24:40.

as for Sunday. Next week is looking warm as well.

:24:40.:24:43.

It is going to be one of the hottest tickets in town come next

:24:43.:24:46.

year - who gets to carry the Olympic torch around the UK.

:24:46.:24:49.

Celebrities and sporting legends are often the faces we see holding

:24:49.:24:52.

the iconic torch as it makes its way to the Games. There will also

:24:52.:24:55.

be the chance for members of the public to be nominated and

:24:55.:24:58.

considered as torch bearers. And that's where this man comes in.

:24:58.:25:03.

This is Gordon Roberts. He's a well-known face in Bournemouth. And

:25:03.:25:05.

he has become something of an online sensation with thousands of

:25:05.:25:08.

people backing a campaign for him to carry the torch. Tom Hepworth

:25:08.:25:18.
:25:18.:25:22.

Trafalgar Square hosted a glitzy ceremony yesterday. But Gordon

:25:22.:25:31.

Roberts was not invited to, and he is not bothered. He can tell you

:25:31.:25:37.

the time he if you want even though he has not to watch. Half past 11.

:25:37.:25:42.

But today, he has gone global. He is at the centre of a Facebook

:25:42.:25:45.

campaign to carry their Olympic torch as it passes through

:25:45.:25:55.
:25:55.:25:57.

Bournemouth. What you think about it? I would just be the same.

:25:57.:26:07.
:26:07.:26:09.

will not let it affect you? No. as Gordon fit the bill? If I was

:26:09.:26:14.

honest, I think I would rather have somebody a little bit more

:26:14.:26:22.

deserving. I think it would be nice because he does not do any harm to

:26:22.:26:28.

anyone. It is not a joke, we are not exploiting them. The genuinely

:26:28.:26:34.

want him to be the torch-bearer. We have had comments on the group of

:26:34.:26:42.

people in London mentioning his name. The games at local organisers

:26:42.:26:51.

did not want to comment on Gordon's nomination. But Gordon has not made

:26:52.:26:58.

his mind up either. A I will have to think it over. If he does become

:26:58.:27:05.

the torch-bearer, you can count on one thing, he will not be late.

:27:05.:27:12.

Good luck to him. If you want to nominate somebody, have a look at

:27:12.:27:20.

our website. The details of the screen at now.
