a UN school and a crowded marketplace in Gaza. That is all | :00:00. | :00:11.
tonight's programme: The hidden crime, domestic violence in gay | :00:12. | :00:14.
relationships. Why won't thd victims come forward? That was when the | :00:15. | :00:19.
punching started, getting dragged around the house and locked in the | :00:20. | :00:24.
bedroom. Not allowed to go out and see my family. It was difficult A | :00:25. | :00:32.
devious conman, a judge's comments as she sentences a Portsmouth | :00:33. | :00:36.
builder to nine years in jahl. Katz, guns and cruelty. The worryhng rise | :00:37. | :00:44.
of airgun attacks. Two hurt something for fun, or as a | :00:45. | :00:51.
deterrent, is inconceivable to us. And tributes to the fallen from the | :00:52. | :00:53.
Army town which never forgot. It's a crime many people ard unaware | :00:54. | :01:04.
of because so many victims still But figures gathered, from ` major | :01:05. | :01:08.
gay rights campaign group, claim there's widespread domestic abuse | :01:09. | :01:14.
within same`sex relationships. More than one in three, | :01:15. | :01:18.
gay and bisexual men have experienced at least one incident of | :01:19. | :01:29.
domestic abuse in a relationship. They go on to say that 17% | :01:30. | :01:32.
of lesbians and bisexual wolen have But more than 80% said they had | :01:33. | :01:35.
never reported to the policd. Now specialist officers in Hampshire | :01:36. | :01:40.
have joined forces with domdstic violence charities, to encotrage | :01:41. | :01:42.
more victims to seek support. Sean is 31 years old now, btt he | :01:43. | :01:47.
says when he was younger he was in a Getting dragged around the house | :01:48. | :01:54.
and locked in the bedroom and not allowed to even go out, | :01:55. | :02:03.
see my family, see my friends. Eventually it was neighbours who | :02:04. | :02:06.
alerted Hampshire Police, btt it took a further three months before | :02:07. | :02:11.
Sean was given the support to leave. It was hard, because it was like | :02:12. | :02:15.
everyday I was waking up to exactly So you think the police shotld have | :02:16. | :02:19.
been more involved earlier on? Do think they would be | :02:20. | :02:24.
more helpful today? I hear a lot more things now | :02:25. | :02:28.
down the doctors about what you can So there is a lot more support | :02:29. | :02:34.
now for people in the situation Yes, | :02:35. | :02:40.
definitely. Constabulary control room, the main | :02:41. | :02:48.
place that deals with any c`lls from But it does seem far less lhkely | :02:49. | :02:52.
statistically that anyone in a same`sex relationship would | :02:53. | :02:55.
make that call. What we found is that a lot | :02:56. | :02:57.
of people are very nervous about actually speaking out | :02:58. | :03:02.
about what's happened. Because | :03:03. | :03:04.
in some situations they might not have come out to their families | :03:05. | :03:06.
to their friends, to the mahn It might be that they are concerned | :03:07. | :03:09.
about how the public might view their | :03:10. | :03:14.
relationship and the abuse happening there, where there's things going | :03:15. | :03:17.
wrong in a relationship. To counter that, Hampshire | :03:18. | :03:20.
Constabulary has trained 120 specialist lesbian and gay liaison | :03:21. | :03:24.
staff, its largest ever number. This is actually | :03:25. | :03:29.
about supporting the people that haven't come forward that m`y come | :03:30. | :03:31.
forward and say actually, we're there and we can offer you | :03:32. | :03:34.
that safeguarding, that support So hopefully make your life | :03:35. | :03:37.
better and turn it around. And then build on that trust | :03:38. | :03:44.
and confidence that, perhaps historically, | :03:45. | :03:46.
may not have been believed to have As for Sean, he now has a ndw home, | :03:47. | :03:48.
a new puppy and a new life. He has this advice for anyone who's | :03:49. | :03:55.
going through what he suffered. The first hit, run, | :03:56. | :03:58.
get out of there. Don't wait a year, two years, | :03:59. | :04:01.
three years because you'll dnd up like I did, very controlled | :04:02. | :04:04.
and very timid and depressed. The feeling like you can't go | :04:05. | :04:10.
on any more, Earlier this afternoon, | :04:11. | :04:13.
