you. That is all from me. Now on BBC One we | :00:00. | :00:00.
Hello I'm Sally Taylor. Welcome to South Today. In tonight's programme: | :00:00. | :00:07.
Sex workers subjected to horrific acts of violence ` charities in the | :00:08. | :00:10.
Thames Valley say the problem is getting worse. | :00:11. | :00:14.
"Your kindness could kill" ` Bournemouth launches a campaign to | :00:15. | :00:23.
They were not born alcoholics or beggars or drug users. There was a | :00:24. | :00:40.
cause behind why they are doing what they are doing. | :00:41. | :00:43.
Almost a hundred million pounds in the bank ` but who'll be left on the | :00:44. | :00:46.
pitch? We hear from Saints on the summer exodus. | :00:47. | :00:52.
Join me to see the Royal `` thrill seekers in a show grounded in | :00:53. | :00:56.
tradition. They are subjected to horrific | :00:57. | :01:03.
acts of violence, but attacks are A charity working with sex workers | :01:04. | :01:07.
in the Thames Valley has told BBC South Today that the number | :01:08. | :01:12.
of incidents is increasing. Across the country over a thousand | :01:13. | :01:16.
attacks have been reported to But only 25% have been | :01:17. | :01:20.
passed onto police. More than 70% of street sex | :01:21. | :01:26.
workers say they've been sexually Now a Thames Valley charity is to | :01:27. | :01:29.
increase it's support for victims of sexual violence, | :01:30. | :01:36.
exploitation and human trafficking. It's recruiting specialist 'trauma | :01:37. | :01:40.
advisors' in Reading and Oxford ` Nikki Mitchell has this | :01:41. | :01:43.
exclusive report from Reading. When sex workers hit | :01:44. | :01:50.
the streets after dark, They're walking around just checking | :01:51. | :01:53.
in with people that we know. They give out packs | :01:54. | :02:00.
which have condoms, rape alarms, And sometimes we have things from | :02:01. | :02:04.
Berkshire women's aid, like lipsalve This prostitute is telling the Rahab | :02:05. | :02:15.
support staff about some housing You try and find out | :02:16. | :02:17.
for definite when the appointment is While they often help with housing, | :02:18. | :02:25.
health or hardship problems, But if anything does go wrong, | :02:26. | :02:29.
you've always got Rahab to call. It's definitely been | :02:30. | :02:53.
the case that it's increased Sometimes we have Joe punter, | :02:54. | :03:00.
if they don't think they're getting And other times, it's organised | :03:01. | :03:04.
crime and organised violence by gangs of people who go with the | :03:05. | :03:10.
specific aim of hurting somebody. People have been punched, kicked, | :03:11. | :03:14.
threatened at knifepoint, gunpoint, raped, kidnapped and held | :03:15. | :03:18.
against their will. We work with them | :03:19. | :03:21.
in the hope that they contact police Many girls do not call | :03:22. | :03:25.
the police or report because they They just shrug it off and carry | :03:26. | :03:35.
on with it. We couldn't find an increase | :03:36. | :03:42.
in the level of violence but that We understand the pressures | :03:43. | :03:48.
and issues on the street and the fact we may not receive full | :03:49. | :03:56.
reports on every occasion. We only encourage sex workers | :03:57. | :03:59.
themselves and their advocates The new independent trauma advisers | :04:00. | :04:01.
in Reading and Oxford help victims from the point | :04:02. | :04:09.
of crisis right through the process It is hoped they will be able to | :04:10. | :04:12.
highlight the plight of those working in the sex trade behind | :04:13. | :04:18.
closed doors where exploitation It's designed to shift beggars | :04:19. | :04:20.
and rough sleepers from the streets of one | :04:21. | :04:30.
of the south's top seaside towns. Local politicians | :04:31. | :04:34.
in Bournemouth are putting up hard hitting posters saying that giving | :04:35. | :04:36.
handouts is killing with kindness. Instead they want people to | :04:37. | :04:41.
donate cash to a charity that Steve Humphrey has been | :04:42. | :04:43.
listening to the arguments. We're from BBC South East asking | :04:44. | :04:53.
people about this campaign. In Bournemouth I met Dean who | :04:54. | :04:55.
describes himself as a busker. He has strong views on | :04:56. | :04:58.
