pretty soggy. Thank you. That is all from the BBC. We can

:00:00.:00:00.

Hello, I'm Sally Taylor. Welcome to South Today. In tonight's programme:

:00:00.:00:10.

A kick in the teeth ` Meals on Wheels volunteers unhappy at their

:00:11.:00:16.

changing role. I think we have really been treated abominably. Not

:00:17.:00:20.

only me, everybody am the older volunteers.

:00:21.:00:24.

Feeling less than Grand, the Isle of Wight hotel who's future is in

:00:25.:00:26.

doubt. Coughs and sneezes spread diseases,

:00:27.:00:29.

so will this entice hospital staff to get their flu jab?

:00:30.:00:41.

And Gordon the Great is back, signing up to a new venture at

:00:42.:00:43.

Hampshire Cricket. It's a lifeline to the vulnerable

:00:44.:01:00.

that relies on the good deeds of others. Meals on Wheels is not just

:01:01.:01:04.

about delivering decent food but the chance for a chat with the person

:01:05.:01:08.

who brings it. The service in West Sussex, run by the Royal Voluntary

:01:09.:01:11.

Service, is being upgraded with more hot meals. But the food will no

:01:12.:01:16.

longer be delivered by volunteers ` and some are so upset at the changes

:01:17.:01:20.

they're called it a "kick in the teeth". Sean Killick reports.

:01:21.:01:30.

You have got chicken and vegetable pie today. Lunch has arrived today

:01:31.:01:38.

for this 89`year`old man. The Meals on Wheels service has been a

:01:39.:01:43.

lifeline for him for some time now. I started when I lost my wife. So it

:01:44.:01:51.

is quite important to you? Absolutely, I rely on it completely.

:01:52.:01:58.

The food was prepared at this site in Bognor Regis. This site will

:01:59.:02:03.

close next month as the charity brings a renewed contract with just

:02:04.:02:10.

one site remaining. In future, meals will only be delivered by staff

:02:11.:02:14.

drivers such as Gerald. Not volunteers, whose role will be

:02:15.:02:19.

restricted to carrying out safety and well`being checks while helping

:02:20.:02:23.

heat food. Many of the volunteer drivers, such as this man, are angry

:02:24.:02:29.

at the change. He has been delivering meals for several years

:02:30.:02:33.

and believes the new stuff delivery drivers will not have as much time

:02:34.:02:39.

for the elderly clients. They get used to coming in, doing little

:02:40.:02:42.

things for them. They are going to miss us. I do not think the van

:02:43.:02:46.

drivers that are coming down now have got the time to do what we do.

:02:47.:02:53.

The Royal Voluntary Service has a long history of helping older people

:02:54.:02:58.

independently. The man who runs it says he hopes the West Sussex

:02:59.:03:01.

volunteers will continue with them and enjoy greater flexibility for

:03:02.:03:08.

how long they visit the elderly. Instead of somebody having to zoom

:03:09.:03:15.

around, but we can find a way to be more flexible and give more time.

:03:16.:03:20.

West Sussex county council says this is not a cost `based decision.

:03:21.:03:24.

Meanwhile the existing staff will have to apply for one of the 39 new

:03:25.:03:30.

kitchen or van driver jobs. Let's get some answers to the

:03:31.:03:33.

volunteers' concerns by speaking to the RVS Chief Executive David

:03:34.:03:36.

McCullough who joins me live from London. Thank you very much for

:03:37.:03:41.

joining us. You may not have intended it, but you do seem to have

:03:42.:03:45.

upset some of your valid tubal `` valuable volunteers. If we manage to

:03:46.:03:53.

do that, that is bad. Nothing that we do can be done without our

:03:54.:03:56.

volunteers, they are the lifeblood of the organisation. We have got a

:03:57.:04:00.

job of work to do, myself and my team, to make sure that we explain

:04:01.:04:07.

things more clearly and better for the volunteers, because the last

:04:08.:04:10.

thing I want is to lose people. The key thing we are trying to do is

:04:11.:04:14.

what the older people are asking us for, to have more time with the

:04:15.:04:18.

people that visit them and more conversation, as well as a great

:04:19.:04:24.

meal. On the face of it, it looks as if you are asking them to be carers?

