Hello, I'm Sally Taylor. Welcome to South Today. In tonight's

:00:02.:00:05.

programme: an investigation's underway after four people were

:00:05.:00:15.
:00:15.:00:16.

injured at a fireworks display. $NEWLINE A tough time for traders,

:00:58.:01:01.

an accident at a fireworks display in Dorset last night. Around six

:01:01.:01:04.

rockets shot into the crowd at the event at Blandford Forum after a

:01:04.:01:10.

box of fireworks malfunctioned. Four people suffered minor injuries,

:01:10.:01:14.

but no-one was seriously hurt. Investigations into how it happened

:01:14.:01:18.

have begun. Roger Finn has been speaking to a woman who caught the

:01:18.:01:28.
:01:28.:01:29.

whole thing on camera. It was meant to be the grand finale

:01:29.:01:34.

to the Christmas Festival. Hundreds of people, including dunk children

:01:34.:01:38.

gathered in the market place for a fireworks display. Set off from the

:01:38.:01:44.

roof of a bank, Suzanne Patrick was phoning -- filming on her phone

:01:55.:02:01.

was just Celtic, everybody was running and screaming. -- screaming.

:02:01.:02:06.

Still scared, still shaking at 6 o'clock this morning when I got up

:02:06.:02:11.

for work. Never experienced anything in my life like it. You

:02:11.:02:15.

wondered if it would hit you, thinking somebody would get heard.

:02:15.:02:20.

Once you light then you cannot stop it. They were just shooting down at

:02:20.:02:25.

people, down the alleyway where kids were. I turned my back, I have

:02:25.:02:35.

no idea how anybody didn't get hurt. The instant is being investigated

:02:35.:02:39.

by Health and Safety Executive's and by Dorset trading standards.

:02:39.:02:42.

Dorset Police said in the absence of malicious intent they will not

:02:42.:02:47.

be initiating a formal investigation, today the first full

:02:47.:02:50.

organisers said their thoughts were with those affected by the incident.

:02:50.:02:54.

They also said it would be inappropriate to offer any further

:02:54.:02:59.

comment until an investigation is complete. They spoke of a display

:02:59.:03:03.

malfunction, and it is believed that the fireworks were known as a

:03:03.:03:09.

cake garage. All lit by a single fused. It was meant to be the

:03:09.:03:13.

happiest time of the Year, everybody celebrating. It's turned

:03:13.:03:17.

into a disaster. $NEWLINE Christmas is just ten days away,

:03:17.:03:20.

traditionally the busiest time of year for shops. But figures

:03:20.:03:23.

released today appear to show many of us are keeping a tight rein on

:03:23.:03:26.

our finances in the current economic climate. Official figures

:03:26.:03:29.

show that retail sales fell by 0.4 per cent last month compared to

:03:29.:03:33.

October figures. It brings to an end two months of growth. The

:03:33.:03:36.

Office for National Statistics said that much of the decline was caused

:03:36.:03:39.

by consumers cutting back on luxury items such as computers, mobile

:03:39.:03:45.

phones, watches and jewellery. The drop is despite a large number of

:03:45.:03:48.

special offers from retailers in an attempt to drum up pre-Christmas

:03:48.:03:52.

trade. Concluding our look this week at the economy, our reporter

:03:52.:03:58.

Alastair Fee is at the Oracle shopping Centre in Reading tonight.

experience. His it is all about choice, how we shop and Wear. The

:04:26.:04:32.

competition for our cash is greater than ever. At home, starting

look to see what is available then I will go and try something on.

:04:46.:04:52.

That is how I will use it, to see what a shop has got. If I look for

:04:52.:04:57.

dresses, I will look it up and see if I like it. Then I will go in to

:04:57.:05:02.

try it on. The way we shop has changed, many town centres now

:05:02.:05:10.

dominated by high street names. Easy parking and bars near by. This

:05:10.:05:14.

shopping centre is one such success story. We are enjoying an

:05:14.:05:19.

increasing number of people coming, we saw an increase of about 2.6 per

:05:19.:05:24.

cent last month and we have seen about 1.1 million people coming to

:05:24.:05:28.

our shopping centre over the last three weeks. That means they may

:05:28.:05:33.

not be spending more, per head, but we are seeing more shoppers.

