And the rare Dartmoor discovery that casts light | :00:46. | :00:54.
Eight men have been jailed for a total of more than 59 years for a | :00:55. | :01:01.
drug smuggling operation across the South West using Jaffa Cake boxes to | :01:02. | :01:04.
The gang of 17 men and women took delivery of the drugs | :01:05. | :01:09.
from London and diluted them ready for sale in the West Country. | :01:10. | :01:14.
The police investigation ` codenamed Operation Rosco ` | :01:15. | :01:18.
included surveillance in London, Liverpool, Devon and Cornwall. | :01:19. | :01:20.
John Henderson was in Plymouth Crown Court for the sentencing. | :01:21. | :01:29.
The moment police pounce. A covert investigation into the supply of | :01:30. | :01:40.
cocaine and amphetamines into Devon and Cornwall. It but a lot of | :01:41. | :01:45.
heartache and damage to the communities. Cocaine is an addictive | :01:46. | :01:55.
drug and causes crime and it can result in violence. It could have | :01:56. | :01:59.
caused a lot of damage in the counties. The drugs were coming from | :02:00. | :02:03.
London and the south`east by car. Sometimes even by train. Cocaine | :02:04. | :02:09.
arrived in places where it was dilutive and bulked up to be sold on | :02:10. | :02:13.
the streets of Cornwall and Plymouth. Today these men were sent | :02:14. | :02:19.
to prison for their part in the conspiracy that was large`scale and | :02:20. | :02:23.
lucrative. Police used on supermarket carrier bag containing | :02:24. | :02:28.
blocks of cocaine with a street value of ?45,000. And a packet of | :02:29. | :02:32.
oatcakes and a packet of oatcakes and Jaffa cakes. They did not find | :02:33. | :02:39.
snacks but drugs money. When the smuggling of the careers turned to | :02:40. | :02:44.
amphetamines. A camper van was searched in Plymouth carried 25 | :02:45. | :02:46.
kilos of the drug with a street value of a quarter of a quarter of | :02:47. | :02:50.
?1 million. The driver was jailed for three years and four months. The | :02:51. | :02:54.
lookout was jailed for four years and nine months. Amphetamines were | :02:55. | :02:59.
now coming from Liverpool. This car was stopped on the M5 on its way to | :03:00. | :03:04.
the south`west and found to have ten kilos of the drug. Another carp was | :03:05. | :03:09.
stopped with two kilos. Police suspect that this man as the | :03:10. | :03:14.
ringleader. Today he was jailed. At 18 years, his was the longest | :03:15. | :03:19.
sentence. The judge described him as a professional criminal making money | :03:20. | :03:25.
out of crime. Two men were given suspended sentences and walked free. | :03:26. | :03:30.
The coastguard in much of Devon and Cornwall and Brixham has been | :03:31. | :03:33.
But all that is about to change as a major overhaul | :03:34. | :03:38.
At its heart is a new centre coordinating search | :03:39. | :03:42.
It's based in Hampshire and opened its doors today. | :03:43. | :03:47.
Work currently done by the station at Portland will | :03:48. | :03:49.
transfer there next week with Brixham shutting in November. | :03:50. | :03:53.
Falmouth stays open ` joining the new national network next month. | :03:54. | :03:56.
Alison Johns reports on a highly controversial move | :03:57. | :04:01.
Dave is a fisherman who has been working out | :04:02. | :04:08.
He likens the new National Maritime Operations Centre in Hampshire to a | :04:09. | :04:15.
call centre and is worried about the loss of the local team in Brixton. | :04:16. | :04:20.
You just get the feeling that when something is going on locally, | :04:21. | :04:23.
I also was airlifted off with a suspected heart attack | :04:24. | :04:29.
a couple of years back and you just feel more confident when you think | :04:30. | :04:34.
that it is Brixton, they are within 30 or 40 or 50 miles of you. | :04:35. | :04:39.
Just up the coast, Dave's worries are shared by | :04:40. | :04:41.
I think a major concern is really when you | :04:42. | :04:48.
are in the business of saving lives at sea, every second counts really. | :04:49. | :04:51.