:04:25.:04:30.

We are absolutely not doing that. There is a real misunderstanding

:04:31.:04:33.

here. Volunteers can deliver the meals are they want to but the right

:04:34.:04:39.

training. We are adding people is not to be social workers, but spend

:04:40.:04:44.

time, going, have a chat. If we can make that valuable two minutes of

:04:45.:04:48.

time valuable ten minutes of time, 12 minutes of time, that is normally

:04:49.:04:53.

the only person somebody will see in the day. Do you think there has been

:04:54.:04:58.

a lack of June invitation on your part? `` communist nation. It is

:04:59.:05:08.

down to me and my team to communicate properly with

:05:09.:05:12.

volunteers. If we have not done that, I need to get down there and

:05:13.:05:15.

chat with everybody and understand what they feel we can do to make the

:05:16.:05:21.

service better make sure the part our volunteers play is the part we

:05:22.:05:24.

want to play. I will go and see them next he `` next week, absolutely.

:05:25.:05:31.

Thank you very much indeed. The navigator of a yacht which

:05:32.:05:35.

collided with an oil tanker in the Solent has described the chaotic

:05:36.:05:37.

moments surrounding the impact. Michael Shrives was part of the crew

:05:38.:05:41.

racing the Atalanta during the 2011 Cowes Week. The yacht's skipper and

:05:42.:05:45.

owner, former Royal Naval officer, Lieutenant Roland Wilson, denies

:05:46.:05:47.

three charges of contravening maritime regulations. Alex Forsyth

:05:48.:05:57.

reports. Like rabbits in headlights, that is

:05:58.:06:01.

how the navigator of this yacht described the moments on board

:06:02.:06:04.

before it collided with an oil tanker. One crew member jumped

:06:05.:06:11.

overboard and was rescued. Another suffered head injuries. Michael

:06:12.:06:13.

Shrives was part of the crew racing the Atalanta during Cowes Week. He

:06:14.:06:17.

says she was doing around seven knots when, possibly because of a

:06:18.:06:23.

wind change, she came to a sudden stop before the collision. He said

:06:24.:06:27.

there came a point it was too late to do anything to avoid it. The

:06:28.:06:32.

court heard that Michael Shrives is a Royal Naval Commander and

:06:33.:06:36.

experienced sailor. He said the crew had seen the tanker as she made her

:06:37.:06:41.

way up the Solent. They expected her to turn as she headed towards the

:06:42.:06:48.

oil refinery. He said the Atalanta took a course that they thought

:06:49.:06:52.

allowed her to pass a safe distance away. The court heard that the

:06:53.:06:57.

tanker had taken action to avoid a motor cruiser that it had trouble.

:06:58.:07:11.

Today, the jury were told: The prosecution say the skipper,

:07:12.:07:15.

Lieutenant Roland Wilson, was sailing too close to the tanker. He

:07:16.:07:20.

denies failing to keep a proper lookout. The trial continues.

:07:21.:07:27.

West Sussex County Council is to vote on plans to cut its youth

:07:28.:07:31.

services department by nearly a third. The council has already made

:07:32.:07:35.

cuts to its youth support and development service ` but it says it

:07:36.:07:39.

needs to save a further 50 full time posts, which will affect more than

:07:40.:07:44.

100 people. The council says it has to make difficult decisions and will

:07:45.:07:47.

still help vulnerable young people in the areas of highest need.

:07:48.:07:51.

Extra carriages have been unveiled by South West Trains. But they're

:07:52.:07:54.

not exactly new ` passengers may remember these on the Gatwick

:07:55.:07:58.

