Good evening. for the news where you are.

:00:00.:00:17.

It's feared Bickleigh Barracks could lose it's frontline role

:00:18.:00:20.

and become a support base if future cuts to the number of

:00:21.:00:23.

The Ministry of Defence is reported to be considering reducing

:00:24.:00:26.

the overall number of Marines, and removing the frontline role

:00:27.:00:29.

of one of its commando units, in response to a multi-billion pound

:00:30.:00:31.

Well, earlier this evening, Neil Gallacher was at

:00:32.:00:34.

Well, this latest concern has emerged in the form of the lead

:00:35.:00:39.

story in today's Times, which said the Armed Forces

:00:40.:00:41.

require further budget cuts to balance the books.

:00:42.:00:43.

It said at the brunt of those budget cuts are likely to be felt

:00:44.:00:47.

And the Royal Marines base that is likely to see the most

:00:48.:00:51.

significant change appears to be this a place, which is likely

:00:52.:00:55.

to lose its operational front line status and will instead become

:00:56.:00:59.

a support base, so doing things such as training and in the process,

:01:00.:01:02.

losing maybe 200 of its 600-700 Royal Marines personnel.

:01:03.:01:05.

Well, the Defence Secretary was given ample opportunity to deny

:01:06.:01:10.

It is noticeable that you are not saying that the size

:01:11.:01:21.

of the Royal Marines will not be cut.

:01:22.:01:23.

What I am saying to you is we have 7,000 Royal Marines

:01:24.:01:26.

and it is for the First Sea Lord, who runs the Royal Navy to look

:01:27.:01:29.

all the time at the balance of Marines and sailors,

:01:30.:01:32.

and I have not agreed any cut in in the size of the Royal Marines.

:01:33.:01:35.

Do we think this really is another serious cut on the way?

:01:36.:01:39.

We put that question to a Plymouth -based defence expert.

:01:40.:01:42.

It's like Christmas comes once a year and so does this story

:01:43.:01:49.

Possibly, this is it and they will take a hit and it

:01:50.:01:59.

will have no logic and it will damage the UK's defences,

:02:00.:02:02.

This has become an era of more or less continual change

:02:03.:02:05.

for the Armed Services and it seems as though the only thing we can say

:02:06.:02:09.

tonight with any certainty is that that change isn't over yet.

:02:10.:02:15.

Now a brief roundup of other stories making the news tonight:

:02:16.:02:18.

After years of travelling hundreds of miles outside

:02:19.:02:20.

the county for treatment, young people with mental health

:02:21.:02:22.

problems in Cornwall will finally be treated closer to home.

:02:23.:02:24.

Central funding has been announced for a dedicated unit

:02:25.:02:27.

A Cornwall care home business has stopped using a group of migrant

:02:28.:02:38.

carers over concerns they were working illegally.

:02:39.:02:40.

Cornwallis Care Services says it inherited the migrant workers

:02:41.:02:42.

from the Homes' previous owners Morleigh.

:02:43.:02:44.

It says they did not have the necessary rights

:02:45.:02:46.

The Mayor of Holsworthy has told campaigners tonight

:02:47.:02:51.

he believes their local hospital will reopen to inpatients

:02:52.:02:57.

Organisers say around 300 people turned out

:02:58.:03:08.

to form a red line around Holsworthy Community

:03:09.:03:10.

The Trust says concerns over the high number of agency nurses,

:03:11.:03:14.

low bed occupancy and staff sickness forced the temporary

:03:15.:03:16.

The hospital is still open for other services.

:03:17.:03:19.

This weekend is the 30th anniversary of Cornwall's air ambulance.

:03:20.:03:21.

The charity has just announced plans to fund-raise for a new,

:03:22.:03:24.

The air ambulance is called out to around 700 emergencies per year.

:03:25.:03:28.

The Cornwall Air Ambulance's radio callsign has always

:03:29.:03:32.

been Heli-Med Zero One because it was the first air

:03:33.:03:35.

Today, the charity which runs it has two aircraft.

