We will keep you updated on the Typhoon as it heads towards Vietnam | :00:00. | 3:59:59
this weekend. Good evening. And based Royal Marine | :00:00. | :00:21.
faces a life sentence. Tonight, we'll hear from one ex`commando | :00:22. | :00:24.
about the battlefield as senior officers condemn the actions of the | :00:25. | :00:30.
guilty man. It is a matter of regret that, in | :00:31. | :00:35.
this isolated incident, this Marine failed to apply his training and his | :00:36. | :00:39.
responsibilities. Also tonight: Fares please ` how | :00:40. | :00:42.
some free bus pass holders in Cornwall, could be asked to pay for | :00:43. | :00:46.
their travel to save routes. And the rare birds facing a winter | :00:47. | :00:49.
without food, after their habitat was destroyed. | :00:50. | :00:54.
A Royal Marine from Plymouth`based 42 Commando has been found guilty of | :00:55. | :00:58.
murdering an Afghan insurgent. The marine, who cannot be named, faces a | :00:59. | :01:02.
mandatory life sentence for the execution of the man in Helmand | :01:03. | :01:06.
Province two years ago. Two former colleagues, known as Marines B and | :01:07. | :01:09.
C, were found not guilty. John Danks reports. | :01:10. | :01:21.
Marine B had filmed the murder on his camera, and it was this footage | :01:22. | :01:28.
that was shown to the court. We cannot show the footage, but we can | :01:29. | :01:36.
show the audio. The Marines are heard discussing | :01:37. | :01:45.
what to do with the injured man. Later, Marine a Mac `` Marine a is | :01:46. | :01:56.
heard to shoot the man. Today, the action was judged as murder. | :01:57. | :02:03.
In a war situation, when adrenaline is pumping through the body, people | :02:04. | :02:10.
do perhaps make errors in judgement. One former commando has told the BBC | :02:11. | :02:19.
about the pressures. With the powerful adrenaline going | :02:20. | :02:25.
through the body and with a firefight, when it peaks, you are | :02:26. | :02:36.
buzzed up. The Ministry of Defence says that, | :02:37. | :02:39.
whatever the circumstances, the man is guilty. | :02:40. | :02:46.
It is a matter of regret that in this circumstance one Marine did not | :02:47. | :02:53.
do his duty. What we have heard is not consistent with the values and | :02:54. | :02:59.
standards of the Royal Marines. Of all these services, I think the | :03:00. | :03:04.
Royal Marines Warfield this most acutely, because they say that their | :03:05. | :03:11.
people are very educated. `` will feel this. They will try not to do | :03:12. | :03:25.
this and be accused of these things. The man was from 42 Commando. A MP | :03:26. | :03:34.
says that people will feel this throughout the community. | :03:35. | :03:41.
I think that people will be sad, because the Marines are part of our | :03:42. | :03:45.
community. To find that these Marines were accused and found | :03:46. | :03:51.
guilty of this act will concern people. | :03:52. | :03:59.
The Marine A will be sentenced. Marines B and C were found not | :04:00. | :04:06.
guilty and will return it to the services. | :04:07. | :04:08.
This is the first time that the British Forces have been put on | :04:09. | :04:11.
trial for murder during the 12 year campaign in Afghanistan. Our | :04:12. | :04:14.
correspondent Andy Moore has been following the case in court. | :04:15. | :04:17.
Earlier, I asked him what happened in court when the verdicts came in. | :04:18. | :04:23.
A very short hearing, but it was emotional. A military panel was | :04:24. | :04:29.
there. The three men were asked to stand behind the screens. The | :04:30. | :04:37.
families linked arms. The panel declared Marine A guilty and the two | :04:38. | :04:43.
other men not guilty. There was no reaction from behind the screens. | :04:44. | :04:49.
The families cried. The judge said that this sentence had a mandatory | :04:50. | :04:54.
life sentence, but the court will be adjourned. He said that Marines B | :04:55. | :05:01.
and C were free to go back to their bases. The court was cleared so that | :05:02. | :05:07.
Marine A could spend time with his family before being taken away. | :05:08. | :05:12.
What will happen in regards to custody? | :05:13. | :05:22.
Marines B and C go back to their lives as Royal Marines. For Marine | :05:23. | :05:27.
A, there will be reports done. The judge said that he wanted a report. | :05:28. | :05:35.