Express a few years ago. They're being used to make longer trains on

:07:59.:08:01.

services from Berkshire to Waterloo, adding more than 20,000 rush hour

:08:02.:08:04.

seats every morning. And they will use the former Eurostar

:08:05.:08:06.

international terminal at Waterloo which reopens tomorrow. Our

:08:07.:08:08.

transport correspondent Paul Clifton reports.

:08:09.:08:17.

Dragged into the depot by a diesel. The newly refurbished carriage. 60

:08:18.:08:23.

of these will be added to trains between Berkshire and Waterloo.

:08:24.:08:28.

Today, most have eight carriages. Soon they will have ten. They are

:08:29.:08:34.

just now designed for commuter routes, so there would be less

:08:35.:08:38.

baggage space but more passenger space. In terms of the regular

:08:39.:08:42.

users, there will certainly be more space. These were some of the first

:08:43.:08:48.

trains built after the railways were privatised in the mid`1990s. On the

:08:49.:08:52.

Gatwick express, these distinctive noses give them the name Darth

:08:53.:08:58.

Vader, after the character in Star Wars. This is a less flashy,

:08:59.:09:09.

utilitarian carriage. This first carriage had been expected last

:09:10.:09:17.

June. Or supplier underestimated the complexity, especially with

:09:18.:09:22.

rebuilding the cabs. 60 platforms have also had to be made longer and

:09:23.:09:26.

new electricity substations installed. These refurbished trains

:09:27.:09:33.

will bring an extra 23,000 seat in the morning rush`hour, as they are

:09:34.:09:39.

introduced over the next year. They will use the former Eurostar

:09:40.:09:47.

platforms at Waterloo International. It's been revealed that Southampton

:09:48.:09:50.

City Council spent a quarter of a million pounds last year cleaning up

:09:51.:09:53.

after fly tippers. New Government figures show nearly 8,000 incidents

:09:54.:09:56.

were reported in the city ` ranking it in the top 10% in England. Most

:09:57.:10:00.

of the fly tipping involved household waste.

:10:01.:10:06.

Still to come in this evening's South Today: The youngsters

:10:07.:10:09.

preparing to go on court with some of the world's biggest tennis stars.

:10:10.:10:19.

With winter approaching, the flu season is just around the corner and

:10:20.:10:22.

it's likely to affect tens of thousands of people. Hospitals have

:10:23.:10:28.

been told to give vaccinations to their own staff. Last year, many

:10:29.:10:33.

struggle to get anywhere near that figure, so they are now using a

:10:34.:10:36.

range of incentives to hit their targets. Our health correspondent

:10:37.:10:43.

spent the day at a hospital near Portsmouth where teams of nurses are

:10:44.:10:49.

on the prowl. Emma Fisher is a nurse with a list.

:10:50.:10:54.

It is her job to get all 130 staff vaccinated on her ward. Once you

:10:55.:11:01.

approach people and explain it, I try to ease their worry. It is just

:11:02.:11:07.

talking them through it, making them comfortable as you would with

:11:08.:11:12.

patients. They are your patient for that moment in time. Vaccinating

:11:13.:11:17.

staff also protects vulnerable patients like this baby, 15 weeks

:11:18.:11:23.

premature. But getting people to have the jab is not always easy. So

:11:24.:11:29.

far, 35% of staff have been done, nurses have the best rates, junior

:11:30.:11:37.

doctors have the worst. The target is 75%, which is very ambitious. We

:11:38.:11:43.

have 52 clinics across the trust. We are working, early and late

:11:44.:11:49.

clinics, weekend clinics, to try and get as many staff as we can. The key

:11:50.:11:54.

issue is that we need staff to come in and have their vaccine to protect

:11:55.:11:58.

themselves and their patients and families. All hospitals are trying

:11:59.:12:08.

new ways to get staff to have the jab. At Poole, they have made a kung

:12:09.:12:17.

fu fighting video. Back in Portsmouth, every case of suspected

:12:18.:12:21.

flu, inpatient or staff, is tested here. This will give us a result,

:12:22.:12:28.

somewhere in the region of three to three and a half hours, the sample

:12:29.:12:32.

had been taken. It is very accurate and sensitive and specific. It is as

:12:33.:12:37.

a result we can believe. For Emma, the work goes on. So far, 60 staff

:12:38.:12:45.

of food vaccinated `` 60 staff have been vaccinated.

