Hello. Welcome to South Today. In tonight's programme: | :00:14. | :00:17.
Don't make the same mistake. A sister's drink drive appeal after | :00:17. | :00:26.
her brother's death. The secret recording which | :00:26. | :00:28.
prosecutors says shows the man accused of killing Georgina Edmonds | :00:28. | :00:34.
tried to manufacture an alibi. A no-go zone. The suburb where | :00:34. | :00:35.
buses won't run because of violent attacks. | :00:35. | :00:38.
And touch-screen technology. The rare monkeys being put through | :00:38. | :00:44.
their paces. This is entirely at the whim of the animals as to | :00:44. | :00:54.
:00:54. | :00:54. | ||
whether they want to come in and take part in the studies. | :00:54. | :01:01.
Learn from my brother's death. Those were the words today of a | :01:01. | :01:08.
woman whose brother died in a drink driving accident. She spoke as one | :01:08. | :01:10.
of our police forces launched a shop a drink driver campaign. | :01:10. | :01:13.
Police forces in the south are hoping to see a continued reduction | :01:14. | :01:16.
in drink driving this Christmas after the number of motorists | :01:16. | :01:19.
arrested across the South last year fell by 121, compared to the year | :01:19. | :01:22.
before. In 2010, in Hampshire 247 drivers were found to be over the | :01:23. | :01:26.
limit or failed to give a breath test, 62 fewer than in 2009. In | :01:26. | :01:32.
Surrey, 50 were caught, down 56. However, in Wiltshire 111 motorists | :01:32. | :01:39.
were arrested, an increase of 55. That is after officers stopped an | :01:39. | :01:43.
extra three and a half thousand motorists. In a moment, we will | :01:43. | :01:46.
hear from a driving safety campaign group. But first, our reporter has | :01:46. | :01:51.
been to meet a woman still living with the effects of drink driving. | :01:51. | :01:58.
He had a heart of gold. He was kind and generous. He was exceptionally | :01:58. | :02:06.
popular. We did not realise how popular he was until he died. | :02:06. | :02:11.
is a difficult day. Three years ago, her brother drove home after a | :02:11. | :02:17.
night out. He had been drinking. He lost control of his car, crashed | :02:17. | :02:21.
into a fence and died in some way. I don't think you ever come to | :02:21. | :02:28.
terms with it. There are questions unanswered. Why? Why would you be | :02:28. | :02:34.
so irresponsible? The impact has been devastating. Not just that | :02:34. | :02:38.
Christmas, but every Christmas from now on there is a void. Something | :02:38. | :02:47.
missing. Last Christmas, Sussex Police arrested 176 drink-drivers. | :02:47. | :02:53.
Now they're trying something new to try to cut VAT number. They say | :02:53. | :02:58.
that if you see someone who has had too much to drink and they're about | :02:58. | :03:08.
:03:08. | :03:10. | ||
to get into our car, at text them on 65,999. They will send a police | :03:10. | :03:16.
officer out to investigate. impact of drink-driving is massive. | :03:16. | :03:22.
Help us solve this problem. We want to stop people from doing this and | :03:22. | :03:28.
catch them. She hopes people will learn from her brother's deaths. | :03:28. | :03:32.
You never think it will happen to you. We would never have thought it | :03:32. | :03:40.
would happen to Douglas. But things do happen. You're not invincible. | :03:40. | :03:44.
