That's all from the BBC News at six so

:00:00.:00:14.

Two people died and many others were injured.

:00:15.:00:29.

The coach, which had 51 people on board hit a wall.

:00:30.:00:36.

The injured were flown to Derriford Hospital.

:00:37.:00:40.

Tonight, the driver has been arrested on suspicion of dangerous

:00:41.:00:45.

driving. The family of a stabbing victim make

:00:46.:00:46.

a formal complaint about the police. It's claimed the Devon and Cornwall

:00:47.:00:50.

force missed dozens of opportunities to prevent the attack during

:00:51.:00:53.

a five year stalking campaign. And we talk to

:00:54.:00:56.

the twins back home and heartbroken Two people have been killed

:00:57.:00:59.

and 11 people have been injured, eight of them seriously,

:01:00.:01:08.

in a coach crash in Cornwall. hit a wall at one o'clock this

:01:09.:01:11.

afternoon at Morval near Looe. The coach,

:01:12.:01:16.

owned by Carmel Coaches of Exeter, The injured have been taken

:01:17.:01:19.

to Derriford Hospital. Devon and Cornwall Police have

:01:20.:01:24.

declared a major incident. Justin is close to

:01:25.:01:27.

the crash site tonight. Police were called to this tiny

:01:28.:01:40.

village just before one o'clock this lunchtime. Officers tell me it

:01:41.:01:44.

appears the coach hit a hedge just around the corner from here, up the

:01:45.:01:48.

hill. This is a Winding Road. The coach eventually came to rest where

:01:49.:01:54.

you see it tonight. More than 50 people were on board. When officers

:01:55.:01:57.

arrived they were greeted with a number of walking wounded but eight

:01:58.:02:01.

people had to be treated on board the coach for serious injuries. One

:02:02.:02:05.

person died at the scene and another person died on the way to hospital.

:02:06.:02:10.

As I mentioned, the driver of the coach has been arrested tonight on

:02:11.:02:14.

suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and is currently

:02:15.:02:17.

at Launceston police station. In a moment we will hear from the officer

:02:18.:02:21.

leading the investigation and I will be talking to the MP for the area.

:02:22.:02:30.

First this report. A day had in Cornwall turns to disaster. More

:02:31.:02:34.

than 50 people were on this coach as it headed towards loo. At about one

:02:35.:02:39.

o'clock, something went wrong. It looks like the coach crashed into

:02:40.:02:42.

the wall and hedge further up and came to stop here. From what

:02:43.:02:49.

passengers were saying, it ended up from almost turning over and the

:02:50.:02:52.

driver managed to get it back on its wheels before it could tip over. If

:02:53.:02:58.

it had done that it would have come down the hill on its side which

:02:59.:03:01.

would have caused a lot more loss of life. The collision was declared a

:03:02.:03:06.

major incident by police. Emergency services were quickly at the scene,

:03:07.:03:11.

including three air ambulances, two from Devon, one from Cornwall. There

:03:12.:03:15.

were people being treated by paramedics in the road and the rest

:03:16.:03:19.

of the emergency services were alongside the coach and were taking

:03:20.:03:25.

out the windows of the coach. They were extracting other passengers. 11

:03:26.:03:32.

people were taken to hospital. Military helicopters from cull Jos

:03:33.:03:35.

and children helped airlift some of the most seriously injured at

:03:36.:03:43.

Plymouth. `` militarily helicopters helped to airlift. We declared a

:03:44.:03:46.

major incident just after two o'clock which involved 's opening

:03:47.:03:52.

our control centre. We received eight casualties from the scene.

:03:53.:03:57.

Four were serious and unfortunately, one patient died

:03:58.:04:02.

after arriving. Passengers were on a day trip organised by age concern in

:04:03.:04:08.

Exmouth. Grow reaction is devastation and shock. `` where

:04:09.:04:16.

reaction. The coach company said its sympathy was with all those involved

:04:17.:04:20.

in the accident and it was Corp rating in the investigation. This

:04:21.:04:25.

evening the police confirmed the 57 new old driver of the coach has been

:04:26.:04:29.

arrested on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and he

:04:30.:04:33.

has been taking to the police station. They have confirmed that

:04:34.:04:44.

the two people who died were women. With me is the head of the serious

:04:45.:04:48.

collision unit fought Devon and Cornwall. Also a parish councillor

:04:49.:04:55.

and eyewitness. Bring us up to date with the investigation as it stands

:04:56.:05:01.

tonight. At the moment police investigators are at the scene and

:05:02.:05:04.

