Hello, we've been hearing throughout the day just how dry

0:00:020:00:04

September has been.

0:00:040:00:06

If you haven't seen the statistics, they are available

0:00:060:00:08

on the BBC Weather website.

0:00:080:00:10

A change in month will bring a change in the weather,

0:00:100:00:13

but not immediately.

0:00:130:00:14

The first day of October, Wednesday, promises more dry

0:00:140:00:17

and bright weather for most of us.

0:00:170:00:19

Quite a lot of cloud across England and Wales,

0:00:190:00:20

we could start off with a bit of mist and fog,

0:00:200:00:23

and there will be some showery bands drifting their way Southwards.

0:00:230:00:26

Probably a great start across Scotland and Northern Ireland

0:00:260:00:29

but for most here, actually, it will be a fine afternoon

0:00:290:00:31

with plenty of sunshine, just one or two showers in the far Northwest.

0:00:310:00:34

Sunny skies developing across Northern Ireland.

0:00:340:00:37

A grey day for much of Northern England.

0:00:370:00:39

A little bit of light rain coming into the West

0:00:390:00:41

and we will see a few light showers for Wales too.

0:00:410:00:43

Some brightness across central and Eastern areas,

0:00:430:00:46

still a few showers across the far Southeast in the afternoon.

0:00:460:00:49

A bit of brightness could again see temperatures up to 20 Celsius.

0:00:490:00:51

Quite a lot more cloud compared to Tuesday across Southwest England.

0:00:510:00:55

And we'll keep a lot of cloud on Wednesday night in the South.

0:00:550:00:58

That will keep the temperatures up.

0:00:580:00:59

Further North, clear skies means it will turn quite cold.

0:00:590:01:03

Temperatures in towns and cities down to single figures.

0:01:030:01:05

Rural areas will be as low as two or three,

0:01:050:01:08

if not a touch lower in some spots.

0:01:080:01:10

In the South, as I said, the cloud will keep the temperatures up.

0:01:100:01:13

It could be quite a misty, murky start on Thursday.

0:01:130:01:15

Again, for most places, Thursday is a dry day.

0:01:150:01:17

Just the chance of a few showers across the South.

0:01:170:01:20

Further North, generally dry and bright with some sunshine.

0:01:200:01:23

Temperatures ranging from the mid-teens to again, possibly,

0:01:230:01:26

in the South, getting up to 20 Celsius.

0:01:260:01:28

We are starting to see a change,

0:01:280:01:30

though - in the far Northwest the clouds are gathering.

0:01:300:01:33

This is an active weather front and it will be changing

0:01:330:01:36

the weather patterns as we go through the end of the week.

0:01:360:01:39

The isobars squeezing together, that is the first clue

0:01:390:01:41

that it's going to get blustery. And that weather front is quite active.

0:01:410:01:44

It's going to provide some heavy rain as it crosses Scotland,

0:01:440:01:47

Northern Ireland, late in the day on Friday to parts of Northern England.

0:01:470:01:51

Most of England and Wales having another dry day and despite

0:01:510:01:54

the breeze picking up, it will be quite warm at 20 or 21 Celsius.

0:01:540:01:57

But that weather front doesn't stop,

0:01:570:01:58

it continues to drive its way across all areas.

0:01:580:02:01

Some bright colours there suggesting some heavy rain and it's a cold

0:02:010:02:05

front, suggesting the area behind it is going to be quite a lot colder.

0:02:050:02:09

And see how the map changes colour.

0:02:090:02:11

We drain those blues across all areas for the weekend.

0:02:110:02:14

So turning much chillier. The rain still across East Anglia

0:02:140:02:17

and the Southeast for Saturday morning, slow to clear.

0:02:170:02:19

A few showers follow but, actually, quite a bit of sunshine will

0:02:190:02:22

follow on Saturday too, but look at the temperatures.

0:02:220:02:24

We're back in the mid-teens for most of us. It will feel a lot colder.

0:02:240:02:29

The breeze still in evidence on Sunday.

0:02:290:02:31

A lot of isobars on the chart.

0:02:310:02:32

Low pressure dominating the scene, the weather front piling

0:02:320:02:35

Southwards will provide pretty frequent showers across most areas.

0:02:350:02:38

That brisk breeze, again, making it feel quite chilly,

0:02:380:02:42

despite those temperatures being about around average.

0:02:420:02:44

Because it's been so warm and because of the breezes,

0:02:440:02:47

it will feel quite a lot colder.

0:02:470:02:49

Colder than what was a very mild September. Why was it so dry?

0:02:490:02:52

Well, the jet stream was to the north of the UK.

0:02:520:02:55

It's the jet stream,

0:02:550:02:56

that fast moving ribbon of air, high up in the atmosphere, that drives

0:02:560:02:59

the low pressure systems North,

0:02:590:03:01

allowing most of us to enjoy scenes like this.

0:03:010:03:03

Misty mornings and plenty of sunshine.

0:03:030:03:06

The change next week will be that the jet stream is much further South,

0:03:060:03:09

driving the low pressure systems across the UK which means,

0:03:090:03:13

yes, most of us will see spells of rain and some strong winds too.

0:03:130:03:17

As I mentioned, temperatures will be back close to the average

0:03:170:03:20

but it will feel a lot colder because of the wind.

0:03:200:03:22

There will be some sunny spells

0:03:220:03:24

but finally, most of us will get some rain as well.

0:03:240:03:28

Goodbye.
