Hello, I'm Sally Taylor. Welcome to South Today. In tonight's

:00:06.:00:09.

programme: Killed by a single bullet as he tried to defuse a bomb,

:00:09.:00:12.

the territorial who died in Afghanistan The hoaxer who caused

:00:12.:00:15.

airport disruption because of a row with his wife.

:00:15.:00:25.
:00:25.:00:26.

The dragon roars - the 1 billion ship making her home in Portsmouth.

:00:26.:00:33.

It is just awesome. He does what it says on the 10, fantastic. -- on

:00:33.:00:39.

the tin. And breaking down the barriers - bringing together all

:00:39.:00:42.

abilities in this Paralympic year. Disability doesn't mean you can't

:00:42.:00:51.

do something, you just maybe do it He went to diffuse a Taliban bomb

:00:51.:00:54.

but was killed by a single bullet. Territorial Army Sapper William

:00:54.:00:57.

Blanchard from Gosport in Hampshire died from the gunshot while serving

:00:57.:01:03.

in Helmand Province in Afghanistan. An inquest today heard that he was

:01:03.:01:08.

hit in the chest. And despite wearing body armour, the hearing

:01:08.:01:11.

was told that no armour could, or ever would, have been able to

:01:11.:01:19.

protect him. Mark Sanders was at today's inquest.

:01:19.:01:22.

At the inquest in Portsmouth the awful events of one day in

:01:22.:01:27.

Afghanistan were delivered. William Blanchard's widow and other members

:01:27.:01:31.

of his family heard how he was killed as he dealt with at bomb

:01:31.:01:38.

left by the Taliban. As he prepared to defuse the IED he was shot in

:01:38.:01:44.

the chest. His colleague told the inquest he heard a crack, a breeze

:01:44.:01:52.

and a flood and as he turned to look he saw William Blanchard fall.

:01:52.:01:55.

Other soldiers came under intense fire but William Blanchard was

:01:55.:01:59.

fatally wounded and there was nothing anyone could do to save him.

:01:59.:02:04.

It was the Territorial Army's soldier first tour of duty in

:02:04.:02:08.

Afghanistan. His work as a bomb disposal expert was a hero's job.

:02:08.:02:13.

The inquest was told he was wearing the latest body armour when he was

:02:13.:02:17.

shot. It was correctly made and fitted. The bullet went through the

:02:17.:02:24.

hem, six centimetres away from the hard plate. The coroner recorded a

:02:24.:02:28.

verdict of unlawful killing. He said he had been hit in a location

:02:28.:02:34.

that nobody, could or ever would be able to cover. After the inquest

:02:34.:02:39.

his family didn't want to comment but following his funeral last

:02:39.:02:43.

November a work colleague gave this could beat. During his training for

:02:43.:02:46.

his deployment in Afghanistan he went on long bike rides with his

:02:46.:02:50.

friends, cycle to the top of the hill to get their first then cycle

:02:50.:02:54.

back down to meet his friends and lead them to the top. A tremendous

:02:54.:02:59.

leader, caring, absolute professional. Very much missed.

:02:59.:03:03.

the inquest both the coroner and William Blanchard's family thanked

:03:03.:03:06.

the soldiers who were with him that day for everything they did to try

:03:06.:03:15.

to help. The MoD has confirmed the Royal

:03:15.:03:18.

Marine killed by a roadside bomb in Afghanistan yesterday was from

:03:18.:03:24.

Reading. Sergeant Garry Weston of 42 Commando was the father of three

:03:25.:03:29.

daughters and died whilst leading a foot patrol in Helmand province. He

:03:29.:03:33.

was 40 years old. Dorset Police are investigating

:03:33.:03:36.

reports of "souvenir hunting" following a fatal Red Arrows jet

:03:36.:03:39.

crash in Bournemouth. Flight Lieutenant Jon Egging, who was 33,

:03:39.:03:42.

died when his Hawk T1 aircraft crashed into a field near the

:03:42.:03:46.

village of Throop, south of Bournemouth Airport. These shots,

:03:46.:03:51.

taken on the day itself show the extent of the debris on site.

:03:51.:03:55.

Accident investigators spent days at the scene clearing the wreckage.

:03:55.:03:58.

Police have received two reports of people collecting wreckage, and say

:03:58.:04:05.

anyone found to be doing so would be committing theft.

:04:05.:04:08.