I spoke to Richard Lane, from the the gay and lesbian | :04:14. | :04:18.
campaign group Stonewall, and I asked him if he was surprisdd by the | :04:19. | :04:21.
high prevalence of domestic violence They're in line with the research | :04:22. | :04:24.
that we've done that shows that domestic violence is a real issue in | :04:25. | :04:28.
same`sex relationships, and also in line with the research that we've | :04:29. | :04:31.
done that unfortunately, as with all kinds of domestic report, | :04:32. | :04:34.
we still expect this to be So we're really calling | :04:35. | :04:36.
on there to be more action to target some of the messages | :04:37. | :04:40.
around preventing and tacklhng One of the high figures is that | :04:41. | :04:42.
gay and lesbian people are not We see most of the messages around | :04:43. | :04:49.
domestic violence and domestic abuse are targeted at the horrific problem | :04:50. | :04:58.
of women in relationships whth men. So for a lot of same`sex cotples, | :04:59. | :05:05.
they certainly don't see wh`t they are experiencing reflected | :05:06. | :05:09.
in those messages, so often they might not often realise thex are | :05:10. | :05:11.
being a victim of domestic `buse or So we need to tailor those lessages | :05:12. | :05:15.
to show people that regardldss of what relationship you ard | :05:16. | :05:19.
in you can be a victim of domestic abuse and then therefore th`t there | :05:20. | :05:22.
is support available for yot. Is part of it that for some people | :05:23. | :05:25.
it's still very difficult to come out, if you like, and there is still | :05:26. | :05:28.
this stigma attached, and they perhaps don't want to go to | :05:29. | :05:31.
the police for that very re`son I also think it's important to | :05:32. | :05:37.
recognise that domestic abuse can It's not always from a partner, | :05:38. | :05:40.
it can be from other members So for a lot of young peopld growing | :05:41. | :05:46.
up and coming out to their family, they can also be victims of domestic | :05:47. | :05:51.
abuse and domestic violence, and that can be anything from elotional | :05:52. | :05:54.
blackmail in terms of threatening to out someone to their family, | :05:55. | :05:57.
to their work, to their fridnds So it's really important that | :05:58. | :06:00.
service providers are traindd to Orchard close, Abbeyfield, hs | :06:01. | :06:04.
a lesbian and gay liaison officer. Orchard close, Abbeyfield, hs | :06:05. | :07:55.
nestled away in the heart of Hampshire. It offers sheltered | :07:56. | :07:58.
accommodation for older people. But, after today's announcement, this | :07:59. | :08:02.
might not be the case. Two residents, both in their 90s, might | :08:03. | :08:07.
not be able to afford their fees without the Hampshire countx council | :08:08. | :08:12.
funding. It would be devast`ting. The elderly don't always like | :08:13. | :08:16.
change. They have friends hdre, they like their routines here, so it | :08:17. | :08:23.
could potentially be devast`ting. The supporting people budget was at | :08:24. | :08:26.
one time protected by centr`l government. Now, Hatcher cotnty | :08:27. | :08:30.
council are no longer legally obliged to offer these types of | :08:31. | :08:36.
services `` Hampshire countx council. This means an end to a | :08:37. | :08:41.
number of services for young people. Five contracts for accommod`tion | :08:42. | :08:44.
will be axed in March, saving the council around ?140,000 per year. | :08:45. | :08:49.
The changes mostly affect housing and support for both young `nd old. | :08:50. | :08:53.
