Good evening. I'm Laura Trant with the news in the south.

:00:11.:00:15.

One of Portsmouth's Liberal Democrat councillors has resigned her cabinet

:00:16.:00:19.

post in protest over how the party has handled the suspension of MP

:00:20.:00:23.

Mike Hancock. On Friday, the city's Liberal Democrats decided he should

:00:24.:00:26.

be allowed to stay in his Cabinet post, although he has been suspended

:00:27.:00:29.

from the party amid claims of sexual misconduct. Councillor Eleanor Scott

:00:30.:00:35.

disagreed with that decision. Mike Hancock denies all the allegations.

:00:36.:00:45.

Residents have described experiencing a mini tornado in parts

:00:46.:00:50.

of the South yesterday afternoon. Trees were torn down, including this

:00:51.:00:53.

one in West Sussex, which fell onto a house. Thousands of people were

:00:54.:00:57.

without electricity in Sussex and Surrey, although most are now

:00:58.:00:58.

reconnected. Meanwhile, residents are pressing

:00:59.:01:01.

the Prime Minister to make flood defences an urgent priority in the

:01:02.:01:04.

Hampshire village of Hambledon. The area has been very badly affected by

:01:05.:01:08.

this year's floods, with weeks of disruption and road closures.

:01:09.:01:15.

It was at the top of the skirting. Ian was a GP in Hambledon for many

:01:16.:01:19.

years but this is a situation he can't remedy. Southern Water and

:01:20.:01:23.

Hampshire County Council know that it floods and nothing really has

:01:24.:01:31.

been done. I visited the village on Monday, when water levels were

:01:32.:01:35.

worryingly high. Flood cellars were at bursting point and roads had

:01:36.:01:39.

turned into rivers. Almost a week on, not much has changed. Temporary

:01:40.:01:42.

measures, like 15,000 sandbags and an additional sewage pipe are

:01:43.:01:44.

helping, but it is permanent solutions the community wants to

:01:45.:01:50.

see. Shaun Woodward, from Hampshire County Council, has taken the issue

:01:51.:01:54.

up with the Prime Minister. I have put it to the Prime Minister, when I

:01:55.:01:59.

met him a couple of weeks go, saying we have got these problems, do you

:02:00.:02:02.

know where Hambledon is? Yes, he did, he is a cricket fan, so he had

:02:03.:02:07.

certainly heard of Hambledon. I am hoping the Environment Agency will

:02:08.:02:09.

agree that, yes, Hambledon is the top priority in Hampshire and we

:02:10.:02:13.

should get the money from the Environment Agency to do this

:02:14.:02:17.

desperately needed work. How much money are we talking here? Around

:02:18.:02:23.

?3.5 million. The ground water isn't going anywhere just yet. There is a

:02:24.:02:27.

ten`day delay between it raining and the water surfacing. It will be

:02:28.:02:32.

weeks before this village returns to normal.

:02:33.:02:36.

All this rain is causing problems for wildlife and, ironically, that

:02:37.:02:39.

includes some creatures who usually love the wet. The Arundel Wetland

:02:40.:02:43.

Centre in West Sussex has had to move some of its wildfowl away to

:02:44.:02:48.

Gloucestershire. Roger Finn reports. The Wildfowl and Wetlands Trust at

:02:49.:02:52.

Arundel was fully open today, but it has been partially closed for most

:02:53.:02:57.

of January. The centre is a refuge for wildfowl and home to a

:02:58.:03:00.

collection of 250 rare and threatened birds. This winter, it

:03:01.:03:04.

has experienced the worst flooding in its history. Many pathways were

:03:05.:03:10.

underwater. And some of the hides were swamped. You would think this

:03:11.:03:14.

would make a paradise for wetland birds, but it is not necessarily so.

:03:15.:03:18.

Initially, the flooding causes a huge boom of food. Seeds and insects

:03:19.:03:25.

get wafted out of the ground but then, very quickly, that food supply

:03:26.:03:28.

disappears and anything they usually would reach is under too much water.

:03:29.:03:35.

Your diving ducks, they are fine, they can dive, but your dabblling

:03:36.:03:38.

ducks, they need to find somewhere not as flooded. There have also been

:03:39.:03:43.

problems for the captive birds. 60 rare geese and swans had to be moved

:03:44.:03:47.

to the Trust Centre at Slimbridge, because their enclosure was almost

:03:48.:03:51.

entirely underwater. Elsewhere, palettes have been put into

:03:52.:03:54.

enclosures to give the birds somewhere to perch. One is also

:03:55.:03:59.

being put under this black necked swans' nest, so that rising water

:04:00.:04:02.

doesn't swamp the four eggs laid here. And it is not just the

:04:03.:04:08.

birdlife that is causing concern. Some of the things we have seen,

:04:09.:04:11.

really desperate to get some high ground, are things like moles, we

:04:12.:04:15.

have seen swimming. Things like our water voles ` their winter store

:04:16.:04:19.

food will have been flooded out, so again, they are quite desperate to

:04:20.:04:23.

feed. Though the water levels have now fallen, the floods may soon be

:04:24.:04:27.

back here as there is even more rain forecast and high tides due at the

:04:28.:04:41.

end of the week. Some football news and Southampton

:04:42.:04:44.

have drawn Sunderland in the FA Cup fifth round draw, following their

:04:45.:04:48.

comfortable win over Yeovilton yesterday. And Brighton have drawn

:04:49.:04:57.

Hull City. That have a look at the weather now,

:04:58.:05:00.

with Emily. Good evening. After the wet weather

:05:01.:05:04.

today, some colder weather to look out for tonight. As temperatures

:05:05.:05:08.

drop away, the risk of some ice on the roads through tonight and into

:05:09.:05:11.

tomorrow morning. We have some wintry showers with us as well.

:05:12.:05:15.

Through the evening and overnight, the showers are a mix of rain and

:05:16.:05:19.

sleet but also some snow, particularly for the hills but even

:05:20.:05:22.

to lower levels at times. As it showers, it could be quite localised

:05:23.:05:26.

where we see snowfall accumulating but temperatures are generally

:05:27.:05:28.

getting down close to freezing, so anywhere can see some icy stretches

:05:29.:05:31.

for tomorrow morning. So a few wintry showers with this at first

:05:32.:05:35.

tomorrow as well. As we move into the afternoon and temperatures lift,

:05:36.:05:38.

we're looking at a generally more rain showers but still a few heavier

:05:39.:05:41.

showers are possible. Windy through tomorrow and temperatures up to nine

:05:42.:05:44.

degrees. It remains unsettled with further rain to watch out for on

:05:45.:05:47.

Tuesday. After that, drier but colder.

:05:48.:05:49.

But snow for some. That's all from us for now. We are

:05:50.:05:56.

back at 10:15pm, in the meantime, plenty of updates on the BBC website

:05:57.:05:58.

and local radio. Goodbye for now. Until then, plenty more news on our

:05:59.:06:02.

website. Bye-bye. Good evening.
