In the last 24 hours or so we've seen quite a bit of snow.

0:00:020:00:04

In fact, that snow has covered many parts of the UK

0:00:040:00:07

all the way from parts of Scotland down into southern England.

0:00:070:00:10

A bit more wintry weather overnight.

0:00:100:00:12

Northern England into Scotland, some sleet and snow showers,

0:00:120:00:15

maybe some more persistent snow in Scotland

0:00:150:00:17

and a risk of ice to take us on into the morning.

0:00:170:00:19

Into the afternoon we've still got that band of rain, sleet and snow

0:00:190:00:22

across central parts of Scotland but the far

0:00:220:00:24

north of Scotland should avoid it and see some winter sunshine.

0:00:240:00:27

But a pretty grey look to things further south

0:00:270:00:29

and there is that snow to contend with as well.

0:00:290:00:32

Northern England is largely dry but cold and grey

0:00:320:00:34

and after a grey start for East Anglia

0:00:340:00:36

and the south-east we should see some sunshine coming through.

0:00:360:00:39

But it won't do much for those temperatures -

0:00:390:00:41

it's still cold into the afternoon at three or four degrees.

0:00:410:00:43

Further west, a bit more cloud, outbreaks of rain.

0:00:430:00:45

A bit of a breeze as well.

0:00:450:00:47

Might see temperatures up to about six or seven degrees,

0:00:470:00:49

so I suppose it's relatively mild.

0:00:490:00:51

Five degrees in Cardiff with some outbreaks of rain.

0:00:510:00:54

On the cold side here,

0:00:540:00:55

maybe even a little bit of snow over higher ground.

0:00:550:00:57

In Northern Ireland, though, we're at six or seven degrees

0:00:570:01:00

and a lot of cloud into the afternoon.

0:01:000:01:02

A little bit of rain but that tends to fade away.

0:01:020:01:05

Meanwhile in Scotland,

0:01:050:01:06

through the evening we've still got that area of rain, sleet and snow.

0:01:060:01:09

Little bit of rain towards the south and west of the UK.

0:01:090:01:11

Elsewhere, though, it's a clear night, particularly for central

0:01:110:01:14

and eastern areas, and it will be a cold one as well -

0:01:140:01:17

a widespread frost, -2, -3 in Norwich and in London.

0:01:170:01:21

So, a cold start to the day on Tuesday

0:01:210:01:23

and two main features to watch out for.

0:01:230:01:24

This one in the south-west will bring some outbreaks of rain with it

0:01:240:01:27

and this feature to the north-east is likely to bring

0:01:270:01:30

a mixture of rain, sleet and some snow.

0:01:300:01:32

That will be drifting south through Scotland into the far

0:01:320:01:35

north-east of England.

0:01:350:01:36

Elsewhere, after a cold start, should be a good deal of sunshine,

0:01:360:01:39

crisp, winter sunshine. Still maybe a bit more cloud

0:01:390:01:42

and a bit of rain towards the far south and west.

0:01:420:01:44

Six or seven again in Plymouth and in Belfast

0:01:440:01:47

but most places another cold day -

0:01:470:01:49

three or four degrees by the middle of the afternoon.

0:01:490:01:51

And then, by the middle of the week, it looks like we're going

0:01:510:01:54

to see this area of high pressure drifting down from the north.

0:01:540:01:57

That is not without its problems

0:01:570:01:58

because with light winds across some central and eastern areas,

0:01:580:02:01

we are likely to see some fog patches forming and that may well be

0:02:010:02:04

freezing fog and that may well linger into the afternoon.

0:02:040:02:07

The further west you are a bit more of a breeze, so less of a risk

0:02:070:02:10

of the fog and a better chance of seeing at least some sunshine.

0:02:100:02:13

Another cold day for most places, though - three,

0:02:130:02:15

four degrees fairly typical.

0:02:150:02:17

We start to see a bit of a change, though, by Thursday.

0:02:170:02:19

Weather fronts trying to push in against that area of high

0:02:190:02:22

pressure and I think the breeze will be picking up as well,

0:02:220:02:24

so a windier day and a wetter day out towards the western side of the UK.

0:02:240:02:27

Might see some wintry weather on the leading edge of this weather

0:02:270:02:30

system and temperatures about four, five degrees, so still cold for many.

0:02:300:02:35

But signs of things turning a little bit milder in the western side

0:02:350:02:38

of the UK and it looks like that mild air will be following behind

0:02:380:02:41

this wind and rain, which will be affecting all parts of the UK

0:02:410:02:44

through Thursday night and on into Friday.

0:02:440:02:46

That rain could be heavy at times but it'll clear away,

0:02:460:02:49

it'll brighten up, sunshine

0:02:490:02:51

and showers through Friday afternoon and temperatures into double

0:02:510:02:54

figures for Cardiff, London, Belfast and Glasgow.

0:02:540:02:57

So, on into next weekend and beyond. A much more unsettled look to things.

0:02:570:03:01

There'll be some rain at times,

0:03:010:03:02

the breeze will be quite strong for some and notably those

0:03:020:03:06

temperatures rising back to something much nearer the norm.

0:03:060:03:09

So, why the change?

0:03:090:03:10

Well, the main reason is this area of high pressure that's drifting

0:03:100:03:13

back into the near continent

0:03:130:03:15

and that's allowing areas of low pressure to come our way.

0:03:150:03:18

And with that comes a south-westerly breeze.

0:03:180:03:20

That'll be dragging in a lot of cloud and outbreaks of rain,

0:03:200:03:23

hence the more unsettled look to things,

0:03:230:03:25

but it's also going to be a south-westerly breeze

0:03:250:03:27

and that's going to bring that milder air with it.