:05:33.:05:38.

story is different on readings High Street, especially for independent

:05:38.:05:43.

retailers. This has been trading for more than 100 years. It is

:05:43.:05:48.

quite challenging at the moment, quite tight. I don't think it will

:05:48.:05:53.

improve over the next few years. It will be challenging for five years.

:05:53.:05:58.

If she has the time and money, a trip to the shopping centre can be

:05:58.:06:07.

a whole day out. It is this experience retailers want to create.

:06:07.:06:12.

I am joined now by the retail experts from a Reading University.

:06:12.:06:17.

Why are these big centres bearing better than market towns?

:06:17.:06:20.

Competition is cut-throat through many centres, places like Reading

:06:20.:06:24.

are putting lots of investments into getting people then. Putting

:06:24.:06:29.

on music, entertainment for children to draw people in and to

:06:29.:06:33.

give them more than just the shops. They are getting people in but they

:06:33.:06:37.

are not spending the money. Football is well up, but the

:06:37.:06:42.

question is whether people will convert that into spending. So many

:06:42.:06:46.

discounts and sells to attract people in, retailers are trying

:06:46.:06:50.

their hardest to get people in in the hope that will translate to

:06:50.:06:54.

spending. How big are all of the attractions to see around us?

:06:54.:06:59.

People singing under the Christmas tree, people queuing up to see

:06:59.:07:04.

Father Christmas. Is that something the market towns could learn?

:07:04.:07:07.

have seen that market towns are under more and more pressure to

:07:07.:07:12.

compete, to give people variety and reasons to go to smaller centres

:07:12.:07:17.

with fewer shops. What we see in places like Reading is an attempt

:07:17.:07:21.

to draw people into a big centre. Market towns could learn from this

:07:21.:07:26.

and could attract people. Giving them more than just the shops.

:07:26.:07:31.

Thank you. We won't get a final picture on how and where we are

:07:31.:07:37.

spending money until retail figures are out in the New Year.

:07:37.:07:41.

The family of a serving soldier who died after a fight outside a

:07:41.:07:44.

Portsmouth nightclub say they are frustrated and angry that the case

:07:45.:07:50.

was dropped by police Matt Brooks died five days after he was punched

:07:50.:07:53.

to the ground by twenty two year old Dean Aldcroft from Portsmouth.

:07:53.:07:56.

Mr Aldcroft said he was acting in self-defence. Today a Southampton

:07:56.:07:58.

coroner recorded an open verdict, saying there was not enough CCTV

:07:58.:08:03.

footage or reliable evidence to come to any other conclusion. Metal

:08:03.:08:05.

thieves have put lives at risk after attacking three ambulances in

:08:05.:08:08.

Reading, cutting off their exhaust pipes to steal the catalytic

:08:08.:08:14.

converters underneath. The vehicles are used for a range of emergency

:08:14.:08:18.

medical services. But they're now off the road for twenty four hours.

:08:18.:08:21.

Aside from the cost of repair, there's concern that more money

:08:21.:08:24.

will need to be spent improving security in the compound where

:08:24.:08:34.
:08:34.:08:36.

they're stored. Of all things to steal from, why in ambulance?

:08:36.:08:42.

Crippling the emergency services. If we don't today 999 work, what we

:08:42.:08:48.

do is critical and vital for the hospitals. For those vehicles, it

:08:48.:08:53.

has really impacted our ability to support critically ill people who

:08:53.:08:56.

need transport. The future of Hampshire's Rose Bowl

:08:56.:08:58.

cricket ground is being discussed at a meeting this evening.

:08:58.:09:01.

Eastleigh Borough Council is considering buying the site for six

:09:01.:09:04.

and a half million pounds and then leasing it back to Hampshire County

:09:04.:09:07.

