Good evening from South Today. In tonight's programme: On trial. The

:00:07.:00:13.

man accused of raping two women and sexually assaulting another.

:00:13.:00:16.

Festive disruption. Not the Christmas gift that rail passengers

:00:16.:00:22.

in Reading were hoping for. More than window-shopping. A 24-

:00:22.:00:27.

hour virtual shop but is it a smart idea?

:00:27.:00:32.

And the sound of water music. The composer searching for his sacred

:00:32.:00:42.
:00:42.:00:48.

space. The evidence of a man accused of

:00:48.:00:53.

being a serial rapist has been dismissed as a pack of lies by the

:00:53.:00:56.

prosecution. Michal Tejkowski, who arrived in the UK from Poland last

:00:56.:01:00.

October, is charged with raping two women in Brighton and sexually

:01:00.:01:04.

assaulting a pensioner. He denies attacking any of the women. Our

:01:04.:01:10.

reporter was in court. The prosecution says Michal

:01:10.:01:14.

Tejkowski is a predatory serial rapist who attacked three

:01:14.:01:19.

vulnerable women. The first, it is alleged, was a 17-year-old A-level

:01:19.:01:23.

student in Britain. It is claimed on a February night, he tried to

:01:23.:01:27.

from the street into this park and raped her. Michal Tejkowski's

:01:27.:01:31.

version is that he approached the teenager, who he did not know, and

:01:31.:01:36.

asked her to have sex with him. He claimed in court she replied, yes.

:01:36.:01:40.

They had consensual sex. He was pressed repeatedly by the

:01:40.:01:43.

prosecution during cross- examination. They dismissed his

:01:43.:01:47.

evidence of a pack of lies. The prosecutors said, you targeted her

:01:47.:01:52.

because she was a woman in a quiet and dark location. You attacked her.

:01:52.:01:57.

Brutally raped her up for your own sexual gratification. The defendant

:01:57.:02:01.

replied, no, it is not true. About one month after that attack, Michal

:02:01.:02:06.

Tejkowski is accused of raping a woman in this supermarket car park

:02:06.:02:11.

off this road. She was working as a prostitute. The defendant told the

:02:11.:02:16.

jury she approached him for sex. He claimed that no 0.9 did she say she

:02:16.:02:20.

did not consent. Again, the prosecution rejected this version

:02:20.:02:25.

of events. The court has heard in May Michal Tejkowski sexually

:02:25.:02:31.

assaulted a pensioner at a park in Maidstone. He told the jury if he

:02:31.:02:35.

was not in the park that day. The jury has already seen a video of

:02:35.:02:39.

her of the 67-year-old woman picking him out in an identity

:02:39.:02:45.

parade. Michal Tejkowski denies all the charges against him. The case

:02:45.:02:48.

continues. Our reporter is in a Brighton

:02:48.:02:52.

studio. Tell us what happens next. We are expecting the case to be

:02:52.:02:56.

summed up by the defence, prosecution and by the judge and

:02:56.:03:01.

jury is due to consider five counts. They are expected to go out to

:03:01.:03:05.

consider their verdict on Thursday. Closing his cross-examination, the

:03:05.:03:09.

prosecutor suggested to Michal Tejkowski that he was a very

:03:09.:03:14.

dangerous young man. The defendant replied, no, I am not a dangerous

:03:14.:03:18.

man. Two men have been questioned by

:03:18.:03:22.

police in Southampton following the death of a seven-year-old boy in

:03:22.:03:26.

the Shirley area of the city. The child was taken to hospital with

:03:26.:03:29.

serious head injuries from address in Cromarty Road on Saturday

:03:29.:03:34.

evening. He died the following day. The main question are both in their

:03:34.:03:37.

20s and have been released on police bail.

:03:37.:03:41.

A pre-Christmas blitz on drink driving in Hampshire on the Isle of

:03:41.:03:45.

Wight has seen more than 40 people arrested in four days. The campaign

:03:45.:03:51.

was launched on 1st December, aimed at targeting drink and drug drivers.

:03:51.:03:55.

Over the four days, more than 300 breath-tests were carried out.

:03:55.:03:58.

Three-quarters arrested have been charged.

