Hello there. Well, it was a cold weekend across the board. | 0:00:01 | 0:00:04
And it was a cold start to the new week. | 0:00:04 | 0:00:06
We've got this arctic air across pretty much all parts of the UK. | 0:00:06 | 0:00:10
However, the sun is still strong at this time of the year, | 0:00:10 | 0:00:12
and even if the air is cold, | 0:00:12 | 0:00:14
get out of the wind, and it feels pleasant enough. | 0:00:14 | 0:00:16
This is the view from one of our Weather Watchers | 0:00:16 | 0:00:18
in the Isles of Scilly on Monday. | 0:00:18 | 0:00:19
But in the Highlands, the daffodils struggling to stand upright | 0:00:19 | 0:00:22
because of the strength of the wind, | 0:00:22 | 0:00:24
and yes, there's some snow in that cold air as well. | 0:00:24 | 0:00:27
Now, we've got low pressure | 0:00:27 | 0:00:28
to the East side of the UK, | 0:00:28 | 0:00:29
high pressure to the West. | 0:00:29 | 0:00:30
The resultant airflow is from the North, | 0:00:30 | 0:00:33
and that air is coming | 0:00:33 | 0:00:34
all the way down from the Arctic, | 0:00:34 | 0:00:35
so yes, cold air firmly in place across the UK, | 0:00:35 | 0:00:38
hence the risk of those wintry showers. | 0:00:38 | 0:00:41
And we've got further wintry showers | 0:00:41 | 0:00:43
through the morning. | 0:00:43 | 0:00:44
The North-east of England, | 0:00:44 | 0:00:45
more particularly into Northern Scotland. | 0:00:45 | 0:00:48
Elsewhere, some spells of | 0:00:48 | 0:00:49
sunshine to start the day, | 0:00:49 | 0:00:50
but cloud amounts will increase, | 0:00:50 | 0:00:51
and we'll see a good scattering | 0:00:51 | 0:00:53
of showers developing. | 0:00:53 | 0:00:54
Showers through the afternoon | 0:00:54 | 0:00:55
could be heavy, | 0:00:55 | 0:00:56
with some hail and some thunder mixed in. | 0:00:56 | 0:00:58
Temperatures, on the face of it, 7-10 or 11 degrees, | 0:00:58 | 0:01:00
but what you have to factor in, | 0:01:00 | 0:01:02
the wind is going to feel | 0:01:02 | 0:01:03
like it's in single digits across the board, | 0:01:03 | 0:01:05
a particularly cold feel to things | 0:01:05 | 0:01:07
along that North Sea coast. | 0:01:07 | 0:01:09
The strong winds will gradually ease | 0:01:09 | 0:01:11
as the low drifts away towards the near continent. | 0:01:11 | 0:01:13
The isobars open up, | 0:01:13 | 0:01:14
but it will be cold to start Wednesday. | 0:01:14 | 0:01:16
We will see a frost roughly from the Midlands Northwards, | 0:01:16 | 0:01:18
but a good deal of bright weather | 0:01:18 | 0:01:20
early on Wednesday. | 0:01:20 | 0:01:21
Again, cloud amounts increase into the afternoon, | 0:01:21 | 0:01:23
and there will be a scattering of showers. | 0:01:23 | 0:01:25
Some good spells of sunshine to be had as well, | 0:01:25 | 0:01:27
and not quite as windy. | 0:01:27 | 0:01:29
Maybe not feeling quite so cold, | 0:01:29 | 0:01:30
but temperatures still in single figures | 0:01:30 | 0:01:32
for most parts of the UK. | 0:01:32 | 0:01:34
We might just about get into doubles in the centre of London. | 0:01:34 | 0:01:36
On Wednesday night, we have to watch out for this system, | 0:01:36 | 0:01:39
because it will move into some fairly cold air, | 0:01:39 | 0:01:41
and there's potential for snow | 0:01:41 | 0:01:42
on the leading edge of that system. | 0:01:42 | 0:01:44