Cricket Club. But local businessman Moez, who operates the hotel next

:09:07.:09:10.

to it, says it's unfair. The council says it'll benefit the

:09:10.:09:16.

local economy. And our political editor Peter

:09:16.:09:19.

Henley is at tonight's meeting, and will be reporting on the outcome in

:09:19.:09:22.

our late news at 10:25. One of the triplet snow leopards

:09:22.:09:27.

born earlier this year at Marwell Wildlife has died suddenly. The zoo

:09:27.:09:31.

says the unexpected death of Kitana is a very big loss and will have a

:09:31.:09:33.

detrimental impact on their breeding programme, although her

:09:33.:09:40.

two brothers are still well. Snow leopards are endangered in the wild,

:09:40.:09:43.

and those bred in captivity are playing a crucial role in attempts

:09:43.:09:50.

Still to come in this evening's South Today, given the expected

:09:50.:09:59.

stormy weather stay with us for Reham's forecast. Stormy times

:10:00.:10:05.

ahead, even some snow, I will be back with a full forecast late in

:10:05.:10:09.

the programme. Back in the 1960s Jean Wilson

:10:09.:10:13.

filmed the work of a charity she ran with her husband helping to

:10:13.:10:16.

restore sight to people in Africa and Asia. For decades the films lay

:10:16.:10:19.

forgotten in storage at Sightsavers headquarters in West Sussex. But

:10:19.:10:22.

over the past year the reels of film, and more shot by other

:10:22.:10:24.

cameramen, have been unearthed, digitised and restored to their

:10:24.:10:29.

former glory. And today for the first time in many years Lady Jean

:10:29.:10:39.
:10:39.:10:40.

had the chance to see the pictures once again. Sean Killick reports.

1950 with minimal resources and sky high aspirations. It has developed

steadily. Sightsavers is now one of the largest 50 charities in the

country. Really exciting to see the old footage, we saw some of the

:12:08.:12:13.

teachers being trained on how to include Blind children in classes.

:12:13.:12:18.

Something we continue to do today. An incredibly important help for

Many extras came forward after an appeal from South Today. I'm from

of it. It is good fun, could insight into how it is made.

but some of them are still trying to get selected, quite a lot of

:15:34.:15:39.

them so they have these gruelling training schedules. No let-up for

:15:39.:15:43.

them over Christmas. Just as true for our Paralympians. Paralympic

:15:43.:15:48.

rowers from the south are battling it out to represent Team GB at the

:15:48.:15:52.

Paralympics and members of the squad recently picked up the medals

:15:52.:16:00.

at the World Championships in Slovenia. Reham and David Smith

:16:00.:16:08.

were both part of the team to win gold in mixed coxed fours but Andy

:16:08.:16:11.

Houghton won silver in the men's adaptive single sculls. They have a

:16:11.:16:14.

lot to prove. In Beijing, Britain topped the

:16:14.:16:22.

medal table for rowing. 2012 hopefuls again seemed a long away

:16:22.:16:26.

off. The huge part of the battle is making it to the start-line in the

:16:26.:16:30.

Paralympics. Once we are there, we know we will be so strong. We will

:16:30.:16:35.

have to put in so much time and effort, we need to get that exactly

:16:35.:16:40.

right just to get selected. Like all the G B Rose, training is

:16:40.:16:49.

intense, at least two sessions per day -- Team GB rowers. For one

:16:49.:16:53.

hopeful, the training is nothing new. Dave Smith used to be on the

-- Pam Relph. It has been an amazing year. The lead-up to the

:17:26.:17:29.

World Championship was amazing. I never believed that one year later

:17:29.:17:33.

I would be standing on a medal podium with a gold medal around my

:17:33.:17:36.

neck. It really was one door closing and another door opening. I

:17:36.:17:40.

harder to do if you come off the back of a bad result and

performance in a local derby match. You can see more of that interview

tomorrow. If you cannot wait, it is on the BBC's football website as

:19:45.:19:50.

