Hello. Before I look ahead, it's worth remembering that a week | 0:00:03 | 0:00:05
or so back we had some really cold, | 0:00:05 | 0:00:07
wintry weather with hard frosts and some snow around. | 0:00:07 | 0:00:09
Seems a distant memory now, doesn't it? | 0:00:09 | 0:00:11
And the prospects through the rest of this week are for further | 0:00:11 | 0:00:14
quite wet and windy weather at times. | 0:00:14 | 0:00:16
I'll show you a satellite sequence for the entirety of the last week, | 0:00:16 | 0:00:20
and it just goes to reinforce the fact that it's been | 0:00:20 | 0:00:23
so disturbed, with bands of wet and windy weather | 0:00:23 | 0:00:26
charging in off the Atlantic on a very strong jet stream. | 0:00:26 | 0:00:30
And with plenty more of this stuff to come through the rest of this | 0:00:30 | 0:00:33
week, concerns about flooding will be high, | 0:00:33 | 0:00:35
and we'll keep a very close eye on things through the rest | 0:00:35 | 0:00:38
of this week in conjunction, of course, with the Environment Agency. | 0:00:38 | 0:00:41
Certainly a pretty wet scene across southern areas | 0:00:41 | 0:00:43
on Wednesday, some bouts of quite heavy rain, some strong winds, too, | 0:00:43 | 0:00:46
which could cause some problems. | 0:00:46 | 0:00:48
Further north, in contrast, it'll tend to dry out, | 0:00:48 | 0:00:50
lighter winds, so there will be wintry showers | 0:00:50 | 0:00:52
feeding into the Highlands of Scotland. | 0:00:52 | 0:00:54
Quite a contrast in temperatures, | 0:00:54 | 0:00:56
11 to 13 degrees across the south despite the wind and the rain. | 0:00:56 | 0:01:00
Despite the sunshine further north, it'll be a lot colder, | 0:01:00 | 0:01:02
five or six degrees typical through the afternoon | 0:01:02 | 0:01:05
for Scotland and Northern Ireland. | 0:01:05 | 0:01:07
As we head into the evening and night, so these fronts clear away. | 0:01:07 | 0:01:09
They take the rain with them. | 0:01:09 | 0:01:11
Behind that, a ridge of high pressure, clear skies for many. | 0:01:11 | 0:01:14
In fact, by Thursday morning this could be the scene quite | 0:01:14 | 0:01:17
widely up and down the UK, a frosty start to a bright | 0:01:17 | 0:01:21
and crisp morning, actually, for many of us, probably one of the best | 0:01:21 | 0:01:24
days of the week, in fact, certainly for England and Wales. | 0:01:24 | 0:01:27
Lighter winds, plenty of sunshine. | 0:01:27 | 0:01:28
Already, though, signs of change to the north-west, | 0:01:28 | 0:01:31
with the next weather system powering in, bringing wind | 0:01:31 | 0:01:33
and rain again to Northern Ireland and Scotland. A chilly-feeling day. | 0:01:33 | 0:01:37
We might just scrape ten degrees in London, | 0:01:37 | 0:01:39
but more typically around about six to eight degrees. | 0:01:39 | 0:01:42
So, looking further ahead, then, | 0:01:42 | 0:01:43
Thursday night into Friday, it's business as usual, | 0:01:43 | 0:01:46
with further active frontal systems coming off the Atlantic, | 0:01:46 | 0:01:49
strong winds and some pretty heavy rain, | 0:01:49 | 0:01:51
and for the likes of Snowdonia, the Cumbrian fells, | 0:01:51 | 0:01:54
the Southern Uplands quite a lot of rain expected. | 0:01:54 | 0:01:56
There are already warnings in force from the Met Office, | 0:01:56 | 0:01:59
with the risk of flooding for sure. | 0:01:59 | 0:02:02
Eventually drying up to the north-west, | 0:02:02 | 0:02:04
and the rain taking all day to reach the more southern areas. | 0:02:04 | 0:02:07
But as we look from Friday into Saturday, the rain will arrive here. | 0:02:07 | 0:02:10
Behind that, though, it turns clearer | 0:02:10 | 0:02:13
and colder again on Saturday, quite a chilly wind | 0:02:13 | 0:02:16
developing across Scotland and Northern Ireland in particular. | 0:02:16 | 0:02:19
That wind will give some wintry showers. | 0:02:19 | 0:02:21
Quite a lot of snow over the Highlands of Scotland. | 0:02:21 | 0:02:23
Those weather fronts perhaps lingering | 0:02:23 | 0:02:25
across the far south-east well into the day. | 0:02:25 | 0:02:27
But it will be chillier-feeling for most places, | 0:02:27 | 0:02:29
particularly in the north. | 0:02:29 | 0:02:31
Into Sunday, perhaps a frosty start, and then guess what? | 0:02:31 | 0:02:33
The next set of fronts comes in from the west, | 0:02:33 | 0:02:36
providing a pretty wet and windy end to the weekend across western | 0:02:36 | 0:02:39
areas, that rain eventually spreading its way further eastwards | 0:02:39 | 0:02:42
but introducing higher temperatures. | 0:02:42 | 0:02:45
And the temperatures flip-flopping all the way through the week | 0:02:45 | 0:02:48
and, indeed, beyond. | 0:02:48 | 0:02:49
We get bouts of warmer air followed by bouts of chillier air, | 0:02:49 | 0:02:52
and then the next system comes in and it's warm and cold again. | 0:02:52 | 0:02:56
But with westerly winds, that cold air is never particularly cold. | 0:02:56 | 0:03:00
As I mentioned yesterday, | 0:03:00 | 0:03:01
it's modified by the relatively warm Atlantic. | 0:03:01 | 0:03:03
And with a very strong jet stream driving those weather systems, | 0:03:03 | 0:03:07
expect more of the same for the next week and, indeed, perhaps beyond. | 0:03:07 | 0:03:11
So, looking into February, plenty more wind and rain, for sure, | 0:03:11 | 0:03:14
with those westerly winds dominant. | 0:03:14 | 0:03:16
It could well be, as we head towards the middle of the month, | 0:03:16 | 0:03:19
that changes around the globe, including, would you believe, | 0:03:19 | 0:03:22
changes in the stratosphere, may change | 0:03:22 | 0:03:24
the behaviour of the jet stream, and it might start to turn colder. | 0:03:24 | 0:03:29
Louise Lear will update you again tomorrow. | 0:03:29 | 0:03:30 |
