60 jobs at risk as Dairycrest announces it's closing | :00:13. | :00:14.
It's one of the biggest employers in the area and the news has | :00:15. | :00:21.
I have lived here all my life and Dairy Crest and its predecessors | :00:22. | :00:34.
were always here and able to employ a lot of people in the town. | :00:35. | :00:39.
The founder of Shelterbox appears in court again. | :00:40. | :00:41.
Tom Henderson was at the Old Bailey charged with fraud and attelpted | :00:42. | :00:44.
And the family from Cornwall determined to take | :00:45. | :00:48.
their daughter to be a briddsmaid in Bali during term time. | :00:49. | :00:55.
"Shocked and devasted" ` the reaction from the Mayor of Chard | :00:56. | :00:59.
to news that Dairy Crest is closing its creamery with the loss | :01:00. | :01:02.
The company says it's tried to make the site viable for many ye`rs | :01:03. | :01:07.
but that's not been possibld ` despite the best efforts | :01:08. | :01:10.
A consultation with the staff started today. | :01:11. | :01:12.
Our reporter Andrea Ormsby has spent the day in Chard gauging re`ction. | :01:13. | :01:22.
There has been a dairy here for as long as locals can remember. Now the | :01:23. | :01:29.
creamery at Chard makes a r`nge of alcoholic creams but today the 0 or | :01:30. | :01:35.
so staff were told the dairx would close next year. It was a bhg shock | :01:36. | :01:42.
because Dairy Crest has been here for ever, I have lived in Chard all | :01:43. | :01:47.
my life and as far as I remdmber Dairy Crest or its predecessors were | :01:48. | :01:54.
here, so it has been quite ` big shock but obviously I think this | :01:55. | :01:59.
will reverberate through thd community. Devastating for those | :02:00. | :02:05.
people at this time. The unhon Unite says it is all the fault of the | :02:06. | :02:10.
supermarkets. They say therd is no way a dairy can compete with the | :02:11. | :02:14.
price wars in the supermarkdts. Dairy Crest have announced today | :02:15. | :02:18.
that another factory in London will close with the loss of more than 200 | :02:19. | :02:24.
jobs. For people living close to the dairy it is a shock but not all bad | :02:25. | :02:31.
news. It is sad because we have 60 local people working here, but we do | :02:32. | :02:38.
hear that the actual site h`s to be converted to a greenfield shte, so | :02:39. | :02:43.
we are not too unhappy about that. There will be less lorries which | :02:44. | :02:46.
will be nice but the people who have worked here for this time... But it | :02:47. | :02:51.
has not been financially vi`ble for some time. In Cornwall, Davd `` | :02:52. | :02:59.
Dairy Crest invested in a creamery, the company said that was bdcause it | :03:00. | :03:03.
was of rising sales of its cathedral city cheese. Although a depot was | :03:04. | :03:18.
shut with the lost of 60 jobs, Muller says it has made major | :03:19. | :03:23.
investment in Bridgwater. In Chard locals feared the impact wotld the | :03:24. | :03:29.
town hard. I have lived in the village where the factory is all my | :03:30. | :03:34.
life and it is a shame it is closing down. It will really hit thd local | :03:35. | :03:42.
economy. It is the role on shock to the businesses. Nobody from Dairy | :03:43. | :03:48.
Crest was unavailable for an interview but they said in ` | :03:49. | :03:51.
statement that they did not take this lightly. They say each worker | :03:52. | :03:58.
has done their bit to make the plant viable but in the long term they | :03:59. | :04:02.
need to make the decision to close the factory in the second h`lf of | :04:03. | :04:03.
next year. The founder of Shelterbox h`s | :04:04. | :04:17.
appeared at the Old Bailey `ccused of three counts of fraud by abuse of | :04:18. | :04:24.
position. This was the first time that Tom | :04:25. | :04:29.
Henderson, on the left, and his son John, had appeared before a judge. | :04:30. | :04:34.
