Thanks for tuning in to our latest thoughts on the weather prospects | 0:00:03 | 0:00:06
for the rest of the week, the weekend and beyond, | 0:00:06 | 0:00:08
and there's something quite interesting in terms of the weather | 0:00:08 | 0:00:11
heading our way for the second half of the weekend, | 0:00:11 | 0:00:13
something that has a tropical origin. | 0:00:13 | 0:00:16
We'll get to that in a moment, but first of all, the here and now, | 0:00:16 | 0:00:20
and the weather's relatively quiet across the UK for the moment. | 0:00:20 | 0:00:23
This is Tuesday. You'll notice quite a bit of sunshine | 0:00:23 | 0:00:25
to start the day across many Eastern areas of the country. | 0:00:25 | 0:00:28
But if you live further West, from Cornwall, Devon, Gloucestershire, | 0:00:28 | 0:00:31
into Wales, around the Irish Sea, | 0:00:31 | 0:00:33
Northern Ireland and Southwestern Scotland in particular, | 0:00:33 | 0:00:36
here it does look as though you may need your umbrella at some point. | 0:00:36 | 0:00:39
Could even be a downpour. But it will be still quite warm, | 0:00:39 | 0:00:42
25 in London, and even in Newcastle itself a pleasant 21 Celsius. | 0:00:42 | 0:00:45
Now, Wednesday is going to be a very different day. | 0:00:45 | 0:00:48
In fact, this big area of low pressure across the North Atlantic | 0:00:48 | 0:00:52
is made up of smaller areas of low pressure, | 0:00:52 | 0:00:55
and one of these is going to be sitting right on top of the UK | 0:00:55 | 0:00:58
on Wednesday, and that effectively means lots of cloud and some rain. | 0:00:58 | 0:01:01
You'll notice it's quite a big band of rain. | 0:01:01 | 0:01:04
The rain is going to clear away eventually | 0:01:04 | 0:01:07
from Wales and the South of England, | 0:01:07 | 0:01:09
so by the time we get to the afternoon, the weather will improve. | 0:01:09 | 0:01:12
There will be some sunshine, | 0:01:12 | 0:01:13
but there could be some hefty showers here and there from time to time. | 0:01:13 | 0:01:17
If you live in Eastern Scotland and Northern Scotland, | 0:01:17 | 0:01:19
it may well rain right through the course of the afternoon. | 0:01:19 | 0:01:22
And then we say goodbye to one area of low pressure here. | 0:01:22 | 0:01:25
There's another one heading our way, | 0:01:25 | 0:01:26
but we're in-between these areas of low pressure, | 0:01:26 | 0:01:28
so that means a spell of much better weather on the way for Thursday. | 0:01:28 | 0:01:32
So I think Thursday we say goodbye to the rain. | 0:01:32 | 0:01:35
It moves out into the North Sea. | 0:01:35 | 0:01:37
We're left with some sunshine, light winds as well. | 0:01:37 | 0:01:40
It really should be a very pleasant day for most of us on Thursday, | 0:01:40 | 0:01:43
with temperatures into the mid-20s across the Southeast, | 0:01:43 | 0:01:46
in Scotland more like 18 degrees, | 0:01:46 | 0:01:47
so a really nice day to come on Thursday. | 0:01:47 | 0:01:49
And then, as we head into Friday, again it changes a little bit. | 0:01:49 | 0:01:52
We lose that window of fine weather, | 0:01:52 | 0:01:54
because this big area of low pressure is kind of driving the whole system | 0:01:54 | 0:01:57
and shunting these smaller "lowlets", if you like, in our direction. | 0:01:57 | 0:02:01
So as we head through Friday, there is a chance there will be some rain. | 0:02:01 | 0:02:05
Remember that we're looking at quite a distant time into the future, | 0:02:05 | 0:02:08
so the actual accuracy | 0:02:08 | 0:02:11
of where the spells of rain will occur on Friday is still uncertain. | 0:02:11 | 0:02:16
But there will be some rain around for sure towards the end of the week. | 0:02:16 | 0:02:19
And then of course beyond that, even more uncertainty for Saturday. | 0:02:19 | 0:02:23
This area of low pressure that drifts out from the South, from France, | 0:02:23 | 0:02:26
is potentially going to bring some quite heavy rain | 0:02:26 | 0:02:29
to some Eastern areas and quite gusty winds, as well. | 0:02:29 | 0:02:31
You can see a big contrast between the weather here and here. | 0:02:31 | 0:02:34
All it will take is for this area of low pressure to be a bit further West | 0:02:34 | 0:02:38
and it will upset the weather across Yorkshire and the South of England. | 0:02:38 | 0:02:41
So just bear in mind that there will be a lot of heavy rain | 0:02:41 | 0:02:43
and some gusty winds around through the course of the weekend. | 0:02:43 | 0:02:46
This is what's happening right now. Let me take you to the Tropics. | 0:02:46 | 0:02:49
There's Hispaniola, Puerto Rico here, Cuba, the Bahamas. | 0:02:49 | 0:02:52
This is Hurricane Bertha. | 0:02:52 | 0:02:55
It's between the Bahamas here and Bermuda here. | 0:02:55 | 0:02:59
It looks as though over the next few days it is actually going to weaken | 0:02:59 | 0:03:02
back down to a tropical storm. It'll only be a hurricane briefly. | 0:03:02 | 0:03:06
And then you can see the general drift of this storm | 0:03:06 | 0:03:08
is in the direction of Europe, and not just Europe but in our direction. | 0:03:08 | 0:03:12
So that means that indirectly... | 0:03:12 | 0:03:14
If you were watching John Hammond yesterday, | 0:03:14 | 0:03:16
he was explaining that indirectly that storm may affect us, | 0:03:16 | 0:03:18
so be prepared, in this period, certainly round Sunday, | 0:03:18 | 0:03:21
for some heavy rain, some gusty winds. | 0:03:21 | 0:03:24
But it does look as though the weather is going to improve | 0:03:24 | 0:03:27
once we're out of that storm's way. | 0:03:27 | 0:03:29
Men of England, heirs of glory | 0:03:34 | 0:03:38
Heroes of unwritten story... | 0:03:38 | 0:03:40
Bert Middleton. Yes. | 0:03:40 | 0:03:42
Do you trust him? Yes. | 0:03:42 | 0:03:43
Then I should. No. | 0:03:43 | 0:03:45
Cos the more he can't have you, the more he'll want you. | 0:03:45 | 0:03:48
..Rise like lions after slumber | 0:03:48 | 0:03:51
In unvanquishable number... | 0:03:51 | 0:03:53 |
