Several hundred residents in a West Sussex village staged a protest this

morning to try to stave off potential housing development near

Worthing. They claim that Persimmon Homes are preparing a planning

application to build nearly four hundred houses on the edge of

Ferring, The protestors say there's been no public consultation, and

argue that the scale of the development would overwhelm what

they say is an already overcrowded area. It is not a question of not

wanting anybody, we do not have room. Our doctors are at full

stretch and capacity. Roads are in gridlock in the mornings. Our

schools are all at capacity. We simply cannot take that many more

people. Persimmon Homes had no one available for interview ` but issued

a statement saying the plot of land adjacent to Goring Station is owned

by Persimmon Homes, and a topographical survey was recently

carried out. We have always made it clear to Worthing Borough Council

that this site is available, and would be suitable for development.

A criminal investigation has been started into a light aircraft crash

three years ago at Witchampton in Dorset in which a man died. Orlando

Rogers, who was 26 and a passenger in the 1930s Tiger Moth biplane,

died after being airlifted to hospital. But the aircraft's pilot,

Scott Hoyle from Broadstone, survived. Dorset Police have

confirmed they're investigating the circumstances that led to the

accident. They'll present their findings to the Crown Prosecution

Service. As the South's farmers struggle to

recover from the recent floods, there are concerns about the level

of government grants on offer to help them rebuild. The condition of

this field on a 1700 acre farm in Oxfordshire is a reflection of what

many are having to cope with. And though the ?5,000 available for each

farm will be welcome, the man who farms here is concerned it won't go

far. The ?5,000, I will have spent it on this field and that is not the

cost of doing the work, or the loss of the production through the milk,

the beef, through everything else. Don't get me wrong, we are grateful

for the many, it is not have to be done, but excuse the pun, it is a