On the first charge the two are related to have conspired to commit | :04:35. | :04:41.
fraud over a five`year period from 2007. A second similar charge | :04:42. | :04:44.
involves an alleged conspir`cy between them and the Aaron Jarvis | :04:45. | :04:52.
between 2010 and 2012. `` D`rren. Tom Henderson has been accused of a | :04:53. | :04:58.
third count of fraud involvhng misuse of a credit card. Thd fourth | :04:59. | :05:03.
count he faces is the attempted theft of 1000 tents which bdlonged | :05:04. | :05:10.
to Shelterbox. During the short hearing at the Old Bailey the | :05:11. | :05:14.
defendants only spoke to confirm their names. None entered any plea. | :05:15. | :05:21.
Tom Henderson founded the charity in 2000 and was made an OBE in 201 for | :05:22. | :05:28.
services to humanitarian aid. He left the charity in July 2002. It | :05:29. | :05:32.
continues to run under a new management team. The three | :05:33. | :05:36.
defendants will next appear on December the 19 bath and argument | :05:37. | :05:41.
over where the trial will t`ke place will be had. The prosecution has | :05:42. | :05:49.
asked for it to be held nearer to Cornwall because the witnesses are | :05:50. | :05:54.
all from there and the hearhng in London would be expensive. | :05:55. | :06:02.
Torbay Council's planning to cut the number of children it looks | :06:03. | :06:05.
There are currently 314 youngsters in care in the area and the | :06:06. | :06:10.
council wants to reduce that figure to 180 over the next five ydars | :06:11. | :06:13.
It's also looking to reduce the number of children housed in more | :06:14. | :06:16.
expensive residential placelents, using foster care instead. | :06:17. | :06:18.
Pub and club goers across Ddvon and Cornwall could be breathalysed | :06:19. | :06:22.
at the start of their night out as police try to tackle the growing | :06:23. | :06:26.
Devon and Cornwall's Police and Crime Commissioner, Tonx Hogg, | :06:27. | :06:29.
says the number of weekend drink`related incidents in the two | :06:30. | :06:31.
Now he's keen to trial a scheme used elsewhere in the country whdre | :06:32. | :06:38.
people are refused entry to pubs and clubs if they fail a test set | :06:39. | :06:41.
Plymouth University says the ceremonial chairs it's ordered | :06:42. | :06:47.
will cost less than the ?150,00 widely reported last week. | :06:48. | :06:51.
A prototype is seen here with the acting chief executive, | :06:52. | :06:54.
The university says the seven designer chairs whll | :06:55. | :06:58.
The expense has been queried by some staff and students. | :06:59. | :07:07.
Major structural defects have been found in two piers in Torbax, | :07:08. | :07:09.
It says if they're not repaired thex could | :07:10. | :07:13.
It's estimated more than ?5 million is needed to carry out the work | :07:14. | :07:19.
The matter is due to be considered the by | :07:20. | :07:21.
It is important that we address this in the next five to ten years. We | :07:22. | :07:34.
should make a start with thd planning for that so we don't have a | :07:35. | :07:39.
major problem later on but we can't deal with. The good work we are | :07:40. | :07:44.
doing at the moment is essential so that talky and Torbay don't have any | :07:45. | :07:48.
major problems with flooding in the future. `` Torquay and Torb`y. | :07:49. | :07:58.
A judge has criticised Somerset County Council over the way staff | :07:59. | :08:01.
dealt with a severely disabled woman who was not allowed to return home | :08:02. | :08:04.
after bruising was spotted when she was in a respite care placelent | :08:05. | :08:07.
Judge Nicholas Marston said council social services staff had f`iled to | :08:08. | :08:10.
respect the human rights of the woman and her family. | :08:11. | :08:12.
He suggested that social workers had not carried out a | :08:13. | :08:14.
"proper investigation" into the cause of the bruising. | :08:15. | :08:16.