gathering evidence from the road surface and the vehicle itself, just

:05:05.:05:07.

to establish what has happened. We have got the driver of the coach who

:05:08.:05:12.

is in custody. He has been arrested on suspicion of causing death by

:05:13.:05:16.

dangerous driving. Have you any indication what might have caused

:05:17.:05:21.

the accident? No, it is a bit early. We are still getting witness

:05:22.:05:24.

statements and we will be able to get a clearer picture. Take us

:05:25.:05:35.

through events as they unfolded today. What scene greeted you as you

:05:36.:05:38.

arrive? It was shortly before one o'clock this afternoon. The coach

:05:39.:05:40.

was travelling down the hill. The majority of passengers were able to

:05:41.:05:44.

get off themselves. There were a large tub of ambulance crew here and

:05:45.:05:48.

they were trying to get people off the coach. There were 13 serious

:05:49.:05:52.

casualties on the coach and one died from their injuries. They were

:05:53.:06:00.

joined by air ambulance crews from Devon and Cornwall and also some air

:06:01.:06:08.

ambulance crews. One of the patients died before they got a hospital.

:06:09.:06:13.

Tell us what happened before you came to the scene? I was working in

:06:14.:06:17.

my garden, overlooking the road. I heard the coach stop on heard voices

:06:18.:06:22.

and I assumed there were sheep on the road or something and when I

:06:23.:06:25.

looked I saw the coach with a broken windscreen and it was obvious it was

:06:26.:06:29.

more serious. We called 999 and I came down to direct traffic, because

:06:30.:06:39.

it is a busy road. Once they were getting passengers off we help them

:06:40.:06:41.

around to the offices where we gave them cups of tea and sat down while

:06:42.:06:45.

they awaited a coach to take them on. What that passengers tell you

:06:46.:06:48.

about what happened? They said the coach was out of control in one way

:06:49.:06:53.

or another and that people slid around and as the windows broke they

:06:54.:06:58.

were showered in broken glass. A lot seemed very stoic. Some had

:06:59.:07:04.

scratches and bruises. They were all quite elderly, so we were concerned.

:07:05.:07:09.

This is quite a steep hill and winding road. What is this road like

:07:10.:07:16.

generally, as someone who lives here? It is a nightmare. We have

:07:17.:07:20.

been working long and hard as a parish council with the county

:07:21.:07:25.

council to try and get a speed limit. Cornwall so says no, it

:07:26.:07:30.

doesn't need it. We said a few months ago, is it going to take

:07:31.:07:34.

fatalities to make a difference? It is a 60 limit, vehicles see it as a

:07:35.:07:39.

target rather than a limit. Although the top piece of road is flat and

:07:40.:07:44.

straight, they do not believe the reduced speed signs and try and come

:07:45.:07:49.

down here at 60. It is important to point out at this stage that speed

:07:50.:07:53.

is not clearly a factor at the moment? We don't know. We have heard

:07:54.:07:59.

from what witnesses have said, we need to take statements and we have

:08:00.:08:03.

to have the coach examined to make sure there are no defects, but it is

:08:04.:08:07.

something I will be looking into. I mentioned the scale of the response.

:08:08.:08:11.

In terms of that, how would you describe it? Huge. The Ambulance

:08:12.:08:19.

Services declared at a major incident as they had to get in

:08:20.:08:23.

specialist teams. We are talking 50 casualties potentially. Having said

:08:24.:08:27.

earlier on that you have been campaigning for a change in the

:08:28.:08:30.

speed limit, what happens in terms of your campaign? Sadly we will use

:08:31.:08:37.

this incident as more proof that we need a speed limit and restrictions

:08:38.:08:41.

on this road. Otherwise, this is going to continue and with the other

:08:42.:08:45.

road closed because of the repair works, this is the main route into

:08:46.:08:50.

Lou and an incident like this closes it for many hours. That is what we

:08:51.:08:54.

are worried about and we do not want any more fatalities. We live here.

:08:55.:09:06.

Thank you very much for joining us. Joining us is the local MP from

:09:07.:09:13.