:03:58.:04:02.

East and West Sussex Fire and Rescue Services are to merge

:04:02.:04:05.

control rooms to save money. The new centre could take emergency

:04:05.:04:11.

calls from across the county from September 2013. 3.6 million from

:04:11.:04:14.

the Department of Communities and Local Government will be used to

:04:15.:04:19.

pay for the move. East Sussex Fire Service said it will help them as

:04:19.:04:22.

on more quickly to emergency calls whilst cutting costs.

:04:22.:04:26.

A scientist has told a court he think it is unlikely that lumps of

:04:26.:04:30.

palm oil that washed up in beaches on the south came from a tanker

:04:30.:04:34.

anchored off the Isle of Wight. He was giving evidence for the owners

:04:35.:04:39.

of the tanker who have been accused of illegally dumping palm oil into

:04:39.:04:42.

the sea, triggering a pollution alert.

:04:42.:04:45.

Today's evidence centred on the chemical make-up of the bright

:04:45.:04:50.

yellow lumps of palm oil that were washed up on beaches in Hampshire

:04:50.:04:54.

in January this year. The prosecution allege the material

:04:54.:05:00.

came from this tanker, which had recently discharged its cargo of

:05:00.:05:05.

palm oil and had sailed to an Anchorage off the Isle of Wight.

:05:05.:05:09.

The court heard there were differences in the levels of

:05:09.:05:14.

hydrocarbons between the lumps of palm oil found on the beaches and

:05:14.:05:19.

samples taken from the ship. Defence expert witness, a

:05:19.:05:23.

biochemist, said he thought it was unlikely the lumps of palm oil

:05:23.:05:27.

found on the beach had come from the ship. The prosecution as

:05:27.:05:32.

question that conclusion, pointing out to the palm oil on the ship had

:05:32.:05:36.

come from a variety of sources if in Indonesia and Malaysia and was

:05:36.:05:42.

stored in different tanks on board. Earlier, the captain from the

:05:42.:05:46.

coastguard and Maritime Agency told the court he had found lumps of

:05:46.:05:50.

palm oil on the tanker's Dec 20 carried out an inspection. The

:05:50.:05:55.

tanker had been turned away from the oil refinery. That was because

:05:55.:05:59.

of the condition of the debt and because there was solidified palm

:05:59.:06:06.

oil in some of the pipes. -- deck. The owners of the tanker and denied

:06:06.:06:11.

making a discharge of palm oil into the sea in contravention of marine

:06:11.:06:18.

pollution regulations. The trial continues ills. -- continues.

:06:19.:06:23.

The Gosport MP woman back has again called for the Government to honour

:06:23.:06:29.

the veterans of the Arctic Convoys with a special medal. It has been a

:06:29.:06:33.

long running campaign to get recognition for the 66,000 men who

:06:33.:06:37.

braved the Arctic Circle during the Second World War to keep the supply

:06:37.:06:42.

lines to Russia open. The MP for Gosport said it is a disgrace that

:06:42.:06:46.

200 veterans, who are still alive, have not been honoured. Big is the

:06:46.:06:51.

only major sea campaign of will walk not to be awarded a special

:06:51.:06:58.

medal. -- campaign of the war. understand everybody hides behind

:06:58.:07:01.

residents. There is another criteria that should take priority.

:07:01.:07:06.

This is the right thing to do. These men are not politicians. At

:07:06.:07:10.

their age they should not have to fight for justice. It appals me

:07:10.:07:15.

that people who gave so much to ensure the freedoms we take on a

:07:15.:07:18.

daily basis for granted should have to beg for the recognition that

:07:18.:07:21.

they deserve. Caroline Dinenage. It is a case of

:07:21.:07:25.

deja vu for rail users in Reading this Christmas. Passengers are

:07:25.:07:29.

being warned to expect disruption over the festive season as the next

:07:29.:07:33.

phase of Reading station's upgrade takes place. Last year, the work

:07:33.:07:39.

caused problems for rail users as a new bridge was installed. This year,

:07:39.:07:44.

another bridge will be put in place at Cow Lane on Boxing Day.

:07:44.:07:49.

