Welcome to South today. In tonight's programme, a tragic

:00:06.:00:10.

accident, but there is criticism of the emergency services who could

:00:10.:00:14.

not help a drowning man in this lake. Remembering those killed in

:00:14.:00:20.

an IRA bomb attack in Aldershot 40 years ago. There was nothing of the

:00:20.:00:24.

day I could remember except the finding out, and then it is just

:00:24.:00:29.

like someone never coming home. hundreds of jobs under threat as

:00:29.:00:33.

one of the largest car dealerships calls and the administrator. And a

:00:33.:00:39.

tribute to a Red Arrows pilot. The winners are shocked at being chosen.

:00:39.:00:45.

We were bouncing off the walls with excitement. I wasn't as pleased as

:00:45.:00:55.
:00:55.:01:04.

my mum was. A I was more shaking am . Recommendations for new training

at all three of Hampshire's emergency services are being made

:01:06.:01:10.

tonight after a man was left floating face down in a three foot

:01:10.:01:12.

deep lake. An inquest hard that 41- year-old Simon Burgess drowned

:01:12.:01:19.

after he had an epileptic seizure while feeding swans at Walpole Lake.

:01:19.:01:22.

At the inquest the coroner said there was a slim chance Mr Burgess

:01:22.:01:25.

could have been saved if he had been rescued faster. He recorded a

:01:25.:01:28.

verdict accidental death. Danielle Glavin is live tonight in our

:01:28.:01:38.
:01:38.:01:40.

Portsmouth studio. The inquest heard there were communication

:01:40.:01:42.

problems at the scene and that the emergency services were fighting

:01:42.:01:46.

against each other. One police officer volunteered to go into the

:01:46.:01:50.

water but his control room told him not to. A fire crew had decided

:01:50.:01:54.

that Mr Burgess was beyond help. The coroner said this was an

:01:54.:01:59.

accidental death but a speedier recovery time in future could save

:01:59.:02:05.

lives. The coroner concluded that Simon Burgess had an epileptic fit

:02:05.:02:09.

in the late and a fire crew was on the scene in five minutes, but when

:02:09.:02:14.

they saw his body face-down, 25 metres from the edge, they decided

:02:14.:02:17.

he was dead and waited for a specialist team to retrieve the

:02:17.:02:22.

body. His family say they will never know if they speedier rescue

:02:22.:02:28.

would have saved him. When a loved one is involved in an accident like

:02:28.:02:30.

this you can only hope that everything possible is being done

:02:30.:02:36.

to save them, regardless of how small the chances of success are.

:02:36.:02:42.

We hope lessons are learned and if someone is saved in the future,

:02:42.:02:49.

then his death would not be in vain. The coroner said there was a slim

:02:49.:02:53.

chance that a speedier recovery could have saved Simon's life, but

:02:53.:02:56.

he said this was an accidental death. But he did have concerns

:02:56.:03:00.

about the future, telling the emergency services that training

:03:00.:03:03.

must improve so that if someone's life is hanging in the balance in a

:03:03.:03:08.

similar incident in future, they know how to assess it and how to

:03:08.:03:13.

respond. During the inquest the fire service said health and safety

:03:13.:03:16.

had not stopped the rescue and they thought Simon Burgess was beyond

:03:16.:03:22.

help, but they accepted the need for training. In was clear to The

:03:22.:03:28.

Crues that the it was decease, but we have made some changes in terms

:03:28.:03:31.

of the authority and in terms of working with other emergency

:03:31.:03:37.

services in the future. And the Ministry of Justice will also get a

:03:37.:03:40.

copy of the coroner's report. He said in the past when the three

:03:40.:03:45.

emergency services had come together to overcome issues that

:03:45.:03:48.

could have happened, and he had this would be the case here and

:03:48.:03:58.
:03:58.:04:15.

that Simon Burgess's death would not be in vain. It was an attack by

:04:15.:04:18.

the IRA which killed seven people and injured 19 others in Aldershot.

:04:18.:04:21.

40 years ago today the IRA bombed the headquarters of the Parachute

:04:21.:04:24.

regiment. Some say it was in retaliation to events in

:04:24.:04:26.

Londonderry when the regiment was involved in disturbances in which

:04:26.:04:29.

thirteen civilians died. Earlier today a wreath-laying ceremony was

:04:29.:04:32.

held and Steve Humphrey has been following the story. It is nice

:04:32.:04:35.

everybody made the effort and it shows people had not forgot. Major

:04:35.:04:40.

