In tonight's programme: far this year. | :00:09. | :00:16.
a second man is arrested for murder as police still search | :00:17. | :00:19.
Anger over the demolition of beach huts ` as owners are told they'll | :00:20. | :00:25.
Lambert leaves Saints for Liverpool as a ?4 million deal is struck. | :00:26. | :00:47.
And the house full of history ` hidden away in Hampshire ` we step | :00:48. | :00:51.
A second man has been arrested on suspicion of murder. Detectives are | :00:52. | :01:20.
searching for six addresses in the hunt. A statement from her teenage | :01:21. | :01:25.
daughter who last saw her at home was read to the media today. Our | :01:26. | :01:33.
reporter reports. A conscientious nurse who never let anyone down, | :01:34. | :01:39.
some of the words of the 18`year`old daughter. A statement from her was | :01:40. | :01:44.
read by Dorset Police. We have not seen our month since Friday night | :01:45. | :01:49.
when she came home. The last time we saw her, she looked happy and | :01:50. | :01:54.
smiling. She is loving and supporting. My mother has never gone | :01:55. | :01:58.
missing before. This is really out of character and I am really | :01:59. | :02:01.
worried. I really miss and just want a home. Mum, if you are safe and | :02:02. | :02:06.
just want to get away, let us know you are OK. If anyone knows where my | :02:07. | :02:12.
money is, please tell the police. She has not been seen since Friday | :02:13. | :02:18.
evening last week when she left work at the hospital. She returned home | :02:19. | :02:23.
where she briefly saw her daughter. Detectives were today continuing the | :02:24. | :02:27.
search of the property and two other properties nearby. This afternoon, | :02:28. | :02:33.
police revealed an additional relocations were also being | :02:34. | :02:38.
searched. We have no trace of her, no movement, no contact, and it is | :02:39. | :02:47.
because of the last sighting that we are happy that there are grounds to | :02:48. | :02:54.
believe she has come to some harm. 26`year`old man and another man | :02:55. | :03:01.
remaining on suspicion murder. Police were given additional time to | :03:02. | :03:07.
question him. Both are said to be known to the woman. Police are also | :03:08. | :03:11.
searching for this Ford van, potentially seen heading towards | :03:12. | :03:19.
Watford on Saturday morning. That has featured as part of our enquiry | :03:20. | :03:24.
throughout, and we are very interested for anyone to come | :03:25. | :03:28.
forward with any knowledge of that ran. Dorset Police have also | :03:29. | :03:32.
launched a number of appeals to the public and are asking anyone who has | :03:33. | :03:36.
seen something suspicious to get in touch. Anyone who knows anything | :03:37. | :03:42.
about any vehicles connected to the addresses should also get in touch | :03:43. | :03:45.
and if anyone sees any vehicles parked unattended near the six | :03:46. | :03:51.
addresses should get in touch with Dorset Police. | :03:52. | :03:52.
A jury in the trial of a woman accused of causing the death by | :03:53. | :03:56.
careless driving of an 82`year`old lollipop man has been discharged. | :03:57. | :03:59.
23 year old Lauren Paul was driving a Nissan Micra that collided with | :04:00. | :04:02.
Ray Elsemore in Waterlooville, near to Queens Inclosure Primary School. | :04:03. | :04:05.
The crown prosecution service will now consider if it wants to press | :04:06. | :04:08.
Police are hunting a violent robber who's on the run from | :04:09. | :04:16.
Simon Rhodes Butler had been jailed for seven years for a robbery | :04:17. | :04:21.
Officers say a week long search has found no trace of him. | :04:22. | :04:31.
As Joe Campbell reports, this latest in a series | :04:32. | :04:33.
of such cases has led some to question whether sites like Ford are | :04:34. | :04:36.
being used for prisoners who should be in far more secure prisons. | :04:37. | :04:42.