It has become part of the festive calendar but just in case anyone

:07:49.:07:53.

had forgotten, passengers were being told today that Christmas in

:07:53.:07:58.

Reading means the arrival of not a man in a red suit but hundreds in

:07:58.:08:02.

orange safety gear. The biggest impact will be felled just down the

:08:02.:08:08.

tracks here. We are working on both narrow bridges at Cow Lane and this

:08:08.:08:13.

Christmas we will be replacing one of the bridges with a new 1,600

:08:13.:08:17.

tonne bridge. It will be wheeled into place on Boxing Day. A similar

:08:17.:08:21.

operation last year it saw this bridge replaced. This year's work

:08:21.:08:26.

is also expected to cause disruption but the new bridge

:08:26.:08:30.

promises to ease one of the town's most notorious bottlenecks. A rail

:08:30.:08:40.
:08:40.:08:41.

bottleneck will begin as this new platform is constructed. This is a

:08:41.:08:48.

platform alteration. Will this confused commuters? The rail work

:08:48.:08:53.

had not. Someone said if someone is on autopilot, no-one will notice

:08:53.:08:58.

the stoppage is just the numbers of the platforms that are changing.

:08:58.:09:04.

That could be important. As Reading station gears up for a one of

:09:04.:09:08.

influx of travellers in 2012. With its proximity to the Olympic rowing

:09:08.:09:12.

site and on route to the Weymouth rowing event, Reading will be at

:09:12.:09:16.

the centre of people's travel plans next year for the Olympic Games.

:09:16.:09:21.

The revamping of the station, that will still be very much a work in

:09:21.:09:28.

progress. BBC South has learned a Chief

:09:28.:09:32.

Executive of the Royal Berkshire Hospital has taken indefinite

:09:32.:09:37.

annual leave and may not return. A Donald took up the post in 2009 but

:09:37.:09:40.

sources say he made a series of unpopular decisions over the years,

:09:40.:09:45.

including restructuring the way key parts of the hospital are run. The

:09:45.:09:49.

Chief Medical Officer -- of Sir has taken over the running while Ed

:09:49.:09:52.

Donald is on leave. He was not available for comment.

:09:52.:09:57.

The public inquiry into the future of the old Weymouth fire station is

:09:57.:10:00.

underway. Developers want to knock it down and build retirement

:10:00.:10:04.

apartments. If the fire station needs the money from the sale of

:10:04.:10:08.

the land so it can fund a road safety education centre. Some

:10:08.:10:13.

residents say the apartments would run in the skyline. British ships

:10:13.:10:17.

have been given the Government's position to protect themselves from

:10:17.:10:21.

pirates with armed guards. The move comes after is significant increase

:10:21.:10:27.

in the number of attacks against vessels in places like the Indian

:10:27.:10:32.

Ocean. The guidance, published by the Department of Transport,

:10:32.:10:35.

stresses Home Office permission will still be needed before

:10:35.:10:43.

security guards can be deployed. Still to come: Is the cold weather

:10:43.:10:47.

here to stay? We will have on the weather.

:10:47.:10:53.

We will also have the sport, including the marathon dream of the

:10:53.:10:57.

Long Distance runner and is looking for others to join him on a relay

:10:57.:11:06.

around Great Britain. West Sussex County Council is

:11:06.:11:09.

spending 50 million in an effort to kick-start the local economy.

:11:09.:11:13.

The decision to spend some of the money up grading the Chichester

:11:13.:11:16.

Festival Theatre has been criticised by people whose bus

:11:16.:11:24.

services are being lost due to cutbacks in Council subsidies.

:11:24.:11:29.

Rita and Glenn are catching the 86 bus to go Christmas shopping. Next

:11:29.:11:35.

year, the route is said to be axed as part of the council's 2 million

:11:35.:11:41.

cut back. It will be awful. A lot of lives will be disrupted. School

:11:41.:11:45.

children, especially. Now the villagers have been further angered

:11:45.:11:50.

by the council's announcement of a 50 million spending package,

:11:50.:11:53.

including improvements to the Chichester Festival Theatre. They

:11:53.:11:58.

should be focusing on the essential things. We have a theatre and a

:11:58.:12:02.

theatre in Horsham. You need to promote them and keep them going,

:12:02.:12:07.

you do not need to spend that amount of money at the moment when

:12:07.:12:11.

you cannot get people from eight to be. The council will contribute 1

:12:11.:12:15.

million towards a 22 million improvement to Chichester Festival

:12:15.:12:19.

