Hello there, as we head towards the end of April, | 0:00:02 | 0:00:04
we're well and truly into spring now, but the weather can be | 0:00:04 | 0:00:07
a little bit of tease at this time of year - on the one hand it giveth, | 0:00:07 | 0:00:10
and that's exactly what happened on Thursday - | 0:00:10 | 0:00:12
warmest day of the year so far, 20 degrees in Porthmadog, | 0:00:12 | 0:00:15
68 Fahrenheit, but it can also taketh away. | 0:00:15 | 0:00:19
And just look at next week, it's going to feel noticeably cooler, | 0:00:19 | 0:00:23
yes, with even a dusting of snow to the tops of higher ground. | 0:00:23 | 0:00:26
For the here and now, though, | 0:00:26 | 0:00:28
we've got some contrasting weather conditions around as well. | 0:00:28 | 0:00:30
Sunshine across Scotland, northern England and Northern Ireland | 0:00:30 | 0:00:33
but a cooler feel here, and there'll be some outbreaks of rain. | 0:00:33 | 0:00:36
Fairly persistent across the south-west, | 0:00:36 | 0:00:38
light and patchy through southern England and the Midlands. | 0:00:38 | 0:00:42
But temperatures down on where they have been in recent days for some. | 0:00:42 | 0:00:46
And the reason being this colder air that's spilling in from | 0:00:46 | 0:00:49
the Arctic and that is going to descend further south | 0:00:49 | 0:00:53
as we move towards the weekend. A noticeable change in the story, | 0:00:53 | 0:00:56
not only for the weekend but also into next week. | 0:00:56 | 0:00:59
So, yes, it's going to feel colder - there will be some sunshine | 0:00:59 | 0:01:02
and showers, turning increasingly wintry | 0:01:02 | 0:01:04
and also at the same time, with clearer skies we could see | 0:01:04 | 0:01:07
widespread night-time frosts. So that weather front meanders its way | 0:01:07 | 0:01:11
slowly south, it will be slow to clear across Channel coasts | 0:01:11 | 0:01:14
and then a day of sunny spells. Most of the showers on Saturday | 0:01:14 | 0:01:18
across the North Sea coast where that brisk breeze will be | 0:01:18 | 0:01:21
making it feel much cooler. And to higher ground there will be | 0:01:21 | 0:01:24
some sleet and snow as well. But there'll also be some sunshine... | 0:01:24 | 0:01:27
But the difference will be the feel of the story - | 0:01:27 | 0:01:30
6 to 13 degrees at the very best. And as we move out of Saturday | 0:01:30 | 0:01:34
into Sunday, that's when we're likely to see the clearer skies | 0:01:34 | 0:01:38
and the frost descend across the country. | 0:01:38 | 0:01:41
So, it's going to be a chilly start to Sunday morning - | 0:01:41 | 0:01:44
lows could get down to minus 4 degrees. | 0:01:44 | 0:01:46
Certainly, gardeners take note and if you're taking part | 0:01:46 | 0:01:49
in the London Marathon, you might need a couple of extra bin bags | 0:01:49 | 0:01:52
for waiting on the starting line. | 0:01:52 | 0:01:54
And a very chilly start first thing on Sunday morning, | 0:01:54 | 0:01:57
with the risk of some showers. | 0:01:57 | 0:01:58
Now, turning increasingly wintry to lower levels in the north. | 0:01:58 | 0:02:02
Hail could be an issue in the south-east corner | 0:02:02 | 0:02:04
by the end of Sunday afternoon. As we move into Monday, again we've | 0:02:04 | 0:02:08
still got this cold, Arctic flow descending on us, | 0:02:08 | 0:02:11
with most of the showers across the north and east. | 0:02:11 | 0:02:14
There will be some snow falling now, even at lower levels, | 0:02:14 | 0:02:17
feeling quite cold here. But in a little more shelter into the west, | 0:02:17 | 0:02:20
perhaps not quite as bad. Now, the showers will be enhanced | 0:02:20 | 0:02:24
overnight into Tuesday by these troughs and that could | 0:02:24 | 0:02:27
leave some snow, some slushy deposits at lower levels | 0:02:27 | 0:02:30
first thing on Tuesday. But with a little bit of sunshine, | 0:02:30 | 0:02:33
it should help to thaw that quite rapidly away. | 0:02:33 | 0:02:36
But it's going to be a cold day. Again, the further west | 0:02:36 | 0:02:39
the best of the sunshine - highs 6 to 13 degrees. | 0:02:39 | 0:02:43
"What on earth is going on?" I hear you ask. | 0:02:43 | 0:02:46
Well, there's an area of low pressure | 0:02:46 | 0:02:50
and it's centred into the North Sea. Now, around that low, | 0:02:50 | 0:02:52
the winds swing in a anticlockwise direction - | 0:02:52 | 0:02:55
it's dragging in this colder, Arctic flow, but as we move out of | 0:02:55 | 0:02:59
April into the early stages of May, it looks as though this | 0:02:59 | 0:03:02
high pressure is set to build from the west. | 0:03:02 | 0:03:05
And around the high, the winds swing in a clockwise direction, | 0:03:05 | 0:03:08
turning back to a westerly. So, a milder direction. | 0:03:08 | 0:03:11
So, potentially we could be back to square one. | 0:03:11 | 0:03:14
It looks as though, by the early half of May there's the potential | 0:03:14 | 0:03:17
for something a little milder, a little drier, | 0:03:17 | 0:03:19
with fewer showers and certainly not wintry. | 0:03:19 | 0:03:22
And even, fingers crossed, back to some decent sunny spells. | 0:03:22 | 0:03:26
I'd like to end on a positive note, take care. | 0:03:26 | 0:03:28 |