This is the face of the second prisoner that Ford admitted it has | :04:43. | :04:52.
lost track of this week. Days after Simon Rhodes Butler had absconded, | :04:53. | :04:58.
another man was part way through a life sentence for firearm offences. | :04:59. | :05:04.
This probation worker says that despite that, open prisons remain | :05:05. | :05:08.
the best way to help inmates return to society. 84,000 people are | :05:09. | :05:14.
imprisoned, and 3000 of them all life prisoners. All but 49 of them | :05:15. | :05:20.
will be released at some point. You cannot keep them in for a long time | :05:21. | :05:24.
and then kick them out on the streets. It is a gradual process | :05:25. | :05:28.
like when you wean someone off the drugs. That is what open prisons are | :05:29. | :05:35.
good at. Whitehall says cases like that of Michael Wheatley, who was | :05:36. | :05:40.
given a fresh life term yesterday, are extremely rare. High`profile | :05:41. | :05:46.
disappearances are evidence of deeper problems to some. The | :05:47. | :05:54.
government will say that absconding prisoners are at their lowest rate | :05:55. | :05:57.
but clearly there are prisoners with an appalling custodial history who | :05:58. | :06:03.
should not be in open editions. That view chimes with many outside the | :06:04. | :06:08.
prison system. We should keep them in prison. They are walking around | :06:09. | :06:13.
town, it is very wrong. We should not lock them up for ever. Ministers | :06:14. | :06:18.
will have to answer critics who said the closure of sites like Reading | :06:19. | :06:20.
and Dorchester means open prisons will have to take people they were | :06:21. | :06:23.
never designed for. Two men have appeared | :06:24. | :06:27.
in court charged with the murder 35 year old Choudhry Zishan was | :06:28. | :06:30.
attacked outside his family's A post`mortem examination found | :06:31. | :06:34.
he died of head injuries. 22 year old Jonathon McKinley | :06:35. | :06:38.
and his brother Samuel, who's 25 ` both of no fixed address ` | :06:39. | :06:41.
will next appear before A pilot has appeared in court | :06:42. | :06:44.
charged with the manslaughter of a former royal marine who died | :06:45. | :06:48.
in a biplane crash in Dorset. Scott Hoyle was at the controls | :06:49. | :06:51.
of the Tiger Moth when it crashed His passenger, Orlando Rogers, | :06:52. | :06:55.
was airlifted to hospital where he Mr Hoyle, seen here at a previous | :06:56. | :06:59.
hearing, appeared at Winchester Plans have been put forward to | :07:00. | :07:03.
demolish more than 100 Many were battered and severely | :07:04. | :07:12.
bruised by the storms in February. The council says it will pay to | :07:13. | :07:16.
demolish them, but it's the owners that will have | :07:17. | :07:19.
to pay for them to be rebuilt. They want the chance to repair | :07:20. | :07:23.
their own beach huts and are angry that they could lose their, | :07:24. | :07:26.
home away from home, by the sea. The Valentine's Day storms were the | :07:27. | :07:40.
worst that Milford had seen for years. Many of the beach huts were | :07:41. | :07:46.
damaged or destroyed. We heard about the cafe being evacuated and we came | :07:47. | :07:50.
down the next day with our hearts in our mouths, not knowing what we | :07:51. | :07:53.
would find. The devastation was incredible. A survey teams them no | :07:54. | :07:59.
longer fit for purpose and now the council proposes to demolish them | :08:00. | :08:03.
but the owners of the beach huts say they want to do their own repairs. | :08:04. | :08:08.
The problem is that the council do not allow us access to our beach | :08:09. | :08:12.
huts to get in to repair them if they need it. There are other beach | :08:13. | :08:21.
hut owners who are supported by extracts from the survey. Beach hut | :08:22. | :08:29.
