Thanks for tuning in to our latest thoughts on the weather prospects

0:00:030:00:06

for the rest of the week, the weekend and beyond,

0:00:060:00:08

and there's something quite interesting in terms of the weather

0:00:080:00:11

heading our way for the second half of the weekend,

0:00:110:00:13

something that has a tropical origin.

0:00:130:00:16

We'll get to that in a moment, but first of all, the here and now,

0:00:160:00:20

and the weather's relatively quiet across the UK for the moment.

0:00:200:00:23

This is Tuesday. You'll notice quite a bit of sunshine

0:00:230:00:25

to start the day across many Eastern areas of the country.

0:00:250:00:28

But if you live further West, from Cornwall, Devon, Gloucestershire,

0:00:280:00:31

into Wales, around the Irish Sea,

0:00:310:00:33

Northern Ireland and Southwestern Scotland in particular,

0:00:330:00:36

here it does look as though you may need your umbrella at some point.

0:00:360:00:39

Could even be a downpour. But it will be still quite warm,

0:00:390:00:42

25 in London, and even in Newcastle itself a pleasant 21 Celsius.

0:00:420:00:45

Now, Wednesday is going to be a very different day.

0:00:450:00:48

In fact, this big area of low pressure across the North Atlantic

0:00:480:00:52

is made up of smaller areas of low pressure,

0:00:520:00:55

and one of these is going to be sitting right on top of the UK

0:00:550:00:58

on Wednesday, and that effectively means lots of cloud and some rain.

0:00:580:01:01

You'll notice it's quite a big band of rain.

0:01:010:01:04

The rain is going to clear away eventually

0:01:040:01:07

from Wales and the South of England,

0:01:070:01:09

so by the time we get to the afternoon, the weather will improve.

0:01:090:01:12

There will be some sunshine,

0:01:120:01:13

but there could be some hefty showers here and there from time to time.

0:01:130:01:17

If you live in Eastern Scotland and Northern Scotland,

0:01:170:01:19

it may well rain right through the course of the afternoon.

0:01:190:01:22

And then we say goodbye to one area of low pressure here.

0:01:220:01:25

There's another one heading our way,

0:01:250:01:26

but we're in-between these areas of low pressure,

0:01:260:01:28

so that means a spell of much better weather on the way for Thursday.

0:01:280:01:32

So I think Thursday we say goodbye to the rain.

0:01:320:01:35

It moves out into the North Sea.

0:01:350:01:37

We're left with some sunshine, light winds as well.

0:01:370:01:40

It really should be a very pleasant day for most of us on Thursday,

0:01:400:01:43

with temperatures into the mid-20s across the Southeast,

0:01:430:01:46

in Scotland more like 18 degrees,

0:01:460:01:47

so a really nice day to come on Thursday.

0:01:470:01:49

And then, as we head into Friday, again it changes a little bit.

0:01:490:01:52

We lose that window of fine weather,

0:01:520:01:54

because this big area of low pressure is kind of driving the whole system

0:01:540:01:57

and shunting these smaller "lowlets", if you like, in our direction.

0:01:570:02:01

So as we head through Friday, there is a chance there will be some rain.

0:02:010:02:05

Remember that we're looking at quite a distant time into the future,

0:02:050:02:08

so the actual accuracy

0:02:080:02:11

of where the spells of rain will occur on Friday is still uncertain.

0:02:110:02:16

But there will be some rain around for sure towards the end of the week.

0:02:160:02:19

And then of course beyond that, even more uncertainty for Saturday.

0:02:190:02:23

This area of low pressure that drifts out from the South, from France,

0:02:230:02:26

is potentially going to bring some quite heavy rain

0:02:260:02:29

to some Eastern areas and quite gusty winds, as well.

0:02:290:02:31

You can see a big contrast between the weather here and here.

0:02:310:02:34

All it will take is for this area of low pressure to be a bit further West

0:02:340:02:38

and it will upset the weather across Yorkshire and the South of England.

0:02:380:02:41

So just bear in mind that there will be a lot of heavy rain

0:02:410:02:43

and some gusty winds around through the course of the weekend.

0:02:430:02:46

This is what's happening right now. Let me take you to the Tropics.

0:02:460:02:49

There's Hispaniola, Puerto Rico here, Cuba, the Bahamas.

0:02:490:02:52

This is Hurricane Bertha.

0:02:520:02:55

It's between the Bahamas here and Bermuda here.

0:02:550:02:59

It looks as though over the next few days it is actually going to weaken

0:02:590:03:02

back down to a tropical storm. It'll only be a hurricane briefly.

0:03:020:03:06

And then you can see the general drift of this storm

0:03:060:03:08

is in the direction of Europe, and not just Europe but in our direction.

0:03:080:03:12

So that means that indirectly...

0:03:120:03:14

If you were watching John Hammond yesterday,

0:03:140:03:16

he was explaining that indirectly that storm may affect us,

0:03:160:03:18

so be prepared, in this period, certainly round Sunday,

0:03:180:03:21

for some heavy rain, some gusty winds.

0:03:210:03:24

But it does look as though the weather is going to improve

0:03:240:03:27

once we're out of that storm's way.

0:03:270:03:29

Men of England, heirs of glory

0:03:340:03:38

Heroes of unwritten story...

0:03:380:03:40

Bert Middleton. Yes.

0:03:400:03:42

Do you trust him? Yes.

0:03:420:03:43

Then I should. No.

0:03:430:03:45

Cos the more he can't have you, the more he'll want you.