Theatre. They say it will help boost tourism. The council says

:12:19.:12:22.

government rules means its 50 million spending package cannot be

:12:22.:12:28.

used to fund buses or social care budgets. We are investing capital

:12:28.:12:32.

in our infrastructure, not in revenue spending, which is

:12:32.:12:38.

frontline services like buses. you cannot use this money? No. We

:12:38.:12:43.

can use this money to boost jobs in West Sussex, Bruce the

:12:43.:12:49.

infrastructure, and improve the foot-fault for shops. -- boost the

:12:49.:12:53.

infrastructure. The Lib Dems support some of the measures such

:12:53.:12:58.

as making homes more energy efficient. We believe not enough is

:12:58.:13:03.

being spent on the most deprived seaside towns. The highest

:13:03.:13:08.

incidence of youth unemployment have are all along the coast.

:13:08.:13:14.

Although some money is propose four Bognor Regis, there has not a lot

:13:14.:13:20.

for other places, such as areas where people have difficulties.

:13:20.:13:24.

Rita and Glenn are just hoping 60,000 can be found to save their

:13:24.:13:34.
:13:34.:13:35.

bus service before it comes to the The an increase in the number of

:13:36.:13:40.

animals abandoned because of the recession is putting pressure on

:13:40.:13:43.

animal welfare charities in the south. ABC Animal Sanctuary near

:13:46.:13:54.

running costs. -- Paul Bray. The newest residents at ABC Animal

Alexandra has been running the centre for 30 years. This is the

:14:02.:14:08.

busiest she has ever seen it. up at 7:30am, and finished the e-

:14:08.:14:14.

mails about midnight. There can be 30 requests asking for us to taking

:14:14.:14:20.

ponies, pigs, everything, across the spectrum, but everything is

:14:20.:14:24.

finding -- everyone is finding hard. It is staffed entirely by

:14:24.:14:29.

volunteers but it costs 1,000 per week to run. Not all abandoned

:14:29.:14:34.

animals are as lucky as these. you turn away at an animal and you

:14:34.:14:39.

know it will be put down, it is hard.

:14:39.:14:43.

It is not just smaller charities that are struggling. Last year in

:14:44.:14:49.

the south almost 9,000 animals were left by their owners. The RSPCA

:14:49.:14:54.

says its costs are spiralling. are seeing a steady level of lots

:14:54.:14:59.

of animals being abandoned, tied to Gates, dumped in fields. It is a

:14:59.:15:04.

great strain on us and other charities, people think we have got

:15:04.:15:09.

lots of money, and that it doesn't hurt us. I am afraid these things

:15:09.:15:14.

are all relative. Smaller charities, larger charities, all feel these

:15:14.:15:18.

difficulties in a similar way. Some of these piglets already have

:15:18.:15:26.

a new home to go to and the hope is all of them will find a family soon.

:15:26.:15:30.

Difficult times for Animal Welfare Charities at the moment.

:15:30.:15:34.

People in Berkshire are being urged to use less water because of the

:15:34.:15:38.

strain on the River Kennet. Thames Water has started Britain's first

:15:38.:15:43.

awareness campaign in preparation for a possible drought next summer.

:15:43.:15:46.

Rainfall in 80 of the last 20 months has been below average in

:15:46.:15:52.

the area and levels in the river are low -- 18. If you ever wanted

:15:52.:15:57.

to buy something after the shops have shut, of course, you can be an

:15:57.:16:02.

on line dropper but there is another choice, using a smart phone.

:16:02.:16:06.