They will go back for sentencing on December six. There will be a | :05:36. | :05:39.
mandatory life sentence, but with a minimum term set. Also, there will | :05:40. | :05:46.
be talks about the anonymity of that men. The judge said that he wanted | :05:47. | :05:58.
the anonymity to be there whilst the trial was on, but he might lift it | :05:59. | :06:02.
afterwards. There will be discussion over whether the men can be named. | :06:03. | :06:11.
There will be more analysis of that case on the BBC News website. | :06:12. | :06:21.
People with free bas passes could be asked to pay their bus fares, if | :06:22. | :06:25.
they can afford to. It's just one proposal being put to Cornwall | :06:26. | :06:28.
Council in an attempt to help protect rural bus routes. The | :06:29. | :06:31.
council says it will have to make some cuts to subsidised bus services | :06:32. | :06:35.
next year. Bus passes are not means tested, you get one when you reach | :06:36. | :06:38.
60. One councillor says some pensioners can afford to pay for | :06:39. | :06:41.
their travel. Eleanor Parkinson reports. | :06:42. | :06:46.
Villagers here say that there daily bus service is a lifeline for people | :06:47. | :06:52.
who do not drive and want to go to local towns. But this village has | :06:53. | :06:56.
just had its bus service cuts. It has lost its evening and Sunday bus | :06:57. | :07:05.
services. This lady has not drive `` has not driven since her car | :07:06. | :07:09.
accident. She says that it will be difficult for her to get home. | :07:10. | :07:16.
I will be getting back at 9pm, how? I will not be able to do it. | :07:17. | :07:22.
I use the bus service a lot, and on Sunday I go to a Quaker meeting, and | :07:23. | :07:29.
I cannot get there. What has happened is that members of the | :07:30. | :07:33.
meeting have kindly said that they will drive me. | :07:34. | :07:40.
Many bus routes are subsidised by the council. One councillor has | :07:41. | :07:45.
suggested that pensioners could be at to pay for their journeys if they | :07:46. | :07:48.
can. I know that there are lots of people | :07:49. | :07:53.
who use free bus passes who cannot afford to pay, and we do not want to | :07:54. | :07:58.
penalised them. But we can say to people that, if they can afford to, | :07:59. | :08:06.
maybe they can keep the bus pass in their pocket and pay for the adult | :08:07. | :08:10.
fare. I think that would be sensible, as | :08:11. | :08:16.
long as people on low incomes would go for free. | :08:17. | :08:19.
Everyone I have spoken to would be happy to pay for the trip. They | :08:20. | :08:23.
would be happy to do that if they get to keep the bus. | :08:24. | :08:28.
I think many people would be able to pay a small amount for the journey. | :08:29. | :08:34.
The council is obliged to provide free bus travel to people over the | :08:35. | :08:40.
age of 60, so free bus pass travellers can only be asked to pay | :08:41. | :08:50.
for their fair on a voluntary basis. Plans to cut bus services across | :08:51. | :08:53.
Dorset are being revised following public opposition. The ?850,000 | :08:54. | :08:55.
reduction to services was deferred by the County Council in July for a | :08:56. | :08:59.
public consultation. A report on that includes concerns over access | :09:00. | :09:01.
to medical services, the isolation of some communities and the economic | :09:02. | :09:05.
impact. A final decision on the cuts is expected next month. | :09:06. | :09:13.
The region's Police and Crime Commissioners have raised concerns | :09:14. | :09:15.
with the government over policing cuts. PCC Martyn Underhill is | :09:16. | :09:18.
warning that Dorset's council tax precept could rise by up 3% next | :09:19. | :09:22.
year. He says it's due to the cost of expanding the Independent Police | :09:23. | :09:35.
Complaints Commission. The RSPB says it's shocked by the | :09:36. | :09:38.
removal of an important habitat which is used by one of the | :09:39. | :09:41.
country's rarest birds. Cirl buntings have been coaxed back to | :09:42. | :09:44.
the South West in recent years, but the ones at Exminster in Devon have | :09:45. | :09:48.
now lost their food supply for the winter, after crops were cut back | :09:49. | :09:51.
and the land ploughed over. Our Environment Correspondent Adrian | :09:52. | :09:53.
Campbell reports. There were still some cirl bunting | :09:54. | :09:59.
left today on this field, but what has happened here as `` has | :10:00. | :10:05.
devastated those involved in bringing back the birds to the | :10:06. | :10:09.
south`west. We have put in a lot of work onto | :10:10. | :10:14.
this site. To see its like this is terrible. | :10:15. | :10:19.