If you take irresponsible measures, sometimes the consequences can be | :03:44. | :03:48.
devastating. Shortly before we came on air, I | :03:48. | :03:52.
spoke to Ellen Booth from the road safety group Brake. I began by | :03:52. | :03:55.
asking for her reaction to the fact the number of people caught drink | :03:55. | :04:03.
driving has been dropping overall. Well, hopefully that means the | :04:03. | :04:07.
message is getting through. What I would say is that even with this | :04:07. | :04:11.
good news we still have a huge number of people who are dying each | :04:12. | :04:16.
year on our road because of drivers over the drink-drive limit. Last | :04:16. | :04:24.
year, he does 250 people are. It is estimated that a further 65 died | :04:24. | :04:28.
because of drivers who had been drinking alcohol but were under the | :04:28. | :04:33.
drink Clyde -- under the drink- drive limit. At positive result | :04:33. | :04:38.
there, but Mauny to be done. Police are asking for people to shop and | :04:38. | :04:43.
drink driver. Do you believe that works? We would be in favour of | :04:43. | :04:47.
that. The reason is, although it sounds like quite a severe thing to | :04:47. | :04:53.
ask people to do, drink driving is a serious crime that does lead to | :04:53. | :04:58.
the deaths of innocent road-users. It is a serious crime. For that | :04:58. | :05:05.
reason, we would support that. looking at the figures from police | :05:05. | :05:11.
forces, it seems quite an ad hoc basis. Some police forces are | :05:11. | :05:15.
prioritising it and some are not. Do you think that works, each | :05:15. | :05:19.
police force deciding itself was mad what we would like to see his | :05:19. | :05:24.
traffic policing as one of the national policing priorities. | :05:24. | :05:29.
would ensure there were enough traffic police on the roads to | :05:29. | :05:33.
catch drink drivers and do all of the other things that they do. At | :05:33. | :05:37.
the moment, different police forces give it a different level of | :05:37. | :05:42.
priority depending on their budget and the way that they work. If it | :05:43. | :05:49.
was a national policing priority, we think it would get better | :05:49. | :05:52.
funding and there would be better work done across all of the police | :05:52. | :05:55.
forces. Thank you. A court has heard how the man | :05:55. | :05:59.
accused of the murder of Georgina Edmonds made a phone call to his | :05:59. | :06:02.
mum asking for her to be his alibi. 33-year-old Matthew Hamlen from | :06:02. | :06:04.
Bishopstoke is accused of killing the pensioner at her home in | :06:04. | :06:07.
Brambridge three years ago he denies murder. Our Home Affairs | :06:07. | :06:15.
Correspondent reports. Georgina Edmonds was found dead in | :06:15. | :06:22.
January 2008. She was 77. She had been beaten to death with a current | :06:22. | :06:32.
:06:32. | :06:32. | ||
owner marble rolling penned near Eastleigh. A secret recording shows | :06:32. | :06:40.
a man accused of her murder trying to find an alibi. The court heard a | :06:40. | :06:44.
recording between are the man and his mother. He said, I think I | :06:44. | :06:50.
might have an alibi. I might have been at a friend's House. But he | :06:50. | :06:56.
couldn't remember. Today, the friend told the court she had not | :06:56. | :07:01.
known him at the time. In the same conversation, he told his mother, | :07:01. | :07:06.
it is a witch hunt. I will have to go to court to clear my name. Today, | :07:06. | :07:10.
the court heard from people who had known Matthew Hamlen at the time of | :07:10. | :07:17.
the murder. The jury was told he regularly used cocaine. He was | :07:17. | :07:21.
described as the usually placid man. Though one former friend said he | :07:21. | :07:28.
did have a temper. One woman said she had met him on a night out a | :07:28. | :07:32.
week after the murder. She said they had spoken about who killed | :07:32. | :07:36.
Georgina Edmonds. She said she had told them the police will catch the | :07:36. | :07:44.
killer. She said that Matthew Hammond seemed agitated and | :07:44. | :07:49.
defensive and said they do not always. He denies murder. The case | :07:49. | :07:59.
:07:59. | :08:19. | ||
continues. They are plans that will quadruple | :08:19. | :08:22.
the number of homes in their village. So it is no surprise that | :08:22. | :08:25.
residents of Deepcut in Surrey turned out in force this afternoon | :08:25. | :08:28.
to air their views on the proposals. The homes will be built on the | :08:28. | :08:31.