HMS Dragon, the newest Type 45 destroyer, has been formally handed

:04:08.:04:15.

over to the Royal Navy. She's the fourth Type 45 to be built. All six

:04:15.:04:19.

will be based in Portsmouth. The first steel was cut for Dragon six

:04:19.:04:23.

years ago. She was launched in 2008, before having her systems fitted

:04:23.:04:28.

and undergoing extensive sea trials. The 1 billion ship left Scotland

:04:28.:04:32.

at the weekend, before arriving at Portsmouth naval base this morning.

:04:32.:04:42.

Our reporter Chris Coneybeer was there to meet her.

:04:42.:04:46.

With the big red dragon on it back in Avis newest warship arrives at

:04:46.:04:52.

his home base. -- the Navy's newest warship. She is an air defence

:04:52.:04:57.

warship with formidable power. The it has 14 micelles and his radar

:04:57.:05:02.

can spot missiles 200 miles away. It can track and hit an object the

:05:02.:05:06.

size of a cricket ball travelling at three times the speed of sound.

:05:06.:05:11.

Absolutely amazing. I have come from a type 42 background. To come

:05:11.:05:16.

on to something like this, it is awesome. It does what it says on

:05:16.:05:22.

the tin, fantastic. This afternoon my name be formally accepted

:05:22.:05:26.

delivery from its builders, BAE Systems -- the Navy. The crew moved

:05:26.:05:33.

in. She is in top class condition. An excellent job by BAE Systems and

:05:33.:05:39.

the company. The build project has gone very well, on time. Below deck

:05:39.:05:46.

our cabins for the croute. The galley will work around the clock.

:05:46.:05:51.

The main control room is where the ship will track and target aircraft.

:05:51.:05:55.

From the bridge there is a clear view of HMS Victory, a reminder of

:05:55.:06:00.

all that has gone before. The Navy originally wanted 12 of these chips

:06:00.:06:07.

but as costs rose that was reduced to half a dozen. -- ships. How much

:06:07.:06:12.

do we actually need them? It was commissioned some years ago when

:06:12.:06:16.

times were not so austere, but it will still represent good value for

:06:16.:06:20.

money. This is absolutely state-of- the-art technology, the best of his

:06:20.:06:27.

class anywhere in the world, and we will put it to very good use. Or

:06:27.:06:30.

the there is a slight note of controversy concerning the Big Red

:06:30.:06:35.

Dragon. It is supposed to be a temporary a dormant but some of the

:06:35.:06:39.

people aboard have become fond of it and would like to stay. --

:06:39.:06:49.
:06:49.:06:56.

adornment. The Navy has yet to be persuaded.

:06:56.:07:00.

Dorset helicopters have been grounded following an aircraft

:07:00.:07:06.

crash. Coastguards say rescue capability would be unaffected.

:07:06.:07:10.

A 31-year-old man from Bognor Regis has admitted causing a bomb hoax to

:07:10.:07:13.

stop his wife leaving the country. Kevin Flynn told police the bomb

:07:13.:07:16.

was being taken onboard a plane heading to America from Heathrow or

:07:16.:07:18.

Gatwick. Danielle Glavin was at Worthing Magistrates' Court and has

:07:18.:07:26.

this report. He Kevin Flynn had from our camera

:07:26.:07:31.

outside court today. At the hearing he admitted the hoax call. He was

:07:31.:07:36.

angry, his wife had allegedly damaged his flat and was leaving

:07:36.:07:41.

the country. He wanted her stop. He came over to Bognor Regis station

:07:41.:07:45.

to use the telephones here. He called Sussex Police and gave them

:07:45.:07:49.

his wife's name and said she was flying to America and that she had

:07:49.:07:55.

a bomb in her back. The call came on 31st July, during the holiday

:07:55.:08:02.

season. Sussex Police were told it was either Heathrow or Gatwick. She

:08:02.:08:07.

was found and arrested, her flight disrupted. One expert believes Mr

:08:07.:08:12.

Flynn should be made an example of last hoaxes cost money. Hundred and

:08:12.:08:15.

15 billion worth of income is generated just on tourism for the

:08:15.:08:21.

United Kingdom -- 115 billion. If that is under threat they hit

:08:21.:08:24.

financially from many people in the tourist business could be profound.

:08:24.:08:29.

His wife wasn't in court to hear the police. She is still out of the

:08:29.:08:34.

country. He was released on bail until sentencing in October. He

:08:34.:08:38.

only spoke in court to confirm his details and enter his guilty plea.