This woman has worked hard on this land on behalf of the RSPB, but the | :10:20. | :10:25.
land is owned by the NHS Trust. We have ten pairs of cirl buntings, | :10:26. | :10:33.
and two of them have been nesting on this site, but other pairs, and | :10:34. | :10:39.
winter here. This is where they get their winter food. Without it, they | :10:40. | :10:43.
haven't got any food. Nobody has been available for | :10:44. | :10:51.
interview from the Devon NHS Trust. They say that they are sad about | :10:52. | :10:54.
what happened and they are looking for a way forward and what to do | :10:55. | :10:57.
next. It takes 20 years for the hedgerows | :10:58. | :11:03.
to have the right nature for cirl buntings. | :11:04. | :11:11.
One of the local people is Diane. She is with a group who get involved | :11:12. | :11:19.
with the nature of the area. There is no overall total effect of | :11:20. | :11:26.
all the action is taking place. This may be only one site, but the number | :11:27. | :11:37.
of cirl buntings sites are affected. Everyone has agreed that this is an | :11:38. | :11:41.
unfortunate incident that will be difficult to put right. | :11:42. | :11:50.
Coming up next: A very special challenge for Children in Need. | :11:51. | :11:53.
Plus: The young racing driver going places. | :11:54. | :11:55.
Could he be a Formula 1 champion of the future? | :11:56. | :11:58.
And poems from the front line ` the letters giving an insight into life | :11:59. | :12:06.
during the Second World War. Well, a week today is the big day ` | :12:07. | :12:10.
Children in Need 2013. Each year, you raise thousands of pounds to | :12:11. | :12:13.
help disadvantaged children and young people in the UK. The charity | :12:14. | :12:17.
is funding 73 projects in the South West and has granted more than ?3 | :12:18. | :12:20.
million in the region. One of those projects is | :12:21. | :12:23.
Penhaligon's Friends in Cornwall, which helps people with bereavement, | :12:24. | :12:25.
including 17`year`old Peter Birkett. He's taking part in the One Show's | :12:26. | :12:28.
Rickshaw Challenge in memory of his mother and sister. He and his dad | :12:29. | :12:32.
Geoff are now preparing for their 700 mile journey across the UK to | :12:33. | :12:35.
raise money for BBC Children in Need. | :12:36. | :12:42.
When we first found out about it, that was quite exciting that friends | :12:43. | :12:52.
thought of us. To do something as amazing as this challenge is | :12:53. | :12:58.
exciting. We have been training, going to work, going to the gym. It | :12:59. | :13:05.
has been like that for the past few months, trying to do as much | :13:06. | :13:10.
training as we can, to do the challenge. | :13:11. | :13:12.
It will definitely be a challenge, but that is what it is meant to be. | :13:13. | :13:17.
We want to raise as much money as possible to support as many | :13:18. | :13:22.
charities as possible. The charity has been valuable. I don't know | :13:23. | :13:32.
where we would be today without it. Six years ago, my son was in a car | :13:33. | :13:41.
accident in which his sister died. Quickly after the accident, there | :13:42. | :13:48.
was a lot of problems. Very angry, upset is, regretful, feeling a lot | :13:49. | :13:55.
of the most because he survived and his mother and sister did not. I was | :13:56. | :14:03.
grieving as well. It was a difficult time for us. | :14:04. | :14:12.
I could not deal with it. The charity was there when I needed | :14:13. | :14:16.
help. As a parent, watching your child go | :14:17. | :14:20.
through something like that, you feel hopeless. There is nothing you | :14:21. | :14:26.
can do or say. You just can't make it better. | :14:27. | :14:30.
None of my friends had been through anything similar, so they could not | :14:31. | :14:39.
understand. I would be on my own. I went to youth groups and understood | :14:40. | :14:43.
that other people know what it is like to go through this. I | :14:44. | :14:49.
understood that I am not on my own. I would like to do this challenge | :14:50. | :14:54.
every year for the rest of my life. The charity is so valuable. Life | :14:55. | :15:00.
would have been so much harder for both of us if they were not around. | :15:01. | :15:11.
So, Children in Need really does make a difference, and this year the | :15:12. | :15:15.
South West's Party for Pudsey is at the National Maritime Museum | :15:16. | :15:18.
Cornwall next Friday night. So if you've been fundraising and would | :15:19. | :15:21.
like to come along just go to [email protected] and we'll | :15:22. | :15:32.
send you some tickets. Onto the sport now, and Dave's been | :15:33. | :15:35.
to meet a highly`rated welterweight boxer from Devon, who's preparing | :15:36. | :15:38.
for his first professional fight later this month. | :15:39. | :15:41.
