Hello. Coming into work yesterday, | 0:00:03 | 0:00:05
I heard somebody use the phrase "flaming June". | 0:00:05 | 0:00:07
But perhaps not quite in the context that it's intended. | 0:00:07 | 0:00:11
Looking back at some of the Weather Watchers' photographs through today, | 0:00:11 | 0:00:15
you can really understand why it's been wet at times. | 0:00:15 | 0:00:18
Stormy often, with some dramatic thunderstorms. | 0:00:18 | 0:00:21
Even some funnel clouds being sent in | 0:00:21 | 0:00:23
on our Weather Watchers' pictures. | 0:00:23 | 0:00:25
The intensity of those storms... | 0:00:25 | 0:00:26
Well, they've caused some localised flooding. | 0:00:26 | 0:00:28
But by complete contrast, | 0:00:28 | 0:00:30
the Northern Isles have seen some beautiful weather this week. | 0:00:30 | 0:00:33
Orkney and Shetland, plenty of blue sky and sunshine. | 0:00:33 | 0:00:35
Why? | 0:00:35 | 0:00:37 | |
Well, an area of low pressure has been sitting across the country. | 0:00:37 | 0:00:40
It's been driving this pause-rewind-repeat story | 0:00:40 | 0:00:43
of plenty of showers for many of us. | 0:00:43 | 0:00:46
It does look as though, as we head towards the weekend, though, | 0:00:46 | 0:00:49
we will start to see a change. | 0:00:49 | 0:00:51
For Thursday, though, it's back to same old same old. | 0:00:51 | 0:00:54
Starting off quiet. | 0:00:54 | 0:00:55
Through England and Wales, | 0:00:55 | 0:00:56
we'll see some showers developing through the course of the day. | 0:00:56 | 0:00:59
Some of them heavy, possibly slow-moving and thundery again. | 0:00:59 | 0:01:02
To the far north of Scotland, | 0:01:02 | 0:01:03
we'll have some outbreaks of light, patchy rain. | 0:01:03 | 0:01:06
But still a cooler feel here generally - 11 to 15 degrees. | 0:01:06 | 0:01:10
Further south, in the sunshine, if you dodged the showers, | 0:01:10 | 0:01:13
highest values of 20 Celsius. | 0:01:13 | 0:01:15
Now, most of the showers will start to ease | 0:01:15 | 0:01:17
through Thursday night, into Friday, | 0:01:17 | 0:01:20
and drift that little bit further south. | 0:01:20 | 0:01:22
It's going to be a relatively mild night, nine to 14 degrees. | 0:01:22 | 0:01:26
But the area of low pressure is starting to push its way southwards. | 0:01:26 | 0:01:29
So on Friday, it looks as though most of the showers | 0:01:29 | 0:01:32
will be confined south of the M4 corridor. | 0:01:32 | 0:01:34
We'll also, at the same time, pick up more cloud and outbreaks of rain | 0:01:34 | 0:01:38
across eastern Scotland and north-east England. | 0:01:38 | 0:01:41
Here, it stays cool and disappointing. | 0:01:41 | 0:01:43
Further south, highest values again | 0:01:43 | 0:01:45
of around 18, 19, possibly 20 degrees. | 0:01:45 | 0:01:49
By the weekend, though, we're likely to see a change. | 0:01:49 | 0:01:51
This ridge of high pressure starts to build from the south-west. | 0:01:51 | 0:01:55
It's a fleeting glimpse of something a little quieter, | 0:01:55 | 0:01:58
but at least it arrives for the weekend. | 0:01:58 | 0:02:00
And hopefully, we should see a good deal of dry weather. | 0:02:00 | 0:02:03
Fingers crossed, even a little bit of sunshine from time to time. | 0:02:03 | 0:02:07
So if we start Saturday, then, | 0:02:07 | 0:02:08
there will be some drier, brighter weather coming through. | 0:02:08 | 0:02:11
And it does look as though most of us | 0:02:11 | 0:02:13
should see some sunshine from time to time. | 0:02:13 | 0:02:15
12 to 18 degrees, the overall high. | 0:02:15 | 0:02:18
By the time we get into Sunday, | 0:02:18 | 0:02:20
there is an outside chance of a weak weather front | 0:02:20 | 0:02:22
producing a few showers out to the west, nothing significant. | 0:02:22 | 0:02:25
The best of the sunshine likely to be the further east you are. | 0:02:25 | 0:02:28
And again, highs of 15 to 19 degrees. | 0:02:28 | 0:02:32
But that area of high pressure is squeezed out of the way | 0:02:32 | 0:02:35
and another area of low moves in, bringing wet and windy weather. | 0:02:35 | 0:02:38
The isobars squeezing together | 0:02:38 | 0:02:40
and that'll be more of a significant feature for the start of next week. | 0:02:40 | 0:02:44
It's going to take its time in arriving, | 0:02:44 | 0:02:47
probably not getting into much of the eastern half of the UK | 0:02:47 | 0:02:50
until the end of the day on Monday. | 0:02:50 | 0:02:52
But it will bring outbreaks of rain, strong winds, | 0:02:52 | 0:02:54
albeit from a southerly direction. | 0:02:54 | 0:02:56
So a milder feel, with highs of 21 degrees, | 0:02:56 | 0:02:59
if you keep the sun. | 0:02:59 | 0:03:01
And then into next week, to the longer six to ten-day period. | 0:03:01 | 0:03:04
We start to see this battleground, | 0:03:04 | 0:03:06
with the high pressure down to the south-west | 0:03:06 | 0:03:08
and low pressure up into the north-west, | 0:03:08 | 0:03:10
where the isobars remain a feature. | 0:03:10 | 0:03:12
And this is going to be the level of uncertainty... | 0:03:12 | 0:03:15
Just how much wet weather | 0:03:15 | 0:03:17
we're likely to see and where it's going to be. | 0:03:17 | 0:03:20
At the moment, it looks likely | 0:03:20 | 0:03:21
that the north-west stays pretty unsettled. | 0:03:21 | 0:03:23
Fingers crossed, some of us in the south | 0:03:23 | 0:03:26
will see some drier, sunnier moments. | 0:03:26 | 0:03:28
I'll firm up on it tomorrow. | 0:03:28 | 0:03:30
Who did you say you were? | 0:03:32 | 0:03:32
I'm the police. | 0:03:32 | 0:03:33
The police were there? | 0:03:33 | 0:03:35 |