68, the door is missing but no other problems. Beach hut 67, doors and | :08:30. | :08:35.
panels are gone but otherwise no problems. The problem the council | :08:36. | :08:43.
has is the asbestos in the roofs and as you can see, the concrete is | :08:44. | :08:47.
corroding and it is affecting the future of all of these hut. They | :08:48. | :08:53.
have deteriorated significantly and we have concerns that the | :08:54. | :08:56.
deterioration is now starting to make the huts unsafe so we have to | :08:57. | :09:00.
balance the views of the owners to make sure that it is accessible and | :09:01. | :09:05.
safe for members of the public who want to use the beach. The Beach Hut | :09:06. | :09:14.
Association is not convinced. They are likely to be repairable and | :09:15. | :09:17.
everyone who has looked at them says they are repairable. The council say | :09:18. | :09:22.
they are concerned about safety. They would say that. Some of their | :09:23. | :09:28.
safety issues are convenient prop to support a case that is weak. The | :09:29. | :09:33.
council will have to find ?150,000 to demolish the huts. The emotional | :09:34. | :09:38.
cost to the owners is immeasurable. A cyclist from Havant sustained | :09:39. | :09:42.
serious head injuries The 23 year old man, | :09:43. | :09:44.
who's not been named, was cycling along Lansdowne Road in | :09:45. | :09:48.
Hove at half past seven yesterday He was airlifted to | :09:49. | :09:52.
Southampton General Hospital. A popular shopping centre in Bordon | :09:53. | :09:55.
is preparing to reopen this weekend after it was devastated | :09:56. | :09:58.
by a fire four years ago. The Country Market houses | :09:59. | :10:01.
a variety of businesses which have been trading in an old hop`picking | :10:02. | :10:04.
barn during the rebuilding work. It's taken almost | :10:05. | :10:07.
a year to re`build and will open to Still to come | :10:08. | :10:10.
in this evening's South Today... We have the latest on Saints' | :10:11. | :10:15.
transfer news. A week from today will be | :10:16. | :10:24.
the 70th anniversary of D`Day Planning | :10:25. | :10:27.
for the invasion was centered The supreme allied | :10:28. | :10:30.
commander, American General Dwight Eisenhower spent | :10:31. | :10:39.
crucial few days there To this day there is a piece | :10:40. | :10:41.
of history directly connected with the invasion still on show ` | :10:42. | :10:45.
the giant map on I went to Southwick | :10:46. | :10:48.
House to find out more. A private House in Hampshire, but | :10:49. | :11:11.
over 70 years, she has given up more of her secrets and the role she | :11:12. | :11:23.
played in the day. `` D`day. This is the map room. It is extraordinary. | :11:24. | :11:28.
The red lines are the coastal route that were used for the invasion | :11:29. | :11:38.
troop who were joining the convoy. You can see the circle that is | :11:39. | :11:42.
called Piccadilly Circus. Because it is so busy? Yes. They would come | :11:43. | :11:47.
down and clear the minesweepers and it extended all the way to Norway. | :11:48. | :11:51.
Give me sense of what this room would have been like. What was the | :11:52. | :11:57.
tension like? What with the atmosphere like and how many people | :11:58. | :12:02.
were there? 30 or 40 people and lots of comings and goings. Noisy? Yes. | :12:03. | :12:10.
And do not forget that in those days, everybody was smoking with | :12:11. | :12:21.
their pipes. There was a fork. `` fog. Could such a plan be done | :12:22. | :12:29.
today? No. Striking a blow for freedom that will live in history. | :12:30. | :12:45.
There are 100 battleships. My father remembers the tanks. All of that | :12:46. | :12:49.
sort of thing. Aircraft, thousands upon thousands of aircraft. And the | :12:50. | :12:55.
fighting spirit. We still have it, of course, but not on this scale. We | :12:56. | :13:02.
could not do it now. We are bringing together air forces, airborne | :13:03. | :13:06.
forces, naval forces, you have a plan overlaying the whole thing, and | :13:07. | :13:12.
the whole question of timing, and how to get across the Channel? What | :13:13. | :13:20.
about the weather? The stormy conditions at the time reflected the | :13:21. | :13:24.
mood at the time amongst weather forecasters who could not agree. | :13:25. | :13:27.