A father from Cornwall says he's shocked and surprised that he's been | :08:17. | :08:19.
refused permission to take his six`year`old daughter ott | :08:20. | :08:21.
The headteacher of St Agnes School said the wedding | :08:22. | :08:25.
of the child's uncle was not an "exceptional circumstancd". | :08:26. | :08:27.
Spotlight's David George has been to meet the family. | :08:28. | :08:33.
I am during Katie and uncle Dan holding hands. | :08:34. | :08:40.
Daisy's picture of what she thinks her uncle's wedding will look like. | :08:41. | :08:50.
She is excited about the wedding in Bali next May. She needs nine days | :08:51. | :08:55.
off during term time is but the head teacher says this is not thd | :08:56. | :08:59.
once`in`a`lifetime event th`t our policy allows. It is not solething | :09:00. | :09:08.
we take lightly, our child's schooling is something we t`ke very | :09:09. | :09:13.
seriously. To be told that xour brother's wedding is not an | :09:14. | :09:15.
important life event was rather shocking. Daisy enjoys school and | :09:16. | :09:21.
does not want to miss any btt she does want to be a bridesmaid. I love | :09:22. | :09:30.
learning, doing writing to learn my handwriting and doing all sorts of | :09:31. | :09:35.
projects. The council says ht is up to individual headteachers to `` to | :09:36. | :09:43.
decide on what are exceptional circumstances. Teachers' | :09:44. | :09:44.
representatives say it is not an easy decision. It makes lifd rather | :09:45. | :09:51.
difficult for head teachers and governors, which is why thex will | :09:52. | :09:56.
have a policy which states what they feel to be exceptional circtmstances | :09:57. | :09:59.
but there is no real guidance on that. Daisy's father has already | :10:00. | :10:08.
spent ?3000 on the tickets. The headteacher said she did not want to | :10:09. | :10:14.
take part in interview until she had spoken to the family but shd said | :10:15. | :10:17.
the governors of the school had been careful to implement the `` be | :10:18. | :10:22.
Department for Education guhdelines in a fair and careful manner. `` the | :10:23. | :10:28.

halfway through construction and hope to be up and running | :10:55. | :11:00.
by next July. But, | :11:01. | :11:02.
as former BBC Radio Devon presenter Dave Wills reveals on tonight's | :11:03. | :11:04.
Inside Out South West, Hemerdon is just the latest in a long lhne | :11:05. | :11:06.
of metal mines on Dartmoor. Hemerdon on the slopes of D`rtmoor. | :11:07. | :11:16.
Underneath here is one of the largest tungsten deposits in the | :11:17. | :11:21.
world. A state`of`the`art mhne is being developed with the promise of | :11:22. | :11:26.
more than 200 jobs. It will be a far cry from the last time metal was | :11:27. | :11:31.
mind on Dartmoor. Nearly all traces of that are long gone. The surface | :11:32. | :11:40.
lodgings of one gold mine h`ve been restored by volunteers. This was one | :11:41. | :11:46.
of eight little minds looking for the same stuff. It is a flaky form | :11:47. | :11:53.
of iron oxide. Around here ht is called shiny ore. It was discovered | :11:54. | :12:05.
that when added to paint it became rustproof. It was used extensively | :12:06. | :12:11.
by great Western on there iconic bridges. It became valuable stuff, | :12:12. | :12:19.
two tins would set you back 100 quid. Sadly, paint manufacttrers go | :12:20. | :12:26.
elsewhere for their shiny ore these days. It became an economic old to | :12:27. | :12:34.
mine here but the mines are still down there. `` uneconomical. This is | :12:35. | :12:46.
a good example of the stuff we were mining. It is very pliable, look. | :12:47. | :12:59.
Dartmoor's workable deposits all but ran out in 1969. Manufacturdrs of | :13:00. | :13:03.
rustproof paint now have to go abroad to get their supplies of iron | :13:04. | :13:11.
oxide. You can see more of that on Inside | :13:12. | :13:18.
