Crackdown on violent drug gangs ` Hampshire Police extend the fight in | :00:00. | :00:17.
one of their biggest ever campaigns. Deadly dust ` the beach huts in | :00:18. | :00:22.
Poole contaminated with asbestos. Green is the colour ` celebrating St | :00:23. | :00:25.
Patrick's day and everyone gets a shamrock. | :00:26. | :00:30.
And it's Pup Idol ` the search for an operatic dog to take centre stage | :00:31. | :00:39.
in La Boheme. Whichever dog deserves it `` gets it | :00:40. | :00:44.
deserves it. They are all so lovely. A victim shot in both legs. Four men | :00:45. | :00:58.
stabbed in one night. And a fatal shooting described as a gang | :00:59. | :01:01.
execution. These are some of the outbreaks of drug`related crime in | :01:02. | :01:04.
just one city, Southampton, in the past two years. Police across the | :01:05. | :01:08.
South are worried about the spread of London drug gangs onto the south | :01:09. | :01:11.
coast. Two years ago, Hampshire officers launched a crackdown on the | :01:12. | :01:14.
gangs, called Operation Fortress. They are now spreading this across | :01:15. | :01:17.
the county in one of their biggest ever campaigns. Emma Vardy has this | :01:18. | :01:23.
exclusive report. Hampshire police say they've made | :01:24. | :01:26.
more than 300 arrests since their crackdown on drug dealers began. | :01:27. | :01:30.
Most recently, a gang from London were jailed for a total of 90 years | :01:31. | :01:35.
for the shooting of Jahmel Jones at a flat in St Mary's in Southampton. | :01:36. | :01:44.
Police have put a number of dealers behind bars under the operation, but | :01:45. | :01:48.
say they are always up against the threat of new organised gangs moving | :01:49. | :01:52.
in, often coming here from London or further afield. | :01:53. | :01:55.
This man was formerly a low level dealer in Southampton and himself a | :01:56. | :01:59.
heroin addict for many years. He spoke to us about the way the drugs | :02:00. | :02:06.
gangs operate. A lot of people I out there using drugs. It creates | :02:07. | :02:09.
competition between the dealers. Once they are established, they will | :02:10. | :02:16.
rely on people from Southampton, addicts, to take out of the | :02:17. | :02:21.
business. They will coerce them. If you are shifting thousands of pounds | :02:22. | :02:24.
of money and drugs, you need security. The simplest thing to do | :02:25. | :02:27.
is get a gun. This AK47 was found by police at a | :02:28. | :02:31.
house in Lymmington along with a large quantity of Benzocaine, a | :02:32. | :02:35.
substance used to cut other drugs. Before now Operation Fortress was | :02:36. | :02:38.
predominantly targeting Southampton, but it's now being rolled out across | :02:39. | :02:46.
the rest of Hampshire. During the course of the operation, we have | :02:47. | :02:49.
been successfully recovering far wrong from the streets. We can | :02:50. | :02:53.
demonstrate the numbers of drug`related violence crimes has | :02:54. | :02:57.
dropped significantly. Far more users are going in for treatment | :02:58. | :02:59.
now. At the Bridge, a drugs advice centre | :03:00. | :03:03.
and needle exchange in Southampton, the team have been working with | :03:04. | :03:06.
police to try and help vulnerable addicts who've become victims of | :03:07. | :03:12.
violence and intimidation. They are so fearful of what they | :03:13. | :03:20.
have got mixed up in that often they can't see the woods for the trees. | :03:21. | :03:24.
They can't see a way out. We are saying, look, come into get | :03:25. | :03:29.
treatment. You don't have to leave that lifestyle. We can offer you a | :03:30. | :03:35.
way out. `` lead that lifestyle. In St Mary's, where a number of | :03:36. | :03:38.
violent drug related incidents have taken place, the community says it's | :03:39. | :03:42.
trying to get rid of the stigma attached to the area. | :03:43. | :03:45.
