Welcome to South today. In tonight's programme, a tragic

accident, but there is criticism of the emergency services who could

not help a drowning man in this lake. Remembering those killed in

an IRA bomb attack in Aldershot 40 years ago. There was nothing of the

day I could remember except the finding out, and then it is just

like someone never coming home. hundreds of jobs under threat as

one of the largest car dealerships calls and the administrator. And a

tribute to a Red Arrows pilot. The winners are shocked at being chosen.

We were bouncing off the walls with excitement. I wasn't as pleased as

my mum was. A I was more shaking am . Recommendations for new training

at all three of Hampshire's emergency services are being made

tonight after a man was left floating face down in a three foot

deep lake. An inquest hard that 41- year-old Simon Burgess drowned

after he had an epileptic seizure while feeding swans at Walpole Lake.

At the inquest the coroner said there was a slim chance Mr Burgess

could have been saved if he had been rescued faster. He recorded a

verdict accidental death. Danielle Glavin is live tonight in our

Portsmouth studio. The inquest heard there were communication

problems at the scene and that the emergency services were fighting

against each other. One police officer volunteered to go into the

water but his control room told him not to. A fire crew had decided

that Mr Burgess was beyond help. The coroner said this was an

accidental death but a speedier recovery time in future could save

lives. The coroner concluded that Simon Burgess had an epileptic fit

in the late and a fire crew was on the scene in five minutes, but when

they saw his body face-down, 25 metres from the edge, they decided

he was dead and waited for a specialist team to retrieve the

body. His family say they will never know if they speedier rescue

would have saved him. When a loved one is involved in an accident like

this you can only hope that everything possible is being done

to save them, regardless of how small the chances of success are.

We hope lessons are learned and if someone is saved in the future,

then his death would not be in vain. The coroner said there was a slim

chance that a speedier recovery could have saved Simon's life, but

he said this was an accidental death. But he did have concerns

about the future, telling the emergency services that training

must improve so that if someone's life is hanging in the balance in a

similar incident in future, they know how to assess it and how to

respond. During the inquest the fire service said health and safety

had not stopped the rescue and they thought Simon Burgess was beyond

help, but they accepted the need for training. In was clear to The

Crues that the it was decease, but we have made some changes in terms

of the authority and in terms of working with other emergency

services in the future. And the Ministry of Justice will also get a

copy of the coroner's report. He said in the past when the three

emergency services had come together to overcome issues that

could have happened, and he had this would be the case here and

that Simon Burgess's death would not be in vain. It was an attack by

the IRA which killed seven people and injured 19 others in Aldershot.

40 years ago today the IRA bombed the headquarters of the Parachute

regiment. Some say it was in retaliation to events in

Londonderry when the regiment was involved in disturbances in which

thirteen civilians died. Earlier today a wreath-laying ceremony was

held and Steve Humphrey has been following the story. It is nice

everybody made the effort and it shows people had not forgot. Major

John Cracknell was just 100 yards away when it happened. A Big Bang

behind me, then all the glass was coming in around me. It was a

terrorist attack that shocked the nation and struck at the heart of

the military establishment. There was nothing of the day that I could

remember except the evening of finding out, and then it was just...

Hard to say, it is someone never coming home. Devastating, really.

It was a matter of a moment, so adrenalin kicks in and you get on

with joining in with your comrades to see what you can do for the

people who are injured. The bomb exploded near the Parachute be

A man from Berkshire arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving

following the death of a 12-year- old boy has been released on bail.