He has, all eyes on the weather. Where is this tracking? We had

several versions? It has sunk further south. Let's look at what

we started the day with. A nice bright morning on the beach by John

Time for a new feature on South Today. It is all about people who

:22:22.:22:26.

are living the dream, whatever it may be. You might remember this,

:22:26.:22:29.

earlier this year some Berkshire children got together after school,

:22:29.:22:36.

formed a rock band and put the video on the internet. There could

:22:37.:22:43.

not have guessed what would happen next. The children made headlines

:22:43.:22:46.

all across the will put what they really wanted was to hear what

:22:46.:22:50.

their idols, metallic the thought of their video. So even to mingle

:22:50.:22:56.

with the start, Tom Hepworth meant to meet the Mini Band. The report

:22:57.:23:01.

contains flash photography. MUSIC: "Enter Sandman" by Metallica

:23:01.:23:09.

This is the video that started it all. The group of children formed a

:23:09.:23:13.

band and recorded a video of themselves and popped it on YouTube.

:23:13.:23:19.

Suddenly it went viral. It got 800,000 hits prompting a frenzy of

:23:19.:23:23.

media attention. Radio, newspapers, magazines and even Russian

:23:23.:23:28.

television wanted a piece of the action.

:23:28.:23:37.

SPEAKING IN RUSSIA. -- Russian. They are playing a benefit gig for

:23:37.:23:41.

a hospice but I thought I would catch up with them to ask what life

:23:41.:23:45.

is like no other they are world famous.

:23:45.:23:53.

The girls have been following me around school. It is quite cool!

:23:53.:24:03.
:24:03.:24:05.

Following you around, everywhere? His sister is their girlfriend.

:24:05.:24:09.

What is it like being a rock and roll singer, have you got a certain

:24:09.:24:14.

style? The style I like is definitely rock music. How do you

:24:14.:24:24.
:24:24.:24:27.

sing when using that. I go like... I thought he was burping at first!

:24:27.:24:32.

It is very low. Harrison, are you all right? I think he is

:24:32.:24:36.

embarrassed. The you have not demanded 46 black

:24:36.:24:43.

fluffy towels and a big jar of jelly beans, have you? No, we do

:24:43.:24:47.

not want to push anyone about. We do not want to be diva guys who

:24:47.:24:51.

break classes just because somebody did not get the right to how well.

:24:51.:24:55.

I would prefer to get it myself. The Mini Band are just about to

:24:55.:24:58.

take to the stage. What they do not know it is we have arranged a

:24:58.:25:03.

little surprise for them. The first band up are the Mini Band

:25:03.:25:09.

but before you guys come up we have a very special message all the way

:25:09.:25:19.
:25:19.:25:23.

By the time you guys are our age, you will be so incredibly great.

:25:23.:25:33.

The are all ready incredibly great. Harrier and Harrison and Archie.

:25:33.:25:39.

All you guys Charlie. You guys rock. You are very cool. Maybe we could

:25:39.:25:43.

work something and open up for you or if you guys will have us. We are

:25:43.:25:47.

an up and coming band out of northern California so if you will

:25:47.:25:55.

have us, we are there for the taking. You guys rock! They

:25:55.:26:01.

recorded especially for you. What do you make of that? They are like

:26:01.:26:07.

the biggest metal band in the world. It is amazing. I can't believe it.

:26:07.:26:17.
:26:17.:26:43.

Mini Band living the dream. They were in tears! Next week we will

:26:43.:26:47.

make -- meet Mark James who is running two drained at once,

:26:47.:26:50.

travelling the world as an airline steward and more music because he

:26:50.:26:53.

is coming over to conduct the Sussex Symphony Orchestra. Find out

:26:54.:26:58.

how he juggles his busy life on next week Living Their Dream. A bit

:26:58.:27:06.

of a recap on the weather. We think Just to remind you it will be

:27:06.:27:09.

fairly troublesome through the morning rush-hour, we think that

:27:09.:27:16.

the wind may have diminished a bit, it has gusted a bit further south

:27:16.:27:20.

but of course the risk of snow is there. A mixture of snow and sleet

:27:20.:27:24.

for the morning rush hour. Watch out on the road because it could be

:27:24.:27:31.