Bournemouth Council new campaign aimed at getting beggars | :04:59. | :05:00.
and rough sleepers off the streets. Where is the evidence | :05:01. | :05:05.
people are being killed? Another homeless man has been given | :05:06. | :05:10.
a lot of support by the town's rough sleepers team but he doesn't like | :05:11. | :05:15.
the tone of the new campaign either. The reason they don't go after help | :05:16. | :05:20.
is because they find it difficult in The big idea behind the posters is | :05:21. | :05:28.
to get people to donate money to a charity that helps rough sleepers | :05:29. | :05:34.
and not to give cash hand`outs to That way all of the money is | :05:35. | :05:38.
supporting them to get them off the street rather than perpetuating | :05:39. | :05:44.
the problem by giving money there and then which isn't changing their | :05:45. | :05:47.
life and keeps them on the street. Across the town, | :05:48. | :05:53.
the council initiative is generating a lot of discussion ` | :05:54. | :05:54.
amongst residents and visitors. You have to be cruel | :05:55. | :05:59.
to be kind sometimes. Condemning people for handing money | :06:00. | :06:04.
out of people isn't the idea. Are you allowed to hand | :06:05. | :06:08.
them food and things? Bournemouth Council says there's | :06:09. | :06:15.
been a 5`10% increase in the number of beggars and rough | :06:16. | :06:17.
sleepers in the last year. It describes its new campaign | :06:18. | :06:21.
as robust. It is a tough message | :06:22. | :06:25.
but we want to help those people to assist them and to make | :06:26. | :06:28.
their lifestyle better than it is. Amongst those questioning | :06:29. | :06:33.
the approach is Claire Matthews who runs a soup kitchen three nights | :06:34. | :06:35.
a week in Bournemouth. She says she helps up | :06:36. | :06:39.
to 100 people a week. There is a cause behind why they | :06:40. | :06:43.
are doing what they are doing. If you get to the root of the cause | :06:44. | :06:47.
then crack the circle and help them. The new campaign is | :06:48. | :06:54.
proving controversial. It has opened up a fresh debate over | :06:55. | :06:56.
an issue that has been going The homeless charities Crisis | :06:57. | :06:59.
and Shelter declined to comment on this story ` | :07:00. | :07:09.
but you've been giving us your views Gatwick Airport's baggage handling | :07:10. | :07:12.
company Swissport has apologised, after hundreds | :07:13. | :07:39.
of passengers had to wait hours The problems began | :07:40. | :07:42.
on Saturday night following a spate of arrival delays ` after one | :07:43. | :07:47.
of the busiest days of the year. Some travellers were told to leave | :07:48. | :07:50.
without their luggage Swissport blamed what it called | :07:51. | :07:53.
off`schedule aircraft activity. Millions of pounds worth | :07:54. | :08:02.
of savings need to be made at Wiltshire Fire Service to stop | :08:03. | :08:04.
it becoming insolvent. A proposed merger with Dorset was | :08:05. | :08:07.
discussed earlier where the concerns The idea is currently out | :08:08. | :08:10.
to public consultation. How to keep the fire pumps | :08:11. | :08:15.
flowing with the money drying up? It's a problem Wiltshire Fire | :08:16. | :08:21.
and Rescue are tackling In two years time we cease to have | :08:22. | :08:24.
any reserves to cover the current deficits | :08:25. | :08:30.
and we will be going into the red and that is not a viable position | :08:31. | :08:32.
for any public service let alone one Wiltshire has made ?2 million | :08:33. | :08:36.
of cuts since 2010 but a more radical solution was discussed, | :08:37. | :08:43.
a merger with Dorset Fire Service. Supporters say savings could be | :08:44. | :08:49.