:12:46.:12:48.

The future of staff and inmates at Reading Prison will be discussed

:12:49.:12:52.

tonight. The prison is due to shut in December. However, since learning

:12:53.:12:55.

of the closure last month, Reading Borough Council says it has had no

:12:56.:12:58.

contact from the Ministry of Justice. This evening, the council

:12:59.:13:02.

will start drawing up a plan looking at possible future uses for the

:13:03.:13:10.

Grade Two listed building. May contain nuts. You have seen it on

:13:11.:13:14.

food packets, but not for much longer. From the end of next year,

:13:15.:13:20.

new food labelling rules come into force which change the way

:13:21.:13:25.

information is displayed. Including specific details of ingredients

:13:26.:13:28.

which might cause allergies. It is a big change, in particular for

:13:29.:13:32.

restaurants. And food businesses today got a chance to find out what

:13:33.:13:36.

it will mean at a conference organised by a campaigner from

:13:37.:13:39.

Eastleigh. Choosing where to eat out can be a

:13:40.:13:43.

frustrating process for allergy sufferers. Campaigner Michelle

:13:44.:13:44.

Berriedale`Johnson says restaurants who give detailed allergy

:13:45.:13:48.

information are in the minority. But that will have to change from next

:13:49.:13:51.

year. Customers will have a legal right to know if what's on the menu

:13:52.:13:59.

contains allergens. They don't have to have it written, they can tell

:14:00.:14:02.

them about it, but they have to be able to tell them accurately. This

:14:03.:14:09.

EU legislation will govern all of our food regulations and come from

:14:10.:14:13.

Brussels. It means that it is slow and clunky to get there, but at

:14:14.:14:17.

least it means anywhere you go in Europe now the regulations are

:14:18.:14:21.

exactly the same. The list of 14 includes some established allergens

:14:22.:14:24.

such as all types of shellfish. Peanuts and other nuts will both

:14:25.:14:27.

have to be listed and not lumped together, and less well known

:14:28.:14:29.

allergens include sulphur dioxide used as a preservative and

:14:30.:14:32.

ingredients derived from the lupin plant. Today's conference in

:14:33.:14:39.

Southampton aimed to spread the word about the changes. The organiser,

:14:40.:14:43.

Eastleigh food allergy sufferer Caroline Benjamin, was to be found

:14:44.:14:46.

in the kitchen overseeing a lunch menu designed to show off food free

:14:47.:14:51.

from allergies. Her new business offers training to those who'll be

:14:52.:14:57.

affected by the regulations. I think it is great to be a struggle,

:14:58.:15:01.

especially for smaller businesses, because there is going to be a cost

:15:02.:15:05.

implication for them. They are going to have to follow it through. They

:15:06.:15:08.

will have to start thinking about it now. It possibly clears up some of

:15:09.:15:15.

the grey areas. When you know what you must do rather than may do, it

:15:16.:15:22.

offers clarity. We are cooking everything from scratch, we know

:15:23.:15:25.

what is in our food, we can happily offer customers what they are

:15:26.:15:27.

looking for. Trading Standards will enforce the law, which will also

:15:28.:15:30.

require clear labelling of allergens on packaged food. They admit

:15:31.:15:36.

policing the changes won't be easy. In Southampton, we have hundreds of

:15:37.:15:41.

takeaways, restaurants, sandwich shops. It applies completely across

:15:42.:15:44.

the board. There is a lot of them and not many of us. Maximum fines

:15:45.:15:48.

for breaking the law will be around 5,000 pounds but today's conference

:15:49.:15:51.

focused on avoiding the penalties and making the most of the business

:15:52.:15:54.

opportunities in serving the UK's 21 million allergy sufferers with the

:15:55.:15:57.

right food combined with the right information. Millions of pounds will

:15:58.:16:09.

be poured into improving Wiltshire's roads. The county

:16:10.:16:14.

council has decided. 150 miles of road is to be resurfaced every year

:16:15.:16:19.

for the next six years. It will cost an extra ?52 million. It is hoped

:16:20.:16:22.

this move will clear the maintenance backlog in the county.