This is a boxing gym in Torquay, where Freddie Hewitt is doing some | :15:42. | :15:50.
shadow`boxing. He is preparing for his first professional boxing match | :15:51. | :15:55.
after his amateur career. And there will be the quest to win | :15:56. | :16:01.
the Anglia cup tomorrow. There is more reason for the Chiefs to do | :16:02. | :16:06.
well this year, because their home stadium has been chosen to have the | :16:07. | :16:10.
final in March. And three teams hope to win `` to | :16:11. | :16:17.
get to the final of the FA Cup. One team will play Peterborough, | :16:18. | :16:26.
Plymouth Argyle have a new striker in time for their match against | :16:27. | :16:32.
City. And Paul McCallum is eligible to play against Rochdale. | :16:33. | :16:43.
This story is about the breeding ground for Formula 1 drivers, and | :16:44. | :16:46.
the next one could be from this area. Would he overtake him `` | :16:47. | :16:54.
players like Lewis Hamilton one`day? | :16:55. | :17:01.
And maybe a schoolboy, but Alex is making a big name for himself in | :17:02. | :17:08.
motorsport. He is only 12, but he is going to the next stage. He is | :17:09. | :17:14.
ranked number two in the country, and has already joined a racing | :17:15. | :17:20.
team. However, his performances this season have also attracted attention | :17:21. | :17:28.
from beef or RE `` from the top of the karting groups. | :17:29. | :17:38.
Top races from Formula 1 have been Carters in the past. | :17:39. | :17:48.
He has become a prolific winner. There is the championships and the | :17:49. | :17:51.
British open Championships and the Grand Prix, which is to events, and | :17:52. | :17:58.
I was lucky to win both of them. And the first winner of the Grand Prix | :17:59. | :18:03.
championship? Lewis Hamilton. You only have to | :18:04. | :18:08.
look at Alex's room to see that there is more than luck involved. In | :18:09. | :18:14.
fact, she has achieved all this against the odds. Despite receiving | :18:15. | :18:18.
some sponsorship, other opponents have a full`time teams. Luckily for | :18:19. | :18:26.
Alex, his dad is a mechanic. It is an expensive sport and we need | :18:27. | :18:31.
more help. We are reliant on the bank of mum and dad. It is every | :18:32. | :18:39.
boy's dream to get to Formula 1, and the karting is a stepping stone. | :18:40. | :18:45.
Winter testing with his new team and his new cart begins tomorrow, just | :18:46. | :18:54.
after his final cadet phrase. He has already been over to Italy for a | :18:55. | :18:59.
test drive, and there are talks that he might go back in the future. | :19:00. | :19:06.
I want to go into Formula 1, but everyone wants that. But I think | :19:07. | :19:11.
anything with four wheels and an engine would be good for me. | :19:12. | :19:18.
Freddie, are you ready for your professional career after only four | :19:19. | :19:22.
years as an amateur? I can't wait to get in the ring. I | :19:23. | :19:31.
just want to do it now I am here. Have you done enough in your amateur | :19:32. | :19:38.
career? 11 wins. I started boxing late, when I was | :19:39. | :19:48.
18. I did mostly knockouts as well. I think my boxing style suits the | :19:49. | :19:57.
professional style. I am ready. What do you think your strengths | :19:58. | :20:00.
are? I think it is these. People always | :20:01. | :20:09.
find it hard to get speed. I am a faster. My goal is to keep | :20:10. | :20:17.
improving. I will see how I have done in two years. | :20:18. | :20:23.
If you cannot beat them, then joined them. | :20:24. | :20:38.
Great work, loved every minute! Now, as the nation prepares to mark | :20:39. | :20:44.
remembrance weekend, new light has been shed on the life and work of a | :20:45. | :20:54.
Second World War poets. John Jarmain saw action at the Battle of El | :20:55. | :20:57.
Alamein, and was killed in 1944. His letters from the front line to his | :20:58. | :21:01.
wife in Dorset contained much of his poetry. Now, those letters have been | :21:02. | :21:04.
donated to the University of Exeter. Simon Clemison has the story. | :21:05. | :21:07.
We have seen sand frothing like the sea in our wheels, wrapped in the | :21:08. | :21:15.
dust from Sun and sky without a mark to guide them by. | :21:16. | :21:23.
The words were written by her father. She always knew that he was | :21:24. | :21:28.
a published war poets, but she did not know that her mother had kept | :21:29. | :21:34.
let after letter, revealing his character as well as his poems. | :21:35. | :21:39.
It gave me an insight into my Father, which I had not thought of | :21:40. | :21:43.
before, as I had never known him. He became a person. | :21:44. | :21:52.