:03:36.:03:38.

They're paid for through charity donations from

:03:39.:03:40.

Today, there are 20 air Ambulance Services in Britain,

:03:41.:03:49.

In fact, Cornwall's was known as the first air ambulance.

:03:50.:03:55.

The service started on April 1st, 1987, the first ever call out

:03:56.:03:58.

Porthcurno Beach, a young lady had jumped off rocks, spinal injury.

:03:59.:04:05.

And from far West Cornwall, the air ambulance was able

:04:06.:04:07.

As we landed, she said this is a marvellous service,

:04:08.:04:12.

And Nigel, my colleague looked at his watch and said

:04:13.:04:19.

Since that first launch in 1987 Heli-Med Zero One have carried

:04:20.:04:23.

out 26,373 missions, saving lives and bringing help to

:04:24.:04:26.

A car stopped in the road in front of me and without any warning

:04:27.:04:46.

he crossed the road, hit me, ran over me, literally.

:04:47.:04:49.

The next thing I know, I'm being airlifted.

:04:50.:04:51.

If it wasn't for them I wouldn't be here.

:04:52.:04:55.

The focus for the charity now is to replace this aircraft

:04:56.:04:59.

with new ones that are bigger, faster, and can operate at night.

:05:00.:05:20.

Disability groups say new parking charges due to come in in Plymouth

:05:21.:05:27.

will put people's life in -- safety at risk. The local authority says it

:05:28.:05:34.

has carried out a full public consultation on the plans but there

:05:35.:05:37.

are concerns that the council has rushed through the changes without

:05:38.:05:40.

ensuring all meters are safe to access.

:05:41.:05:41.

An 11-year-old Devon schoolboy completed his

:05:42.:05:43.

unique charity challenge at Newton Abbot racecourse tonight.

:05:44.:05:46.

James Clarkson has spent all week running around every National Hunt

:05:47.:05:49.

That's 34 courses and about 50 miles in distance on challenging ground.

:05:50.:05:55.

So far he's raised ?10,000 for the Injured Jockeys Fund.

:05:56.:06:04.

Now let's check out the weather with David.

:06:05.:06:12.

Some sunshine, but also some showers.

:06:13.:06:17.

Now, the showers could be quite heavy so we start the weekend

:06:18.:06:19.

You get some sunshine and it will be a bit misty and quite

:06:20.:06:24.

cool through the night, but a usable weekend,

:06:25.:06:26.

One weather front giving us rain tonight will move away and we're

:06:27.:06:30.

left with an area of low pressure, which means plenty of showers

:06:31.:06:35.

to come as we move through the day on Saturday tomorrow.

:06:36.:06:38.

By the time we get to Sunday all of that will have

:06:39.:06:41.

But some this rain this evening could turn out to be

:06:42.:06:44.

quite heavy in places, moving pretty fast and eventually it

:06:45.:06:47.

What will be left is a scattering of showers, some clear skies

:06:48.:06:51.

and temperatures no lower than between seven and 9 degrees.

:06:52.:06:53.

Tomorrow we should get some sunshine, especially around

:06:54.:06:55.

the coast and for the islands, but I think inland the showers

:06:56.:06:58.

could well be heavy, with the risk of hail and thunder.

:06:59.:07:01.

11 or 12 degrees will be the maximum temperature with the winds

:07:02.:07:08.

As we move into Sunday it is a completely different story.

:07:09.:07:13.

Sunday should be a fine and dry day with light winds

:07:14.:07:16.

The outlook as we move into next week is for some settled weather

:07:17.:07:21.

and just a bit of patchy rain Monday night and into Tuesday.

:07:22.:07:24.

Thank you for your company. Good night.

:07:25.:07:37.

Hello. There the weekend is here and Sunday looks like being the better

:07:38.:07:43.

day of the two. We're going to start the weekend, a new month, with

:07:44.:07:46.

sunshine and April showers. Those fade away overnight. Saturday night

:07:47.:07:48.

could be chilly.

:07:49.:07:50.
