Hello. Well, Wednesday was a cold day and you know what? | 0:00:03 | 0:00:05
The next few days aren't looking much warmer at all. | 0:00:05 | 0:00:09
If you were watching Louise yesterday, | 0:00:09 | 0:00:11
she was explaining just how chilly the beginning of March has been - | 0:00:11 | 0:00:14
1st March, the first day of meteorological winter. | 0:00:14 | 0:00:17
Look how the other three months - | 0:00:17 | 0:00:19
February, January, December, going back in time - | 0:00:19 | 0:00:22
how much milder it was. | 0:00:22 | 0:00:24
So, now that technically Spring - | 0:00:24 | 0:00:25
from a meteorologist's point of view - has just started, | 0:00:25 | 0:00:29
it's actually turned quite a bit colder. | 0:00:29 | 0:00:31
Very dramatic clouds recently as well. | 0:00:31 | 0:00:34
These mammatus clouds, for example, | 0:00:34 | 0:00:36
sent in by one of our weather watchers. | 0:00:36 | 0:00:38
Where has the air been coming from in the last couple of days or so? | 0:00:38 | 0:00:42
Well, you guessed it - all the way from the Arctic | 0:00:42 | 0:00:44
and we're going to keep getting shots of cold air | 0:00:44 | 0:00:46
through the course of the weekend. | 0:00:46 | 0:00:48
We are on the cold side of the jet stream. | 0:00:48 | 0:00:50
This is where the cold air sits, | 0:00:50 | 0:00:52
this is where the milder air sits. | 0:00:52 | 0:00:55
The good news is that at least on Thursday, | 0:00:55 | 0:00:57
we're going to be in between weather systems. | 0:00:57 | 0:01:00
One low-pressure here, another one there, | 0:01:00 | 0:01:02
we're in this in between bit, so that means | 0:01:02 | 0:01:04
that the weather isn't going to be that bad at all. | 0:01:04 | 0:01:07
Most importantly, the winds are going to be lighter, | 0:01:07 | 0:01:10
so it is going to feel just that little bit less cold. | 0:01:10 | 0:01:13
But there still are some showers in the forecast, | 0:01:13 | 0:01:16
possibly some wintry ones, during the course of Thursday - | 0:01:16 | 0:01:18
particularly across more northern areas of the country. | 0:01:18 | 0:01:21
Notice that there's another weather front | 0:01:21 | 0:01:23
that's out there in the Atlantic, ready to come our way. | 0:01:23 | 0:01:26
And that could prove troublesome as we go through Thursday night | 0:01:26 | 0:01:30
and also into Friday morning. | 0:01:30 | 0:01:32
We could see some snow. | 0:01:32 | 0:01:34
It's still cold enough for some snow, | 0:01:34 | 0:01:36
particularly across northern parts of England, | 0:01:36 | 0:01:38
through Wales, the Midlands, possibly East Anglia. | 0:01:38 | 0:01:41
So, if you're travelling first thing in the morning on Friday, | 0:01:41 | 0:01:44
just be prepared - there could be some disruption. | 0:01:44 | 0:01:47
Most of the snow will fall across the hills | 0:01:47 | 0:01:49
and for many of us, it will be rain and sleet, | 0:01:49 | 0:01:52
but through the day, | 0:01:52 | 0:01:53
it will be quite a cold and rotten picture | 0:01:53 | 0:01:57
for some of us across the southern half of the UK. | 0:01:57 | 0:02:00
Then comes Saturday. | 0:02:00 | 0:02:01
That area of low pressure with that weather front | 0:02:01 | 0:02:04
starts to pull away | 0:02:04 | 0:02:06
and we see isobars aligning themselves from North to South. | 0:02:06 | 0:02:09
That means the wind will be coming in from the North as well, | 0:02:09 | 0:02:12
but with that, further wintry showers anywhere from Scotland, | 0:02:12 | 0:02:15
eastern parts of England, possibly the Midlands, | 0:02:15 | 0:02:18
and down into the South. | 0:02:18 | 0:02:20
Only four, five, six degrees for some of us. | 0:02:20 | 0:02:22
The same picture happens on Sunday. | 0:02:22 | 0:02:24
Still those North to South-oriented isobars, | 0:02:24 | 0:02:27
so chilly winds, but they won't be quite so strong on Sunday | 0:02:27 | 0:02:30
and I think we'll see fewer wintry showers. | 0:02:30 | 0:02:32
This sort of situation, | 0:02:32 | 0:02:33
where we get the wintry showers coming in from the North - | 0:02:33 | 0:02:36
usually Western areas fare best and we get most of the sunshine. | 0:02:36 | 0:02:39
But look at these temperatures - four, five, six, | 0:02:39 | 0:02:42
seven degrees at most. | 0:02:42 | 0:02:43
Let's have a look at the jet stream. | 0:02:43 | 0:02:45
Remember, this is the warmer side of the jet stream, | 0:02:45 | 0:02:48
this is the colder side of the jet stream. | 0:02:48 | 0:02:50
You just get a sense that we're on that pivoting line, | 0:02:50 | 0:02:52
that point of transitioning | 0:02:52 | 0:02:54
to perhaps something slightly milder. | 0:02:54 | 0:02:57
This high pressure may be a player with our weather | 0:02:57 | 0:03:00
a little bit later on next week, | 0:03:00 | 0:03:02
at least the middle part of the week. | 0:03:02 | 0:03:04
High-pressure starts to build from the Atlantic, | 0:03:04 | 0:03:08
bringing us settled conditions, | 0:03:08 | 0:03:10
maybe frosty nights as well. | 0:03:10 | 0:03:12
It may not last long, | 0:03:12 | 0:03:13
cos from the latter part of next week, | 0:03:13 | 0:03:16
that low-pressure from the Atlantic starts to come in, | 0:03:16 | 0:03:20
bringing us stronger winds. | 0:03:20 | 0:03:22
Perhaps we'd like something a little bit warmer, | 0:03:22 | 0:03:24
but at the moment, | 0:03:24 | 0:03:26
it looks as though that cold weather is here to stay, | 0:03:26 | 0:03:28
so no change from yesterday. | 0:03:28 | 0:03:30
In the last five years, | 0:03:42 | 0:03:42 |
