Good evening. for the news where you are. | :00:12. | :00:13.
A man has been taken to hospital after the car he was in fell 60 feet | :00:14. | :00:16.
over a cliff on the north Cornwall coast. | :00:17. | :00:19.
Emergency services were called to Polzeath just before | :00:20. | :00:22.
Our reporter Christine Butler reports. | :00:23. | :00:27.
Looking over the cliff, it's a shocking view. | :00:28. | :00:31.
Police have told me the gentleman was parked in one of these parking | :00:32. | :00:35.
bays here and he went into reverse, they don't know how, | :00:36. | :00:39.
but certainly he took this post down here. | :00:40. | :00:41.
You can see some tyre tracks in the grass and he shot up over | :00:42. | :00:45.
this hill and down the cliff the other side. | :00:46. | :00:48.
That is about a 50-60 foot drop and you can see | :00:49. | :00:52.
The driver's side facing the floor, if you like, | :00:53. | :00:58.
He was rescued with the help of coastguard, the RNLI lifeguards, | :00:59. | :01:05.
fire and ambulance, but ultimately they had to recover him | :01:06. | :01:08.
from the vehicle, which is down in the cove there on the sand, | :01:09. | :01:12.
and then into a rip, where they then conveyed him around | :01:13. | :01:16.
to the beach where the air ambulance was waiting. | :01:17. | :01:18.
And he was lifted by helicopter to Derriford Hospital. | :01:19. | :01:21.
The casualty was conscious and complaining of chest injuries. | :01:22. | :01:26.
He was very fortunate that people saw what was going | :01:27. | :01:29.
on and they responded really quite quickly, because it is quite | :01:30. | :01:34.
Police are still investigating what happened and will consider | :01:35. | :01:38.
recovery of the vehicle from the beach tomorrow. | :01:39. | :01:46.
Secondary schools in Devon say they are cutting hundreds of jobs | :01:47. | :01:50.
and removing the number of courses on offer to balance their books. | :01:51. | :01:54.
Information given to the BBC from 27 secondary schools reveals more | :01:55. | :01:59.
than 80 teaching assistant and 50 teaching posts will go | :02:00. | :02:04.
A subject these students have chosen to do, but one | :02:05. | :02:15.
It is, like, one of my favourite lessons, so it is quite worrying | :02:16. | :02:22.
that I might not be able to do it any more. | :02:23. | :02:25.
If we do our shows and stuff, if the lights break, | :02:26. | :02:28.
we won't have the lights for our productions | :02:29. | :02:30.
Reducing the number of courses on offer is just one way schools | :02:31. | :02:33.
It is something we have heard before, now headteachers in 13 | :02:34. | :02:39.
counties, including Devon and Cornwall, have crunched | :02:40. | :02:43.
the sums and say thousands of teaching jobs are being cut. | :02:44. | :02:48.
When I took over at Newton Abbot College, | :02:49. | :02:50.
I had ten on the senior team and then in September, | :02:51. | :02:53.
when we reopen for the new academic year, I will have six in total. | :02:54. | :02:57.
We will be running curriculum with less staff which will lead | :02:58. | :03:00.
to increasing class sizes, so we have to ensure that | :03:01. | :03:03.
when we are delivering that curriculum, that the quality | :03:04. | :03:06.
of the lessons is still where it should be. | :03:07. | :03:08.
Devon has taken the unusual step of collating its data. | :03:09. | :03:11.
284 posts in secondary schools here will go and that includes 86 | :03:12. | :03:16.
teaching assistants, 55 teachers, 35 senior leaders, | :03:17. | :03:21.
There are also extra curricular activities which are being reduced | :03:22. | :03:27.
Even providing transport for vulnerable children has been | :03:28. | :03:34.
affected in all but one of the 27 secondary schools surveyed. | :03:35. | :03:39.
And headteachers are taking pay cuts to protect other posts. | :03:40. | :03:44.
The children in this country are the future of this country | :03:45. | :03:48.
and if we not providing them, all of them with equitable | :03:49. | :03:51.
opportunities to have an academic education, to have good enrichment | :03:52. | :03:56.
education, what is the future of this country going to look | :03:57. | :03:58.
