Well, Christmas is on the way, but frankly it seems more like Easter

0:00:010:00:04

is on the way given the spring bulbs shooting up all over the countryside.

0:00:040:00:08

Nature is getting very confused indeed.

0:00:080:00:10

This picture taken in Egham in Surrey,

0:00:100:00:13

symptomatic of the very high temperatures,

0:00:130:00:16

mild weather, we've had so far through December.

0:00:160:00:18

It has been cold for a couple of days across some northern areas,

0:00:180:00:22

but even here warm air is wafting northwards

0:00:220:00:24

and it will get exceptionally mild later on this week at times.

0:00:240:00:27

The all-time record breaker, the warmest December day

0:00:270:00:30

on record - 18.3 Celsius in the Highlands way back in 1948.

0:00:300:00:36

We probably won't break that record,

0:00:360:00:38

but it won't be far off perhaps in some places.

0:00:380:00:40

Mind you, a chilly start in the Highlands first thing.

0:00:400:00:43

Temperatures getting above freezing, a thaw beginning to set in.

0:00:430:00:46

Certainly mild further south across the UK,

0:00:460:00:48

but very misty and murky, some fog over the high-level routes,

0:00:480:00:51

for example the M62, so watch out for that.

0:00:510:00:54

The odd spot of rain around, but at this stage, a lot of dry weather.

0:00:540:00:57

It won't stay that way because rain already

0:00:570:00:59

knocking on the door of Cornwall at eight o'clock in the morning.

0:00:590:01:03

And the rain will be spreading its way north-eastwards through the day.

0:01:030:01:07

So, most of us across England and Wales eventually will

0:01:070:01:10

expect to see three or four hours of steady rain.

0:01:100:01:13

That is of some concern given the state of the catchment

0:01:130:01:15

and the rain we have already had.

0:01:150:01:17

There are weather warnings in force across parts of northern England.

0:01:170:01:20

Getting into Northern Ireland later on in the day.

0:01:200:01:23

The far north of England,

0:01:230:01:24

and Scotland dry and that thaw setting in.

0:01:240:01:26

Not as cold as it has been. Positively mild further south.

0:01:260:01:29

Wet weather continues to march northwards overnight

0:01:290:01:32

followed by another batch of showery rain on a very gusty wind.

0:01:320:01:35

So quite a lot going on as we go through the night.

0:01:350:01:37

By the early hours, though,

0:01:370:01:39

that rain and the worst of the wind will be easing away

0:01:390:01:41

So, for Wednesday, just dribs and drabs left behind,

0:01:410:01:44

a lot of cloud,

0:01:440:01:45

limited brightness but mild nationwide.

0:01:450:01:48

Double figures, mid teens across the south.

0:01:480:01:51

Now, as we look from Wednesday into Thursday another set of

0:01:510:01:54

weather fronts comes marching in,

0:01:540:01:56

get hooked up across some north-western parts of the UK again.

0:01:560:01:58

We're keeping a close eye on rainfall amounts here.

0:01:580:02:01

We could see 30 or 40 millimetres in some prone areas.

0:02:010:02:04

To the south and east of that, though,

0:02:040:02:06

despite a gusty wind, it will turn exceptionally mild.

0:02:060:02:09

16 possibly 17 degrees in some places

0:02:090:02:13

before that front sweeps through introducing cooler air,

0:02:130:02:16

not cold by any stretch of the imagination.

0:02:160:02:18

Temperatures just a degree or so down on Friday.

0:02:180:02:21

A lot of dry weather before the next set of weather fronts comes in

0:02:210:02:23

across the north and west.

0:02:230:02:25

So that is the picture on Friday, wettest across the north

0:02:250:02:28

and west, driest further south and east

0:02:280:02:30

and again double figures in most places temperature-wise.

0:02:300:02:34

Onto Saturday, southerly winds introduce even milder air.

0:02:340:02:38

Again some places could be getting up into the mid

0:02:380:02:40

high teens, but more wet weather across the north-west.

0:02:400:02:44

So a lot of warmth around as we start next week.

0:02:440:02:47

What we are going to get out in the Atlantic is a very tight

0:02:470:02:50

gradient of contrast between warm air to the south

0:02:500:02:53

and cold air to the north

0:02:530:02:54

and when you get a tight temperature

0:02:540:02:57

gradient like this, you get a strong jet stream.

0:02:570:03:00

Of course, the jet stream is the powerhouse of weather.

0:03:000:03:03

Along the jet stream, you get areas of low pressure zipping along.

0:03:030:03:07

The stronger the jet stream, the more intense the areas of low pressure.

0:03:070:03:10

And with this strong jet next week, we are

0:03:100:03:12

going to see some deep areas of low pressure.

0:03:120:03:15

Some very wet and windy weather

0:03:150:03:16

and potentially stormy,

0:03:160:03:18

and impacts are possible.

0:03:180:03:20

Obviously, we are keeping a very close eye on things.

0:03:200:03:23

Any colder interludes will be brief.

0:03:230:03:26

I'll be back with an update tomorrow.