John Cracknell was just 100 yards away when it happened. A Big Bang

:04:40.:04:44.

behind me, then all the glass was coming in around me. It was a

:04:45.:04:47.

terrorist attack that shocked the nation and struck at the heart of

:04:47.:04:53.

the military establishment. There was nothing of the day that I could

:04:53.:04:58.

remember except the evening of finding out, and then it was just...

:04:58.:05:04.

Hard to say, it is someone never coming home. Devastating, really.

:05:04.:05:09.

It was a matter of a moment, so adrenalin kicks in and you get on

:05:09.:05:13.

with joining in with your comrades to see what you can do for the

:05:13.:05:18.

people who are injured. The bomb exploded near the Parachute be

:05:18.:05:22.

grade's officers' mess. This run more real on the site of the

:05:22.:05:26.

explosion -- memorial lists the names of the seven people who died.

:05:26.:05:30.

They included five women who worked in the kitchens, a garden and a

:05:30.:05:35.

Catholic priest. 19 people were also injured. John Brown, who now

:05:35.:05:39.

lives on the Isle of Wight, was a patient at the Cambridge Military

:05:39.:05:47.

Hospital in Aldershot when the bomb went off. I heard the explosion and

:05:47.:05:51.

a window a couple of beds away got blown out, and I was lucky not to

:05:51.:05:58.

be in that bed. The next minute, I see a soldier walking through.

:05:58.:06:02.

bomb attack was carried out by the Official IRA. The passing of 40

:06:02.:06:06.

years has not softened dean Mansfield's view of those

:06:06.:06:12.

responsible for his mother's death. If there is a God they believe in,

:06:12.:06:17.

they will be sent to hell soon enough. It won't make a lot of

:06:17.:06:22.

difference. The borough sat nav been bought by a developer -- that

Borough has now been bought by a development at - developer. -- the

:06:41.:06:45.

A man from Berkshire arrested on suspicion of dangerous driving

:06:45.:06:48.

following the death of a 12-year- old boy has been released on bail.

:06:48.:06:50.

The collision happened at a pedestrian crossing in Reading

:06:50.:06:52.

yesterday afternoon. Unconfirmed reports suggest the lights at the

:06:52.:06:55.

crossing on Kings Road weren't operating at the time. The boy,

:06:55.:06:58.

who'd been walking home from school, died from multiple injuries in

:06:58.:07:00.

hospital last night. One of the South's best-known car dealerships

:07:00.:07:03.

has called in the administrators. Seward Wessex Limited employs

:07:03.:07:07.

around 200 staff who now face an uncertain future. The company is

:07:07.:07:10.

part of the larger Seward Motor Group which last year gave its name

:07:10.:07:13.

to AFC Bournemouth's stadium as part of a three-year sponsorship

:07:13.:07:15.

deal. Our Transport Correspondent Paul Clifton is here. Paul, what

:07:15.:07:20.

more can you tell us? Seward is a car dealership with several

:07:20.:07:24.

branches in Dorset. It sells and maintains cars for Vauxhall and

:07:24.:07:27.

Chevrolet. It was founded 23 years ago, and everything seemed to be

:07:27.:07:30.

going well. So well that it became a principal sponsor of AFC

:07:30.:07:34.

Bournemouth. Last year their football ground was renamed the

:07:34.:07:38.

Seward Stadium in a six figure deal. The chairman called it "a huge

:07:38.:07:42.

assistance in the commercial sustainability of the club." Now it

:07:42.:07:52.
:07:52.:07:59.

has all gone wrong. In a statement, I should also point out that Seward

:07:59.:08:01.

dealers and accident repair workshops in Hampshire and West

:08:02.:08:07.

Sussex are separate companies and not in administration. Here's the

:08:07.:08:17.

It is something that unfortunately happens every now and then,

:08:17.:08:22.

particularly in economic down Turks. Drivers are paying 25p more

:08:22.:08:26.

fulfilled than they would have done two years ago, and some are cutting

:08:26.:08:32.

back in their maintenance payments, and this strikes at the local

:08:32.:08:34.

dealerships. Although another dealership will probably come along

:08:34.:08:41.

Sales of new cars aren't great. Last year they fell 4%, and the

:08:41.:08:48.

industry expects a further dip of 1% this year. But because new cars

:08:48.:08:51.

are struggling, more people are buying second hand and in that

:08:51.:08:54.

market prices are going up. So that in itself isn't a reason for Seward

:08:55.:09:01.

to fail. A second man is being questioned in connection with the

:09:02.:09:06.

shooting of a twenty seven-year-old man in Southampton at the weekend.

:09:06.:09:09.

