18/05/2016 Weather for the Week Ahead

Hello. Let's check on this unsettled weather

heading our way this week.

No changes from yesterday's weather forecast.

We'll throw in some jet streams and low pressures.

Every day will be a little different,

and it looks like it'll stay unsettled into the weekend.

Even as I speak,

these weather fronts

are sweeping in off the Atlantic.

I showed you a similar picture yesterday.

There's more to come.

One across North America here.

That'll be racing our way for Saturday.

In the short term, we've got rain

across western parts of the UK.

We start like this on Wednesday -

on a mild note.

Quite a bit of heavy rain around

in these western counties,

from Cornwall up to Scotland.

Through the day, we'll develop

heavy showers across parts of England.

The west might brighten up

later in the afternoon,

but it's across England

where we'll see most of the downpours.

Very hit and miss weather on Wednesday.

indicating potential downpours.

Dry weather in-between too.

Not so bad at this stage,

four o'clock,

across parts of Wales...

Northern Ireland not bad.

You'll notice Dumfries and Galloway,

and parts of the Western Isles,

also getting some sunshine,

but eastern Scotland

catching some showers.

Very bitty, the weather,

during the course of Wednesday.

Here's a look at Thursday.

One weather front moves out of the way.

There's another, another and another out there

in the Atlantic.

Thursday starts off dry

across most of the country.

This is where the rain will be

around lunchtime.

Across Northern Ireland, Western Scotland...

Through the afternoon,

more of us will get the rain,

but I think the heaviest of the rain

will fall across north-western areas,

and actually the south-east,

and many of these eastern counties,

will stay dry

through most of the afternoon.

It'll be quite warm.

20 degrees in London. That's not bad.

Friday.

Low pressure to the north of the UK

once again.

We've got a few isobars here.

So a brisk wind off the Atlantic.

It's south-westerly.

It's coming from a mild source,

down into the southern climbs,

so it's not going to be cold at all.

19 degrees in London.

This is the weekend.

Not pretty.

Looks like an autumn low.

It's likely to bring strong winds.

How strong, we don't know.

Western and north-western coasts

likely to get the strongest winds.

Heavy rain in places too.

In the south-east, it could be quite warm.

Hazy sunshine there. 18 degrees.

Most of us should get at least some rain.

Then that low will pull out

into the northern portion of the North Sea.

So, this weekend

doesn't look like constant rain

but we have to be prepared

for at least a dose of heavy rain

and some strong gusty winds.

Yesterday we were talking about a high pressure close to the UK

and a low pressure to the north-west.

That's still the case.

With the jet stream dipping like so,

we'll see that unsettled weather

continue to affect north-western areas,

but this time it looks like this is the preferred scenario.

So the high pressure with the fine weather

will stay out across the continent

but, with these south-westerly winds coming in,

we are actually going to be importing warmish weather.

The long-term outlook, looking to the end of the month,

that's when we anticipate there's a chance that

the weather will slowly, slowly settle down.

So, for next week, further low pressures,

with the most unsettled weather

in the north-west of the UK,

but at least it's staying fairly warm.
