Hello. Thanks for tuning in.

0:00:030:00:05

Quite a bit happening on the weather front over the next few days

0:00:050:00:08

and also a fair bit of uncertainty for the start of next week.

0:00:080:00:10

In the short term, we're fairly confident

0:00:100:00:13

this weekend is just going to be pretty cloudy for most of us,

0:00:130:00:15

quite windy, too, and there's some rain in the forecast as well.

0:00:150:00:19

Now, this is the big view across the Atlantic.

0:00:190:00:21

There's a big ribbon of cloud stretching across the ocean here

0:00:210:00:25

and for us it means a pretty overcast weekend

0:00:250:00:28

with bits and pieces of rain.

0:00:280:00:30

Now, there's a weather front draped across the Atlantic,

0:00:300:00:32

looks a bit like bunting stretching from the UK

0:00:320:00:34

right across the North Atlantic to just south of Newfoundland here.

0:00:340:00:38

And this weather front separates two air masses.

0:00:380:00:40

We've got the colder air mass to the north,

0:00:400:00:42

coming all the way from Iceland and Greenland,

0:00:420:00:45

and we've got the slightly milder air - quite a bit milder, in fact -

0:00:450:00:48

coming all the way from the Azores.

0:00:480:00:50

And the UK is going to be on that border

0:00:500:00:52

between the cold and the mild air, and it means what it means.

0:00:520:00:56

So that means that across Scotland and Northern England

0:00:560:00:59

we'll have chilly conditions, there'll be some snow showers,

0:00:590:01:01

whereas in the south, significantly milder,

0:01:010:01:04

and on top of that you can see a lot of cloud

0:01:040:01:06

and bits and pieces of rain. Most of this rain

0:01:060:01:09

is actually going to be relatively light and fleeting in the wind.

0:01:090:01:12

The rain will be particularly heavy I think across the hills of Wales

0:01:120:01:16

and perhaps the north-west of England,

0:01:160:01:18

so this area here actually, through the course of Saturday and Sunday,

0:01:180:01:21

could even get a bit of local flooding.

0:01:210:01:23

The rain won't be heavy all the time,

0:01:230:01:25

it'll just keep falling in the same place,

0:01:250:01:27

because this weather pattern actually isn't shifting much.

0:01:270:01:30

It keeps coming in from the west,

0:01:300:01:31

and if you remember that imaginary line here -

0:01:310:01:33

the cold to the north, the mild to the south -

0:01:330:01:36

and here's that weather front here.

0:01:360:01:38

So that rain keeps falling on the same place over and over again,

0:01:380:01:42

hence there's that chance of a bit of flooding.

0:01:420:01:44

To the south it's cloudy and drizzly, 14 degrees,

0:01:440:01:47

maybe a bit of brightness, if we're lucky. To the north,

0:01:470:01:50

we keep that colder air, with around 5 or 6 degrees.

0:01:500:01:52

Now, early next week, the winds are going to shift in direction

0:01:520:01:56

and we'll get a shot of colder air coming in from the north.

0:01:560:01:59

Colder and drier air. So what does that mean?

0:01:590:02:01

For most of us, it means that we'll certainly feel the chill,

0:02:010:02:04

particularly on the North Sea coast with those cold northerly winds,

0:02:040:02:07

and cold enough for some wintry showers,

0:02:070:02:10

particularly across the Scottish hills

0:02:100:02:12

but also as far south as the Pennines.

0:02:120:02:13

So here's Monday. The temperatures may not look particularly low,

0:02:130:02:16

but because it's dry air, quite a strong wind,

0:02:160:02:19

it is going to feel cold. Now, here comes the uncertainty.

0:02:190:02:22

By the time we get to Tuesday,

0:02:220:02:25

we're looking at an area of low pressure approaching the UK,

0:02:250:02:28

and this is going to be a player for midweek weather.

0:02:280:02:31

Now, it looks like the area of low pressure

0:02:310:02:33

is going to go to the south. When it goes to the south,

0:02:330:02:36

we'll get weather that we'll have a look at in just a second.

0:02:360:02:39

But if it goes to the north, we'll get different weather altogether.

0:02:390:02:43

Let's have a look at this more likely track,

0:02:430:02:45

so the low decides to go towards the south.

0:02:450:02:48

What that means is it opens up colder air from the north,

0:02:480:02:51

and there is a chance of some snow across parts of the Midlands.

0:02:510:02:55

Now, if this low were to go a little bit further north,

0:02:550:02:59

we probably won't see any snow, it'll be milder.

0:02:590:03:02

But this is the more likely scenario.

0:03:020:03:04

And then once that low pressure's out of the way,

0:03:040:03:06

it does look as though eventually that milder air

0:03:060:03:09

is going to once again win and come in off the Atlantic.

0:03:090:03:11

So we're going to go a little bit up and down the hill

0:03:110:03:13

for the start of next week.

0:03:130:03:15

Let's summarise all that, cos a lot's happening.

0:03:150:03:17

Here's Monday's weather - pretty chilly, maybe some snow showers.

0:03:170:03:20

Then that risk of snow midweek

0:03:200:03:21

depending on where that area of low pressure goes,

0:03:210:03:24

and then by Friday, it does look as though things are going to turn,

0:03:240:03:27

once again, a little bit milder. Thanks for watching.