We feel down here certainly that any extension of that response | :04:52. | :04:54.
time is going to put ultimately people's lives in further danger. | :04:55. | :05:06.
We have yet to see any evidence actually that they can still fulfil | :05:07. | :05:10.
their role really and keep response times down. | :05:11. | :05:11.
The MCA says there has been an extensive tensting programme | :05:12. | :05:14.
Live exercises have been carried out with lifeboats | :05:15. | :05:17.
and coastguard rescue teams which it says were very successful. | :05:18. | :05:19.
The end user will see no difference at all so whether you're | :05:20. | :05:22.
in the water or walking along the coast there should be no change in | :05:23. | :05:25.
What this will allow us to do is maintain all the other services that | :05:26. | :05:37.
we required to such as vessel traffic monitoring around the UK, | :05:38. | :05:39.
The UK Maritime safety information broadcast while still delivering | :05:40. | :05:47.
In two months and the National Maritime Operation Centre | :05:48. | :05:50.
takes over from the coastguard team here in Brixton. | :05:51. | :05:53.
The MCA say the modernisation will lead to a more effective | :05:54. | :05:55.
But many sea users here in the South West fear that the loss of local | :05:56. | :06:00.
Protesters have been on patrol overnight gearing up for | :06:01. | :06:08.
the start of the new badger culls in Somerset and Gloucestershire . | :06:09. | :06:11.
Some say they're prepared to break the law | :06:12. | :06:13.
But farmers say the cull is needed to control | :06:14. | :06:19.
As the sun went down over the cull zone, the protesters came | :06:20. | :06:29.
out amid rumours that the shooting was about to start. | :06:30. | :06:32.
The people who are doing in these actions, | :06:33. | :06:34.
the shooters and responsible shooters, if we are in the vicinity | :06:35. | :06:37.
If we are in the facility that means badgers won't be killed. | :06:38. | :06:46.
And so they walked ` about 80 opponents of the cull, | :06:47. | :06:49.
mostly local, some who clearly did not want to be identified. | :06:50. | :06:52.
The protesters say we are now on the edge of the cull zone. | :06:53. | :06:55.
We do not know, they don't know if the cull is going to start | :06:56. | :07:05.
tonight, and if it doesn't then they will back tomorrow the night | :07:06. | :07:08.
But they say this proves they have the numbers to cause problems | :07:09. | :07:18.
for the cull marksmen whenever they get underway. | :07:19. | :07:22.
20 miles away in another corner of the cull zone, another group of | :07:23. | :07:27.
People here have come from all over the country. | :07:28. | :07:32.
Some say they are prepared to break the law if necessary to protect | :07:33. | :07:37.
Potentially they get chopped up or jumped on. | :07:38. | :07:42.
I would say it makes my heart sink to hear the cages are | :07:43. | :07:56.
But those who protest will find little sympathy from farmers whose | :07:57. | :07:59.
livelihoods have been ruined by the scourge of TB in cattle. | :08:00. | :08:02.
We've got to do something about it and it is not desirable | :08:03. | :08:05.
that a disease that is so bad for animals, whether they be | :08:06. | :08:08.
wildlife or cattle, is allowed to run rampant in the countryside. | :08:09. | :08:10.
The arguments over whether or not badgers are to blame | :08:11. | :08:13.
The two sides as far apart as they ever were. | :08:14. | :08:16.
And what is different though is the technology | :08:17. | :08:18.
Night vision lenses and thermal imaging cameras | :08:19. | :08:23.
which they say will help them track the marksman more easily. | :08:24. | :08:34.
Two detectives are having their work monitored | :08:35. | :08:36.
and a call handler has been disciplined after a case in which | :08:37. | :08:39.
The commission said the call was handled poorly. Detectives were | :08:40. | :09:07.
criticised for failing to find his former girlfriend. | :09:08. | :09:11.
The Territorial Army Reserve Centre in Truro, | :09:12. | :09:13.
which was due to be re`located to Devon will now stay open. | :09:14. | :09:16.
The MOD says D company 6th battalion "the Rifles" headquarters will move | :09:17. | :09:19.
to Plymouth but the Truro base will remain open | :09:20. | :09:21.