merged to protect crews You can do it by having a merger, | :08:50. | :08:52.
by getting rid of a group of senior staff who are | :08:53. | :09:00.
on over ?100,000 a year. You don't need so many senior staff | :09:01. | :09:05.
but you keep the firefighters The union says government funding | :09:06. | :09:08.
cuts are the real issue, The possible impact | :09:09. | :09:15.
on response times is a concern I believe in localism, | :09:16. | :09:20.
services like fire and ambulance and local government should be based | :09:21. | :09:26.
on the County of Wiltshire. The public are being asked for their | :09:27. | :09:30.
views on the planned merger, a final The flash flooding | :09:31. | :09:38.
and lightning storms that swept through much of Sussex yesterday saw | :09:39. | :09:46.
cars stranded and a number West Sussex Fire and Rescue Service | :09:47. | :09:49.
were called out to help a man to safety after his car got | :09:50. | :09:55.
caught in the ground water. Still to come in this evening's | :09:56. | :10:03.
South Today....feeling the heat Alexis Green is at the | :10:04. | :10:05.
New Forest Show. Temperatures soared to the high 20s | :10:06. | :10:18.
but will it be as warm tomorrow? Find out later in the programme. | :10:19. | :10:24.
The need for housing versus the pressure on land for development | :10:25. | :10:27.
` the latest to face the dilemma is a community near Winchester. | :10:28. | :10:30.
Residents of Pitt Valley say they're shocked and angry | :10:31. | :10:32.
about proposals to build 500 homes, metres from their small community. | :10:33. | :10:34.
Opponents say the plans are surplus to requirements ` the developer | :10:35. | :10:37.
This field in Pitt has few neighbours. | :10:38. | :10:49.
But the developer Linden Homes wants to build 500 houses here. | :10:50. | :10:53.
It's drawn strong opposition before a planning application has | :10:54. | :10:56.
It will overwhelm the infrastructure we have here. We can hear the road | :10:57. | :11:09.
behind us, it is a busy road and access will be difficult with new | :11:10. | :11:13.
homes. We will be the backyard to 500 new | :11:14. | :11:15.
houses. Winchester District | :11:16. | :11:26.
plans 12,500 new homes by 2031. 4,000 would be in | :11:27. | :11:28.
Winchester City Council's area. But in a statement the | :11:29. | :11:30.
council told the BBC... A separate development of 200 homes | :11:31. | :11:41.
is already being built next door. The parish council believes 500 | :11:42. | :11:48.
more would be a step too far It is outside of Winchester and | :11:49. | :11:58.
outside the city boundaries and it is in contravention of the local | :11:59. | :12:10.
plan. There should be no truck with a proposal. My constituents have no | :12:11. | :12:12.
truck with it and the MP is curious. Linden homes sent | :12:13. | :12:16.
us a statement saying... The developer will undergo a second | :12:17. | :12:29.
consultation later this year. Livestock competitions, | :12:30. | :12:36.
show jumping and hundreds of trade stands all help make | :12:37. | :12:39.
the New Forest and Hampshire County show one of the country's leading | :12:40. | :12:42.
agricultural events. The show got underway this morning, | :12:43. | :12:46.
attracting thousands of visitors, and providing a boost to | :12:47. | :12:49.
the local economy. Our reporter Briony Leyland has | :12:50. | :12:57.
spent the day there. A real hands | :12:58. | :13:04.
on event this year Briony? Yes, hands`on. People don't just | :13:05. | :13:14.
come to see the spectacle, they come and try new activities whether | :13:15. | :13:19.
milking a cow or going on a tug`of`war against a tractor or | :13:20. | :13:23.
stepping inside the tent over here. The BBC tent where you can have a go | :13:24. | :13:28.
at a go at news reporting. More of that in a moment. The show is a mix | :13:29. | :13:33.
of the old, a formula which works well. | :13:34. | :13:47.