:16:23.:16:26.

It's called the Grand hotel and in its heyday it was. But time and the

:16:27.:16:30.

elements have taken their toll on the Art Deco building which occupies

:16:31.:16:33.

a prominent site in Sandown. Campaigners want it restored but the

:16:34.:16:37.

owners want to demolish it and build a new hotel. Today the Isle of Wight

:16:38.:16:41.

council was asked to decide it's fate. James Ingham reports.

:16:42.:16:49.

It's a building well past its best ` to some an eyesore, to others a

:16:50.:16:53.

unique piece of history that must be preserved. The Grand hotel has stood

:16:54.:17:01.

on Sandown's seafront for 75 years. It was a premier destination. But

:17:02.:17:09.

it's been empty for more than a year. Pat Lutley's father and uncles

:17:10.:17:15.

built the hotel. She remembers the Grand in better days. At that time,

:17:16.:17:23.

when it was new, it was all pink and white. And the awning all around the

:17:24.:17:28.

edge was pink and white stripes. It was very grand. And there were lots

:17:29.:17:34.

of palm trees and plants all around it as well. You could have been in

:17:35.:17:47.

Nice. It was quite beautiful. It wasn't long finished when the Second

:17:48.:17:50.

World War broke out. The basement was taken over as a control room for

:17:51.:17:54.

the Pluto project, overseeing fuel pumping through pipelines to the

:17:55.:17:57.

Allies in France. But nothing remains of that hub, and planning

:17:58.:18:00.

officials say the Art Deco features aren't particularly noteworthy so

:18:01.:18:03.

there's no reason the building can't be demolished. This has been an

:18:04.:18:09.

important building, a very nice building, but just no longer fit for

:18:10.:18:14.

purpose. Sandown is a beautiful town, but one of the problems we

:18:15.:18:18.

have got is we have a small number of derelict or semiderelict

:18:19.:18:21.

buildings that are letting the town down. We can start the regeneration

:18:22.:18:26.

process here if this application is approved today. But it hasn't been.

:18:27.:18:32.

In the past hour, councillors rejected the plans, Devin

:18:33.:18:36.

campaigners hope that the hotel will one day be restored to its former

:18:37.:18:42.

glory. This year's warm summer has brought

:18:43.:18:45.

a welcome tourism boost to the region. The Isle of Wight saw a ?21

:18:46.:18:49.

million increase in the amount of money spent by tourists, thanks to

:18:50.:18:54.

the high temperatures. VisitEngland said more than half of attractions

:18:55.:18:57.

nationwide saw a rise in bookings over the holiday months. Onto sport,

:18:58.:19:06.

we will start with one of the greatest in cricket.

:19:07.:19:11.

It was a great summer for cricket. It was back in 1973 as well. Gordon

:19:12.:19:25.

Greenidge spent a lot of his youth in Redding as well, but one of that

:19:26.:19:32.

great Caribbean generation. Greenidge was at the Ageas Bowl to

:19:33.:19:35.

see one of the newest projects by the Hampshire Cricket Community

:19:36.:19:38.

Trust. And to mark his appearance there was a Caribbean feel to the

:19:39.:19:42.

occasion. Gordon Greenidge is one of the faces

:19:43.:19:47.

of the Calypso cricket era, an era which saw West Indian players on top

:19:48.:19:58.

of the world. My word. His exploits for Hampshire are the stuff of

:19:59.:20:01.

legend as well, a championship winner and a welcome choice to open

:20:02.:20:06.

the new centre. A project from the Hampshire cricket community trust.