:08:38.:08:44.

The case has been referred on to a crime court for sentencing as

:08:44.:08:46.

magistrates' courts have limited powers and it is said the parish it

:08:46.:08:56.
:08:56.:08:56.

has to be a deterrent. -- punishment.

:08:56.:08:59.

A 100 million to the Dorset high street is beginning to take shape.

:08:59.:09:02.

The company behind the complex of shops and homes in Dorchester says

:09:02.:09:06.

it's the biggest new development of its kind in the South West. Our

:09:06.:09:07.

Dorset reporter Simon Clemison has more.

:09:07.:09:11.

It is something of an urban skyline for rural Dorset, cranes don't

:09:11.:09:16.

usually tower above the trees here. After a short setback as

:09:17.:09:22.

constructors suffered in the downturn the next phase is

:09:22.:09:27.

beginning to emerge -- contractors. There will be shops, restaurants, a

:09:27.:09:33.

cinema and arts centre where once they brewed beer. It comprises 30

:09:33.:09:39.

buildings over 11.5 acres. It is unusual to find a county town which

:09:39.:09:43.

doesn't have the ingredients we are putting in. It is very good for

:09:43.:09:48.

Dorchester. Why have they get on with it. It would be nice if we get

:09:48.:09:52.

the new arts centre as well as the shops. You hear people saying they

:09:52.:09:55.

will never work, where all the investment come but it seems to be

:09:55.:09:59.

on the move. There have been a brewery on this site since 1880. It

:09:59.:10:04.

was finally sold about 10 years ago. Some of the old buildings will form

:10:04.:10:08.

part of the new complex. It is already bringing in buyers and

:10:08.:10:11.

businesses, not a live from the local area but around the globe.

:10:11.:10:14.

What about the wider economic impact?

:10:14.:10:19.

There will always be a bit of concern but frankly compared to the

:10:19.:10:24.

big out-of-town drop-in centre something which is really part of

:10:24.:10:28.

Dorchester has to be a good thing, it will bring more large retail

:10:28.:10:32.

names to the area which will increase the retail offering.

:10:32.:10:38.

economy is heavily dependent on the hospitality, leisure and tourism

:10:38.:10:42.

sectors and retail is an important adjunct to that. * Local economy

:10:42.:10:46.

can sometimes look out on a different horizon. Stashed the

:10:46.:10:55.

local economy. -- the local economy. Police are trying to trace a man

:10:55.:10:57.

who threatened security guards with a sledgehammer before making off

:10:57.:11:01.

with a large amount of money from a cash machine in Hedge End.

:11:01.:11:03.

Hampshire Police have released this CCTV footage taken just after the

:11:03.:11:07.

attack in the hope someone may know who the masked man is. He escaped

:11:07.:11:10.

from the scene in a white BMW shortly after midnight on Wednesday

:11:10.:11:13.

13th July. Officers also want to speak to a cyclist who they believe

:11:13.:11:19.

was nearby when the crime took place. This was a planned attack.

:11:19.:11:22.

The offenders would have been in hedge End looking at the building

:11:22.:11:28.

before doing the attack. The staff work reloading the ATM machines

:11:28.:11:32.

inside the foyer of the Nationwide Building Society and at that point

:11:32.:11:37.

a man with a balaclava on smashed his way through the door, using a

:11:37.:11:41.

sledgehammer, using extreme forced to do so, and taking three

:11:41.:11:47.

cassettes from the security men. After losing her mast in the Round

:11:47.:11:49.

The Island race back in June, Sir Francis Chichester's yacht, Gispy

:11:49.:11:52.

Moth Four, returned to the water today. The new mizzen mast was

:11:52.:11:54.

refitted at Swanwick Marina in Hampshire. Our reporter Sarah

:11:55.:12:00.

Holmes was there to watch. With great precision and extreme

:12:00.:12:05.

care the new mast was lowered. Once secured there were sighs of relief

:12:05.:12:10.

all round. Great to see the mast back in and restored to how she

:12:10.:12:14.

should be again. Go to come out in the nice weather once the boat has

:12:14.:12:18.

been done up and get sailing on something I have worked so hard to

:12:18.:12:27.

try and get back on the water. -- good to come out. Gipsy moth first

:12:27.:12:31.

set sail in 1967 when Sir Francis Chichester broke a number of

:12:31.:12:34.

records sailing single-handedly around the world inspiring a

:12:34.:12:38.

generation of sailors. The UK Sailing Academy says she is an

:12:38.:12:43.

invaluable part of maritime history. It is important that is preserved

:12:43.:12:47.

to remember what it was he achieved. We are hoping to keep the boat in

:12:47.:12:51.

one piece and provide opportunities for the young people we work with.