The collision happened at a pedestrian crossing in Reading

yesterday afternoon. Unconfirmed reports suggest the lights at the

crossing on Kings Road weren't operating at the time. The boy,

who'd been walking home from school, died from multiple injuries in

hospital last night. One of the South's best-known car dealerships

has called in the administrators. Seward Wessex Limited employs

around 200 staff who now face an uncertain future. The company is

part of the larger Seward Motor Group which last year gave its name

to AFC Bournemouth's stadium as part of a three-year sponsorship

deal. Our Transport Correspondent Paul Clifton is here. Paul, what

more can you tell us? Seward is a car dealership with several

branches in Dorset. It sells and maintains cars for Vauxhall and

Chevrolet. It was founded 23 years ago, and everything seemed to be

going well. So well that it became a principal sponsor of AFC

Bournemouth. Last year their football ground was renamed the

Seward Stadium in a six figure deal. The chairman called it "a huge

assistance in the commercial sustainability of the club." Now it

has all gone wrong. In a statement, I should also point out that Seward

dealers and accident repair workshops in Hampshire and West

have been released on bail. The coroner in an inquest into the

death of a Royal Marine in Afghanistan has paid tribute to the

sacrifices made by military personnel. 22-year-old Marine James

Wright, from Weymouth, was killed in a grenade explosion in Helmand

Province last August. Today the West Dorset Coroner said he felt

the verdict of unlawful killing was inadequate and recorded a narrative

verdict. The defence is making closing speeches in the trial of

six men alleged to have taken part in a riot at Ford Open Prison in

West Sussex. Trouble started at the jail just after midnight on January

first last year and several buildings were torched during the

disturbance. All six defendants in the dock at Hove Crown Court deny a

charge of prison mutiny. Book due in the live at Fratton Park where

will no longer charge for four weeks after a resident's death. Sue

notice of the death of her father Kenneth. The company says it will

now only bill relatives for an extra seven days. Or woman from

Facebook accusing her of being a paedophile or a drug dealer. Nicola

Brooks said it first Sussex police said they could not do anything

about it, but the case appears to be part of a growing problem posed

by tens of thousands of people each year, including children. It is a

21st century crime but normally the celebrities are usually victims of

turned on me and gave me the vile abuse when they didn't even know me.

Other comments were too offensive to broadcast. They said, the police,

that there were so many incidents of crimes like this on Facebook and

Twitter that they could not looking to everyone. Sussex police told us

they are now in touch with Facebook to try and track the offenders down.

Facebook denied claims that the systems do not work, pointing to

the successful prosecution of a man who had written abuse about a

teenage girl who had killed herself. Al large number of children receive

abusive messages have hate pages set up about them online, and for

some this happens relentlessly over a period of months. Nicola is now

working with her lawyer to raise awareness of the crime and says she

has spoken out today because bullies should be stood up to,

whatever misery they cause. Weymouth council is still

investigating cracks in a harbour wall which forced the closure of

the town's ferry port. Following the last sailing on Friday, Condor

Ferries has moved its services to Poole in Dorset because engineers

could not guarantee the integrity of the terminal. The council says

it does not know how long it will be closed, as they are still

studying implications of the cracks found in the sea wall.

The winning design for a memorial to the Red Arrows pilot who died

when his plane crashed near Bournemouth last year, has been

revealed today. The design, by two primary school children, will be

used to create a sculpture. It will stand on the seaside cliff over

which the Red Arrows flew just before Flight Lieutenant Jon Egging

was killed. Chris Coneybeer reports. For if you just go like that, and

then you have won just going like that, and one further away, it will

look like it is flying. He s, it would. Penny and George like

drawing, and they have produced an image that will be used as the

design for a new sculpture, remembering the pilot killed after

last year's Red Arrows air show. Children from 39 schools in the

area took part in the competition to make the design, and when they

won, these two were very pleased. Just bouncing off the walls.

Exciting. It was really funny, because we didn't think we would

wind. I bet you were pleased. How pleased? Not as pleased as my

mum was. I was more shaking than pleased. This is where the art work

is going to be placed, on Bournemouth's East Cliff. It is a

significant spot for the Red Arrows because over here is the hotel used

as a base when they are in the area, and also this part of the cliff is

where they align themselves up for their performances coming in from

the sea. They hope to have the Scots in place in time for this

year's air show. I love the idea that in 50 years, you could be

walking along East Cliff with their grandchildren and saying, I was

involved in designing that. It is such a privilege. The Red Arrows

have been a familiar part of summer shows on the south coast for many

years. The fatal crash had a profound effect. This summer a

memorial to remember John will be It will be a fitting tribute to a

Red Arrows pilot. The administrator running Portsmouth Football Club

will tonight meet with supporters, to hear their views on how the club

should move forward. This follows Pompey entering administration at

the High Court on Friday. Kris Temple is live at Fratton Park this

These on a relatively senior salary, so they have started the top so

that will be a financial saving, but for others at the club that is

it's inevitable that more jobs at the club will have to go too. Now

though, fans are gathering behind us for a forum with the club's

administator Trevor Birch. He's already welcomed the idea of a

possible fans' takeover. And those supporters will go into tonight's

forum, keen to find out what it would take to make that a reality.