The move follows a petition which called on | :09:22. | :09:25.
the MOD to retain traditional links between the county and the Army. | :09:26. | :09:28.
The Duke of Cornwall's Light Infantry was the county's regiment. | :09:29. | :09:32.
Obviously we've gone through the antecedent | :09:33. | :09:36.
and the Rifles that have now become the county regiment of Cornwall. | :09:37. | :09:39.
So the historic link ` the golden thread ` | :09:40. | :09:41.
remains and it is important that we keep troops here in the county. | :09:42. | :09:45.
They will mentor our cadets and it will give us a focus | :09:46. | :09:48.
in the county for the Ministry of Defence and the Army in particular. | :09:49. | :09:53.
Scores of young footballers in Exeter were devastated | :09:54. | :09:55.
after the start of the football season was disrupted when gypsies | :09:56. | :09:58.
Several football fixtures had to be cancelled after | :09:59. | :10:04.
around 20 caravans and vehicles forced entry onto the pitches | :10:05. | :10:06.
Today, Exeter City Council began taking legal action | :10:07. | :10:12.
The gypsies say they're simply living their traditional way | :10:13. | :10:16.
Our Community affairs correspondent Carys Edwards reports. | :10:17. | :10:26.
Legal action may be underway to remove the gypsies. For now they are | :10:27. | :10:35.
going nowhere. More than 20 caravans and vehicles remained on the site | :10:36. | :10:38.
along with horses. They are parked along the edges of the football | :10:39. | :10:41.
pitch but all pictures over the weekend had to be cancelled on the | :10:42. | :10:45.
advice of police. More than 200 players were affected including boys | :10:46. | :10:50.
and girls from the Exeter youth league. A number of them were | :10:51. | :10:53.
devastated. The teams have been working hard in preseason and they | :10:54. | :10:59.
were really looking forward to the season. Locals were also concerned. | :11:00. | :11:03.
I have got nothing against travellers and actually I think it | :11:04. | :11:06.
is quite a nice lifestyle but maybe they could have showed a bit more | :11:07. | :11:09.
consideration for the football matches. Terrible. Terrible. I do | :11:10. | :11:16.
not play myself but if I did I would be annoyed. They arrived in convoy | :11:17. | :11:20.
and broke into the park to these emergency gates. As you can see they | :11:21. | :11:24.
have sliced off the end of the emergency aria to gain entry. The | :11:25. | :11:29.
gypsies did not want to be interviewed on camera but told me | :11:30. | :11:32.
they are simply trying to lead their traditional way of life as they have | :11:33. | :11:35.
done for thousands of years. They say they are doing no harm, will | :11:36. | :11:40.
keep the site tidy and will respect local people. They said they had no | :11:41. | :11:44.
idea about the plans for local football. We would have let the kids | :11:45. | :11:54.
watch. We couldn't stop a football match. We would have liked to have | :11:55. | :11:58.
seen it. Today the council began legal proceedings to evict the | :11:59. | :12:01.
gypsies but it will take time to get a possession order from the County | :12:02. | :12:06.
Court. If they refuse to go we will have to do in the procedure but I am | :12:07. | :12:10.
sure these people will see sense. We have been told that they are just | :12:11. | :12:15.
going to stay there for a few days and then they will move on. So the | :12:16. | :12:19.
gypsies will eventually move. Travelling as they have always done. | :12:20. | :12:24.
For now the football pitch lies empty and dog walkers are key ring | :12:25. | :12:27.
`` keeping their dogs on a lead. Vandals have set fire to a pair | :12:28. | :12:33.
of huge straw figures The straw man and | :12:34. | :12:36.
his dog were advertising the annual Crantock Bale Push which has raised | :12:37. | :12:40.
thousands of pounds for charities. The arson attack on Saturday night | :12:41. | :12:42.
came a day after vandals had The Bale Push will take place | :12:43. | :12:45.
on Friday evening. Thousands of people turned out to | :12:46. | :12:49.
a packed Dorset County Show over Organisers were pleased with | :12:50. | :12:52.
the size of the crowds. More than 2000 animals | :12:53. | :12:57.
were shown and there were 90 food stands demonstrating | :12:58. | :13:01.
delicacies produced in the county. A fur pelt found | :13:02. | :13:15.
in an ancient burial chamber on Dartmoor has led experts to believe | :13:16. | :13:17.
that bears once lived on the moor. It's thought the bronze age grave or | :13:18. | :13:20.
cist was possibly Archaeologists say the find is one | :13:21. | :13:23.
of a kind as Jemma Woodman reports. Well, who would have thought that | :13:24. | :13:27.
nearly 4000 years ago bears may well have roamed this wild | :13:28. | :13:30.
and rugged landscape. And we were always told that | :13:31. | :13:32.
the Beast Joining me is Jane from the | :13:33. | :13:34.
