I'm Anjana Gadgil with the news here in the South.

A group of horse riders has staged a protest at a small

village on the South Downs against a proposal to

They're worried about the ilpact of large lorries and tankers

on the country roads near the site at Forestside, in West Sussdx.

They're also concerned the drilling may affect water aquifers.

The prospect of up to 40 he`vy goods vehicles a day,

servicing an oil well, is not popular.

A lot of horses use this ro`d, so we are worried about meeting

heavy traffic on these roads and our horses bolting.

And also our children ride their horses and bikes on these roads

so there will be an element of risk them too.

The protest ride travelled down a route that would be used

Even passing a regular car causes people concern,

and often they slow down and pull over.

These lorries are going to take over three-quarters of the road,

An oil well was first drilldd in Markwell Woods six years ago

Now, UK Oil and Gas, has put in a planning application

to start drilling again with four new horizontal wells

from the site, right beside an important water apuifer.

Our concerns are that they will actually affect the flow

of the water snf the turbidhty of the water as they drill through.

But even greater is the concern of the kind of chemicals thdy're

going to be putting down through the aquifer.

Portsmouth Water has asked for more information about how water

UK Oil and Gas says there whll be no risk of contamination as its wells

will be thoroughly cased with steel tubing and concrete.

It plans to discuss concerns with residents next month.

Sir Nicholas Winton, who lived in Berkshire,

are to be sold at auction in Oxfordshire.

Sir Nicholas, who died last year aged 106, brought Jewish chhldren

from Nazi-occupied Czechoslovakia to the UK.

The items include his 105th birthday message from the Queen

and an engraving from one of the children he rescued.

Thousands of people have taken part

The 10-mile race through thd streets of Portsmouth is one

of the country's biggest mass participation sporting events.

This year's run raised an estimated ?4 million for charities.

It started 27 years ago with a few thousand participants, but now

comprises of four events ovdr two days, involving 25,000 runndrs.

So far this month most of the rain has been near Eastern coasts. That's

changing quite dramatically. All of this cloud coming in from the south

and this rain band moving across the channel into southern parts of

England right now. The rain is easing off in the south-east of

England. The main focus will be for the south-west of England where

there could be heavy bursts of rain in Devon and Cornwall. With the

shield of cloud pushing into Wales, the Midlands and the southern half

of the UK, but it isn't as cold night. Different story further

north, breaks in the cloud allowing for a touch of frost and pockets of

mist and fog. Northern areas will see spells of sunshine in the

morning. Some showers, but not as many as recently. The Midlands and

the south, more cloud, and shall read bursts of rain. This will clip

south-west parts of Wales. There could be torrential downpours in the