You have got no more families living here, decent people. It is just on | :03:46. | :03:51.
those S state to have individuals who tend to stand out. `` Estates. | :03:52. | :04:00.
Hampshire police say there will be more raids like Vista, and that, | :04:01. | :04:04.
armed with the knowledge and experience the team have built up, | :04:05. | :04:08.
they are hoping to become even more effective at making this a hostile | :04:09. | :04:17.
place for drug dealers in future. Our home affairs correspondent is | :04:18. | :04:21.
here now. Recently we have a high profile case of those killers being | :04:22. | :04:26.
sent to jail. What other successes have Hampshire police had? They are | :04:27. | :04:30.
trying to remove the dealers that are further up the supply chain. | :04:31. | :04:34.
They are the ones they say are bringing violence to Hampshire and | :04:35. | :04:38.
posing the greatest threat. If we look at the numbers, 66 people have | :04:39. | :04:43.
been convicted under the operation of drugs offences and other crimes. | :04:44. | :04:50.
?190,000 of drugs has been seized by police and taken off the streets. In | :04:51. | :04:55.
addition, ?150,000 of cash has been taken away from criminals through | :04:56. | :05:00.
the proceeds of crime act. The Lee said that with all this work they | :05:01. | :05:03.
have also seen drug`related violence decrease. It is having an impact. | :05:04. | :05:10.
Why do they need to expand the operation out? Police say | :05:11. | :05:15.
Southampton was the focus but the problem of drug dealers isn't | :05:16. | :05:18.
related to the city. They are going to pull it out across Hampshire. The | :05:19. | :05:22.
problem police have is because we have seen covering all is coming | :05:23. | :05:27.
here from other cities, even when some are convicted, others can come | :05:28. | :05:36.
into take their place. Work is under way today to remove | :05:37. | :05:39.
potentially dangerous asbestos from dozens of beach huts in Poole. | :05:40. | :05:42.
Workers in protective suits have been called in to the seafront | :05:43. | :05:46.
properties. But the council won't be removing asbestos from all of the | :05:47. | :05:49.
town's beach huts at the moment. It says it's safe as long as beach hut | :05:50. | :05:52.
users don't starting interfering with the material. Steve Humphrey | :05:53. | :05:54.
reports. They are not taking any chances with | :05:55. | :05:57.
the asbestos and information work at these beach huts into. They have got | :05:58. | :06:05.
special air loss to stop any fibres getting out. Workers are in | :06:06. | :06:08.
protective clothing as even an on`site decontamination unit. These | :06:09. | :06:15.
beach huts are 40 years old and as a source was used in the floor tiles. | :06:16. | :06:21.
`` as best. The work is being done because the council is trying to | :06:22. | :06:25.
find out how water getting into these popular buildings. It is quite | :06:26. | :06:29.
a job but we have got to make sure that it is done properly, that the | :06:30. | :06:33.
people doing the work are safe and that the public is safe as well. So, | :06:34. | :06:38.
yes, it looks extreme and times. But we have got to do the job properly. | :06:39. | :06:45.
The removal work has been attracting plenty of attention from people | :06:46. | :06:48.
enjoying the sunshine on the seafront. I think they are taking | :06:49. | :06:55.
precautions. It doesn't bother me. The thing that would bother me is | :06:56. | :06:59.
that it has been there for 40 years! They should know what they | :07:00. | :07:07.
are doing by now. When you can see all the gear, what do you think when | :07:08. | :07:13.
you see something like that happening? Anybody would feel | :07:14. | :07:17.
reassured that they are doing it the right way rather than on the cheap. | :07:18. | :07:21.
Altogether, asbestos is being removed from that is its beach huts | :07:22. | :07:28.
ear. The council says there will still be asbestos in other beach | :07:29. | :07:31.
huts but that it is safe as long as it is not disturbed. We have a | :07:32. | :07:37.
number of older buildings on the beach. We tell people to contact us | :07:38. | :07:42.
before they do any work on the building so we can warn them about | :07:43. | :07:47.
precautions. The work you is being done by a special contractor who | :07:48. | :07:52.
says it is following all of the regulations for asbestos removal. | :07:53. | :08:02.