Princess Royal army barracks which the Ministry of Defence is vacating | :08:31. | :08:33.
in two years' time. Most people accept development is inevitable. | :08:33. | :08:35.
But there is real concern over the detail. | :08:35. | :08:37.
The plans could change the community forever. When the army | :08:37. | :08:40.
leaves the site, it will fleet -- it will free up 100 head tears for | :08:40. | :08:43.
development. Under current plans, 40 will be built on and the rest | :08:43. | :08:47.
will be open space. There are strong views. Am an attractive | :08:47. | :08:55.
village could easily be spoilt ways through traffic. We want to make | :08:55. | :09:00.
sure the traffic infrastructure is adequate. If it is not, life will | :09:00. | :09:08.
become more problematic. Three times more so. Campaigners already | :09:08. | :09:13.
have got the council to carry out an independent study about traffic. | :09:13. | :09:23.
:09:23. | :09:25. | ||
There is another issue in their sights. The proposal shows a | :09:25. | :09:29.
supermarket for a 3,000 square metres. That is far greater than | :09:29. | :09:36.
for the needs Ford just Distillers. That will bring even more traffic. | :09:36. | :09:44.
Today, they were wanting comments about the issue. In a statement, | :09:44. | :09:54.
:09:54. | :09:59. | ||
A formal planning application will be submitted in the spring. | :09:59. | :10:09.
:10:09. | :10:11. | ||
Building could start by 2016. Still to come in this evening's | :10:11. | :10:13.
South Today: The Sussex and England all-rounder who has been dealing | :10:13. | :10:21.
with a testing delivery off the field. | :10:21. | :10:24.
A row has broken out over plans to expand Brighton and Hove Albion's | :10:24. | :10:27.
AMEX stadium in Falmer. The heated exchange took place on the social | :10:27. | :10:30.
network Twitter between Green Councillor Jason Kitcat and the | :10:30. | :10:33.
former Leader of Brighton and Hove City Council Lord Steve Bassam. The | :10:33. | :10:36.
two locked horns over proposals for an extra 8,000 seats at the new | :10:36. | :10:45.
stadium. Hearers what the debate is all | :10:45. | :10:51.
about. The expansion of this new stadium. With plans to build an | :10:51. | :10:56.
extra 1,000 parking spaces and community centre nearby, parking | :10:56. | :11:00.
that might have helped football fans at the weekend. Having those | :11:00. | :11:04.
extra spaces would be an important part of the application to increase | :11:04. | :11:09.
capacity at the stadium by a further 8,000. But on Twitter, the | :11:09. | :11:17.
former Labour leader of the council accuses Jason Kitcat and other | :11:17. | :11:22.
green councillors of trying to block the expansion fans -- | :11:22. | :11:25.
expansion plans by blocking the extra car-parking spaces being | :11:25. | :11:35.
:11:35. | :11:55. | ||
The Football Club has been a major success story. They have a new | :11:55. | :12:01.
stadium and want to expand further. If these car-parking spaces are | :12:01. | :12:05.
blocked, it means the option of expanding the stadium is more | :12:05. | :12:10.
difficult and, placated. original application had provision | :12:10. | :12:16.
for parking in some areas. It did not work out. The Academy decided | :12:16. | :12:20.
not to provide debt and also at the university campus. We're trying to | :12:20. | :12:25.
find alternative ways to deal with transport issue is. Fans say | :12:25. | :12:35.
expansion is needed at their new stadium. Every league game has sold | :12:35. | :12:45.
:12:45. | :12:52. | ||
out every game. There is a waiting list for 200 season tickets. | :12:52. | :12:55.
South of England Conservative MPs have been piling the pressure on | :12:55. | :12:58.
the Prime Minister on the eve of his crunch trip to Brussels. David | :12:58. | :13:01.
Cameron faced a volley of concerned questions from Euro-sceptic MPs on | :13:01. | :13:04.
his own side. Chichester's Andrew Tyrie said even the perception of a | :13:04. | :13:06.