Dartmoor National Park. Nicely framed under | :13:35. | :13:40.
this lovely tree. Tell me, could bears really | :13:41. | :13:44.
have roamed Dartmoor? We know that there were bears | :13:45. | :13:49.
around in England as a whole So until about 400AD there were | :13:50. | :13:53.
still bears present in the country. Everything to do with | :13:54. | :13:59.
the cist has been a first actually. I don't think that there is any | :14:00. | :14:07.
other finding of a pelt from this period 4000 years ago within | :14:08. | :14:12.
a burial context in this country. And it was difficult to identify, | :14:13. | :14:15.
wasn't it, why was that? To begin with | :14:16. | :14:17.
when they actually recovered the pelt we thought it was going to | :14:18. | :14:21.
be easy, we could do DNA on it. But unfortunately | :14:22. | :14:25.
because the pelt was in peat it has destroyed any DNA it once contained | :14:26. | :14:28.
so we had to go to an alternative analysis technique and that was | :14:29. | :14:35.
looking at proteins within the fur. I don't begin to understand how that | :14:36. | :14:37.
worked but it has taken a lot of specialists a lot of time and going | :14:38. | :14:44.
through that went through a whole lot of animals that it could have | :14:45. | :14:48.
been, ranging from seals and camels. And now they are absolutely | :14:49. | :14:51.
definite it is a bear. Why was a bear pelt | :14:52. | :15:04.
in this burial chamber? It was actually used to wrap up | :15:05. | :15:07.
cremated remains of the person who had been cremated and | :15:08. | :15:09.
then placed in their cist and it was There is a suggestion that this was | :15:10. | :15:13.
a cloak belonging to this person and was a suitable per thing to wrap | :15:14. | :15:17.
up the remains. There are lots of other things, | :15:18. | :15:20.
weren't there, Over 200 beads, including | :15:21. | :15:22.
amber beads, which obviously In the most beautiful bag in | :15:23. | :15:28.
which all the things were placed so we think that this was the person's | :15:29. | :15:43.
bag, I am saying her because we are Jane, | :15:44. | :15:47.
thank you very much for joining us. You can see and discover more | :15:48. | :15:50.
about these grave goods at an exhibition at Plymouth's | :15:51. | :15:53.
museum which starts this Saturday. To find out more before then, | :15:54. | :15:55.
do join me tonight for Inside Out It's time for the sport now | :15:56. | :15:58.
and there was a dream start for Exeter Chiefs | :15:59. | :16:10.
in the Premiership this weekend as However as one team | :16:11. | :16:13.
in the city celebrated another commiserated ` Exeter City hit | :16:14. | :16:19.
the bottom of the football league. To discuss the contrasting fortunes | :16:20. | :16:22.
I was joined earlier by Torquay United manager Chris | :16:23. | :16:25.
Hargreaves and former professional A great weekend | :16:26. | :16:29.
of sport to talk about but we have I just had a small job on in | :16:30. | :16:36.
the interim but great to be back. We haven't seen you for | :16:37. | :16:48.
so long then all of a sudden you win It is important for us | :16:49. | :16:51.
at the moment. A great win for them this weekend | :16:52. | :16:57.
as well. A tough place to go, | :16:58. | :17:02.
newly promoted Luton. Probably had too much time to think | :17:03. | :17:11.
about it, natural instinct would normally take over | :17:12. | :17:19.
but the winning goal was sublime. I wouldn't have done this | :17:20. | :17:22.
but Dominic did. Brilliant footwork there | :17:23. | :17:31.
and a superb finishe. PLayed in the 21s game | :17:32. | :17:36.
in the week to get In contrast Exeter City haven't won | :17:37. | :17:41.
all season and obviously not No, you can get yourself | :17:42. | :17:47.
into a lot of results. It is a difficult position to be | :17:48. | :17:53.
in and it is a tough job. Mansfield ` big strong side, | :17:54. | :17:56.
quicker to react there and score Mansfield are a big team | :17:57. | :17:59.
and they are always looking for Ten games in, a brilliant goal from | :18:00. | :18:03.