Westminster. I can understand exactly what they are saying about

:09:14.:09:17.

the dangerous nature of the bend. I drive it regularly and it is, when

:09:18.:09:22.

you are local and you know it is approaching as you go along the

:09:23.:09:31.

straight piece, then you do slow down, but if the residents want my

:09:32.:09:36.

support to try to get a reduced speed limit on that road, I will

:09:37.:09:43.

certainly support them 100%. Were you aware of their concerns before

:09:44.:09:47.

today? No, I wasn't. They have clearly written to their local

:09:48.:09:52.

councillor, but I haven't received any communications from anybody

:09:53.:09:55.

about trying to get that speed limit reduced. I'd like to offer my

:09:56.:10:01.

condolences to the families of the people who have sadly lost their

:10:02.:10:07.

lives and the injured as well. And also, my thanks to the emergency

:10:08.:10:13.

services, who I know are absolutely fantastic when we have something

:10:14.:10:16.

like this happen. But we do have to make sure that we do everything we

:10:17.:10:21.

possibly can to prevent this from happening again. What will you be

:10:22.:10:27.

doing, in light of what has happened? I will be contacting the

:10:28.:10:32.

highways department at Cornwall Council. This road is under the

:10:33.:10:38.

responsibility of the council. It is not the highways authority. If I

:10:39.:10:42.

need to contact the Secretary of State for sport, to throw some

:10:43.:10:50.

weight behind that, then I will. `` the Secretary of State for

:10:51.:10:57.

Transport. We will be back later with an update on the situation.

:10:58.:11:03.

The Chief Constable of Avon and Somerset Police, Nick Gargan,

It follows claims of inappropriate behaviour towards

which has now launched an investigation into the allegations.

At least 20 properties in Calstock were left without road access after

:11:47.:11:49.

:11:50.:11:59.

The family of a stabbing victim have made a

:12:00.:12:02.

formal complaint about Devon and Cornwall Police's handling of the

:12:03.:12:04.

five year campaign of stalking she suffered,

:12:05.:12:06.

Spotlight has obtained a copy of the allegations, which run to

:12:07.:12:11.

"missed dozens of opportunities to prevent the stabbing".

:12:12.:12:17.

Our home affairs correspondent Simon Hall reports.

:12:18.:12:19.

You may find some of these pictures distressing.

:12:20.:12:23.

The complaint catalogues five years of stalking.

:12:24.:12:25.

From attacks on Helen's flat and car,

:12:26.:12:27.

to graffiti sprayed around her home,

:12:28.:12:29.

to the attempted murder on the streets of Exeter last year.

:12:30.:12:33.

The allegation is that the police did not treat the case seriously

:12:34.:12:37.

enough and could have prevented the attack which almost took Helen's

:12:38.:12:40.

We fought and we fought. And it never happened. It was always let

:12:41.:12:57.

service. Then we got `` then I got attacked, 24 hours later they were

:12:58.:13:01.

installing covert cameras. I find that very difficult because I think,

:13:02.:13:05.

if these cameras are so difficult to get and there is all the red tape

:13:06.:13:09.

and various things they have to go through to get them, why suddenly

:13:10.:13:13.

does it change after a murder attempt?

:13:20.:13:22.

He'll be sentenced in two weeks' time.

:13:23.:13:24.

Helen's mum and dad also suffered Willis's attacks.

:13:25.:13:26.

the Independent Police Complaints Commission on behalf of the family.

:13:27.:13:31.

The motivation, Helen says, is for stalking to be taken more seriously.

:13:32.:13:36.

Every waking and sleeping moment, your whole life is ruined by it.

:13:37.:13:44.

Even afterwards, when it is over, because of how you have lived for so

:13:45.:13:50.

long, it scars you. It is just horrific. I don't want other people

:13:51.:13:53.

to go through what I have been through.

:13:54.:13:54.

The complaint about the police's handling of

:13:55.:13:56.

No one from Devon and Cornwall Police would be interviewed. A

:13:57.:14:10.

spokesman told us they would call operate fully and he added that the

:14:11.:14:14.

force's professional standards department were carrying out their

:14:15.:14:25.

own review of the case. ACE peaceful protest was held this morning and

:14:26.:14:30.

council offices in a Devon town of the future of its swimming pool.

:14:31.:14:34.

West Devon Borough Council says it cannot afford 150,000 every year

:14:35.:14:39.

subsidising swimming pools in Tavistock and Okehampton without

:14:40.:14:42.

cutting front line services. It stresses no decision has yet been

:14:43.:14:43.

made. Two men who had to be air`lifted off

:14:44.:14:49.

the Arctic ice`cap during a trek for charity are back in Devon recovering

:14:50.:14:53.

from their dramatic ordeal. Identical twins Hugo and Ross Turner

:14:54.:14:56.

from Christow were raising money They had planned to cover 340 miles

:14:57.:14:59.

across the wild and desolate wastes Spotlight's John Ayres has

:15:00.:15:03.

been following their attempt. It's big, it's tough, and very,

:15:04.:15:10.

very cold. The trek in the Arctic started well

:15:11.:15:13.

enough for Hugo, Ross But after eight days,

:15:14.:15:15.

freezing conditions started to take My feet are so`so. `` so sore,

:15:16.:15:34.

really, really sore. My knees are really painful. Everything, my

:15:35.:15:40.

shoulder, the whole right hand side of my body is just excruciating.