-- shopper. A store in Britain has become the first to launch the new

:16:06.:16:10.

idea which will enable late night and early bird shoppers to do more

:16:10.:16:19.

than just window-shop. Apples, Vanish, I don't need water

:16:19.:16:29.
:16:29.:16:32.

chestnuts. That can go off the list, what next? Laptop. It is not a

:16:32.:16:37.

traditional Christmas window display, but every space is being

:16:37.:16:43.

maximised to boost sales. This Waitrose in Brighton is the first

:16:43.:16:46.

to have a win best bit -- display showing joyless product. If you

:16:46.:16:51.

have the right facility on your phone you can scan the sky black --

:16:52.:16:57.

square and buy it. It is being described as a 24 hour virtual shop

:16:57.:17:00.

but it is a month real shops and you collect your items the

:17:00.:17:04.

following day. It saves a long journey to John Lewes. The nearest

:17:04.:17:10.

ones are in Southampton and London. They say the service is proving

:17:10.:17:18.

popular. People I spoke to didn't seem to get it. Do you use these

:17:18.:17:25.

codes to do your shopping? I have no idea, what is it? The little

:17:25.:17:31.

box? Not many people know what it is for all had to use it.

:17:31.:17:35.

This is just a trial and will disappear after Christmas, which

:17:35.:17:40.

may come as a disappointment to those hoping to hit January sales

:17:40.:17:48.

whilst grocery shopping. Window-shopping with a difference.

:17:48.:17:52.

The historic World War II submarine HMS Alliance has been chosen as a

:17:52.:17:56.

location for a new project by composer Marvin Ayres. The idea

:17:56.:18:02.

behind sacred spaces is to capture the sonnet spirit of a place. --

:18:02.:18:07.

behind Sacred Spaces. He uses the cello, violin and viola to create

:18:07.:18:14.

the piece. Cold and a little on the small side,

:18:14.:18:19.

the engine room of HMS Alliance is not the typical venue for composer

:18:19.:18:23.

and musician Marvin Ayres, but this historic submarine is part of a new

:18:23.:18:27.

project aimed at capturing the spirit of places rarely connected

:18:27.:18:37.
:18:37.:18:37.

with classical music. I think it is an unusual place to

:18:37.:18:44.

think about composing and recording. But this is a permanent memorial to

:18:44.:18:50.

the submariners. In its way it is a sacred space. He works with the

:18:50.:18:53.

sound engineer to record the resonance of the instruments as the

:18:53.:18:59.

sound interacts with the space. Working in HMS Alliance presented a

:18:59.:19:04.

different challenge to what they were used to. It will be quite

:19:04.:19:07.

interesting trying to find ways of recording the cellos and violins.

:19:07.:19:12.

They sound quite nice, but at the same time we want to preserve the

:19:12.:19:15.

sound in here. The whole point of coming here was to capture the

:19:15.:19:23.

sound as cities. This is the second recording as part of Sacred Spaces.

:19:23.:19:26.

He is hoping to continue the project in other places such as

:19:26.:19:29.

Winchester Cathedral. In each location uses the same series of

:19:29.:19:34.

notes which will be assembled to create one collective peace. Today

:19:34.:19:38.

we will record does, and then compile all the echoes together

:19:38.:19:44.

from those next to create, almost like an instrument, very ethereal

:19:44.:19:50.

and beatable. The work is likely to be displayed early next year at

:19:50.:20:00.
:20:00.:20:04.

HMS Alliance, an interesting choice. He has been to churches, cathedrals.

:20:05.:20:09.

Fascinating. Now we have the sport. In a moment we will find out about

:20:10.:20:14.

a marathon challenge which has got some people in this building quite

:20:14.:20:20.

excited. Clearly not you in your state. Not happening until May and

:20:20.:20:24.

hopefully I will be a bit slimmer by them.

:20:24.:20:29.

Some other bits and pieces. Bournemouth chairman Eddie Mitchell

:20:29.:20:32.

has said he is still intent on buying back the Dean Court stadium.

:20:32.:20:37.

The club was forced to sell in 2005 at the height of financial troubles,

:20:37.:20:41.

and now pays 300,000 per year in rent. The landlord has turned down

:20:41.:20:47.

two offers, one for 4.5 million. Mr Mitchell has now asked them to

:20:47.:20:50.

name their price and is hopeful of securing funding.

:20:50.:20:53.