The Department for Education says it hasn't reduced the money it gives | :03:59. | :04:04.
schools in real terms, but with rising costs, | :04:05. | :04:08.
headteachers say a funding crisis is well and truly underway. | :04:09. | :04:17.
In a month we go to the polls in the general election | :04:18. | :04:20.
Our political editor Martyn Oates is here with us this evening. | :04:21. | :04:27.
As well as rising costs overall, there is a row about how funding | :04:28. | :04:31.
is allocated throughout the country, isn't there? | :04:32. | :04:33.
For years, pupils in rural areas like Devon have received | :04:34. | :04:38.
significantly less money per head than the national average. | :04:39. | :04:40.
Been a lot of campaigning about that. | :04:41. | :04:42.
Recently the government has come up with proposed changes. | :04:43. | :04:44.
The problem is that has resulted in quite a lot of schools in places | :04:45. | :04:48.
like the south-west and elsewhere ending up with even less money. | :04:49. | :04:52.
As you can imagine, a lot of Conservatives | :04:53. | :04:54.
locally have taken issue with their own government on this. | :04:55. | :04:56.
That is continuing even in a general election campaign. | :04:57. | :04:59.
They want the Prime Minister to change her mind. | :05:00. | :05:02.
The problem is if she does, what do you say to the many schools | :05:03. | :05:05.
in the South West who have got more money from these changes? | :05:06. | :05:09.
What are the main parties saying about education in the run-up | :05:10. | :05:12.
A big row among the Conservatives over this. | :05:13. | :05:18.
Among the opponents are seven former MPs in Devon who want to be | :05:19. | :05:21.
Lib Dem, Labour and Ukip politicians have been very critical | :05:22. | :05:26.
of the proposed changes, but not yet, as far as I can see, | :05:27. | :05:29.
come up with any concrete alternatives, but of course | :05:30. | :05:31.
we haven't seen the party manifestos yet. | :05:32. | :05:33.
A Somerset woman who was attacked by her boyfriend has posted online | :05:34. | :05:41.
pictures of her battered face to highlight the problem | :05:42. | :05:45.
Caroline Way was beaten up three years ago. | :05:46. | :05:50.
In response, she took selfies of her face for six weeks afterwards. | :05:51. | :05:54.
Caroline says she wants the pictures to act | :05:55. | :05:58.
as a warning to other women in potentially abusive | :05:59. | :06:01.
And here was exactly where it happened. | :06:02. | :06:08.
It is not easy for Caroline Way to relive what happened in this | :06:09. | :06:14.
I was on the floor and he pinned my arms to my side and sat on me, | :06:15. | :06:21.
so that I couldn't fight back, strangled me and then | :06:22. | :06:24.
Then said he was going to take me upstairs | :06:25. | :06:29.
She did survive, but her injuries were horrific. | :06:30. | :06:32.
Broken jaw, cracked eye socket, blurred vision. | :06:33. | :06:35.
And in the days that followed, she took selfies, photos | :06:36. | :06:38.
Three years on, she has decided to post these pictures online | :06:39. | :06:44.
as a warning to other women in potentially abusive | :06:45. | :06:48.
I think enough time had passed for me to have dealt | :06:49. | :06:52.
with a lot of the raw, emotional side of things and I just | :06:53. | :06:56.
wanted to make sure that if I can help anyone to not get themselves | :06:57. | :07:02.
into this situation, then that was the reason behind it. | :07:03. | :07:05.
Caroline's boyfriend at the time was given a two-year | :07:06. | :07:10.
She says that in the eight years they were together, | :07:11. | :07:15.
this was the first time he had physically assaulted her. | :07:16. | :07:19.
Yet with hindsight, she should have seen the warning signs. | :07:20. | :07:21.
It was an afternoon of celebration in Plymouth, as for the first time | :07:22. | :07:34.
in more than a decade, the Pilgrims secured promotion. | :07:35. | :07:37.
Thousands of Plymouth Argyle fans turned out to cheer the players | :07:38. | :07:41.
on as they toured the city in an open-top bus. | :07:42. | :07:44.
It has been an absolutely brilliant evening down | :07:45. | :07:50.
here at the Council House, and, well, the fans are starting | :07:51. | :07:53.
to go home now, but, boy, have they celebrated hard. | :07:54. | :07:57.