Thanks for joining us this dvening ` there's plenty still ahead | :13:19. | :13:21.
It's been an action packed weekend on the water ` from gigs battling it | :13:22. | :13:25.
out in Newquay to a massive, possibly record`breaking sahl | :13:26. | :13:27.
off Weymouth in memory of a much`loved Olympic gold med`llist. | :13:28. | :13:30.
Out. Join me back on dry land, where this Devon vineyard could bd in line | :13:31. | :13:34.
for a record vintage. It's time for the sport now, | :13:35. | :13:39.
and Dave's here with some momentous Now, it's not very often we can | :13:40. | :13:42.
say this ` all our four senhor Commentators from BBC Somerset | :13:43. | :13:55.
and BBC Radio Devon describd the joyous occasions, including | :13:56. | :14:00.
Torquay United's SIXTH consdcutive What a stunning individual goal | :14:01. | :14:02.
from Joel Grant. That was a bit | :14:03. | :14:17.
of individual brilliance and he has got that and he worked | :14:18. | :14:21.
hard today as well so it was a Argyle having to play through, | :14:22. | :14:25.
nice turn by Morgan and a goal! Marvin Morgan turned really | :14:26. | :14:36.
well inside the area. Thomas... I thought he was offside, | :14:37. | :14:38.
no flag. What a good goal from Nathan Thomas, | :14:39. | :14:47.
must be a big question mark Chance here for Exeter, | :14:48. | :14:54.
the ball has gone over the keeper, Graham Cummins has got it, | :14:55. | :15:01.
three in three for him. Butterfield has gone forward, | :15:02. | :15:09.
Moore`Taylor's gone forward, Good ball in again, | :15:10. | :15:12.
it is headed down and in, Who is it running away? Jordan | :15:13. | :15:15.
Moore`Taylor! Young, then, | :15:16. | :15:23.
will take this fourth corner. Headed across by Aaron Downds | :15:24. | :15:24.
and into the back of the net! Cameron plays it back | :15:25. | :15:29.
across goal and it is an own goal! I'm afraid the same can't bd said | :15:30. | :15:40.
for our Championship rugby teams. The Cornish Pirates are now bottom | :15:41. | :15:51.
after a third straight defe`t, Plymouth Albion are two places above | :15:52. | :15:54.
the Pirates after also losing for Despite scoring only one trx to | :15:55. | :16:01.
Gloucester's three, Exeter Chiefs' Gareth Steenson put | :16:02. | :16:07.
over five penalties to help them to The Chiefs, who were top | :16:08. | :16:10.
after edging home 25`22, And there was competition | :16:11. | :16:17.
on the water too. More than 600 rowers from | :16:18. | :16:23.
across the South West were out in force in Newquay this weekend for | :16:24. | :16:26.
the county pilot gig championships. The weather was nigh`on perfect for | :16:27. | :16:29.
the racing, enjoyed by 90 crews The pulling power of Cornish pilot | :16:30. | :16:32.
gig rowing. This is the last race of thd men's | :16:33. | :16:47.
County Championships at Newpuay From 90 crews, six have | :16:48. | :16:51.
made it to the final. Gig rowing is a Cornish passion | :16:52. | :16:53.
that is fast catching on. Newquay Harbour the picturesque home | :16:54. | :16:56.
of gig rowing. The club was founded here in 19 1 | :16:57. | :17:00.
and now the sport is spreadhng. Teams from Swanage, Bristol | :17:01. | :17:03.
and Southampton are competing Over 600 competitives alone, | :17:04. | :17:05.
and on top of that you have spectators, shore parties, tmpires | :17:06. | :17:17.
afloat, we have the lifeboat station, all of the catering, | :17:18. | :17:21.
the ladies that do all that. We float on a tide of goodwhll, | :17:22. | :17:25.
it is not organised entirelx The final is two laps | :17:26. | :17:28.
of a triangular course a mile On board each gig, | :17:29. | :17:37.
six burly rowers giving it their all, the cox navigating using every | :17:38. | :17:43.
trick in the book to get thd edge. It is very easy to lose where you | :17:44. | :17:49.
are and to accidentally hit somebody else so it is a difficult r`ce | :17:50. | :17:57.
but thankfully it all paid off Cheers for Falmouth A, the | :17:58. | :18:00.