We've got to make our services sustainable for the future. We have | :08:54. | :08:57.
an ageing population, our older people have far more complex needs | :08:58. | :09:01.
and we have to look after them. So yes, we have to make these cuts | :09:02. | :09:05.
unfortunately. The people that benefited from the programmd are | :09:06. | :09:09.
described as having moderatd needs by the council, but there are fears | :09:10. | :09:12.
that taking away this support could cost more in the long run. Hf | :09:13. | :09:17.
somebody is reliant on a colmunity arm and they fall over and hurt | :09:18. | :09:21.
themselves and for the want of that arm they are on the floor for six | :09:22. | :09:27.
hours, that is likely to be not just a burden on the NHS, a biggdr burden | :09:28. | :09:32.
on Hampshire county council, and a lot of human misery that cotld be | :09:33. | :09:37.
avoided. And others think there are better alternatives. Our position | :09:38. | :09:39.
all along has been that nond of these cuts that the council is | :09:40. | :09:45.
proposing are necessary. Thdre are ?490 million in reserves. They | :09:46. | :09:49.
should be used to protect the most honourable. For the Council, saving | :09:50. | :09:54.
?7 million is not loose change, and there is still a long way to go to | :09:55. | :09:58.
meet a saving target of ?100 million by the end of the year. | :09:59. | :10:08.
Still to come, Tony has been enjoying a day of Crest test | :10:09. | :10:15.
cricket. England looked set to level the series against India. 1`1 in a | :10:16. | :10:20.
day when they have really t`ken control. I will have the latest here | :10:21. | :10:22.
later in the programme. The fianc?es of two cyclists killed | :10:23. | :10:30.
by a drink driver, in Berkshire are calling for tougher jail terms | :10:31. | :10:33.
for motorists who kill. Alexander Walters was driving | :10:34. | :10:35.
a stolen car, while disqualhfied, when he hit the two Reading men | :10:36. | :10:38.
in February. He was jailed for ten years | :10:39. | :10:41.
for both deaths. A petition is now calling | :10:42. | :10:43.
for separate sentences to bd handed out for each person killed | :10:44. | :10:49.
by a guilty driver. John Moreland and Chris Jarvis, | :10:50. | :11:00.
fathers, cyclists and friends. The police knocked on the door `nd they | :11:01. | :11:05.
said, it is John, there has been an accident. My initial thought in my | :11:06. | :11:12.
head was, he is in hospital. They said no, he is dead. They s`id Chris | :11:13. | :11:21.
also. I just completely collapsed. In February, John and Chris were | :11:22. | :11:27.
cycling on this road when they were hit by a stolen BMW. The drhver | :11:28. | :11:31.
Alexander Walters, was over the drink drive limit, had cocahne in | :11:32. | :11:35.
his system and was disqualified In April he was jailed for ten years at | :11:36. | :11:40.
Reading Crown Court. If he wasn t in the car he would have done ht with | :11:41. | :11:44.
his own hands. That would h`ve been life and 20 last years. Bec`use he | :11:45. | :11:50.
was in a car, he only got tdn years. I thought, is that it? I thought, | :11:51. | :12:00.
not for two people's lives. They have now started a petition calling | :12:01. | :12:04.
for a change to the law. Currently, causing death by dangerous driving | :12:05. | :12:08.
has a maximum sentence of 14 years. Even if two people have been | :12:09. | :12:13.
killed. They want separate sentences for each victim. We want more change | :12:14. | :12:17.
so that Chris is classed as one and John is cast as one. He would have | :12:18. | :12:22.
got ten plus ten. We all kndw it would be half of that, and we | :12:23. | :12:27.
thought, was that all they were worth? The petition needs 100,0 0 | :12:28. | :12:32.
signatures to trigger a deb`te in Parliament. A government review of | :12:33. | :12:36.
the penalties is also due in a cabin coming months. There should be much | :12:37. | :12:39.
more discussion given to judges in this case there certainly should | :12:40. | :12:44.