So what has George done for you lately? At the beginning of Budget | :08:03. | :08:06.
week, all eyes are turning to the Chancellor of the Exchequer and | :08:07. | :08:08.
Wednesday's statement from Mr Osborne. But how did last year's | :08:09. | :08:11.
Despatch Box announcements affect the lives of businesses and | :08:12. | :08:14.
communities in the South? Our business correspondent, Alastair | :08:15. | :08:16.
Fee, has been finding out. The slow years are over and orders | :08:17. | :08:19.
are up. This Berkshire factory makes gearboxes for the motorsport | :08:20. | :08:24.
industry. Business in the last 12 months has grown significantly. It | :08:25. | :08:26.
is over a year since I was last here. At the time, doing business | :08:27. | :08:31.
was still far from easy. It is a different picture now. How much of | :08:32. | :08:35.
this improved climate is a direct result of government help? | :08:36. | :08:41.
Confidence is needed in the marketplace. Any measures the | :08:42. | :08:45.
government put in to make people feel better help, but with us it is | :08:46. | :08:51.
nearly 90% export. We are looking at business from Japan and Europe being | :08:52. | :08:57.
what has lifted our story. So not necessarily driven by the | :08:58. | :09:01.
government? Unfortunately not. They have not damaged it but they have | :09:02. | :09:07.
not been the answer, either. In his 2013 Budget, the Chancellor | :09:08. | :09:11.
announced a number of initiatives. There are measures to increase | :09:12. | :09:13.
lending. None of these initiatives are bad. | :09:14. | :09:26.
They haven't made a significant difference, in my view. The economy | :09:27. | :09:31.
goes up and down. The classic thing at the moment is to blame everybody | :09:32. | :09:35.
else for how it went down and take with the credit when it goes up. But | :09:36. | :09:39.
there is a normal cycle here. A lot of what is going on is to do with | :09:40. | :09:44.
the general movement of the economy. We need to be exporting and | :09:45. | :09:48.
manufacturing more. We need something other than a consumer | :09:49. | :09:52.
driven economy. Easier said than done. Here, the last three months | :09:53. | :09:58.
have been the best 2007. They are making more and exports have | :09:59. | :10:03.
increased by 50%. It is an enviable position. For a sustainable | :10:04. | :10:05.
recovery, this week, the government will need to have more companies do | :10:06. | :10:07.
the same. `` to help. The village was badly hit. The | :10:08. | :10:26.
chairman of its flood action group has said he is hopeful the rules | :10:27. | :10:30.
about which place gets new flood defences will change. | :10:31. | :10:40.
Still to come in this evening's South Today: Who has won Pup Idol | :10:41. | :10:44.
and will be treading the boards at the King's Theatre? | :10:45. | :10:54.
Beaches in the South could be stripped of their designation as | :10:55. | :10:57.
safe bathing waters under tough new laws. The Environment Agency has | :10:58. | :11:00.
released a national list of 45 beaches in the firing line, which | :11:01. | :11:03.
includes beach Green in Lancing, Southsea, and Bembridge. There are | :11:04. | :11:06.
fears that threatened closures could cause huge damage to the local | :11:07. | :11:09.
economy. Sean Killick is at Southsea beach. | :11:10. | :11:18.