Eisenhower took the advice of one man, Group Captain James Stagg. It | :13:28. | :13:36.
was difficult to see the man with his head on one side, staring, | :13:37. | :13:41.
waiting to hear what the forecast would be. There were going to go the | :13:42. | :13:50.
day before? Yes, they postponed. Eisenhower postponed for 24 hours. | :13:51. | :14:01.
Stack saw a window of 24 hours? Yes. Eisenhower made a decision in this | :14:02. | :14:04.
room which was the likely at this time. Did he take long to make the | :14:05. | :14:11.
decision? Witnesses say it was about five minutes and after five | :14:12. | :14:16.
minutes, it would have seemed like a lifetime. This is the note that | :14:17. | :14:24.
Stagg sent. He thanks the hordes of war. That makes the hairs on the | :14:25. | :14:28.
back of my neck stand up. Much more | :14:29. | :14:36.
on the D Day anniversary coming up next week on South Today, with | :14:37. | :14:39.
fascinating features, and telling We'll also be in France | :14:40. | :14:41.
as the 70th anniversary is marked. And later in tonight's programme, | :14:42. | :14:46.
we'll be live in a Hampshire town as it marks the | :14:47. | :14:48.
anniversary in a very special way. Onto sport now and it's been another | :14:49. | :14:58.
turbulent 24 hours for Southampton In the week where Saints lost their | :14:59. | :15:01.
manager, star striker Rickie Lambert looks set to follow Mauricio | :15:02. | :15:08.
Pochettino out of St Mary's. Tony's here with all the sport ` | :15:09. | :15:12.
Tony is Lambert just There is some inevitability about | :15:13. | :15:24.
all of this. Southampton finished eighth in the league. Their stock is | :15:25. | :15:25.
high, perhaps too high. This move something of a surprise | :15:26. | :15:30.
breaking over the last 24 hours. Tonight he'll be a Southampton | :15:31. | :15:35.
player when he steps out at Wembley Tomorrow he'll be a Liverpool | :15:36. | :15:38.
striker almost two decades after being released by them | :15:39. | :15:41.
as a schoolboy. Saints agreed a fee in the region | :15:42. | :15:44.
of 4 million pounds plus add ons It's the latest step in | :15:45. | :15:47.
a remarkable career for a player who featured for the likes of Stockport, | :15:48. | :15:52.
Rochdale and Bristol Rovers ` Lambert scored on his Saints' debut | :15:53. | :15:55.
against Northampton in 2009 He was promoted with Saints | :15:56. | :16:00.
in consecutive seasons in 2011 So with Lambert gone, the fear for | :16:01. | :16:05.
Southampton fans is "who's next?" In fact the price of relative | :16:06. | :16:09.
success is that virtually the At the back, talks to sell Luke Shaw | :16:10. | :16:12.
to Manchester United continued today, | :16:13. | :16:21.
Saints have turned down an initial bid but United are ready to up the | :16:22. | :16:23.
ante for the England international. Other members of the back four who | :16:24. | :16:32.
are targets` Dejan Lovren could follow Lambert to Liverpool, | :16:33. | :16:36.
In midfield Adam Lallana is poised to jon the Reds as well, although | :16:37. | :16:39.
there's haggling over the fee. Victor Wanyama's spoken of a desire | :16:40. | :16:43.
to play in the Champions League, while Morgan Schneiderlin has been | :16:44. | :16:46.
linked with Liverpool and Arsenal. With Lambert gone up front, | :16:47. | :16:49.