:20:07.:20:12.

Being back at Hampshire and opening the centre which I know will be a

:20:13.:20:15.

great benefit to the schools and pupils within the area. And also, it

:20:16.:20:25.

is hoped that by opening the doors, that they will take a bigger

:20:26.:20:30.

interest in cricket. The centre has cutting`edge technology, and one of

:20:31.:20:34.

the scheme is already in place sees these youngsters teaching older

:20:35.:20:37.

generations more about an increasingly online world. It is

:20:38.:20:42.

time we start contributing back to our community. It is just another

:20:43.:20:48.

step in that direction. The centre is showing off Caribbean cricket's

:20:49.:20:52.

influence on Hampshire during Black history month. I hope it is not just

:20:53.:20:59.

players from the Caribbean, but the relationship that is formed which

:21:00.:21:07.

will continue. That's championship success, time flies. I can't

:21:08.:21:14.

remember that far back. It was good to be part of the championship team

:21:15.:21:20.

of that year. I think we won the championship with perhaps the least

:21:21.:21:24.

team Hampshire have had over the years. It was good, and I am very

:21:25.:21:30.

pleased to have been part of it. Very pleased to see Gordon Greenidge

:21:31.:21:33.

back in the South. In football, Portsmouth bid to make

:21:34.:21:36.

it five games unbeaten in all competitions when they play their

:21:37.:21:39.

second home game in four days tonight. 15,000 saw them beat Bury

:21:40.:21:42.

on Saturday. Tonight, Wycombe are the visitors. John Marquis should

:21:43.:21:45.

feature having extended his loan spell for another month from

:21:46.:21:50.

Millwall. Away from Fratton Park, Oxford are

radio. Tucked away in a sports centre in

:22:04.:22:06.

Hampshire this week, a group of school children are being put

:22:07.:22:09.

through their paces as they prepare to be ball kids for the world's top

:22:10.:22:13.

men's tennis players. They'll be on court at the O2 Arena next month and

:22:14.:22:18.

Ed Sherry reports on their training. This is Boot Camp, tennis style. The

:22:19.:22:25.

youngsters on Hampshire this week have been short listed from 14

:22:26.:22:28.

regional trials. They are ready to serve the world's best tennis

:22:29.:22:32.

players as ball kids at the ATP finals. We have been learning

:22:33.:22:37.

different ball skills, balance, skill, stamina, speed skills as

well. You have to stay in focus and if you mess your bit up, you will

muck up for the whole team. You have to stay alert the whole time and

:22:49.:22:53.

just make sure you don't make a mistake. The kids will be mixing on

:22:54.:22:58.

court with superstars like Rafa Nadal. I am excited about going but

:22:59.:23:04.

in front of all those people you are wondering, can you do this? I want

:23:05.:23:12.

them to be moulded into a lean machine. A real inner confidence

:23:13.:23:16.

that they know exactly what their job is on court. And that they will

:23:17.:23:23.

enjoy the experience. The tournament begins on November the 4th, these

:23:24.:23:27.

ball kids will be ready. They will need to be. It can be

:23:28.:23:32.

quite fiery on court if you make a mistake. I would pay money to be a

:23:33.:23:42.

ball kid if Rafa Nadal is playing. It's a bit of a celebration now, it

:23:43.:23:47.

started life as a pilot idea when there was a demand for local radio

:23:48.:23:53.

stations. 30 years ago, BBC and Eyton `` BBC Radio Brighton began

falling to around eight to 13 Celsius. A complete contrast in

the weekend with bright spells. Thank you very much. Keep those

pictures coming in. Tomorrow's sport, something really interesting.

:27:13.:27:18.

:27:24.:27:30.

described his recovery as a miracle. The era of Gareth Bale and Theo