As I say, that is one to watch out for | 0:01:44 | 0:01:46
on Thursday morning in particular. | 0:01:46 | 0:01:48
Thursday itself, there will be | 0:01:48 | 0:01:49
a scattering of showers, | 0:01:49 | 0:01:51
maybe some long spells of rain for a time | 0:01:51 | 0:01:52
in East Anglia and towards Lincolnshire, | 0:01:52 | 0:01:55
and a keen breeze blowing in along the South coast. | 0:01:55 | 0:01:57
And again, many places, | 0:01:57 | 0:01:58
we'll be seeing those temperatures | 0:01:58 | 0:02:00
in single figures through Thursday afternoon. | 0:02:00 | 0:02:02
On into Friday, | 0:02:02 | 0:02:03
and the winds are that bit lighter. | 0:02:03 | 0:02:05
We've still got some weather fronts | 0:02:05 | 0:02:07
not too far away from the UK, | 0:02:07 | 0:02:08
and this one in particular, | 0:02:08 | 0:02:09
towards the Southeastern corner, | 0:02:09 | 0:02:11
looks like it could bring a fair bit of cloud | 0:02:11 | 0:02:12
and outbreaks of rain towards the South-east of England, | 0:02:12 | 0:02:15
towards East Anglia, and maybe some outbreaks of rain | 0:02:15 | 0:02:17
elsewhere across the Southern UK. | 0:02:17 | 0:02:18
It looks like the best of | 0:02:18 | 0:02:20
the dry, brighter weather is probably | 0:02:20 | 0:02:21
in the North-west of Scotland, | 0:02:21 | 0:02:23
and the winds will be light here as well. | 0:02:23 | 0:02:24
But again, many places seeing temperatures in single figures. | 0:02:24 | 0:02:27
Might just about get into doubles | 0:02:27 | 0:02:28
for Cardiff, London, and for Plymouth. | 0:02:28 | 0:02:30
Then on into the start of the weekend, | 0:02:30 | 0:02:32
many central and Eastern areas will start off | 0:02:32 | 0:02:34
on a pretty reasonable note, | 0:02:34 | 0:02:35
but cloud and rain is gathering in the West. | 0:02:35 | 0:02:38
We are beginning to see a change by this stage, | 0:02:38 | 0:02:40
a change to more Westerly winds, | 0:02:40 | 0:02:42
and a return to the influence of the Atlantic, | 0:02:42 | 0:02:45
but this week, for most of the time, we've got this blocking pattern. | 0:02:45 | 0:02:48
An omega block. If you know your Greek alphabet, | 0:02:48 | 0:02:50
you'll recognise the shape. | 0:02:50 | 0:02:52
Low pressure to the East of the UK, high-pressure to the West, | 0:02:52 | 0:02:55
and the resultant airflow comes down from the North, | 0:02:55 | 0:02:57
so hence the cold feel this week, but as you get onto next week, | 0:02:57 | 0:03:01
the jet stream looks like it will be coming in from the West, | 0:03:01 | 0:03:04
bringing in much more changeable weather. | 0:03:04 | 0:03:06
High pressure to the South of the UK might just build in, | 0:03:06 | 0:03:09
keeping things relatively quiet, | 0:03:09 | 0:03:10
but low pressure to the Northwest | 0:03:10 | 0:03:12
looks like it will keep things fairly unsettled. | 0:03:12 | 0:03:14
So as we get on into early May, | 0:03:14 | 0:03:16
with those Westerly winds developing, | 0:03:16 | 0:03:18
certainly a lot less chilly than it has been, | 0:03:18 | 0:03:21
but still fairly unsettled, | 0:03:21 | 0:03:22
mainly in the North-west of the UK. | 0:03:22 | 0:03:24
There will be some sunshine to be had, | 0:03:24 | 0:03:26
and it looks as if most of the time, it will be driest in the South. | 0:03:26 | 0:03:29 |