Portsmouth have prided themselves on being a community club, and now

the administrators have given credence to a possible fans take

over. The previous administrators are not back interest from the

groups of funds, but the administrator now invited his

interest. They have been tried to get talks with the German for

several weeks, and Trevor Birch has agreed to see is in 24 hours, which

tells his own story. We are confident and encouraged as a

supporters' trust we can put together a bid and we look forward

to further negotiations. supporters' own club wouldn't be a

new concept. That happens at Brentford and Exeter. Goodwillie is

one thing, but raising the money is another. We can do it in a number

of ways, but you want to work with potential investors and we have

been talking with potential investors who would be prepared to

put significant sums of money into a community lead bid but then you

have to look at the fan-base and look at schemes way you can at get

the fans to put money in so they can get their stake as well. At the

moment they fans takeover is a distant dream. That is what Trevor

Birch insisted -- continues his assessment of the finer sieve. One

former owner may never get the �17 million the loaned the club. He has

security under the assets, and under administration, they could be

sold at a current market value which is significantly less than

the �17 million. There's been some big news for Reading fans today,

with the news that Brian McDermott has signed a new three-and-a-half-

year deal at the club. That's literally kept the Wolves from the

door. McDermott was high on the Premier League club's shortlist to

fill their vacant manager's job. But with McDermott only on a one-

year rolling contract at the Madejski Stadium, incoming Royals

owner Anton Zingaravich has moved quickly to retain his manager's

services. Also on Wolves' radar has been Brighton boss Gus Poyet.

Tonight he's looking for his side to bounce back from their FA Cup

defeat at Liverpool at the weekend. BBC Sussex's Johnny Cantor is live

at the KC Stadium for tonight's league game at Hull. Is any Wolves

interest in Gus now over? You never say never in football. Initial

contract has been made -- contact. There would be apparently a 2

million pound compensation package required. He said the defeat at

Liverpool was a reminder of the work required to reach the Premier

The Shots went ahead on 26 minutes, when Adam Mekki's deflected shot

left Southend keeper Glenn Morris with no chance. The same two

players were involved in the second goal after the break, as Morris

brought Mekki down in the penalty area. Josh Payne made no mistake

from the spot. Aldershot are ten points short of the play-off places.

Well a skiing instructor from Chichester says she is lucky to be

alive after being buried deep in the snow. Rhianna Shaw had a

collision with a snowboarder at a resort near Landeck in the Austrian

mountains. She was buried under a pile of snow for over 15 minutes.

Now she is wanting all skiers and snowboarders going off-piste to

take special safety equipment. I've This is the moment Rehana realised

she had narrowly escaped death. was with five of my friends, for

snowboarders. She is a competent skier, but her choice to go off-

piste with her friends nearly cost her her life. I was at the front

with my friend Alastair and we collided, and suddenly this massive

wave of snow came and hit me and I was just tossed all the way down

the slope, write to the bottom and I couldn't breathe a tall. She had

been caught up in an avalanche and the snow set like concrete around

her. She could not move and could not judge which way was up or down.

I was screaming for help. No one could hear me. You hear about being

buried alive, it is as terrifying as it sounds. After 15 minutes, her

friends eventually found her. Her face was purple and she had no

pulse. They started resuscitation. Five minutes later the medics

arrived and she was airlifted to hospital. I cannot describe the

horror of hearing that she was buried under a metre of snow and

people were desperately trying to find her to save her life. What can

I say, it is about the scariest thing you can imagine. She has

since acquired an avalanche pack, something she says she will never

go without. It comes equipped with three important things. A shovel to

did you out, or whether you are finding. A probe, which you put

together like a tent pole, and most importantly, a transceiver which,

if you are with someone and they are buried, you set it on to

receive and you can find them. is also booking herself into a

course to learn how to use the equipment and is certainly more

safety conscious. I would just make sure I have every bit of equipment,

every bit of knowledge, because after that it is just too

terrifying to take the risk of going unequipped. He takes my

breath away every time I see the rescue pictures. She is very lucky.