:12:51.:12:54.

The yacht will be at the Southampton Boat Show next month

:12:54.:12:59.

whether public will get a chance to see it back in action. -- where the

:12:59.:13:03.

public. Still to come in this evening's South Today: Tony Husband

:13:03.:13:10.

has taken to the water. The world's top canoeists are at

:13:10.:13:14.

Eton Dorney for an Olympic test event.

:13:14.:13:17.

One of the New Forest's most famous attractions will feature in a live

:13:17.:13:20.

television broadcast in less than an hour's time. The National Motor

:13:20.:13:23.

Museum is celebrating 125 years of the motor car, which ties in nicely

:13:23.:13:29.

with tonight's edition of National Treasures. The show on BBC1 will

:13:29.:13:32.

see Dan Snow and Sian Williams mark the motoring milestone by looking

:13:32.:13:35.

back through the years at a number of vehicles from the museum's

:13:35.:13:44.

collection. I have spent the day here at the

:13:44.:13:49.

Beaulieu Motor Museum, an extraordinary connection --

:13:49.:13:54.

collection out in front of the house. Everybody has got a

:13:54.:13:59.

favourite. Very special for me in particular because I grow up

:13:59.:14:03.

swimming and sailing on the Beaulieu reservoir and recently I

:14:03.:14:08.

have become a homeowner in this area so this is my own backyard, a

:14:08.:14:12.

piece of local history. And you can see Dan with Sian Williams at the

:14:12.:14:15.

Beaulieu National Motor museum on National Treasures tonight, on BBC1

:14:15.:14:18.

at half past seven. With a year to go to the

:14:18.:14:22.

Paralympics, we're looking at the challenges of integration. A local

:14:22.:14:24.

charity encourages disabled and able bodied individuals to take

:14:24.:14:27.

part in sports together and hopes the Paralympics will help break

:14:27.:14:31.

some of the barriers there may be around participation. Reham Khan

:14:31.:14:40.

reports. A very remembered in the life of

:14:40.:14:44.

James Smith and his mother. James is severely autistic and usually

:14:44.:14:48.

has great difficulty showing his emotions. He is one of twins born

:14:48.:14:53.

10 winks prematurely. James suffered two brain haemorrhages and

:14:53.:14:58.

has profound cerebral palsy as well as autism. It is difficult for our

:14:58.:15:02.

children to do things with their peers, getting out and about as a

:15:02.:15:06.

group is difficult. Here at Langside School able-bodied

:15:06.:15:09.

children play alongside disabled youngsters to encourage integration

:15:09.:15:15.

from an early age of. The school is fantastic. They have an inclusion

:15:15.:15:18.

programme and a partner with seven different schools and playgroups

:15:18.:15:22.

and the children come in and spend time with our children and just be

:15:22.:15:26.

a teenager, not a child with a disability. Langside is run by a

:15:26.:15:33.

Dorset charity. We enable children to embrace their childhood.

:15:33.:15:36.

Wherever we can we do that in partnership with others so we can

:15:36.:15:40.

break down some of the barriers that might exist. Nicholas Turner

:15:40.:15:44.

is a volunteer. He got involved three meeting a student from one

:15:44.:15:48.

side to visited his school. I knew how much he enjoyed it and how much

:15:48.:15:52.

of the difference it made and I wanted to come here and experience

:15:52.:15:58.

first hand what it is like. combined sports day and said last

:15:58.:16:04.

month, one of many ways everybody has fun together. For James and

:16:04.:16:08.