He was killed in 1944 when Janet was very young. He was a significant | :21:53. | :21:58.
Second World War poet, and there are not many poets from that era. Why | :21:59. | :22:03.
are the First World War poets more non`quiz`macro it could be that the | :22:04. | :22:11.
First World War poets had already written about much of the | :22:12. | :22:14.
experience. But the Second World War poets could | :22:15. | :22:21.
write about the sand and the desert. The environment was even more | :22:22. | :22:24.
hostile for a lover of green landscapes. | :22:25. | :22:30.
James is a poets who has written extensively about Dorset. He tells | :22:31. | :22:37.
me that whilst poets may have written about their surroundings, it | :22:38. | :22:43.
is the country that they are writing `` fighting for that is prominent in | :22:44. | :22:46.
their writing. I think you get that from all war | :22:47. | :22:51.
poets. They are describing the landscape that they are fighting in, | :22:52. | :22:56.
but their memory takes them back to where they come from. | :22:57. | :22:59.
It is the collection that we have been given from John Jarmain. | :23:00. | :23:07.
Janet has now parted company with most of the correspondence. It is | :23:08. | :23:13.
now in the University. The letter is in the middle with more words in the | :23:14. | :23:16.
margin. It is fantastic to receive these | :23:17. | :23:22.
letters. John Jarmain was a local writer. We have a horrific resource | :23:23. | :23:32.

with other great writers here. Students may discover more about the | :23:43. | :23:46.
poetry of the Second World War, from these same letters that helped Janet | :23:47. | :23:51.
discover more about her family. I wish everyone could read these | :23:52. | :23:56.
letters, because they are a wonderful love story. | :23:57. | :24:05.
It is remembrance weekend. Is it looking like a good weather for | :24:06. | :24:10.
Sunday? I think so. Most of the morning | :24:11. | :24:12.
services should be dry. Saturday might be quite wet, but it | :24:13. | :24:31.
should be brighter on Sunday. The rain will be quite heavy tomorrow | :24:32. | :24:35.
morning. There will be quite a lot of cloud, according to the satellite | :24:36. | :24:42.
picture. All of this cloud is moving our way, but briefly, we will get | :24:43. | :24:47.
some breaks in the cloud. This weather will move in towards dawn to | :24:48. | :24:54.
give this some wet weather at first thing. There will be a risk of some | :24:55. | :24:59.
hail and under, turning more showery. Then we will be between | :25:00. | :25:05.
weather systems. This line of cloud and rain will move in during Sunday | :25:06. | :25:14.
afternoon. It will not be dry all day. But hopefully in the morning it | :25:15. | :25:21.
should be dry. That first rain will move away, and we will have clear | :25:22. | :25:27.
skies overnight and in the morning to drop the temperatures into single | :25:28. | :25:31.
figures. Some it will be cold. By morning, there will be thicker cloud | :25:32. | :25:39.
and more rain. It will all move quite fast. The wins `` the wins | :25:40. | :25:49.
will be quite strong originally. The temperatures will be as low as | :25:50. | :25:56.
three degrees. Quickly, the cloud and the rain will march in. The | :25:57. | :26:02.
temperatures will be between five and seven degrees. It will move | :26:03. | :26:04.
eastwards and then will go brighter. You will notice another band of blue | :26:05. | :26:12.
going across. This will be the rain that goes in during the early | :26:13. | :26:17.
evening. If you pick your times tomorrow, it could be sunny. But | :26:18. | :26:23.
there will be rain later in the day. The breeze will fall over the | :26:24. | :26:32.
evening, though in some areas it will be slightly stronger. The | :26:33. | :26:38.
temperatures will struggle tomorrow. Ten or 11 degrees. For the Isles of | :26:39. | :26:46.
Scilly, it could be quite windy. The times for Hyde water `` for high | :26:47. | :26:56.
water. With onshore winds, none of our beaches will not be very good | :26:57. | :27:05.
for surfing. For the coastal waters, the wins | :27:06. | :27:12.
will may be `` mainly be from the west and north`west. The high | :27:13. | :27:17.
pressure will come our way Saturday night. | :27:18. | :27:20.
Probably on Saturday night, the first proper frost of the season. | :27:21. | :27:26.
And Sunday will largely be dry. For most of us, it will be a dry day | :27:27. | :27:29.
until the afternoon, when there may be some rain. And it will be a wet | :27:30. | :27:38.
day tomorrow. Our Sunday Politics will be looking | :27:39. | :27:42. |