have been more than ten years. This is why the review will be rdally | :12:45. | :12:48.
useful. I want people signing this petition to also input into the | :12:49. | :12:58.
review what's it goes lives. `` once it goes live. They want the justice | :12:59. | :12:59.
they feel has been denied. A "professional, | :13:00. | :13:03.
plausible and devious conman". The words of Judge Sarah Munro as | :13:04. | :13:05.
she sentenced builder Paul Gaffney from Cosham, to nine years hn | :13:06. | :13:08.
prison, for scamming people out of The case followed a year long | :13:09. | :13:12.
investigation by Portsmouth City He deliberately targeted thd most | :13:13. | :13:30.
vulnerable people. Gaining their confidence before ripping them off. | :13:31. | :13:34.
Paul Gaffney conned victim `fter gift and victim, for building job | :13:35. | :13:41.
that whenever needed. 85`ye`r`old Peter lost nearly ?35,000. Gaffney, | :13:42. | :13:48.
even driving him to his bank to withdraw cash for work that was | :13:49. | :13:53.
never done. I know these rogues are around, but I didn't realisd, | :13:54. | :13:59.
initially, that he was a rogue. He was so convincing. I feel r`ther | :14:00. | :14:05.
ashamed having to admit that it happened to me, but at least I hope | :14:06. | :14:11.
it is a warning to other people Prosecutors in court told how he | :14:12. | :14:14.
used his charm to gain the trust of his victims before he then preyed | :14:15. | :14:18.
upon them, inducing them to part with large sums of money. Some | :14:19. | :14:23.
people lost their life savings. All of this prompted the judge here to | :14:24. | :14:30.
describe him as "a professional plausible and devious conman". Many | :14:31. | :14:34.
of the victims were in their 80s and 90s. He laid upon them, befriended | :14:35. | :14:39.
them and essentially coerce them into having work that often was | :14:40. | :14:45.
never completed. Any work that was done was often a very poor standard. | :14:46. | :14:55.
Her honour described Gaffnex's crimes of of the utmost serhousness. | :14:56. | :15:00.
He had brought building trade into disrepute and left his victhms | :15:01. | :15:04.
physically, psychologically and financially scarred. She sentenced | :15:05. | :15:05.
him to nine years in jail. Police are investigating a series | :15:06. | :15:12.
of airgun attacks on a cat, Ellie Robson`Frisby's cat Phckle was | :15:13. | :15:14.
shot on three separate occasions She's now enlisted the help | :15:15. | :15:21.
of social media to try This is Pickle, over the last five | :15:22. | :15:36.
months he had been attacked twice by an air rifle near his home hn North | :15:37. | :15:40.
Hampshire. This weekend he was shot again. His owner, Ellie, rushed into | :15:41. | :15:46.
the vet. Bullet had gone in from his abdomen straight down and presumably | :15:47. | :15:52.
caused quite a lot of damagd. They couldn't do anything, so we had to | :15:53. | :15:57.
make the unfortunate decision to put him to sleep. It was probably the | :15:58. | :16:04.
worst decision we have ever had to make. These x`rays show the extent | :16:05. | :16:08.
of his injuries. The bullet went more than ten centimetres into his | :16:09. | :16:12.
body. Heartbroken, she turndd to Facebook. On Monday she posted | :16:13. | :16:18.
pictures of Pickle with ple`s for information and support. Shd was | :16:19. | :16:21.
overwhelmed by the response. Many neighbours contacted her to say that | :16:22. | :16:25.
their pets had been shot in recent months or so. The case is not a one | :16:26. | :16:34.
off. The ISP see a `` BRS PCA say they have had many calls about this | :16:35. | :16:39.
so far this year, but many go unreported. They want better control | :16:40. | :16:43.
and regulation where airguns are sold. It is a serious crime, anyone | :16:44. | :16:49.
using an air weapon to hurt an animal could face a ?20,000 fine and | :16:50. | :16:56.
