There's a bit of a complication

0:00:030:00:04

towards the end of this week and into the weekend,

0:00:040:00:06

but the main themes for the rest of February

0:00:060:00:08

and into the first part of March are cold.

0:00:080:00:10

In fact, it could potentially be

0:00:100:00:12

the longest spell of cold weather for quite some time.

0:00:120:00:14

Quite a bit of sunshine by day, widespread night-time frost

0:00:140:00:17

and, yes, some wintry showers.

0:00:170:00:19

Certainly snow showers across northern Scotland during Tuesday.

0:00:190:00:22

A bit of snow in the showers over the hills

0:00:220:00:24

across north-east England.

0:00:240:00:25

Mostly rain showers at lower levels through the day here.

0:00:250:00:28

A bit of cloud across parts of the south,

0:00:280:00:30

but overall, a much brighter day here compared to Monday,

0:00:300:00:33

and with some sunshine, we could get to 9 Celsius.

0:00:330:00:35

More typically 5 to 7 degrees,

0:00:350:00:37

feeling colder with a bit of wind across northern Scotland

0:00:370:00:39

that continues to blow

0:00:390:00:41

and continues to bring snow showers here on Tuesday evening.

0:00:410:00:44

So, potentially, it could be icy.

0:00:440:00:46

Look at the map changing colour. It's going blue widely.

0:00:460:00:49

Hard frost likely during Tuesday night and Wednesday morning,

0:00:490:00:52

temperatures widely below freezing.

0:00:520:00:54

Maybe as low as -10

0:00:540:00:56

where there's snow on the ground across northern Scotland.

0:00:560:00:59

And we'll keep snow showers here.

0:00:590:01:00

There'll be some wintriness,

0:01:000:01:02

some sleet and snow mixed in to the showers,

0:01:020:01:04

over north-west England, North Wales and Northern Ireland during the day.

0:01:040:01:07

But the showers will be scattered

0:01:070:01:08

and for many, it's another dry, bright day,

0:01:080:01:10

and after we start with that frost, we're up to 4 to 7 or 8 degrees.

0:01:100:01:14

Still a lot colder in northern Scotland.

0:01:140:01:16

Frosty start again on Thursday. It's a similar day -

0:01:160:01:18

dry and bright for many, sunny spells, a few showers.

0:01:180:01:21

And then the complication that I talked about earlier.

0:01:210:01:23

This band of blue, a band of rain, a weather front,

0:01:230:01:26

trying to push in.

0:01:260:01:27

There's always uncertainty after a cold spell

0:01:270:01:30

about when these weather fronts will push away the cold air.

0:01:300:01:33

And it's all to do with this area of low pressure,

0:01:330:01:36

where and by how much will that intensify.

0:01:360:01:39

With the cold air in place,

0:01:390:01:41

there is the likelihood of some snow as the wet weather arrives.

0:01:410:01:43

At the moment, Wales potentially seeing a little bit

0:01:430:01:46

during the course of Friday.

0:01:460:01:48

But we need to firm up on the details

0:01:480:01:50

because of the complications to do with that low pressure.

0:01:500:01:53

It is still with us as we go into the weekend.

0:01:530:01:56

Why the uncertainty?

0:01:560:01:57

Well, again, we have to look high up in the atmosphere at the jet stream.

0:01:570:02:01

We are used to the jet stream driving across the Atlantic

0:02:010:02:04

and across the UK from west to east.

0:02:040:02:06

But as we go into the weekend, it's in a slightly strange position.

0:02:060:02:10

The jet stream is driving south to the west of the UK.

0:02:100:02:14

That means it could pick up that low pressure over Ireland,

0:02:140:02:17

or it could develop it across the Bay of Biscay.

0:02:170:02:19

It's actually all tied in

0:02:190:02:21

with what's going on in the United States,

0:02:210:02:22

which is actually causing a bit of a ripple, if you like,

0:02:220:02:25

in the rope that is the jet stream, pushing it north

0:02:250:02:28

and then driving it southwards with some intensity, some vigour.

0:02:280:02:33

So, I say, uncertainty about where that low pressure develops,

0:02:330:02:36

but we end up through the weekend, into the earlier part of next week,

0:02:360:02:39

with low pressure sitting over Spain and Portugal.

0:02:390:02:42

Could be quite a wet weekend here.

0:02:420:02:44

For us, we're on the northern side of this area of low pressure,

0:02:440:02:47

which means the winds start coming in from the east,

0:02:470:02:50

something we have not seen much of so far this winter.

0:02:500:02:53

Easterly winds are never warm.

0:02:530:02:56

Cold winds look like dominating through the weekend

0:02:560:02:59

and into the earlier part of next week.

0:02:590:03:01

Generally quite dry when the wind's coming from the north-east,

0:03:010:03:04

but they always pick up some moisture over the North Sea,

0:03:040:03:06

which means eastern areas will be favoured

0:03:060:03:09

for seeing the showers from those winds.

0:03:090:03:12

Some sleet and snow potentially mixed in.

0:03:120:03:14

So, definitely as we head into March, it'll feel like winter,

0:03:140:03:17

with the cold winds, hard frost and some wintry showers,

0:03:170:03:22

particularly in the east.

0:03:220:03:24

As always, we'll be firming up on the details over the next few days.

0:03:240:03:27

Goodbye.