Sadie this moment is proof that Langside's approach works and that

:16:08.:16:12.

the barriers can be broken down and that is exactly the mission for

:16:13.:16:19.

next year's parish -- Paralympics. Clearly had a grey day at the

:16:19.:16:25.

school. -- great day. Ade Adepitan was in the British wheelchair

:16:25.:16:29.

basketball team at the Paralympic Games in Athens in 2004 which won a

:16:29.:16:32.

bronze medal, and he joins me from our London studio. We know him so

:16:32.:16:34.

well from sports commentating. Is it terribly difficult to get

:16:34.:16:41.

schemes like this up and running? As opposed what you need is the

:16:41.:16:47.

impetus. -- I suppose what you need. You need people to provide the

:16:47.:16:51.

money and get the scheme's running, but it is really important around

:16:51.:16:58.

the country that we try to integrate disability sports with

:16:58.:17:04.

able bodied clubs is well and in schools as well. He is the age of

:17:04.:17:08.

the important thing? Starting at a young age so doesn't seem strange

:17:08.:17:13.

to certain people? Yes. It is important. I don't understand why

:17:13.:17:17.

he should be such a big deal to integrate kids with disabilities,

:17:18.:17:22.

to get them to play sport with able-bodied kids. I had a lot of

:17:23.:17:25.

opportunities to travel round the country and I have seen many

:17:25.:17:31.

schools that are trying to find ways to get kids playing wheelchair

:17:31.:17:35.

basketball and play at the Paralympic sports. It is down to

:17:35.:17:42.

whether there is a good teacher who has been coached in Paralympic

:17:42.:17:46.

sports. If we look ahead to the legacy,

:17:46.:17:51.

this word has come up so many times, the legacy of the Paralympics, the

:17:51.:17:56.

focus on disability and sport in particular, do you think it will

:17:56.:18:02.

become more mainstream? I think it is already becoming more mainstream.

:18:02.:18:08.

If I think back to when I began and started trying to compete at

:18:08.:18:13.

Paralympic sports, festival I didn't know that Paralympic sport

:18:13.:18:17.

existed. -- first of all. I didn't know it was possible to play

:18:17.:18:20.

wheelchair basketball in the 80s. Over the years gradually you have

:18:21.:18:26.

seen the profile increase, the Paralympics are getting more air

:18:26.:18:30.

time on television, and next year it will be bigger than ever before.

:18:30.:18:34.

We are at the forefront in the UK. We are ahead of a lot of countries

:18:34.:18:40.

in the way we increase the profile. You are a fantastic ambassador,

:18:40.:18:50.

thank you so much for joining us. It is really just around the corner.

:18:50.:18:57.

A lot of venues are testing what is going to happen, trying it all out.

:18:57.:19:02.

Tony has been to one today. We have talked a lot about test

:19:02.:19:07.

events. We've already had the Olympic sailing test event in

:19:07.:19:09.

Dorset and Dorney Lake in the Thames Valley hosted the rowing

:19:09.:19:12.

dress rehearsal recently. But that venue will also stage the flat

:19:13.:19:15.

water canoeing events, and they'll take centre stage over the next few

:19:16.:19:20.

days, as Dorney plays host to their pre-Olympic event. Tony Husband has

:19:20.:19:29.

been out on the water there today. This isn't just an Olympic test

:19:29.:19:33.

event. It is a significant moment for Canniffe printing and kayaking

:19:33.:19:38.

in Britain, the first international spent competition here for 30 years

:19:38.:19:45.

but at its heart is getting things right for 2012 -- canoe sprinting.

:19:45.:19:49.

We are testing the work force, the volunteers, the technical officials.

:19:49.:19:52.

You can only put them under the real test if you have the athletes

:19:52.:19:57.

because they will behave in the way they will behave in 10 months.

:19:57.:20:02.

the athletes who live locally it is a different experience. It is

:20:02.:20:08.

really cool to see so many people are who have come over to our lake,

:20:08.:20:11.

like having people coming to your own home, you wanted to be nice and

:20:11.:20:16.

tidy. You get what anybody to beat you vigneron house, so we will be

:20:16.:20:20.

ready, the weekend. -- you don't want anybody to beat you in your

:20:20.:20:24.

own house. For athletes from 32 countries will be getting a taste

:20:24.:20:30.

of what it will be like in London 2012. The water is not too cold

:20:30.:20:34.

Gradually we did see some breaks developing -- conquer. -- cloud. We

started with a blanket of cloud across the south, seeing some

brighter conditions developing as the afternoon drew on. A pretty

decent end to the day. Some evening sunshine for many of us. Thicker

cloud to the far north of our region. Most of us stay dry. We

:26:03.:26:08.

will see the odd light shower in the West. Possibly the odd bolt of

lightning. There will be clear spells. To start the day tomorrow,

:26:21.:26:25.

may be some mist first thing but some good, sunny spells. We should

see a little bit more in a way of brightness. Some cloud in the sky.

better. The warmest and brightest day of the week. It's good sunshine

in store. Temperatures up into the mid- twenties. The area of high