The 38-year-old was arrested on suspicion of attempted murder this

:09:09.:09:12.

morning. Police are still looking for the gun used in the shooting at

:09:12.:09:15.

Townhill Park on Sunday. A 25-year- old man was arrested in London

:09:15.:09:21.

yesterday. A 15-year-old and a twenty five-year-old also arrested

:09:21.:09:24.

have been released on bail. The coroner in an inquest into the

:09:24.:09:27.

death of a Royal Marine in Afghanistan has paid tribute to the

:09:27.:09:29.

sacrifices made by military personnel. 22-year-old Marine James

:09:29.:09:32.

Wright, from Weymouth, was killed in a grenade explosion in Helmand

:09:32.:09:35.

Province last August. Today the West Dorset Coroner said he felt

:09:35.:09:38.

the verdict of unlawful killing was inadequate and recorded a narrative

:09:38.:09:48.
:09:48.:09:50.

verdict. The defence is making closing speeches in the trial of

:09:50.:09:54.

six men alleged to have taken part in a riot at Ford Open Prison in

:09:54.:09:57.

West Sussex. Trouble started at the jail just after midnight on January

:09:57.:09:59.

first last year and several buildings were torched during the

:09:59.:10:03.

disturbance. All six defendants in the dock at Hove Crown Court deny a

:10:03.:10:10.

charge of prison mutiny. Book due in the live at Fratton Park where

:10:10.:10:13.

Portsmouth fans are finding their how they can play a part in the

:10:13.:10:19.

club's future. I am here in West Sussex finding out... How I

:10:19.:10:28.

survived being buried alive in the A Dorset care home has announced it

:10:28.:10:32.

will no longer charge for four weeks after a resident's death. Sue

:10:32.:10:34.

Cann from Christchurch received a letter from Kingsley Healthcare -

:10:34.:10:37.

which runs Highcliffe Nursing Home - saying she hadn't given a month's

:10:37.:10:41.

notice of the death of her father Kenneth. The company says it will

:10:41.:10:49.

now only bill relatives for an extra seven days. Or woman from

:10:49.:10:55.

Sussex says her life has been made a misery by unknown people on

:10:55.:10:59.

Facebook accusing her of being a paedophile or a drug dealer. Nicola

:10:59.:11:02.

Brooks said it first Sussex police said they could not do anything

:11:02.:11:06.

about it, but the case appears to be part of a growing problem posed

:11:06.:11:13.

by tens of thousands of people each year, including children. It is a

:11:13.:11:17.

21st century crime but normally the celebrities are usually victims of

:11:17.:11:24.

cyber bullying. Stars like share Lloyd. I must get at least 10

:11:24.:11:28.

people on twitter the day saying I am a dirty play key. But everyone

:11:28.:11:36.

seems to be at risk. Sheikh posted a supportive message and he later

:11:36.:11:39.

admitted he had taken cocaine, but within minutes Nicola Brooks became

:11:39.:11:48.

a target of hate mail posted anonymously. Yes, it is painful and

:11:48.:11:53.

hurtful and it will never leave me. It won't go away. I was distressed,

:11:53.:11:59.

absolutely distraught at the time and I couldn't believe that people

:11:59.:12:05.

turned on me and gave me the vile abuse when they didn't even know me.

:12:05.:12:15.
:12:15.:12:25.

Other comments were too offensive to broadcast. They said, the police,

:12:25.:12:28.

that there were so many incidents of crimes like this on Facebook and

:12:28.:12:31.

Twitter that they could not looking to everyone. Sussex police told us

:12:31.:12:36.

they are now in touch with Facebook to try and track the offenders down.

:12:36.:12:40.

Facebook denied claims that the systems do not work, pointing to

:12:40.:12:43.

the successful prosecution of a man who had written abuse about a

:12:43.:12:49.

teenage girl who had killed herself. Al large number of children receive

:12:50.:12:55.

abusive messages have hate pages set up about them online, and for

:12:55.:12:59.

some this happens relentlessly over a period of months. Nicola is now

:12:59.:13:04.

working with her lawyer to raise awareness of the crime and says she

:13:04.:13:07.

has spoken out today because bullies should be stood up to,

:13:07.:13:13.

whatever misery they cause. Weymouth council is still

:13:13.:13:17.

investigating cracks in a harbour wall which forced the closure of

:13:17.:13:22.

the town's ferry port. Following the last sailing on Friday, Condor

:13:22.:13:25.

Ferries has moved its services to Poole in Dorset because engineers

:13:25.:13:29.

could not guarantee the integrity of the terminal. The council says

:13:29.:13:33.

it does not know how long it will be closed, as they are still

:13:33.:13:37.

studying implications of the cracks found in the sea wall.