Matt Grimes one of my old sixteens. Just couldn't quite get back | :18:04. | :18:18.
into the game. You are not too worried | :18:19. | :18:21.
about them yet? No, you cannot pass judgement | :18:22. | :18:24.
at this stage of the season. Let's go on to what must be | :18:25. | :18:27.
the result of the weekend. I know, but before I start with this | :18:28. | :18:30.
have to explain these trousers. Normally Chris comes out in mint | :18:31. | :18:37.
green but he's let down today. I invited you to a fancy dress, | :18:38. | :18:40.
you turned up and I didn't. If the coaching team could have | :18:41. | :18:43.
described how they wanted their first game to go this would've | :18:44. | :18:49.
been it. The new players were getting | :18:50. | :18:51.
on the scoresheet. Here is Thomas the Tank Engine | :18:52. | :18:53.
with his signature celebration. The youngsters really showed up | :18:54. | :18:55.
as well. London were not great but the Chiefs | :18:56. | :19:05.
were brilliant. The biggest threat was repetitive | :19:06. | :19:17.
strain injury from the hugging. Another youngster, Jack, | :19:18. | :19:22.
took this ball and you can see why London have got to be worried, | :19:23. | :19:24.
and worried because there were less The youngsters did well and the | :19:25. | :19:32.
new players linking in well there. He is going to be playing | :19:33. | :19:37.
for Namibia in World Cup and he shows that he's got plenty to | :19:38. | :19:39.
offer as well. If you are a Chiefs fan maybe take | :19:40. | :19:42.
a picture of that league table. Normally associated | :19:43. | :19:50.
with footballers. Unfortunately not all results | :19:51. | :19:52.
worked that well for our teams. Albion slipped through a 27`6 defeat | :19:53. | :19:59.
at Doncaster and the Pirates were beaten 29`19 by Yorkshire Carnegie. | :20:00. | :20:02.
Getting off to a good start is important and unfortunately | :20:03. | :20:06.
for those two it didn't happen. Andy, Chris, | :20:07. | :20:08.
lovely to see you again, thank you. In League One, Yeovil Town stretched | :20:09. | :20:16.
their unbeaten run to four matches Aaron Martin scored twice | :20:17. | :20:18.
in the first 25 minutes to put Bradford pulled one back soon | :20:19. | :20:24.
after but AJ Leitch`Smith made sure there'd be no comeback with this | :20:25. | :20:31.
superb strike to seal the win. Roseland gig club took the title | :20:32. | :20:39.
at the Ladies County Championships The Roseland A crew beat | :20:40. | :20:42.

as you like, you see family less than you'd like because we are | :21:07. | :21:09.
on the water in training. We love it | :21:10. | :21:11.
and we're such a tight`knit crew Well picking up as many skills | :21:12. | :21:14.
as you can is a start. And from the playing field to | :21:15. | :21:29.
the growing field ` that's exactly how a Cornish charity | :21:30. | :21:31.
has been helping a group of people with learning difficulties | :21:32. | :21:34.
as Hamish Marshall reports. This is a cricket team of people | :21:35. | :21:38.
in gardens. Those who work on placement with | :21:39. | :21:42.
the college charity of learning It gives them | :21:43. | :21:45.
the life experience and helps them Playing sport helps | :21:46. | :21:52.
build confidence too. What is your strength in cricket, | :21:53. | :21:59.
batting or bowling? It is going to be a good day today, | :22:00. | :22:05.
lots of fun and that. And these are the results | :22:06. | :22:14.
of people in gardens at work. Produce grown | :22:15. | :22:16.
at the hostel is sold fortnightly And the cricket team looks | :22:17. | :22:19.