Relaxing before that entrance, educating the crowds about what | :13:48. | :13:57.
price milkers do best. We started the show because we realised there | :13:58. | :14:00.
was plenty of children in the country who didn't have an idea | :14:01. | :14:04.
where milk came from. They assumed it came from the supermarket. They | :14:05. | :14:11.
have such big feet! Plenty of opportunities for placing counters | :14:12. | :14:16.
here from handling chicks to braving the cameras in the BBC tent. The | :14:17. | :14:21.
fully operational TV studio giving visitors a realistic taste of life | :14:22. | :14:28.
in front of the camera. It will be raining cats and dogs. I gave it a | :14:29. | :14:34.
go and I have something to tell the girls at the I did! Less adrenaline | :14:35. | :14:45.
inducing events in the bead tent. The show is keen to maintain its | :14:46. | :14:49.
traditional appeal as it reaches out to new ideas and audiences. The | :14:50. | :14:54.
first show was in 1920, a small show, the three`day show, so much to | :14:55. | :15:02.
do. You can range from scarecrow competition is to judging a paltry | :15:03. | :15:06.
tent. It is well put on this year, we walked right around. We will go | :15:07. | :15:13.
around again more slowly. It is something we all enjoy. To come once | :15:14. | :15:18.
or twice is fantastic. Everybody goes off with a smile on their face. | :15:19. | :15:26.
Despite being purely a weekday events, the crowds keep coming. | :15:27. | :15:32.
100,000 people are expected over the next three days of the new Forest | :15:33. | :15:41.
shows. A bit of showing off here. There is a new scenario with a | :15:42. | :15:44.
crashed car and a horse in trouble. The public get a chance to try their | :15:45. | :15:49.
hand at live reporting. The technical side is over here with | :15:50. | :15:56.
students from Southampton Solent. We have been running since nine | :15:57. | :16:03.
o'clock. Hundreds of people. Alexis, a familiar face going through your | :16:04. | :16:08.
paces. Yes, it has been hot today, feeling like the Sahara perhaps. A | :16:09. | :16:12.
sizzling forecast to look forward to. For now, that is all from the | :16:13. | :16:19.
new Forest show. You are clearly enjoying the day. It looks | :16:20. | :16:25.
fantastic. Make sure you visit. Have a go at presenting news and weather | :16:26. | :16:31.
and sport. Let's move on. Great news, gold for the shooting. | :16:32. | :16:36.
It's been a golden day for Dan Rivers from Didcot who walked | :16:37. | :16:39.
away with the top prize in the men's 50 metre rifle. | :16:40. | :16:41.
Having qualified in first place, he always looked | :16:42. | :16:43.
like a sound medal shout and he delivered, shooting a new games | :16:44. | :16:46.
It's the second medal Rivers has won in Glasgow, having clinched Bronze | :16:47. | :16:53.
Earlier in the week getting bronze in the air rifle, that was, I didn't | :16:54. | :17:11.
realise. I was not ready for that. Now I have had the feeling before, | :17:12. | :17:17.
into the final, I fired more steadily. I was, and absolutely | :17:18. | :17:24.
smashed it again. Get in! I love his enthusiasm. Kelly is on | :17:25. | :17:33.
course to win a medal. The 19`year`old student helped England | :17:34. | :17:36.
to the top of the standing. I am dizzy just looking at that. They | :17:37. | :17:41.
continued on the beam and the floor. Final results in the next few | :17:42. | :17:47.
moments. Her team mates are watching her and we hope to bring you their | :17:48. | :17:53.
reaction later. A quick roundup from the Commonwealth Games. | :17:54. | :18:04.
It was good news for Olympic long`jump champion | :18:05. | :18:06.
The Milton`Keynes based athlete overcame recent knee troubles to | :18:07. | :18:10.
He beat the qalification mark with his first jump of 8.05 metres. | :18:11. | :18:18.
But it was heartbreak for the South's trio of men's hockey | :18:19. | :18:21.
players who lost to New Zealand in the dying minutes, going down 2`1. | :18:22. | :18:25.
