Hello. Fair to say most of us were glad to see the back of April.

0:00:020:00:05

We had rain, hail, sleet and snow and temperatures well below average,

0:00:050:00:09

but we closed out the month

0:00:090:00:11

with something a little more traditional -

0:00:110:00:13

sunshine and sharp showers.

0:00:130:00:15

Now these Weather Watchers' pictures illustrate the stories beautifully.

0:00:150:00:19

The showers gathered in strength and momentum into the afternoon,

0:00:190:00:22

some with hail, even some rumbles of thunder.

0:00:220:00:26

For Sunday, the first day of May,

0:00:260:00:28

we keep this west to east divide

0:00:280:00:30

and the first week of May

0:00:300:00:31

looks pretty interesting. Keep listening.

0:00:310:00:33

The best of the drier, sunnier weather

0:00:330:00:35

likely across East Anglia and the south-east corner.

0:00:350:00:38

Clouding over a touch through the Midlands.

0:00:380:00:40

A band of more persistent rain

0:00:400:00:42

staying out into the west.

0:00:420:00:44

By the middle of the afternoon,

0:00:440:00:45

it's going to be wet and rather breezy

0:00:450:00:47

through Northern Ireland, Western Scotland,

0:00:470:00:50

perhaps sheltered eastern areas, east of the Pennines,

0:00:500:00:52

just seeing the odd spot or two

0:00:520:00:54

of light rain here, but north-west, well,

0:00:540:00:57

the rain persistent all afternoon.

0:00:570:00:59

The same for Wales.

0:00:590:01:00

South-west England, some poor visibility,

0:01:000:01:02

some low cloud

0:01:020:01:03

and some light, patchy rain as well.

0:01:030:01:05

Into the Midlands, East Anglia,

0:01:050:01:07

the south-east corner should stay dry and sunny

0:01:070:01:09

and, here, pleasant as well in the sunshine.

0:01:090:01:11

We should see highs of 15 or 16 degrees.

0:01:110:01:14

A milder feel generally continuing across the country,

0:01:140:01:17

with highs of around 10-16 Celsius.

0:01:170:01:21

Now, as we move out of Sunday

0:01:210:01:23

into Monday, Bank Holiday Monday,

0:01:230:01:25

there's a chance for more persistent rain.

0:01:250:01:27

Light and patchy through the night,

0:01:270:01:29

but heavier rain,

0:01:290:01:30

stronger winds start to gather.

0:01:300:01:32

Yes, coming from a westerly direction,

0:01:320:01:34

so still milder, but there will be

0:01:340:01:36

a spell of wet weather from west to east.

0:01:360:01:38

As it clears the south-east corner,

0:01:380:01:40

it leaves behind a trail of showers

0:01:400:01:43

and highs generally

0:01:430:01:44

of 10-15 degrees once more.

0:01:440:01:46

But we start to see that weather front

0:01:460:01:48

moving out of the way.

0:01:480:01:49

A brief frontal system up into the far north-west

0:01:490:01:52

continues to run the risk of some sharper showers

0:01:520:01:55

and some stronger winds here,

0:01:550:01:57

but generally speaking, Tuesday, a good deal

0:01:570:01:59

of dry, usable weather in the offing.

0:01:590:02:01

Again, the best of the sunshine and warmth

0:02:010:02:03

in the south-east corner.

0:02:030:02:04

We will start to see a ridge of high pressure

0:02:040:02:07

building from the south-west.

0:02:070:02:08

Now, the winds rotate in a clockwise direction,

0:02:080:02:11

so that means a southerly flow

0:02:110:02:13

will start to dominate the weather story.

0:02:130:02:16

That's going to drag in something

0:02:160:02:17

a little milder towards the end of the week.

0:02:170:02:20

It's also going to be responsible for helping

0:02:200:02:22

deflect the weather fronts

0:02:220:02:24

up into the far north and west.

0:02:240:02:25

The high pressure really trying

0:02:250:02:27

to keep its grip across the UK.

0:02:270:02:29

Weather fronts pushing into the north-west,

0:02:290:02:31

so it means really most of the rain

0:02:310:02:33

just across north-west Scotland, Northern Ireland.

0:02:330:02:35

Central and southern parts of England and Wales

0:02:350:02:38

should be largely fine and dry.

0:02:380:02:40

More importantly, getting that little bit warmer.

0:02:400:02:43

Temperatures into the high teens likely.

0:02:430:02:45

Now, the warmer air will continue to dominate the weather story,

0:02:450:02:49

particularly as we move towards Friday and into the weekend.

0:02:490:02:52

We could see 20 degrees.

0:02:520:02:54

Again a good deal of dry weather.

0:02:540:02:55

Perhaps just cloudy into the far north.

0:02:550:02:58

But how long will it last?

0:02:580:03:00

Well, indications are that this warmth,

0:03:000:03:02

these russet tones, will stay with us into next weekend

0:03:020:03:05

and there is a possibility that we could see temperatures

0:03:050:03:08

perhaps into the low 20s, because the jet stream is

0:03:080:03:11

sitting in this kind of horseshoe direction at the moment,

0:03:110:03:15

and the warm side of the jet

0:03:150:03:17

driving those weather fronts to the north and west of us,

0:03:170:03:20

and also being responsible for

0:03:200:03:21

this southerly air, so yes, warmer.

0:03:210:03:23

The chance of some thundery showers,

0:03:230:03:25

but also some sunshine.

0:03:250:03:27

Enjoy! I'll be back tomorrow.
