Good evening. A man has been arrested following the death of a

baby girl in Devon. The 10-month- old was taken to hospital on boxing

day, but died yesterday. Ali Chitty reports.

The baby was admitted here to the Royal Devon and Exeter Hospital on

Boxing Day evening. Due to her condition she was later transferred

to Bristol where she died yesterday. The girl has not yet been formally

identified, but her next of kin were with her at time of death.

Police have begun an investigation and a 28 Gerard man has been

arrested. He has been bailed until February. -- A 28 year-old man.

A 44-year-old woman has been charged with murder following the

death of a man on Portland. Martin Rusland, who was 43, was found dead

at his home in Park Road on Wednesday morning. Carol

It seems it's been a much better Christmas than expected for some

shops in Plymouth. They'd been preparing for the worst, but sales

have stayed reasonably buoyant as Jane Chandler reports. Retailers

were anticipating fewer shoppers because of the downturn in the

economy, but there has been a brighter picture than many expected.

Independent traders have done particularly well. Retailing has

been very challenging and we were all worried about takings for

Christmas. Having a quick round up today of the independent traders,

the outcome has been positive. At the other end of the city, it is

the same story. The run-up to Christmas was fantastic, we broke

records for the most fought for we have had on the 22nd. It has really

boy it -- it has been really buoyant. Shoppers are still

watching the pennies murder. Definitely. I think it will be the

same next year. A we have done a lot more budgeting and waiting for

things that we want. That is how we save money. We did most of our

shopping before the sale but we had a lot of vouchers. I have been able

to buy a coat at half-price. So a better season than expected.

Retailers just hope customers will keep shopping in the new year.

The roof of a medieval Cornish church could soon be generating

power and earning money for its community. Campaigners want to put

22 solar panels on the roof of the Church at St Newlyn East. The

church is Grade Two Star listed - but the plans have won the support

of English Heritage and now just need approval from Cornwall Council.

British bobsleigher, Serita Shone, from Dorset is determined to return

to the sport after fracturing her spine on a training run. Just eight

weeks after the accident, Serita is back in Weymouth. There were fears

she may never walk again, such was the damage to her spinal cord, but

that's been straightened by metal plates and bolts. There were a few

points where I did not think I would make the next day. I thought

I was dying. It was bad and I remember saying out loud, am I

dying? I think most people think a am mad and saying and should not

get back in one of those, but I am. A sell-out 10,500 crowd will be at

Sandy Park tomorrow when Exeter Chiefs play the Premiership leaders

Harlequins. Full-back Luke Arscott scored his first try of the season

for the Chiefs in Tuesday's defeat at London Irish. He's relishing the

challenge against Quins, who suffered their first league defeat

at Christmas to Saracens. I think there are a lot of teams up there.

I would not say there is any one team that is better than the others.

There are six teams that can all challenge each other and it will be

really interesting come the end of the season.

All our Football League teams have early starts on New Years Eve,

kicking off at one o'clock. Exeter City and Yeovil Town continue their

quest to escape League One's relegation area at Colchester and

at home to Bournemouth respectively. In League Two, Torquay United and

In League Two, Torquay United and Plymouth Argyle look to follow up

wins on Boxing Day. Oxford come to Plainmoor, while the Pilgrims go to

Aldershot. Aldershot.

Now we're continuing our look back at some of the stories from 2011

and today we recall some of the year's sporting highlights. They

included spectacular events such as the America's Cup and a fight for

survival for our biggest football club.

2011 was probably the toughest history in Plymouth Argyle history.

The club entered administration and suffered relegation. Staff and

players went months without full pay. Peter Reed was sacked in

September with Carl Fletcher taking his place on the touchline.

Meanwhile Argyll's future was secured in October. Their aim now

is to avoid relegation from the Football League. Torquay's

promotion play-off at Old Trafford ended in tears when they were

beaten 1-0. A there was Premiership glamour at

the start of the season when Liverpool visited Exeter. Ending

the home side's hopes in the competition. Cornish pirates

battled hard to make it to the play-offs where they were

eventually beaten. Plymouth Albion it parted ways with their chairman.

Former Exeter chief man is the new head coach. It was close, but no

but none as Somerset missed out on a trophy for the second year. Tom

Daley began the year picking up gold in the synchronised diver. In

May, Tom's father lost his battle with cancer. He had been a proud

supporter of Tom and no more so than when his son became champion.

Exeter's Lee and Hancock read -- defended his title in Shanghai and

Olympics. Helen Glover had plenty to smile

about this year. She and her rowing partner won gold at two events and

silver in Slovenia. Cornwall cyclist won her third world team

title in years. The Tour of Britain cycle race rode into the region and

the Americas Cup races provided all of the action for spectators.

Another busy year. And now the Another busy year. And now the

weather. Some rather cloudy and damp

conditions heading our way both overnight and they allowed much of

tomorrow. It is all thanks to this weather system. We are between

weather fronts but it was this warm front that board rain and cloud.

The rain eventually clears, but it does remain at misty and murky with

health bargain places and very mild for this time of year. Temperatures

will hold into double figures for many of us. Tomorrow we keep hold

of cloud with further patchy rain and drizzle. Still some who will