Jay Rodriguez is linked with a move to join Mauricio Pochettino | :16:50. | :16:52.
at Spurs, and fans will take little consolation from the fact that bad | :16:53. | :16:56.
boy Dani Osvaldo is due back The reality is Saints will hope to | :16:57. | :16:59.
hold onto most of this group ` particularly if they can steady | :17:00. | :17:06.
the ship with a new manager ` Here's what the most successful | :17:07. | :17:09.
Southampton boss in history has Eighth in the premiership is good | :17:10. | :17:14.
but they Eighth in the premiership is good | :17:15. | :17:26.
but they should have kept them together and added to it. If Lambert | :17:27. | :17:33.
goes, and people like that, I am a bit worried about it. | :17:34. | :17:36.
Here's what some of you have been telling me on social media today. | :17:37. | :17:52.
Think he will surprise #lfc fans with assists, goals apps" Simon | :17:53. | :17:55.
Thorpe "in a sea of negativity, I am clinging to the oar of hope! | :17:56. | :17:59.
Hoping Ronald Koeman will be announced to steer rudderless ship | :18:00. | :18:03.
through stormy waters" Sarah Brewer echoes Lawrie McMenemy's thoughts | :18:04. | :18:05.
"Can only hope the club have a grand master plan/manager, | :18:06. | :18:08.
years ago but is now representing England in the European | :18:09. | :19:43.
Championships in Italy. Portsmouth has not had a great time in football | :19:44. | :19:51.
but they have really got themselves out of that and this will be a boost | :19:52. | :19:55.
as well, I hope. Something for the city to get hold of and make the | :19:56. | :20:02.
city proud of us, really. 25 teams will be there next week including | :20:03. | :20:09.
last year's winners, Moscow. Portsmouth which includes | :20:10. | :20:15.
confessional players are ready. The Portsmouth team have a lot of lads | :20:16. | :20:21.
who are excellent. We have got a strong team. Not daunted, we are | :20:22. | :20:29.
used to be space. It is just nice that our own club are playing in the | :20:30. | :20:34.
competition. I guess some of the lads that have not played beach | :20:35. | :20:39.
soccer will be nervous but once we get there the atmosphere will be | :20:40. | :20:43.
great. The teams start their quest for glory next Tuesday in Italy, | :20:44. | :20:49.
against the Swiss side. Good luck to them! Nice sunshine. The weather | :20:50. | :20:55.
coming up in a moment but let's return to events taking place to | :20:56. | :20:57.
mark the 70th anniversary of D`day. One town | :20:58. | :21:00.
in Hampshire is commemorating it The whole town of Emsworth is coming | :21:01. | :21:02.
together to put on a series of events to pay tribute and remember | :21:03. | :21:07.
the events of seventy years ago in what's been described as the biggest | :21:08. | :21:11.
creative event ever staged there. Yes, it is such an evocative sound | :21:12. | :21:25.
of the 1940s, and as a town, they are going to town to commemorate | :21:26. | :21:30.
D`day. There are many events planned, from readings to play to | :21:31. | :21:35.
concerts. They are even projecting wartime images onto the side of | :21:36. | :21:39.
Lloyds Bank at night, and that is made possible by a grant from the | :21:40. | :21:46.
National Lottery. In the lead up to D`day, this was a major hub of | :21:47. | :21:50.
activity. The Canadians were billeted here just up the road. We | :21:51. | :22:01.
had the Americans as well. Just ahead of that invasion, there were | :22:02. | :22:07.
lots of men. Pupils at the Park Community School have been | :22:08. | :22:11.
interviewing men about their time is here. They have produced a DVD which | :22:12. | :22:16.
is available in local shops. There was lots of activity and the road | :22:17. | :22:25.
was very narrow in those days and lay`by is what put in and they were | :22:26. | :22:32.
full of military vehicles. My father took me to the top of the hill and | :22:33. | :22:37.
when we looked up the Solent, it was packed tight with shipping of all | :22:38. | :22:41.
shapes and sizes. In fact, there were so much shipping you could not | :22:42. | :22:48.
see the water. A specially commissioned play is being put on | :22:49. | :22:53.
here, following three local families in the lead up to D`day. The first | :22:54. | :22:57.
performance is tonight. They are just rehearsing at the moment. With | :22:58. | :23:02.
me is the artistic director, Mark Ringwood. What would people see | :23:03. | :23:08.
tonight? It will be one hour and a quarter of play, depicting the | :23:09. | :23:13.
stories of families going up to D`day. Most people do not know what | :23:14. | :23:18.
went on. 30,000 people lived in this borough but now there are 130,000. | :23:19. | :23:23.