:13:37.:13:41.

The winning design for a memorial to the Red Arrows pilot who died

:13:41.:13:43.

when his plane crashed near Bournemouth last year, has been

:13:43.:13:46.

revealed today. The design, by two primary school children, will be

:13:46.:13:53.

used to create a sculpture. It will stand on the seaside cliff over

:13:53.:13:56.

which the Red Arrows flew just before Flight Lieutenant Jon Egging

:13:56.:14:04.

was killed. Chris Coneybeer reports. For if you just go like that, and

:14:04.:14:08.

then you have won just going like that, and one further away, it will

:14:08.:14:14.

look like it is flying. He s, it would. Penny and George like

:14:14.:14:17.

drawing, and they have produced an image that will be used as the

:14:17.:14:20.

design for a new sculpture, remembering the pilot killed after

:14:20.:14:25.

last year's Red Arrows air show. Children from 39 schools in the

:14:25.:14:29.

area took part in the competition to make the design, and when they

:14:29.:14:34.

won, these two were very pleased. Just bouncing off the walls.

:14:34.:14:40.

Exciting. It was really funny, because we didn't think we would

:14:40.:14:49.

wind. I bet you were pleased. How pleased? Not as pleased as my

:14:49.:14:55.

mum was. I was more shaking than pleased. This is where the art work

:14:55.:15:01.

is going to be placed, on Bournemouth's East Cliff. It is a

:15:01.:15:04.

significant spot for the Red Arrows because over here is the hotel used

:15:04.:15:08.

as a base when they are in the area, and also this part of the cliff is

:15:08.:15:12.

where they align themselves up for their performances coming in from

:15:12.:15:15.

the sea. They hope to have the Scots in place in time for this

:15:16.:15:21.

year's air show. I love the idea that in 50 years, you could be

:15:21.:15:25.

walking along East Cliff with their grandchildren and saying, I was

:15:25.:15:32.

involved in designing that. It is such a privilege. The Red Arrows

:15:32.:15:35.

have been a familiar part of summer shows on the south coast for many

:15:35.:15:40.

years. The fatal crash had a profound effect. This summer a

:15:40.:15:49.

memorial to remember John will be It will be a fitting tribute to a

:15:49.:15:59.
:15:59.:16:04.

Red Arrows pilot. The administrator running Portsmouth Football Club

:16:04.:16:07.

will tonight meet with supporters, to hear their views on how the club

:16:07.:16:09.

should move forward. This follows Pompey entering administration at

:16:09.:16:12.

the High Court on Friday. Kris Temple is live at Fratton Park this

:16:12.:16:15.

evening. But there's further news on developments at the club?

:16:15.:16:21.

first bit of significance if We understand chief exec David Lampitt

:16:21.:16:24.

has left the club, along with another director John Redgate.

:16:25.:16:28.

These on a relatively senior salary, so they have started the top so

:16:28.:16:32.

that will be a financial saving, but for others at the club that is

:16:32.:16:37.

probably the first and second of a number of redundancies that are

:16:37.:16:43.

likely to forehead. If he was previously the head of integrity at

:16:43.:16:51.

the FA before moving to Portsmouth. Just the other day, when Portsmouth

:16:51.:16:54.

ended administration, David Lammy pit was seen outside the High Court

:16:55.:16:58.

and was there as part of the process to go into the

:16:58.:17:06.

administration, which has ultimately led to his downfall. He

:17:06.:17:09.

stood alongside Trevor Birch in a show of unity outside the court

:17:09.:17:12.

following Friday's hearing, but now with Birch looking at cutting costs,

:17:12.:17:15.

he's decided that Lampitt is one of the first sacrificial lambs and

:17:15.:17:18.

it's inevitable that more jobs at the club will have to go too. Now

:17:18.:17:21.

though, fans are gathering behind us for a forum with the club's

:17:21.:17:24.

administator Trevor Birch. He's already welcomed the idea of a

:17:24.:17:26.

possible fans' takeover. And those supporters will go into tonight's

:17:26.:17:32.

forum, keen to find out what it would take to make that a reality.

:17:32.:17:36.