the part too. Ahead of a fundraising match | :22:20. | :22:26.
against The Eden Project, The cash was raised by investors | :22:27. | :22:28.
putting in small amounts of money. I used crowdfunding | :22:29. | :22:33.
and that was really, really useful. It gave us a lot of exposure | :22:34. | :22:38.
in the community and also we actually raised above | :22:39. | :22:41.
the amount we wanted to so we have On the pitch, Eden bat first in what | :22:42. | :22:51.
is a fiercely contested match. They raised ?800 last year and it | :22:52. | :22:56.
is hoped they would do so again to It helps me get out of the house, | :22:57. | :22:59.
doing something in the community and we grow lettuces, rockets, | :23:00. | :23:04.
we grow runner beans and we have The extra funding is allowing people | :23:05. | :23:15.
to strengthen both at work and It is really like summer is back. | :23:16. | :23:44.
Pretty good for the second week in September. There is more to come as | :23:45. | :23:48.
well. High pressure is well and truly in charge. This time last year | :23:49. | :23:55.
the weather started to change. For this week ahead, it is dry and find | :23:56. | :24:01.
and the warm sunshine continues. The only downside is it will be a little | :24:02. | :24:07.
bit at night. No rain in the forecast. Cloud in the satellite | :24:08. | :24:15.
picture. A lot of it is hazy. The area of high pressure moves around a | :24:16. | :24:17.
little bit over the next few days. This is the middle of the day on | :24:18. | :24:22.
Tuesday. It has moved away certainly by the middle of the day on | :24:23. | :24:24.
Wednesday and it will bring an easterly breeze as we move into the | :24:25. | :24:30.
latter part of the week. Still dry and largely fine and one. Today we | :24:31. | :24:34.
have had a build`up of cloud but the most of us the weather has been | :24:35. | :24:37.
fine. It is quite hazy. This was earlier today at a beach where there | :24:38. | :24:42.
was some lovely weather. Glorious sunshine. They see temperature is 17 | :24:43. | :24:55.
degrees ``. This fine weather continuing. There is not much for | :24:56. | :25:09.
our servers though. `` surfers. Let's follow the progress of what is | :25:10. | :25:13.
happening overnight tonight. Some is forming later in the night and maybe | :25:14. | :25:17.
some fog patches in the valleys. Most of us clear and dried. | :25:18. | :25:21.
Temperatures falling away quite smartly. Last night we had single | :25:22. | :25:25.
figures and the same sort of damage to night but perhaps a degree or so | :25:26. | :25:30.
nowhere. 6 degrees or 7 degrees at the minimum temperature. And for | :25:31. | :25:34.
tomorrow it is a nice day. Ms clearing and a cold start. Sunshine | :25:35. | :25:37.
coming out and it will warm things up and by the time we get to the | :25:38. | :25:42.
afternoon the sunshine will give us temperatures of 90 degrees or 20 | :25:43. | :25:46.
degrees. A few places getting warmer than that, possibly 21 degrees or 22 | :25:47. | :25:51.
degrees. Pretty strong sunshine at this time of year. A dry day here. | :25:52. | :25:59.
Just a bit more of a breeze developing. A bit morbid breeze | :26:00. | :26:02.
developing by the end of the day and it will bring temperatures down a | :26:03. | :26:04.
little bit. Cooler and fresher for the coast and our islands. | :26:05. | :26:26.
Disappointing for our surfers. For many of our beaches there is not | :26:27. | :26:33.
really a wave to serve. For our coastal waters forecast at the winds | :26:34. | :26:36.
are from the East or north`eastern tomorrow. By the time we get into | :26:37. | :26:41.
the evening possibly picking up to a force for two five. Here is the | :26:42. | :26:50.
forecast for the rest of the week. Most of us pleased with what we see. | :26:51. | :26:54.
Whether they is fine and dry. More cloud on Thursday. Generally more | :26:55. | :27:09.
wobbly breeze `` more of a breeze. Have a nice evening. Who needs all | :27:10. | :27:13.
of this when you have September? Thank you. Join us tonight if you | :27:14. | :27:21.
can. We're back tomorrow at 6:30pm. | :27:22. | :27:30. |