Southsea beat is popular with tourists. Thousands were here at the | :11:19. | :11:23.
weekend enjoying the sunshine. A question has arisen over the quality | :11:24. | :11:26.
of the bathing water. The Environment Agency has to enforce | :11:27. | :11:31.
new EU regulations which I tried `` twice as stringent as the current | :11:32. | :11:38.
one. On these, Southsea would fail. It has raised concern among local | :11:39. | :11:44.
businesses. On a hot day, everybody wants to go to the beach. They will | :11:45. | :11:49.
walk through, get some sandwiches, drinks, etc, and take them to the | :11:50. | :11:54.
beach. We will be affected by it. Nobody is going to want to go and | :11:55. | :11:59.
swim in horrible sewage water. Why can't they sort it out? The | :12:00. | :12:08.
opposition leader here says she plans to table an emergency question | :12:09. | :12:11.
on this issue tomorrow's full council meeting. This would have a | :12:12. | :12:19.
devastating effect on Portsmouth and the Portsmouth economy. We are a | :12:20. | :12:24.
city that thrives on tourism. We have a robust seafront strategy. If | :12:25. | :12:29.
the Environment Agency are saying that our beach is not safe for | :12:30. | :12:33.
bathing, for public swimming, this would be a disaster for Portsmouth. | :12:34. | :12:38.
I'm joined by the leader of the city council, Gerald Jackson. What are | :12:39. | :12:45.
you doing about this? The water is tested in three places. It has | :12:46. | :12:52.
always been fine in two places but we have had a problem here. We have | :12:53. | :12:58.
now sorted that. For a while we thought there was a problem. We | :12:59. | :13:02.
thought there was a dream coming from the peer that was broken. We're | :13:03. | :13:06.
confident that this year all of the beaches will be passing with flying | :13:07. | :13:14.
colours. The Environment Agency this has been | :13:15. | :13:21.
going on for 20 years. Absolutely, but luckily we have been able to get | :13:22. | :13:26.
in the and get it sorted so there is not our problem now. What would your | :13:27. | :13:32.
message be to bathers who are concerned? There is nothing to be | :13:33. | :13:36.
worried about. All of the beaches here are going to be fine. Two out | :13:37. | :13:42.
of three have official approval. The last one we think this year will go | :13:43. | :13:46.
with flying colours. Come and have a great time. It is wonderful here. | :13:47. | :13:50.
Thank you. It is a bit cold, I have to say. | :13:51. | :13:59.
The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge were with the First Battalion Irish | :14:00. | :14:03.
Guards in Aldershot today to mark St Patrick's day. Prince William is | :14:04. | :14:09.
Colonel of the Regiment. But it was his wife who took centre stage, | :14:10. | :14:12.
presenting traditional sprigs of shamrock on the parade ground. The | :14:13. | :14:15.
Duchess wore a stylish emerald green coat and an Irish Guards brooch, | :14:16. | :14:18.
which is a Royal Family heirloom. Nikki Mitchell was there. | :14:19. | :14:20.
The tradition of presenting shamrocks to the Irish Guards dates | :14:21. | :14:26.
back over a century. In the last few years, the Duchess of Cambridge has | :14:27. | :14:29.
made the bold her own, winning the hearts and minds of the first | :14:30. | :14:33.
Battalion and their families. She was lovely but the girls were | :14:34. | :14:36.
fighting over who would hold the flowers. She was very good. She | :14:37. | :14:46.
said, are they for me? I think she thought she would never get away | :14:47. | :14:51.
otherwise. Shows a genuine interest in people and what they are talking | :14:52. | :15:00.
about. It is not false, but genuine. Following in the Queen Mother's | :15:01. | :15:04.
footsteps, she was wearing the same gold Cartier Shamrock broach the | :15:05. | :15:08.
Queen Mother used to wear on her Patrick 's day visit. The duke and | :15:09. | :15:18.
duchess also met the cadets. Raymond Collister post the inevitable | :15:19. | :15:20.
question of whether or not the duke and duchess were planning to have | :15:21. | :15:25.
another mini cadet of their own. Prince William told him... When time | :15:26. | :15:35.
allows! Year matter we had a little chat about football. `` we had a | :15:36. | :15:43.
little chat about football. The duchess made sure nobody was missed | :15:44. | :15:48.
out today. Even the wolfhound had a sprig of Shamrock had `` pinned to | :15:49. | :15:57.
his tune it. This is his third time eating the duchess. He seems to have | :15:58. | :16:03.
enjoyed it as always. Perhaps hardly tell, though. Nobody has ever heard | :16:04. | :16:10.
him bark! Their Royal Highness is posed for photographs before | :16:11. | :16:13.
finishing their visit in the cookhouse and the officers' mess. | :16:14. | :16:24.