up to six months in prison. Pickle's cousin Mali has avoided | :16:57. | :17:04.
attacks so far. It's hoped that someone will come forward and avoid | :17:05. | :17:06.
animals from losing their lhves Hundreds of people fell sildnt this | :17:07. | :17:10.
morning to commemorate the sacrifice made by ten thousand Wiltshhre | :17:11. | :17:13.
soldiers during the First World War. Each was represented | :17:14. | :17:16.
by a named cross, placed on a wall of remembr`nce | :17:17. | :17:18.
at Tidworth Military Cemetery. The Last Post | :17:19. | :17:20.
and the silence it commands. As people gathered today at | :17:21. | :17:43.
Tidworth Military Cemetery to remember the 10,000 Wilshird men who | :17:44. | :17:47.
signed up 100 years ago, and gave their lives in the great | :17:48. | :17:56.
War. Men like | :17:57. | :17:58.
Private Henry Erwin Merchant, just Henry and the others now have their | :17:59. | :17:59.
own cross and poppy in a melorial wall here, with a personal lessage | :18:00. | :18:06.
from the children who made them Maybe | :18:07. | :18:11.
because he gave up his life for us. Amber's dad, like so many hdre, | :18:12. | :18:24.
is a military man based in the military county, out in force | :18:25. | :18:31.
today to pay tribute to everyone. I just think it's important that we | :18:32. | :18:37.
still remember these men And remember | :18:38. | :18:39.
the men still fighting todax? My husband has been away | :18:40. | :18:46.
in a couple of wars, he has been to Afghanistan, he has been to Iraq, | :18:47. | :18:50.
and probably more to come. A prospect Wilshire is prep`red for, | :18:51. | :18:55.
with an extra 4000 military Although today belonged not to the | :18:56. | :18:59.
county's future, but to its past. Just to let you know we havd a very | :19:00. | :19:18.
special programme on Monday night commemorating the 100 annivdrsary of | :19:19. | :19:23.
Britain entering the war. Wd will be at the Tank Museum Dorset whth | :19:24. | :19:29.
special events planned. We will also have some of the personal stories of | :19:30. | :19:33.
those who fought in the gre`t War. Make sure you are with us for that, | :19:34. | :19:35.
Saturday and Monday night. Onto sport and take your pick | :19:36. | :19:38.
of the big events on offer in the region over the next week or | :19:39. | :19:41.
so, Glorious Goodwood, Cowes Week and Test cricket are all | :19:42. | :19:43.
on the south's doorstep. Tony's going to be at all three | :19:44. | :19:46.
of those locations over the next week or so, starting tonight with | :19:47. | :19:49.
the Ageas Bowl and the test A glorious day for some good | :19:50. | :20:06.
cricket. Tremendous. Lovely location, temperatures in the mid to | :20:07. | :20:10.
high 20s. A really nice and good crowd. They just left after a day in | :20:11. | :20:16.
which England were very much on top. The bigger picture for this game, | :20:17. | :20:22.
it's all part of the location trying to get its spot on the map. There | :20:23. | :20:28.
are six counties competing, so probably only two tests. It will be | :20:29. | :20:33.
very difficult. They have to impress this week. They haven't been helped | :20:34. | :20:38.
by the scheduling, test match started on Sunday. The crowds tail | :20:39. | :20:41.
off a little bit. Let's tell you about what has been going on on the | :20:42. | :20:46.
pitch. England have been on charge. A big match for Alastair Cook. For | :20:47. | :20:56.
those who did come along, Alastair Cook set England to win. 112 before | :20:57. | :21:06.
the close, Chris Jordan with five overs, 0`22. It is ?1 for under 16 | :21:07. | :21:18.
is tomorrow. To football news. Back at Southampton today, he showed his | :21:19. | :21:25.
eureka at the proposal to sdll him. The Frenchman and striker would not | :21:26. | :21:29.
