Storm Desmond, the fourth named storm here in the UK and Ireland,

0:00:020:00:06

unleashed severe weather through the first part of the weekend

0:00:060:00:09

with damaging winds and exceptionally heavy rainfall.

0:00:090:00:12

Sunday was a bit of a quieter day.

0:00:120:00:14

But Storm Desmond left scenes a bit like this one

0:00:140:00:17

taken by one of our weather watchers in Whitesands in Dumfries.

0:00:170:00:19

You can see the extent of the flooding there.

0:00:190:00:22

Severe flooding is still a problem

0:00:220:00:24

across many parts of northern England.

0:00:240:00:26

Flood warnings also issued across southern Scotland.

0:00:260:00:29

0345 988 1188 is the Floodline number

0:00:290:00:33

if you're concerned about your region.

0:00:330:00:35

During the course of Monday, it is a bit of a quieter day.

0:00:350:00:37

Some more rain on the cards.

0:00:370:00:39

We've got a warm front bringing some spells of rain

0:00:390:00:41

across some northern areas during the early part of the morning.

0:00:410:00:44

Fairly light and patchy.

0:00:440:00:45

Much of the UK having a drier interlude with some sunny spells,

0:00:450:00:48

and still very mild, with temperatures 13 or 14 Celsius,

0:00:480:00:51

even a bit higher than that in one or two spots.

0:00:510:00:53

But during Monday afternoon, we've got more rain to come.

0:00:530:00:56

The severe flooding problems aren't going to abate in a hurry.

0:00:560:00:59

We could well see severe disruption to transport and travel for Monday

0:00:590:01:03

across parts of northern England and southern Scotland.

0:01:030:01:06

And later in the day, our attention turns to the west once again.

0:01:060:01:09

This reasonably active front moving its way west to east,

0:01:090:01:11

delivering 20mm to 40mm of rain across the flood-affected regions.

0:01:110:01:15

Not a huge amount, but it's falling on very saturated ground,

0:01:150:01:18

high river levels and very sensitive catchments.

0:01:180:01:21

This rain, during the course of Tuesday,

0:01:210:01:23

will start to ease away towards the east.

0:01:230:01:25

Still some fairly tight isobars around,

0:01:250:01:28

so we're left with another blustery sort of day.

0:01:280:01:30

Some slightly colder air following on behind that main band of rain.

0:01:300:01:33

Through the day on Tuesday,

0:01:330:01:34

some wet weather clearing away towards the east,

0:01:340:01:37

and then a return to fresher, brighter conditions.

0:01:370:01:39

Still some scattered showers, as you can see, blown in from the west.

0:01:390:01:42

Some of those showers will be a little bit wintry

0:01:420:01:44

on top of the hills of Scotland.

0:01:440:01:46

Still fairly mild in general, 10 to 14 Celsius,

0:01:460:01:48

but there will be a dip in the temperatures later on in the day

0:01:480:01:52

following on from the north-west.

0:01:520:01:53

Then as we look towards the middle part of the week,

0:01:530:01:55

high pressure not far away,

0:01:550:01:57

particularly from southern parts of the country.

0:01:570:01:59

But much of the country dominated by tight isobars,

0:01:590:02:02

further areas of low pressure,

0:02:020:02:03

and during Wednesday, we could see some further heavy rainfall

0:02:030:02:06

across parts of Northern Ireland, Scotland

0:02:060:02:09

and the north-west of England.

0:02:090:02:10

Further south and east, a much drier story.

0:02:100:02:13

But it's, again, falling on areas that have seen heavy rain

0:02:130:02:16

and the flooding through the course of the weekend.

0:02:160:02:18

As that front makes it way southwards during the course of Thursday,

0:02:180:02:21

we could have seen another 60mm to 80mm of rain

0:02:210:02:25

falling across parts of northern England and southern Scotland.

0:02:250:02:28

This front, as it slips further south,

0:02:280:02:30

will start to fizzle out somewhat

0:02:300:02:32

and it marks the boundary between mild air in the south -

0:02:320:02:34

11 or 12 degrees - with slightly colder and fresher conditions

0:02:340:02:37

piling in from the north-west,

0:02:370:02:39

again, with some wintry showers on the hills of Scotland.

0:02:390:02:42

Then as we look towards the end of the week, on into Friday,

0:02:420:02:44

a ridge of higher pressure here for a time.

0:02:440:02:46

So, some slightly quieter weather conditions,

0:02:460:02:48

but low pressure lurking out in the Atlantic once again.

0:02:480:02:51

Temperatures by Friday a little bit cooler than they have been,

0:02:510:02:54

really, for much of the week.

0:02:540:02:56

Further rain heading into the north-west later on in the day.

0:02:560:02:59

Things become a little bit more uncertain

0:02:590:03:01

as we head towards next weekend and beyond.

0:03:010:03:03

But it looks at the moment like we're likely to start off the weekend

0:03:030:03:06

between areas of low pressure.

0:03:060:03:08

So, a fairly quiet start to the weekend, all in all.

0:03:080:03:11

But with low pressure likely to head towards the north-west of the UK,

0:03:110:03:14

we could see a return to something more unsettled.

0:03:140:03:16

So, looking toward the six- to ten-day period,

0:03:160:03:19

there will start to be some drier interludes.

0:03:190:03:21

Also, we'll return to near-normal temperatures.

0:03:210:03:24

But we're likely to see further rain arriving by the end of the period.