Simon Mantell, Dan Fox and Nick Catlin will be among those now | :18:26. | :18:28.
hoping to secure a semi`final spot on Thursday when they face Canada. | :18:29. | :18:34.
No such trouble for the women's netball team though | :18:35. | :18:36.
that includes three players frmo the south ` they swept aside Trinidad | :18:37. | :18:39.
Tobago 70`24 to all but confirm their place in the semi finals. | :18:40. | :18:51.
The women have won another gold at the Commonwealth Games. More | :18:52. | :18:54.
reaction later. In football now, | :18:55. | :18:55.
and the Chairman of Southampton has insisted today that the club is not | :18:56. | :18:57.
for sale and midfielder Morgan Schneiderlin and striker Jay | :18:58. | :19:00.
Rodriguez will still be at the club Both had been heavily linked with | :19:01. | :19:03.
moves away from Saints to Tottenham, but today Ralph Krueger has looked | :19:04. | :19:08.
to reassure fans. It'll be music to the ears | :19:09. | :19:10.
of those who have seen a number of star players leave in what's been | :19:11. | :19:13.
a busy summer so far. Just 79 days ago, Saints secured | :19:14. | :19:17.
a record points tally and their Since then the manager's changed, | :19:18. | :19:20.
and 5 first team regulars have left It all left fans wondering where | :19:21. | :19:26.
the exodus was going to end? Well today ` Chairman Ralph Krueger | :19:27. | :19:32.
sent out a message. We have identified we want to build | :19:33. | :19:46.
around. The players will be in the core group. Stories passed around | :19:47. | :19:51.
around are quite simply false. | :19:52. | :19:54.
Speaking at the start of the month manager Ronald Koeman | :19:55. | :19:56.
revealed he knew that Adam Lallana, Rickie Lambert and Luke Shaw would | :19:57. | :19:59.
We said, OK, we are not a selling club. We like to keep the rest of | :20:00. | :20:10.
the good players and we like to bring in new players. | :20:11. | :20:12.
Since then, Dejan Lovren and Callum Chambers have also moved on. | :20:13. | :20:15.
It all leaves the first eleven looking very | :20:16. | :20:16.
We are shocked at how quickly the players are moving out. We accepted | :20:17. | :20:28.
certain players would go but before we lost any more we wanted to see | :20:29. | :20:29.
the players coming in. Krueger insist Saints are not | :20:30. | :20:32.
for sale and very close to bringing I have a mandate to work together | :20:33. | :20:42.
with the executive to reinvest and build the best possible team and | :20:43. | :20:46.
that the club is not for sale. The start of | :20:47. | :20:48.
the new season is now 19 days away. But as Saints have already proven, | :20:49. | :20:51.
a lot can change In cricket, England strengthened | :20:52. | :20:53.
their grip on the third test against Sussex Bowler Chris Jordan wasn't | :20:54. | :20:57.
amongst the wicket takers, but India were reduced | :20:58. | :21:03.
in response to England's first Whether it?s been at the New Forest | :21:04. | :21:08.
show, or out on the pitch at the Ageas Bowl, it?s been another | :21:09. | :21:30.
hot day in the south . So what about cooling | :21:31. | :21:34.
down with a cold beer? The Hogs Back brewery in Surrey | :21:35. | :21:39.
already produces some speciality beers, like this one ` | :21:40. | :21:42.
their award`winning TEA beer, Now they're hoping to revive an | :21:43. | :21:45.
ancient variety of Hop that hasn't Charlotte Stacey went | :21:46. | :21:50.
to find out more. Hop gardens like this used to be | :21:51. | :22:02.
a familiar site in Surrey. Farnham White Vine, a local hop, | :22:03. | :22:07.
used to be one of the most valuable in the UK, before mould | :22:08. | :22:11.
and cheaper imports wiped it out in the early 20th century, but now a | :22:12. | :22:13.
local brewery is bringing it back. It originated from this area in a | :22:14. | :22:25.
17th century, it was grown a mile and a half down the road. We thought | :22:26. | :22:27.