:15:41.:15:45.

The twins were driven to this challenge

:15:46.:15:47.

because Hugo broken his neck on a Cornish beach seven years ago.

:15:48.:15:50.

He wanted to give something back after receiving

:15:51.:15:52.

The plan was to trek 240 miles across part of Greenland.

:15:53.:15:59.

It has been the toughest decision by everyone involved. Really, really

:16:00.:16:10.

tricky. But safety is paramount and in an environment like this we don't

:16:11.:16:13.

want to be taking any unnecessary risks, so we're just waiting to hear

:16:14.:16:18.

what time the helicopter can come and pick us up. I hope it is soon

:16:19.:16:22.

because I just want to get off the ice cap now. It has been a pretty

:16:23.:16:32.

miserable morning for everybody. But that's the way it is.

:16:33.:16:35.

Hugo had suffered leg and back injuries during blizzard conditions.

:16:36.:16:38.

The twins are back in Devon and they dropped to minus 30 degrees.

:16:39.:16:50.

The twins are back in Devon and they came to the studio to tell me how

:16:51.:16:54.

they felt after the experience. We are tired. We have only been in

:16:55.:17:00.

Devon for 24 hours, so we are a bit disillusioned. It is weird to be for

:17:01.:17:07.

48 hours on an ice cap with total white nothing and then in a studio.

:17:08.:17:11.

It has happened very quickly. You have been quoted as saying you are

:17:12.:17:16.

dotted? We got halfway, so we did incredibly well to get to the stage

:17:17.:17:21.

we are at. My knee just gave up and as we were at the airbase we thought

:17:22.:17:26.

it would be safest to get a helicopter evacuation from there.

:17:27.:17:31.

There is a small US military base. You are wearing the old`fashioned

:17:32.:17:36.

kit. You were fine. So what does that say about your experiment? It

:17:37.:17:43.

shows that the technology that was used by Shackleton, the explorers of

:17:44.:17:51.

100 years ago, this is just a simple leather boot, whereas I wore these,

:17:52.:17:59.

and I had blisters, I had all sorts of problems with my kit, gloves, I

:18:00.:18:04.

was wearing huge gloves. Ross was just wearing these in `35. It was

:18:05.:18:15.

generally just an eye`opener. No one has compared the new and the old as

:18:16.:18:23.

twins. It is to rectory `` directly comparable. Differences were sure

:18:24.:18:27.

what is better. The old stuff was just amazing. The only difference

:18:28.:18:32.

would be mental attitude. As soon as I got into it I was anxious, second

:18:33.:18:39.

day, it was really good. Will you try again? We will. Whether it is

:18:40.:18:44.

the same route, we will. When you fail on something with 18 month

:18:45.:18:48.

preparation for ten days and we were halfway there, we have got nothing

:18:49.:18:53.

but disappointment. We are really down. All of our efforts are going

:18:54.:19:01.

towards raising money for Spinal Research. We just have to slowly get

:19:02.:19:07.

back into things. Hopefully there will be more trips to come. Good

:19:08.:19:10.

luck and thank you for coming to talk to us.

:19:11.:19:19.

Back to our main story. Two people were killed and 11 injured, eight

:19:20.:19:26.

seriously, in a coach crash. Let's go live to the scene.

:19:27.:19:30.

The police investigation continues tonight. I am told the road is

:19:31.:19:34.

likely to remain closed for at least another three, possibly four hours,

:19:35.:19:38.

while the investigation carries on. In the last few minutes, some of the

:19:39.:19:42.

passengers on board the coach earlier today have arrived back in

:19:43.:19:46.