County Championship champions. Finally from me, Somerset fhnish | :18:01. | :18:15.
their county cricket season tomorrow It's the first of four days | :18:16. | :18:18.
as Marcus Trescothick's boys aim to Or should that be the start of | :18:19. | :18:41.
autumn on a high? Thanks to everybody who has got in | :18:42. | :18:45.
touch to talk about the little girl being taken out of school. Graham | :18:46. | :18:50.
says it seems desperately unfair to deny her the chance to becole a | :18:51. | :18:58.
bridesmaid, especially given the training days teachers give | :18:59. | :19:01.
themselves. Tony says teachers are not `llowed | :19:02. | :19:05.
holidays during term time so why should their pupils have thdm? | :19:06. | :19:10.
Header from Somerset says she thinks the little girl should be allowed to | :19:11. | :19:16.
be a bridesmaid. If she can't go there the whole ceremony should be | :19:17. | :19:20.
`` could be ruined for the family. It may be autumn | :19:21. | :19:23.
but the weather today across large parts of the South West | :19:24. | :19:26.
has been absolutely glorious. Yes, wine producers here | :19:27. | :19:29.
in the region are really re`ping Spotlight's Emma Thomasson hs | :19:30. | :19:31.
at a vineyard in south Devon. It has been beautiful sunshhne all | :19:32. | :19:41.
day today near Totnes. In 2004 the | :19:42. | :19:48.
English Wine Producers' Org`nisation estimated that 1.9 million bottles | :19:49. | :19:49.
were sold, bringing in ?18 lillion Ten years on, more than thrde | :19:50. | :19:52.
million bottles are being produced The estate here is part of that | :19:53. | :20:08.
success story. Just right for the picking. These | :20:09. | :20:13.
vines have been nurtured here for over 30 years and the weathdr has a | :20:14. | :20:18.
massive part to play in being a make or break harvest. Cracking start to | :20:19. | :20:26.
the year, the bards started very early, followed by some beattiful | :20:27. | :20:32.
flowering. I have been here for 20 years and these are by far the best | :20:33. | :20:35.
grapes we have produced on the estate. How does your vintage | :20:36. | :20:42.
compared to previous years? We normally crop around 60 tonnes a | :20:43. | :20:47.
year, around 60,000 bottles. This year it looks like around 100 | :20:48. | :20:52.
tonnes. I am delighted and this weather is absolutely beauthful | :20:53. | :21:01.
This is the estate selection. After some rainy summers in recent years | :21:02. | :21:04.
the boss has something to celebrate. We have good grape | :21:05. | :21:10.
varieties. The recession of the last ten years was potentially dhfficult | :21:11. | :21:21.
for us but the sales kept going people still wanted that spdcial | :21:22. | :21:25.
bottle for the special occasion and that has really kept us going and we | :21:26. | :21:28.
have come out the other sidd with hardly any wine left, actually! We | :21:29. | :21:34.
are very pleased to have a big crop this year. A large part of the crop | :21:35. | :21:41.
will be used for sparkling wine which has seen the biggest growth. | :21:42. | :21:45.
Something everybody here hopes that wine lovers will continue to have a | :21:46. | :21:50.
taste for. What has been really interesting | :21:51. | :21:53.
spending the day here is seding how they process the wind. The guys you | :21:54. | :22:00.
saw in the film will be herd until midnight processing the grapes that | :22:01. | :22:05.
have been picked today. If xou consider 100 tonnes of grapds are | :22:06. | :22:09.
picked this season, that is a lot of late nights, and sadly for them | :22:10. | :22:14.
every single one of them is going to be sober. | :22:15. | :22:19.
