Good afternoon. That's all from the BBC news.

:00:10.:00:10.

The police say women from Central and Eastern Europe are being forced

:00:11.:00:14.

into sexual slavery in a rising number of so-called pop-up brothels

:00:15.:00:16.

14 have appeared in one Cornish town alone since last July.

:00:17.:00:24.

From Newquay, Denis Nightingale reports.

:00:25.:00:28.

One evening, a man came knocking at a guesthouse door.

:00:29.:00:35.

Basically asked me how much I charged assuming

:00:36.:00:38.

that I was part of it, and I just told him to go away.

:00:39.:00:43.

And what did you think of that when it happened?

:00:44.:00:45.

It was the first indication Ellen had that there was a brothel

:00:46.:00:51.

where three women were working just two doors down from her.

:00:52.:00:54.

It was one of 14 brothels in the town discovered since last July.

:00:55.:01:00.

I didn't realise it was that number and of course that is 14 too many.

:01:01.:01:05.

As a town, we wouldn't want people to associate Newquay

:01:06.:01:08.

A search of sites on the internet shows many of the pop-ups appear

:01:09.:01:14.

to be staffed by women from Central and Eastern Europe.

:01:15.:01:19.

The police say they treat the women as victims but they say they can't

:01:20.:01:22.

allow the pop-ups across Cornwall and Devon to stay open.

:01:23.:01:25.

We couldn't condone the running of a brothel and a lot of the pop-up

:01:26.:01:29.

brothels are in summer lets and rental apartments

:01:30.:01:32.

and we are duty bound to inform the owner of what's

:01:33.:01:34.

Inspector Meredith says it won't be easy tracking down the international

:01:35.:01:40.

gangs behind the sex trafficking, but he says the police

:01:41.:01:42.

We are safeguarding the women that are in these pop-up brothels.

:01:43.:01:49.

One of our drives is to gather intelligence and from gathering

:01:50.:01:52.

intelligence that would give us, one, a picture to find out what's

:01:53.:01:55.

going on and help us to scope the nature of the problem,

:01:56.:01:57.

but, two, to help formulate the proactive operations

:01:58.:02:00.

against persons that are behind modern slavery and sex trafficking.

:02:01.:02:05.

For Ellen, the local community must be protected.

:02:06.:02:09.

This road has got quite a few children in it.

:02:10.:02:14.

Also, being a guesthouse, I have guests who I feel I have to protect.

:02:15.:02:20.

Campaigners calling for improved rail services and cheaper fares say

:02:21.:02:29.

the region is being treated as the end of the line.

:02:30.:02:33.

The Trades Union backed Action for Rail were at stations today

:02:34.:02:37.

calling on passengers to join their fight.

:02:38.:02:40.

They say fares need to be cut rather than increased.

:02:41.:02:43.

A train coming down the line from London this morning.

:02:44.:02:49.

But for the passengers on it, the prices have gone up.

:02:50.:02:53.

The average rise of more than 2% came into force yesterday.

:02:54.:02:57.

That sees an any-time return from Birmingham

:02:58.:02:58.

And 20 pence has been added to a day-return

:02:59.:03:04.

I think they've always been too expensive in England.

:03:05.:03:09.

I come back every now and then, and it always strikes me how

:03:10.:03:14.

expensive the train fares are in England.

:03:15.:03:16.

It would probably cost me more in car fares, in petrol.

:03:17.:03:25.

Passengers arriving at Exeter St Davids this morning

:03:26.:03:27.

were met by these campaigners who are pushing for a better deal.

:03:28.:03:32.

We need a second route via Oakhampton.

:03:33.:03:37.

We need more work to be done on the Dawlish seawall.

:03:38.:03:41.

We need more investment into Cornwall.

:03:42.:03:43.

We need better infrastructure in the south-west.

:03:44.:03:46.

I checked a few moments ago to see how much it would cost

:03:47.:03:53.

And if you say, what about booking in advance?

:03:54.:04:00.

I checked the same train for a month's time.

:04:01.:04:03.

The government says those fares are funding record investment.

:04:04.:04:08.

Campaigners though are challenging it to show that's

:04:09.:04:14.

Now a round up of other news this lunchtime.

:04:15.:04:21.

Christopher Tester, who was shot in the head during a robbery

:04:22.:04:23.

at his parents' restaurant in Antigua, is back in the UK

:04:24.:04:26.

after a public appeal to raise money to fly him home.

:04:27.:04:31.

The 37-year-old from Torquay landed at Exeter late last night.

:04:32.:04:34.

He is now in Derriford Hospital in Plymouth.

:04:35.:04:37.

Police have issued this photo of a 76-year-old man who has been

:04:38.:04:40.

missing from Bideford since New Year's Day.

:04:41.:04:42.

They say they are extremely concerned for Clive

:04:43.:04:44.

Officers, police dogs, the force helicopter and coastguards

:04:45.:04:49.

He is thought to be wearing dark clothes and a dark woolly hat.

:04:50.:04:55.