Now, they say that every dog has its day. Well, for one young pup, that | :16:25. | :16:30.
day was today. The King's Theatre, Southsea, has been auditioning local | :16:31. | :16:33.
dogs to take the role of Muzetta's pet in the Italian opera La Boheme, | :16:34. | :16:36.
Southsea's very own Pup Idol. Frankie Peck went down to see the | :16:37. | :16:39.
pooches take on Puccini. The budding actors all held their | :16:40. | :16:41.
nerve as they waited patiently in the wings. Not a sniff Orbach could | :16:42. | :16:45.
be heard as they prepare to show the judges their talents. I thought it | :16:46. | :16:49.
was going to be easy but it is not. The dogs all look so beautiful and | :16:50. | :16:57.
cute. They were so well`behaved. It is going to be difficult to make a | :16:58. | :17:02.
decision. For this part you don't need to be a good singer, you don't | :17:03. | :17:07.
even need to understand Italian. What the producers are looking for | :17:08. | :17:11.
is obedient and also being frightened by bright lights or loud | :17:12. | :17:14.
noises could be a problem. Colin here is one of six dogs who are in | :17:15. | :17:18.
for the running for the Park today. Good boy, Colin! It is not quite | :17:19. | :17:27.
Puccini, but this loud music was played in the theatre lights were | :17:28. | :17:31.
turned up to make sure the dogs were not easily distracted. It is not the | :17:32. | :17:34.
biggest part within the performance, but for these proud | :17:35. | :17:37.
owners there was a chance to show off the tricks their pups could do. | :17:38. | :17:42.
There were number of roles but no sausages. He did really well. He had | :17:43. | :17:49.
a bit of fun. He got on well with the other dogs. Whichever dog gets | :17:50. | :17:52.
it is really deserving. They are so cute. To see how Colin would react | :17:53. | :18:02.
in the lights, everybody just falls in love with him. They all call his | :18:03. | :18:06.
name. They don't know our name but they called his. The winning is... | :18:07. | :18:16.
Tex! Here he is. He is here with his owner. Well done, Tex. You were | :18:17. | :18:25.
wonderful. Why did he win? Because he is well`behaved. We will find out | :18:26. | :18:29.
in the next couple of minutes! What did you have to do? I e`mailed and | :18:30. | :18:35.
put him in for it. I got a phone call to say he had been selected for | :18:36. | :18:41.
the last six. Today we went and there were six of us. I got a phone | :18:42. | :18:50.
call. Is he quirky? He is cheeky. He has got a real character. He is very | :18:51. | :18:54.
good. He has done a lot of training and a lot of shows. He won a | :18:55. | :19:01.
competition catching sausages. That is not difficult, is it, for a dog! | :19:02. | :19:10.
Believe it, a lot of them can't. How old is he? He is three. They must | :19:11. | :19:18.
have been looking for star quality. He was very calm. Everybody tells | :19:19. | :19:21.
me, because I haven't seen anything that was on earlier, he walked | :19:22. | :19:28.
really nicely. He had to be calm. He has to like other people. He is very | :19:29. | :19:33.
friendly. I could take him home. He has got an understudy. Yes. She did | :19:34. | :19:42.
not like him. He is going to be all right going on stage? Loved it. On | :19:43. | :19:52.
the night, what does he do? I have to take him on. You are in it? I am | :19:53. | :20:04.
in it. A singing part? I hope not! So you are going to be part of it. I | :20:05. | :20:10.
will be on the stage so he knows I am close. This is all for fun, isn't | :20:11. | :20:17.
it? Yes, and I think he will soak it up. He is people friendly, as you | :20:18. | :20:23.
can see. Look, I am covered! Look at this. It is great to meet you. | :20:24. | :20:32.