European assault on the UK's financial services industry would | :13:06. | :13:10.
be the most likely thing to unite the House of Commons. Mr Cameron | :13:10. | :13:15.
was also challenged by two other Conservative MPs from the south. | :13:15. | :13:22.
Why is my right honourable friend supporting a policy of fiscal | :13:22. | :13:25.
unification for the eurozone states, which, if it happens, will | :13:25. | :13:33.
undoubtedly lead to the creation of a dangerously undemocratic single | :13:33. | :13:43.
:13:43. | :13:44. | ||
government for those countries? should be seeking changes in the | :13:44. | :13:49.
laws of emigration, employment and fishing rights instead. In order to | :13:49. | :13:53.
support our economy. Hampshire Constabulary has billed | :13:53. | :13:55.
the Metropolitan Police 705,000 for deploying officers to the | :13:55. | :13:58.
capital during the summer riots. Specialist public order teams | :13:58. | :14:01.
provided backup to the Met for more than a month in August after | :14:01. | :14:06.
violence flared up. It also hopes to secure more than 500,000 from | :14:06. | :14:10.
the Home Office, but has yet to receive any guarantee of payment. | :14:10. | :14:13.
The force, which covers Hampshire and the Isle of Wight, needs to | :14:13. | :14:20.
save up to 50 million by 2015. A bus company has been forced to | :14:20. | :14:22.
withdraw night services through a Bournemouth estate after its | :14:22. | :14:28.
vehicles were pelted five times in the past month. The company has | :14:28. | :14:31.
stopped running certain services through West Howe after 6pm at | :14:31. | :14:34.
night. The Yellow buses were damaged and windows were smashed | :14:34. | :14:40.
while passengers were on-board. The company say the attacks are highly | :14:40. | :14:42.
dangerous and potentially life threatening. Our reporter has been | :14:42. | :14:51.
following this story, and joins us from Bournemouth tonight. | :14:51. | :14:56.
It is still not clear tonight who is responsible for these attacks. | :14:56. | :15:01.
The result is that the buses are staying in the depot, instead of | :15:01. | :15:08.
out on the roads of the West Howe estate. A lot of people use these | :15:08. | :15:15.
bosses, so -- a lot of people use these buses, so their withdrawal is | :15:15. | :15:19.
having quite an impact. Since the end of November, the | :15:19. | :15:24.
evening buses on this estate have been under attack with missiles | :15:24. | :15:29.
aimed at windows. One passenger was covered in broken glass last week. | :15:29. | :15:39.
:15:39. | :15:39. | ||
This is a last resort. People rely on as. We understand that. To take | :15:39. | :15:45.
a vehicle and service out of an area affect the community. | :15:45. | :15:51.
Unfortunately, this is a safety issue. We needed to do it. People | :15:51. | :15:57.
depend on at the bus service year. The withdrawal after 6pm is a big | :15:57. | :16:06.
inconvenience. I have teenage children who are out in the evening. | :16:06. | :16:12.
They will now have to walk. Quite scary to think that you have to get | :16:12. | :16:21.
off early and walk home. It is an inconvenience. I use the bus a lot. | :16:21. | :16:26.
The bus company have been speaking to the police and council officials. | :16:26. | :16:32.
Drivers are concerned. They all agree this has to be resolved | :16:32. | :16:42.
:16:42. | :16:42. | ||
quickly. The potential injuries could be catastrophic. There could | :16:42. | :16:51.
be anybody from an elderly person to a young child on a bus. If a | :16:51. | :16:57.
brick hits them on the head, at the injuries could be fatal. This | :16:57. | :17:05.
afternoon, Dorset Police said that they have been visiting schools and | :17:05. | :17:08.
explaining this serious damage that can be caused to vehicles on the | :17:08. | :17:12.
road. Tonight, there has been a strong message from the borough | :17:12. | :17:17.
council. They have said that they will take action on the tenancies | :17:17. | :17:22.
on families involved if the evidence warrants it. While the | :17:22. | :17:29.
investigation continues, the buses will stay in the depot each night | :17:29. | :17:33.
for now. Funding for nine libraries in | :17:33. | :17:36.