Portsmouth have prided themselves on being a community club, and now

:17:36.:17:38.

the administrators have given credence to a possible fans take

:17:38.:17:43.

over. The previous administrators are not back interest from the

:17:43.:17:46.

groups of funds, but the administrator now invited his

:17:46.:17:51.

interest. They have been tried to get talks with the German for

:17:51.:17:55.

several weeks, and Trevor Birch has agreed to see is in 24 hours, which

:17:55.:17:59.

tells his own story. We are confident and encouraged as a

:17:59.:18:03.

supporters' trust we can put together a bid and we look forward

:18:03.:18:07.

to further negotiations. supporters' own club wouldn't be a

:18:07.:18:12.

new concept. That happens at Brentford and Exeter. Goodwillie is

:18:12.:18:17.

one thing, but raising the money is another. We can do it in a number

:18:17.:18:20.

of ways, but you want to work with potential investors and we have

:18:20.:18:23.

been talking with potential investors who would be prepared to

:18:23.:18:28.

put significant sums of money into a community lead bid but then you

:18:28.:18:31.

have to look at the fan-base and look at schemes way you can at get

:18:31.:18:36.

the fans to put money in so they can get their stake as well. At the

:18:36.:18:40.

moment they fans takeover is a distant dream. That is what Trevor

:18:40.:18:45.

Birch insisted -- continues his assessment of the finer sieve. One

:18:45.:18:50.

former owner may never get the 17 million the loaned the club. He has

:18:50.:18:54.

security under the assets, and under administration, they could be

:18:54.:18:58.

sold at a current market value which is significantly less than

:18:58.:19:08.
:19:08.:19:08.

the 17 million. There's been some big news for Reading fans today,

:19:08.:19:11.

with the news that Brian McDermott has signed a new three-and-a-half-

:19:11.:19:14.

year deal at the club. That's literally kept the Wolves from the

:19:14.:19:16.

door. McDermott was high on the Premier League club's shortlist to

:19:16.:19:21.

fill their vacant manager's job. But with McDermott only on a one-

:19:21.:19:23.

year rolling contract at the Madejski Stadium, incoming Royals

:19:23.:19:25.

owner Anton Zingaravich has moved quickly to retain his manager's

:19:25.:19:35.
:19:35.:19:37.

services. Also on Wolves' radar has been Brighton boss Gus Poyet.

:19:37.:19:40.

Tonight he's looking for his side to bounce back from their FA Cup

:19:40.:19:43.

defeat at Liverpool at the weekend. BBC Sussex's Johnny Cantor is live

:19:43.:19:47.

at the KC Stadium for tonight's league game at Hull. Is any Wolves

:19:47.:19:53.

interest in Gus now over? You never say never in football. Initial

:19:53.:20:01.

contract has been made -- contact. There would be apparently a 2

:20:01.:20:05.

million pound compensation package required. He said the defeat at

:20:05.:20:08.

Liverpool was a reminder of the work required to reach the Premier

:20:08.:20:13.

League, and the work starts again at Hull City. To loan players could

:20:13.:20:17.

make their debuts after joining from Manchester City. Their arrival

:20:17.:20:22.

is an indication of his appeal and a reminder of why Wolverhampton

:20:22.:20:27.

Wanderers hold him in high regard. Live coverage on BBC Sussex. BBC

:20:27.:20:30.

Sussex also has coverage tonight of Crawley's League Two game at home

to Morecambe. Crawley would go back up to fourth with a win at the

:20:34.:20:36.

Broadfield Stadium. In last night's football, Aldershot did Crawley a

:20:36.:20:41.

favour, by beating one of the other team's chasing promotion - Southend.

:20:41.:20:44.

The Shots went ahead on 26 minutes, when Adam Mekki's deflected shot

left Southend keeper Glenn Morris with no chance. The same two

:20:48.:20:51.

players were involved in the second goal after the break, as Morris

:20:51.:20:54.

brought Mekki down in the penalty area. Josh Payne made no mistake

:20:54.:21:00.

from the spot. Aldershot are ten points short of the play-off places.

:21:41.:21:44.

Well a skiing instructor from Chichester says she is lucky to be

:21:44.:21:48.

alive after being buried deep in the snow. Rhianna Shaw had a

collision with a snowboarder at a resort near Landeck in the Austrian

mountains. She was buried under a pile of snow for over 15 minutes.

Now she is wanting all skiers and snowboarders going off-piste to

I was screaming for help. No one could hear me. You hear about being

friends eventually found her. Her face was purple and she had no

pulse. They started resuscitation. Five minutes later the medics

arrived and she was airlifted to hospital. I cannot describe the

:23:12.:23:17.

horror of hearing that she was buried under a metre of snow and

:23:17.:23:21.

people were desperately trying to find her to save her life. What can

every bit of knowledge, because after that it is just too

terrifying to take the risk of going unequipped. He takes my

A rout -- about 150 people die from avalanches round the world, but