It was a huge change to the town, wasn't it? 20,000 troops camped in | :23:24. | :23:31.
the words, camouflaged. Landing craft were made down by the harbour | :23:32. | :23:37.
and on Hayling Island is as well. A fantastic story to be told people | :23:38. | :23:44.
are gradually discovering this. The play takes place on Friday, Saturday | :23:45. | :23:48.
and Sunday this week, and next week as well. From a very musical | :23:49. | :23:56.
Emsworth, where everybody is looking forward to the play. They are here | :23:57. | :24:00.
very early! They want the best seat in the House, Tom! Thank you. There | :24:01. | :24:06.
will be a lot of events in a lot of places. Now for the weather. What | :24:07. | :24:10.
will be like this weekend? Sarah is here. Not too bad. Not wall`to`wall | :24:11. | :24:18.
sunshine but, you know, yeah, not too bad. Grey skies for many of us | :24:19. | :24:21.
today. Here is Christ key today. A very busy Christchurch Quay today | :24:22. | :24:35.
Thanks to Jane Pearce for that one A great shot of a highland cow | :24:36. | :24:38.
on The Moors near Bishop's Waltham. Sue Pratt took that one And a sporty | :24:39. | :24:42.
weather picture to finish on ` `` for most of us, one or two | :24:43. | :24:51.
showers, slow moving across parts of Dorset. It looks like they are just | :24:52. | :24:55.
about to fade away so we will see drier conditions. Elsewhere, staying | :24:56. | :25:01.
dry with cloudy conditions for most of the region. Eastern parts will | :25:02. | :25:05.
see a few breaks developing here. That's when we see temperatures | :25:06. | :25:11.
responding at nine or ten in the breaks of cloud. 11 or 12 where | :25:12. | :25:15.
there is cloud. We start tomorrow with a cloudy affair but there will | :25:16. | :25:21.
be some breaks to be had. One or two light showers to be had but I | :25:22. | :25:25.
suspect most of us will miss out on the wet weather and we are looking | :25:26. | :25:29.
at temperatures in the sunshine of a pleasant 17 or 18 degrees. Not too | :25:30. | :25:34.
bad for this time of year. To tomorrow night and it is quiet. | :25:35. | :25:41.
Generally, staying dry but there could be a few showers passing | :25:42. | :25:44.
through. Temperatures staying in double figures so staying mild. As | :25:45. | :25:49.
we take a look ahead to Sunday, this is the front we are keeping an eye | :25:50. | :25:56.
on. Not looking too bad on Sunday so it looks like another day on Sunday | :25:57. | :26:01.
of grey skies, but with some bright interludes. Yes, still the risk of a | :26:02. | :26:12.
handful of showers. It could arrive overnight. Temperatures up to about | :26:13. | :26:24.
18 or 19 degrees. Nothing too impressive in the summary but the | :26:25. | :26:28.
weekend will be largely dry, quite a bit of cloud and sunny intervals at | :26:29. | :26:31.
times. Turning and settled overnight as we head into Monday. Thank you, | :26:32. | :26:40.
Sarah. Some music to finish up with? Yes! Have a good weekend. More from | :26:41. | :26:46.
us later. We will leave you with the music from the The Band at Emsworth | :26:47. | :26:52.
as they mark the 70th anniversary of D`day. | :26:53. | :26:56. |