Dorset will be stopped, despite a court ruling that similar plans in | :17:36. | :17:39.
Somerset were unlawful. 800,0000 is to be taken from the county | :17:39. | :17:41.
council's libraries budget. It has led to protests in Dorchester. The | :17:41. | :17:44.
council says it is confident it won't face a similar legal | :17:44. | :17:54.
:17:54. | :17:56. | ||
challenge. Offenders have been brought in to | :17:56. | :17:59.
help renovate an historic fort in West Sussex. As part of the | :17:59. | :18:01.
Community Payback Scheme, offenders are carrying out work at Shoreham | :18:01. | :18:04.
Fort. It was built in 1857 to protect the Sussex coast against | :18:04. | :18:07.
any French invasion. The offenders have been providing free labour for | :18:07. | :18:16.
the volunteer group that has been restoring the local landmark. | :18:16. | :18:19.
Take a group of monkeys, put them in front of computer touch-screens | :18:19. | :18:22.
and study their reactions. That is what a group of researchers from | :18:22. | :18:24.
Portsmouth University have been doing at Hampshire's Marwell Zoo. | :18:24. | :18:27.
They have opened a new primate study centre. Our reporter has been | :18:27. | :18:33.
to see the animals in action. The there is a new addition to | :18:33. | :18:38.
Monkey Island at Marwell Zoo. These scientists from Portsmouth | :18:38. | :18:40.
University have introduced touch- screen technology to try to find | :18:40. | :18:45.
out about the memory, communication and emotions of these monkeys. It | :18:45. | :18:49.
is hoped the studies will give a greater insight into the mind of | :18:49. | :18:54.
this species. The animals have been in training for six months, | :18:54. | :18:58.
learning a rather sophisticated game of snap. It is entirely at the | :18:58. | :19:03.
whim of the animals as to whether they want to take part in the study. | :19:03. | :19:11.
That is vital. The monkeys have access to a touch screen. When | :19:11. | :19:17.
activated, the computer generates three new images. The monkey has to | :19:17. | :19:26.
select matching images to receive food as a reward. It was quite | :19:26. | :19:29.
challenging at first. Once they understand how to use the screen, | :19:29. | :19:35.
there is a big potential for us and also for the animals. OK, he wants | :19:36. | :19:40.
me to focus on the task! Soon, the monkeys will move on to facial | :19:40. | :19:50.
expressions to see whether they can recognise different moods. Now we | :19:50. | :19:55.
can try to work out how monkeys interpret facial expressions and | :19:55. | :19:59.
social signals. That is very important. The initial findings | :19:59. | :20:04.
could be published in the spring. The research will continue as | :20:04. | :20:10.
scientists tried to find out how monkeys respond to sound and | :20:10. | :20:17.
different social situations. How interesting! Monkeys in front | :20:17. | :20:22.
of a computer screen. There is a joke there, but I will not go | :20:22. | :20:31.
there! Now the sport. Special delivery for cricket coming up | :20:31. | :20:39.
later? Look forward to that one. | :20:39. | :20:42.
Portsmouth Football Club will be on the agenda when the Football League | :20:42. | :20:44.
hold their monthly board meeting in London tomorrow. A League spokesman | :20:44. | :20:47.
confirmed today that Pompey's on- going financial issues would be | :20:47. | :20:50.
discussed. He declined to comment though on whether the club could | :20:50. | :20:52.
face a points penalty, after their parent company went into | :20:52. | :20:54.
administration. It is understood Andrew Andronikou has already been | :20:54. | :20:57.
contacted by interested parties, in his role as administrator of | :20:57. | :20:59.
Pompey's owners CSI. It has been a frustrating few | :20:59. | :21:02.