Isn't she lucky being there? It looks glorious. | :22:20. | :22:26.
It has, and I can testify that it has been that glorious outshde for | :22:27. | :22:32.
the last two weeks. I am glad you had a nice holiday, | :22:33. | :22:44.
the South West is looking lovely. Good evening. Morning temperatures | :22:45. | :22:47.
across the region quite a lot warmer than yesterday. As soon as we start | :22:48. | :22:54.
to see these cold nights, vdry quickly the leaves will start to | :22:55. | :22:59.
turn. More cloud in the second half of the week, mainly dry and becoming | :23:00. | :23:07.
more breezy. Looking at the satellite picture, there is not a | :23:08. | :23:11.
lot going on at the moment. There is one stripe of cloud coming through | :23:12. | :23:16.
Northern Ireland, a cold front that will get to us probably overnight | :23:17. | :23:24.
into tomorrow night. It slowly pushes the high pressure aw`y and | :23:25. | :23:28.
the two bands of cloud becole one system around Wednesday. For us | :23:29. | :23:35.
tonight it is clear but it has been a beautiful day today with `lmost | :23:36. | :23:43.
unbroken sunshine for most of us. This is the ex`estuary, where it has | :23:44. | :23:51.
been a lovely day. Temperattres up to 20, 20 1 degrees. The | :23:52. | :23:56.
temperatures last night werd that much lower but for most of ts today | :23:57. | :24:02.
the temperature has been unbroken. Overnight tonight, with the clear | :24:03. | :24:06.
skies, very quickly it will cool down and we will see those | :24:07. | :24:10.
temperatures drop into single figures. A few shallow mist patches | :24:11. | :24:16.
developing but apart from that the skies remaining clear and bx the | :24:17. | :24:20.
morning we will see daytime temperatures starting at around 428 | :24:21. | :24:29.
degrees. `` four up to eight. Tomorrow we have a nice day to start | :24:30. | :24:34.
with, increasing cloud throtgh the day, medium and high level, drifting | :24:35. | :24:39.
in from the North West. That weak weather front is beginning over the | :24:40. | :24:44.
Irish Sea, bringing a few spits of rain as it approaches us. That will | :24:45. | :24:48.
be a feature overnight tomorrow night and into the small hotrs of | :24:49. | :24:55.
Wednesday morning. Temperattres tomorrow up to about 17 or 08 for | :24:56. | :25:02.
most of us, 19 possible, but are largely warm and fine feeling day, | :25:03. | :25:08.
but with a bit more of a brdeze developing. The Isles of Schlly | :25:09. | :25:14.
mostly fine and dry with sole warm sunshine and top temperaturds of | :25:15. | :25:18.
around 16. The times of high water... | :25:19. | :25:26.
This week the surf is also going to pick up so after some poor | :25:27. | :25:33.
conditions in recent weeks we could have up to about one or two feet and | :25:34. | :25:41.
clean but expect that to increase as we move into Wednesday and the | :25:42. | :25:45.
latter part of the week. Thd coastal waters are mainly from the West or | :25:46. | :25:49.
Southwest, fair and generally good visibility. The shape of thd weather | :25:50. | :25:55.
as we move towards the end of the week is to increase the amotnts of | :25:56. | :26:05.
cloud. Another cold tonight but not as low as they have been. | :26:06. | :26:12.
More comments about the pardnts who want to take their daughter out of | :26:13. | :26:22.
school. It is OK to have non`pupil days so if the school can h`ve days | :26:23. | :26:28.
off so can the children. Another one says the school is utterly | :26:29. | :26:32.
ridiculous. We will leave you tonight whth a | :26:33. | :26:38.
look at the spectacular world record attempt for the largest sailing | :26:39. | :26:50.
event ever . | :26:51. | :26:56. |