Exmouth. Emotional scenes as they arrived back home. You can tell,

:19:47.:19:50.

looking at these pictures, how upsetting the event has been for

:19:51.:20:02.

many of the people on board as they were reunited today with their

:20:03.:20:04.

family and their loved ones. A short time ago we heard from age concern

:20:05.:20:09.

in Exmouth. Devastating for the people concerned. Shock from the

:20:10.:20:14.

staff and volunteers. Obviously, our thoughts are with those of the

:20:15.:20:22.

deceased. `` the families of the deceased. Tonight the police are

:20:23.:20:26.

continuing to interview the driver who has been arrested on suspicion

:20:27.:20:32.

of causing death by dangerous driving. Earlier on the programme

:20:33.:20:36.

one of the people who lives close by told me that they have had concerns

:20:37.:20:41.

about this road for some time and have been campaigning for more

:20:42.:20:44.

warning signs and changes to the speed limits and they say they have

:20:45.:20:48.

warned the authorities that it would take a fatality before anything was

:20:49.:20:52.

done. Tonight we have heard from the MP for the area, who was concerned

:20:53.:20:57.

to hear from the residents and was offering to take up their concerns

:20:58.:21:02.

about the state of the road. It has to be said, the police have said

:21:03.:21:07.

tonight that they are still investigating all possible causes

:21:08.:21:11.

for the crash and have not ruled out whether speed is a factor. I walked

:21:12.:21:15.

down the hill earlier the company by the police and you can see earlier a

:21:16.:21:20.

gash in the hedge where the coach struck a hedge before it came to

:21:21.:21:26.

rest here at the village. Back to the studio.

:21:27.:21:31.

Time for the weather. It is not looking too bad. Things

:21:32.:21:40.

are settling down. There is fine settled weather. Next week looks

:21:41.:21:44.

unsettled, I'm afraid. For tomorrow, things really settling down. A fine

:21:45.:21:50.

and dry day. We will see plenty in the way of sunshine. In the lighter

:21:51.:21:54.

winds it is feeling warmer as well. If you take a look at the big

:21:55.:21:57.

picture it you can see the cloud to the eastern side of the UK. For us,

:21:58.:22:02.

we have not fared too badly. There is an area to the south`west, not

:22:03.:22:07.

much clout, all courtesy of a high pressure which is starting to build

:22:08.:22:11.

in. As we get into tomorrow the high pressure becomes more dominant and

:22:12.:22:14.

it does stay with us into Thursday and Friday, into the first part of

:22:15.:22:19.

the weekend, before finally starting to weaken again. Taking a look at

:22:20.:22:23.

that closely, you can see a peppering of showers across the

Somerset. Further to the west, the bulk of Devon and for the Channel

Islands, a bit better today. It was earlier here in Jersey where we saw

:22:38.:22:42.

a baby dry day. The Queen's baton relay was making its way around the

:22:43.:22:50.

islands. You can see the flags blowing in the wind. Hopefully we

:22:51.:22:54.

will see lighter winds tomorrow. Back to Exeter, a bit more in the

:22:55.:23:00.

way of cloud but the foliage springing into life. In the next few

:23:01.:23:06.

days we will see more foliage sprouting and bursting into life.

:23:07.:23:10.

Back to tonight and we have still got one or two showers further to

the east. They will start to clear in the first part of the night. Then

:23:16.:23:20.

it is a clear night. We will see some temperatures falling lower than

:23:21.:23:26.

the past couple of nights. Maybe some patches of mist forming. In

:23:27.:23:33.

Morro locations, particularly further east, we can see as low as

:23:34.:23:38.

three or 4 degrees tonight. To start the day tomorrow, mist patches

around initially. Then it is a dry and bright morning with plenty of

:23:45.:23:49.

the way of sunshine. Some cloud but not enough to spoil the day. And

:23:50.:23:53.

with the light winds it will feel quite pleasant in any sunshine.

:23:54.:24:00.

Temperatures reaching up to 18 degrees further to the east. The

:24:01.:24:07.

only problem with sunshine and light winds and dry air is the pollen

:24:08.:24:12.

creeping up. If you suffer from hay fever, something to bear in mind.

:24:13.:24:18.

The UV reaching level 546. Fairly high sun in the sky. Take the

:24:19.:24:24.

necessary precautions. For the Isles of Scilly for tomorrow, fine and

:24:25.:24:29.

dry. Warm sunshine around and light winds. And the times of high water

:24:30.:24:32.

for tomorrow... The outlook for the next few days,

:24:33.:25:04.

not looking bad. Plenty in the way of sunshine. It should stay dry for

:25:05.:25:09.

most of us for much of the time. Temperatures gradually creeping up.

:25:10.:25:14.

By Friday we could see 18 or 19 degrees. Have a good evening.

:25:15.:25:20.

That is all from us for this evening. More in the late news at

10:25pm. Good night. Can I make something clear to you?