2011 season, and cost him his England place. But having recovered | :21:05. | :21:07.
from surgery, he's flown out to take part in the re-vamped | :21:07. | :21:10.
Australian Twenty20 Big Bash tournament. And he has also been | :21:10. | :21:18.
dealing with a testing delivery of a different kind. | :21:18. | :21:25.
Things have changed in this household in the last few weeks. | :21:25. | :21:30.
This cricketer is now a father. have achieved some amazing things | :21:30. | :21:36.
in cricket, but nothing is better than seeing your son for the first | :21:36. | :21:41.

territory on the field. After a knee injury, he will head to | :21:46. | :21:53.
Melbourne to play under Shane Warne. This is the first time that this | :21:53. | :21:59.
has become such a large franchise. By finger will be excited for | :21:59. | :22:04.
everyone. I am sure a lot of people were come to watch this. While the | :22:04. | :22:11.
Surrey bowler has been cementing his plays in v England one-day side, | :22:11. | :22:18.
others are prepared to be patient. I am focusing on trying to get back | :22:18. | :22:28.

to fitness. This is a good competition to play end. If I | :22:29. | :22:34.
compete, it puts me in contention. Right now, I am trying to enjoy my | :22:34. | :22:43.
cricket and stay fit. Little baby Joshua is said to be heading out to | :22:43. | :22:49.
Australia soon to catch up with his father. | :22:49. | :22:52.
Staying with Sussex, and wicketkeeper batsman Matt Prior has | :22:52. | :22:55.
been awarded a benefit year by the county in 2012. The former Brighton | :22:55. | :22:58.

helped the county win their first ever County Championship title two | :23:01. | :23:04.
years later. Prior has played 47 tests for England, as well as 78 | :23:04. | :23:06.

Sailing Championships in Australia, for Portland-based sailor Giles | :23:08. | :23:12.
Scott. He got the better of rival Ben Ainslie in the Finn Class, | :23:12. | :23:15.
while organisers are on high alert after a great white shark was | :23:15. | :23:18.
sighted near the courses off Western Australia. Scott is seen | :23:18. | :23:21.
here making a smart move away from the marker buoy, on the way to two | :23:21. | :23:25.
firsts and a second place from his three races. Scott missed out on | :23:25. | :23:27.
the one Olympic place to Lymington's Ben Ainslie, who lies | :23:27. | :23:37.

Strong won today. Very strong when back tomorrow morning. Increasing | :25:10. | :25:14.
cloud cover tonight. For the first part of the night, we will have | :25:14. | :25:19.
clear skies. There might be a touch of frost before the winds changed | :25:19. | :25:24.
direction and draw in milder air from the South West. Outbreaks of | :25:24. | :25:28.
patchy light rain are possible. It all changes tomorrow. We will have | :25:28. | :25:38.

some very strong winds. Gusts of up to 60 mph. Very strong won indeed. | :25:42. | :25:50.
Tomorrow morning, patchy rain about. A lot of rain before -- a lot of | :25:50. | :25:54.
cloud before the main band of rain arrives. Temperatures slightly | :25:54. | :26:01.
higher than today. Tomorrow night, the rain will battle its way | :26:01. | :26:04.
through south and eastwards. Were we have had the rainfall and the | :26:04. | :26:11.
clean and skies, there is a risk of some ice on untreated surfaces. Icy | :26:11. | :26:16.
conditions, perhaps a touch of frost first thing on Friday morning. | :26:16. | :26:20.
But even though there is that keen north-westerly breeze, the main | :26:20. | :26:25.
rain band clears off and we will see some sunshine. Rain tomorrow, | :26:25. | :26:30.

Temperatures could be the lowest they have been this winter. Perhaps | :26:40. | :26:49.
minus five first thing. Back to square one on Sunday. Here is the | :26:49. | :26:56.
summary. Wet and windy tomorrow. Gale force won are possible. Local | :26:56. | :27:02.