Bad weather meant there was no racing at the World Championships

:20:54.:20:57.

in Perth, but in ocean racing Hampshire's Mike Golding is

:20:57.:21:02.

currently leading the fleet in a solo sprint across the Atlantic.

:21:02.:21:06.

After fitting the Transat race from Normandy to Costa Rica and number

:21:06.:21:10.

of the skippers including Alex Thompson are racing back from the

:21:10.:21:15.

Caribbean island of St Bart's to Brittany. It is seen as good

:21:15.:21:19.

preparation for the prestigious Vendee Globe next year.

:21:20.:21:24.

It is a critical part of the preparation for the Vendee Globe.

:21:24.:21:28.

It is the only solo race prior to the Vendee Globe. Crucial to finish

:21:28.:21:33.

the race, but of course it would be nice to get a good result as well.

:21:33.:21:37.

But pressure is on for two of the South swimming marathon runners

:21:37.:21:42.

hoping for Olympic selection, there is no just one place left after

:21:42.:21:48.

Paula Radcliffe and Mara Yamauchi were today should places. Louise

:21:48.:21:54.

Damon achieved the qualifying time in the London Marathon but she will

:21:54.:21:57.

need to approve -- improve on that in April to get a chance of the

:21:57.:22:01.

final place. Liz Yelling from Poole is also in the frame although she

:22:01.:22:05.

is yet to achieve the qualifying standard having been hampered by

:22:05.:22:09.

injury. As we spoke about marathons, this

:22:09.:22:13.

is a marathon run on a mission. Not content with completing multiple

:22:13.:22:16.

races himself, he is busy organising an event to get hundreds

:22:17.:22:21.

of other people running for charity. John Stanford from Basingstoke is

:22:21.:22:27.

the brains behind RelayGB, a round Britain relay duty take place next

:22:27.:22:31.

year and if all goes to plan will set a new world record -- due to

:22:31.:22:38.

take place. We first met him last December in the middle of the snow.

:22:38.:22:44.

He had set out to run 12 marathons in 12 months. He ended up doing 20,

:22:44.:22:49.

completing them in March, and raising 11,000 for brain cancer

:22:49.:22:54.

research. Move on one year and he is still running, but limbering up

:22:54.:22:57.

for a bigger challenge. I cannot quite remember exactly where the

:22:57.:23:01.

idea came from, but the idea of pushing it a bit further and

:23:01.:23:06.

running around Great Britain, not on my own, but getting other people

:23:06.:23:11.

involved, at raising awareness and targeting half-a-million pounds for

:23:11.:23:15.

brain tumour research. He is hoping 700 people will sign up for the

:23:15.:23:20.

event. They will be running day and night, each group of individuals or

:23:20.:23:23.

teams completing their 26 miles before handing over to the

:23:23.:23:27.

competitors for the next leg. All the time they will be notching up

:23:27.:23:32.

miles needed to smash a world record for distance relay running.

:23:32.:23:35.

For John, most of the legwork is in the organising.

:23:35.:23:38.

A lot of people have given their free time to help get the thing

:23:38.:23:43.

started. I need some assistance. I have still got a full-time job I am

:23:43.:23:48.

doing. I am finding that a bit of a struggle to keep the thoughts of

:23:48.:23:54.

RelayGB out of my mind. Truly a marathon challenge. RelayGB

:23:54.:24:03.

takes place next May. A great idea. If you would like to

:24:03.:24:07.

take part or put together a team of runners for one of the legs, which

:24:07.:24:12.

is 26 miles, there is more information on the website,

:24:12.:24:16.

relaygb.org. John also wants some help organising events so if you

:24:16.:24:22.

are interested in that he would be delighted to hear from you. For he

:24:22.:24:27.

is very keen to get a team from BBC South running that marathon.

:24:27.:24:33.

I have got a simple answer, she is sitting here. Our resident marathon

:24:33.:24:39.

runner. You could do one marathon, and could be due a mile each? If

:24:39.:24:47.

you get 26 people. -- could you do a mile each.

:24:47.:24:54.

Could we get Rehana out of her high heels?

:24:54.:24:58.

It is totally possible. If you are a business or a school,

:24:58.:25:02.

it is worth considering. As long as it is flat.