The players arrived down here on an open-top bus. | :07:58. | :08:00.
It was fantastic to be part of it and just close up with the players | :08:01. | :08:08.
and see them enjoying themselves, and the kids running | :08:09. | :08:10.
There was a car that we heard five times beeping its horn, | :08:11. | :08:14.
that we caught up with three or four times and really, for them, | :08:15. | :08:17.
it's a great achievement this year to get promotion and this sort | :08:18. | :08:20.
of evening is great for them to meet the fans, the fans to see them | :08:21. | :08:24.
What comes next is going to be interesting watch. | :08:25. | :08:27.
And the fans are still here, they are very loyal, aren't they? | :08:28. | :08:30.
There was quite a few hundred as they were going down the main | :08:31. | :08:36.
People stood on bridges clapping, kids running alongside, | :08:37. | :08:39.
it really was fantastic to get down here. | :08:40. | :08:41.
Looking to League 1 and next season now, who knows? | :08:42. | :08:47.
Will Exeter City be joining Plymouth Argyle? | :08:48. | :08:49.
Time for the weather. David is here. Lovely day today. Yes and there is | :08:50. | :09:02.
more to come. This is our look forward. It looks like we will see a | :09:03. | :09:08.
change at the end of this week. We start to see some thicker cloud and | :09:09. | :09:13.
potentially outbreaks of rain. Chilly nights ahead of us. It is | :09:14. | :09:18.
this week and the weekend. this week and the weekend. | :09:19. | :09:23.
Temperatures start to come up so we hold onto this warmth but we do ten | :09:24. | :09:30.
more unsettled. High-pressure covering most of the United Kingdom. | :09:31. | :09:33.
After Wednesday, this area of low pressure creeps up and introduces | :09:34. | :09:40.
more cloud, potentially showers on Thursday and more persistent rain on | :09:41. | :09:45.
Friday. Into the weekend with south-west winds, so we will keep | :09:46. | :09:49.
these temperatures but a lot more unsettled. And the potential for | :09:50. | :09:55.
rain. Overnight it is already chilly and night-time temperatures will get | :09:56. | :10:00.
down to four or 5 degrees. Not quite cold enough for a touch of frost but | :10:01. | :10:05.
a cold start tomorrow, but also a fine one. More cloud creeping in | :10:06. | :10:11.
from the east and every now and then, it will blot out the sunshine. | :10:12. | :10:16.
But the cloud will break up into the afternoon and then we see some good | :10:17. | :10:20.
temperatures, 16, possibly 17 degrees again. Along the coast it is | :10:21. | :10:28.
cooler at 14 or 15. Towards the end of the week, more cloud on Thursday | :10:29. | :10:34.
that has the potential to produce showers but by Friday we see more | :10:35. | :10:39.
persistent rain and that may well be with us into the weekend. Generally | :10:40. | :10:44.
more unsettled, also the breeze picking up but it does stay quite | :10:45. | :10:51.
mild. That is it from us for the moment. Join us tomorrow morning | :10:52. | :10:57.
from 6:25am. From the late team, good night. | :10:58. | :11:02.
will become drier and feel warm. Now the National forecast. | :11:03. | :11:08.
Good evening. A quiet day on the weather front but we still managed | :11:09. | :11:17.
to have some huge contrasts in the weather. This was a beautiful | :11:18. | :11:21.
picture from Cumbria, blue skies and crystal clear blue skies in Argyll | :11:22. | :11:29.
and Bute but closer to the north coast, it sends shivers down your | :11:30. | :11:33.
spine! Chilly and cloudy all along that cost this bank of cloud that | :11:34. | :11:39.
sliced the country in half, cool and cloudy to the east and to the West | :11:40. | :11:44.
had sunshine. But it still been dry and it will stay that way for most | :11:45. | :11:49.
of the week. As we get into Friday, there is some rain on the way. In | :11:50. | :11:54.
the short-term, not much happening in the next few hours, quite a bit | :11:55. | :11:58.
of cloud in most of England and Wales but many northern and western | :11:59. | :12:02.
parts, the stars are out. Temperatures not | :12:03. | :12:04. |