The Somerset-based explorer Sir Ranulph Fiennes is setting off

:04:56.:04:58.

to climb the world's second highest mountain.

:04:59.:05:01.

His trek to the top of Mount Aconcagua in Argentina

:05:02.:05:03.

is part of a challenge to become the first person to cross both polar

:05:04.:05:07.

ice caps and climb the highest mountain on each continent.

:05:08.:05:13.

Now the prospect of reopening a old mine in an Area

:05:14.:05:15.

of Outstanding Natural Beauty might not be appealing

:05:16.:05:18.

to many communities, but in East Cornwall the idea

:05:19.:05:21.

appears to have received a surprising reaction.

:05:22.:05:24.

As our business correspondent Neil Gallacher explains,

:05:25.:05:27.

the local mayor says that if the plan doesn't come

:05:28.:05:29.

to fruition, people might even be disappointed.

:05:30.:05:36.

Not much remains of the old Redmoor mine on the edge of Callington

:05:37.:05:40.

but there's a lot of tin here and if tin prices keep

:05:41.:05:43.

rising it may become economic to dig it out.

:05:44.:05:48.

Mining specialists have been consulting on plans

:05:49.:05:50.

First reactions locally have been quite positive.

:05:51.:05:54.

Kelly Bray is crying out for regeneration.

:05:55.:05:57.

It will be wonderful if new jobs were brought in and also new people

:05:58.:06:02.

We all bought knowing that there is mining happening,

:06:03.:06:05.

in the area, or was happening in the area, so it's not

:06:06.:06:08.

Cornwall historically is a mining county.

:06:09.:06:13.

So, from that point of view, very, very positive and obviously

:06:14.:06:19.

people are concerned, as we are.

:06:20.:06:23.

You've still got to take into account residents' concerns

:06:24.:06:25.

and the environmental impact but we've been assured

:06:26.:06:28.

by Cornwall Resources that this will be managed correctly

:06:29.:06:32.

and obviously we will be keeping an eye on that as part

:06:33.:06:35.

Those involved with the scheme say a mine would have less impact

:06:36.:06:40.

on the village of Kelly Bray than was seen at Hemerdon

:06:41.:06:43.

near Plymouth where a tungsten mine restarted.

:06:44.:06:46.

This would be a very different mining operation to Hamerdon.

:06:47.:06:48.

Although the deposit is close to the southern part of Kelly Bray,

:06:49.:06:53.

we would be looking to site any processing plant or waste tips some

:06:54.:06:56.

distance away to minimise the impact on local residents and communities.

:06:57.:07:03.

It would also be tens of millions of pounds to be

:07:04.:07:10.

A bright but cold start to the day. A really cold start, yes. A lovely

:07:11.:07:27.

start, gorgeous start for many of us. We have this lovely photo. Blue

:07:28.:07:34.

skies. This is across true row. With those clear skies overnight, it

:07:35.:07:38.

meant that frosty start to things. Exeter Airport, the coldest spot in

:07:39.:07:46.

the country, minus seven degrees. Tonight, patchy frost but not as

:07:47.:07:50.

cold. It's thanks to the high pressure in charge. It's given us

:07:51.:07:54.

sunshine today but unfortunately, we have a weather front for tomorrow.

:07:55.:07:58.

It is a weak affair but it pushes in more cloud. Through the afternoon,

:07:59.:08:03.

for most of us, lovely and bright. Cloud in Somerset but staying dry

:08:04.:08:12.

food as afternoon, 6-7. The breeze picks up a bit as well. -- this

:08:13.:08:18.

afternoon. Rain across Exmoor and Dartmoor. Hill fog here and there. A

:08:19.:08:23.

touch of frost for tonight. These are typical low temperatures. Not as

:08:24.:08:28.

cold as the night just gone. Wednesday morning, cloudy note, a

:08:29.:08:34.

bit of rain here and there. Largely dry. A few bright spells but they

:08:35.:08:38.

will be in short supply tomorrow. The best chance across Somerset and

:08:39.:08:44.

Dorset later on in the afternoon. Temperatures a shade higher. When

:08:45.:08:47.

you factor in the cloud, it probably won't feel that much milder. For the

:08:48.:08:52.

Channel Islands, a cloudy picture for tomorrow. A little bit of rain

:08:53.:08:57.

in the next, not too much. A breezy day than today, as well, and it's

:08:58.:09:00.

not the most inspiring look to things over the next few days.

:09:01.:09:04.

Mostly dry with rain moving in on Friday afternoon but hopefully

:09:05.:09:07.

turning dryer once again as a move into the weekend. Thank you very

:09:08.:09:09.

much. I'll be back with Victoria Graham

:09:10.:09:11.

in Spotlight tonight at 6.30. But from the lunchtime news,

:09:12.:09:14.

have a very good afternoon. Panorama investigates

:09:15.:09:17.

the deadly terrorist attack and should British tourists

:09:18.:09:50.

have been warned about the risks?

:09:51.:09:54.
